Looking at my journals from my late teens and throughout my 20s, I dissociated quite a lot. I have notes to myself about waking up, realizing I was doing something, like going up the steps to Mr Vice’s class or talking to R&K about a science fiction author on I had never heard of, and then recognized after I “woke up”.

It was pretty scary then, and still is a bit frightening now. I wrote that it feels like something else was driving my mind and body on autopilot, and I just would snap into consciousness at random, realizing that I was in a fog mentally, but the body just went on about the business of hanging out with pals at D&D or driving home from school, only to snap back into sharp focus later on.

There was a real disconnect from my body, and reality in general. I wonder how many people had the same vibe and even gave it a second thought?

I don’t have any alternative personalities or lost time that I know of, more of just coasting. A lot more than just “highway hypnosis ” or getting lost in a book though.

Like I mentioned, no alternate identities, but depersonalization and serialization certainly seem to have made an appearance.

The new year of 2000 was the dawn of a new century, a new millennium, and one of the feelings was… relief. An oversight in the way some computers managed dates called Y2K had caused many to think society was going to collapse over a minor date problem. Why were people so receptive to this idea? Who were the most susceptible? And what does this have to do with the American Far Right?

Liked on YouTube: Harry Nilsson’s THE POINT (1971) – Alan Thicke Narration – Third Telecast Restoration

In the mid 80’s, my parents recorded the third telecast of Harry Nilsson’s ‘The Point’ from TV on VHS. To this day, it is the ONLY recording I’ve ever found of this supposed lost version of the film.

The Point first aired February 2, 1971, and was the first animated special ever to air in prime time on US television. It appeared on the ABC television network as an ABC Movie of the Week. The film was directed by Fred Wolf and produced by Murakami-Wolf Films in association with Nilsson House Music, adapted from Harry Nilsson’s album of the same name.

In the animated special, there is a framing device of a father telling his son the fable as a bedtime story. In it’s initial airing, the voice of the father was provided by a friend of Nilsson’s, Dustin Hoffman, who agreed to take $20,000 for his narration to be used on one broadcast, so for later airings of the film, the narration had to be re-recorded.

On it’s second telecast, the narration was provided by Alan Barzman (this version is still currently lost) and on it’s third telecast (this version) the narration was provided by Alan Thicke, best known for playing Dr. Jason Seaver on the 1980’s sitcom “Growing Pains”.

So here it is – my gift to you, completely restored picture and audio, spliced together by me from my recorded VHS copy and the original DVD release of the film (a MUCH better looking copy than the recently released bluray). This version, once considered lost, is now found.

Enjoy!
