Samurai facial armor (sōmen), mislabelled “executioner’s mask,” iron, 18th–19thcentury (?), London, Science Museum Group Collection, obj. no. A129822, The Board of Trustees of the Science Museum.
Two ‘executioner’s masks’ housed in the collection of the pharmaceutical entrepreneur and philanthropist Henry Solomon Wellcome (1853–1936) have recently been exposed as historiographical forgeries manufactured in the nineteenth-century.
Previously these objects were believed to have covered the face of the executioner during capital punishment, either to disguise his identity or to protect him from the ‘evil eye’ of the dead convict. In an article for History Today, Alison Kinney argued that such notions do not match with early modern written and visual documentation but rather with Victorian ‘gothic’ sensibilities.

Hey, a friend of ours gave us a bobblehead of her! Karen is the first doll / toy we have of a person we know and currently socialize with on the regular. She will get a place of honor somewhere near Edgar Allan Poe and Count Chocula, I suspect. (unless she would rather hang out with Mothman and Bigfoot )
Grilled out with her, @maximillian_deersteak , Leslie and the Inlaws for a nice day of tasty corn on the cob, veggie burgers (the rest got ribs), cornbread, baked potatoes, and baked beans! The local farms don’t have 5hat quality corn just yet, so I suspect it was brought from the Carolinas. We don’t usually get good corn here until around July 4 via Swann Farms.
They all went on a walk by the bay, but my back is tricking up, so I remaing back here with Larry to post this and talk about trains, ships and history.
