fairy folk quest

1: Quest of the Ancients Part I
Chosin and Limandi slept comfortably in the chambers provided by King Britochani of the Netochans. The sweet gurgling of the seven sacred pools brought them dreams of old homes and lands of long ago. Limandi dreamt of the great dance. Images of whirling Nenyani filled her mind as she remembered the great celebration of ascendancy.

The memory woke her up with a gasp. She sat in a cold night sweat as she wondered for the first time if there were others of their race on the small island. Did they sleep still? Were they awake and lost? She was about to awaken Chosin, when a new voice whispered in the darkness.

It was their new friend, Lentocha who had come to awaken them. The King was summoning them. Chosin awoke, and the three began to move through the blue night air.

What is the King’s name?

Chosin tried to get his bearings. He remembered how Lentocha had brought them to the seven pools and then to fallen log nearby. Behind the fallen log, they had climbed into a deep hole which hid the entrance to the King’s throne room. Now underground, the party moved along the gulley of the deep holes but away from the Sacred Pools … in the opposite direction. They surfaced at another fallen log … this one lying on the ground instead of across a gulley.

They were on a small knoll which overlooked some kind of old carved stone ruins. In the night, the bluish Nenyani and the more green Netochans could easily see each other, but they were invisible to the eyes of man. The King expanded his great lavender wings and then he began to speak.

Fairy Folk Quest
This quest serves as an introduction to the four part Quest of the Ancients. It may serve you to review this one before beginning the Ancients quest.

The King sat on the fallen log, with Chosin and Limandi at this feet. Scores of the Netochans sat on the ground around the log, curious for their first meeting with the two strangers. One of the Netochans, a young female, flitted from side to side of the King, and finally sat at his right side as the King began his speech.

Chosin and Limandi found it difficult to concentrate at first. They had never seen fairy folk with wings such as the King had. Was that a cloak? Or were those natural wings? At last they concentrated on the king’s address.

“My friends, today we welcome visitors to our midst. Here are Chosin and Limandi, two of our cousins from far lands. They have recently passed through an ascendancy which has brought them to us.”

At the word “ascendancy” the crowd gasped. The process of land sinking, sliding, and then reemerging was deep in their nature, but not in their experience. The island of Caldera was very stable. None alive had passed through ascendancy. They were full of questions … what was it like to hibernate underwater? to awaken to a new world? The crowd drew closer to the visitors, hoping for their chance to find answers to old mysteries.

“I know you have many questions,” the King continued, “but we must first give our visitors time to adjust to us and learn of us. Let us first answer their questions, and in time they will answer ours.”

The wise king knew that to live in his world, the newcomers would have to learn more of the man creatures. So he set a high priority on the teaching of man language to Chosin and Limandi. The two Nenyani had seen the strange symbols of man language, but they had no idea how to interpret those symbols. Their own language was based on more concrete pictures which they could share in the minds of others. The language of the Netochans was also picture-based, but they had learned to interpret the language of man, and this knowledge they would share with the newcomers.

What was the name of the Netochan who originally brought Chosin and Limandi to meet the king?

2: Quest of the Ancients Part I
It was decided that Lentocha would be in charge of the language training for the two Nenyani. With this decree made, the King vanished to attend to other business. The crowd of Netochans gathered closer around Chosin and Limandi … eager to hear of their experiences during ascendancy. But one small Netochan stayed back. She fluttered around the log where her father had sat before. Tlingomar, the King’s daughter was not entirely pleased at all the attention given to the newcomers.

Seeing that Chosin and Limandi were overwhelmed, Lentocha insisted that he take his pupils to a better place of study. He took them to a hill overlooking Tiki Cove Plaza. They were under a big tree overlooking the back entrance to the stage.

3: Quest of the Ancients Part I
Learning the man language was no easy task — neither was teaching it! The Nenyani did have the gift of speech, but they rarely used it. They were much more proficient in sharing mental pictures with one or more others with whom they wished to converse. To learn the man language, speech was necessary.

Lentocha began by showing the newcomers man words found in Tiki Cove Plaza. He collected words together that began with the same sound. For example, in Tiki Plaza he could find the words: shoes, shirt, stripe, sandals, shorts, spa, and stage. He first showed the words to Chosin and Limandi and then associated each one with a mental picture that showed the meaning of the word. After the two could match the word and its meaning, Lentocha then showed them how to pronounce the word. In so doing, he helped them associate the letter S with the sound S makes and with a number of man-words which begin with this sound.

After a time, the newcomers learned the sounds indicated by most letters and also increased their vocabulary of words. They could sound out most words for an approximate pronunciation, and they understood many words as well.

What two words found in Tiki Cove Plaza begin with the L sound? ( 2 words separated only by a space)

leopard leisure

While studying in the Plaza, from time to time, Chosin and Limandi needed to use their stones of invisiblity. The Plaza was often empty, but they still had no desire to encounter the men face to face. Lentocha also had such a stone that he used when necessary.

After many lessons, Lentocha sent the couple to the nearby village of Tabu. There it was often night, and the two could practice their language skills with no danger of discovery. They studied often in a place called McCobb’s.

In Tabu, the lessons went smoothly as there was no need for invisiblity. Lentocha gave Chosin and Limandi many tasks to deepen their understanding of the man language. For example, they learned the new words Fizzy and Fizz. Luckily for them there was one word they had learned in their previous station with the Z sound. What was that word?

4: Quest of the Ancients Part I
Occasionally while they were studying, some of the curious Netochans would find them. After approaching cautiously, they asked the questions so on their mind. What was it like to go through ascendancy?

Chosin and Limindi explained as well as they could. Rumblings in the earth warned that their land was about to sink. When that happened, the mature Nenyani gathered all the young into their earthen homes. The entry was sealed and all the family fell asleep. Another set of rumblings awakened them one by one. Upon awakening, the first instinct was to seek the sun. Once above ground again, it was always a shock to see how the land had changed. Usually, the Nenyani were not awakened until life had begun to spring forth on the land once again. That was nature’s plan for survival. But other things were different. The climate, the vegetation, and, most importantly, the neighboring land may have changed. Adjustments had to be made. The Nenyani were by necessity very flexible creatures. The population changed as well. Some would not survive the ascendancy. Others would be greatly changed by hibernation.

All these things fascinated the Netochans who wondered if such an event would someday happen to them. They clustered around Chosin and Limandi .. fascinated and in awe of their experience. One small Nentochan girl brought a wreath of silver orchids for Limandi’s hair.

Tlingomar was accustomed to being the center of attention. She did not like this change of popularity. Silently she sat until she thought of a plan.

The next task given to the Nenyani was a particularly difficult one. Search as they might, they were having trouble finding the solution in the words scattered about Tabu. Tlingomar came to them with a smile and a hint.

“Lentocha is tricking you this time,” she smiled. The answer is here, but not in the village. Do you see the tall mountain to the left of the Rune Room? Your answer is at the top of that hill.”

The two set off at once for the solution to their exercise.

5: Quest of the Ancients Part I
Tlingomar had only hoped that Chosin and Limandi would get lost on the tall mountain. But things worked out even better than she expected. Tabu and the tall mountain were covered in mist. But just as Chosin and Limandi reached the summit, the mist cleared and they stood exposed in the sunlight.

This would not have been a problem, except there was a man at the summit as well. The two small Nenyani stood frozen in terror. And their fears were realized. The man spotted them almost at once.

It was Greenhill! This was the very same man they had encountered on their island. The very man who piloted the boat they hid in when they crossed to these new lands. This was the man who gave talks about the Sasyana, the great ancient creature of the forest. This was the man whose maps they had stolen!

The two small ones were almost happy to see him again. This man held the key to a great mystery of their people … the location of the Sasyana. But the happiness faded when they realized they were trapped!

What is the natural signal to the Nenyani that their island may soon sink? (one word) rumbling

5: Quest of the Ancients Part I
Greenhill wasted no time. After all, he had spent a lifetime chasing creatures of legend. These creatures were definitely not men! They would be the proof he sought of other life forms sharing the island. His lasso quickly tied the two small ones together, and he secured them with the rope into the passenger side of his buggy.

Wow, what luck! He had been in the high country looking for signs of the giant hairy ape man, but two live specimen were an even better prize. He hurried with his treasure to his home where he could examine them with care. Luckily his home was not very far away. The buggy literally dropped down the side of the hill and bounced across Tabu Chasm. The flowers from Limandi’s hair began to blow away in the night air. At last they reached the Nene Vista area in North Tiki. Greenhill was lucky again that his neighbor Mercedes was not home. He drove up the hill behind her house to his own place. He then hurried inside with his double bundle, eager to find out more about these creatures.

Limandi was frozen in fear … stiff and silent. Chosin’s mind was racing. They knew little of these men, but their friends, the Netocha lived among but apart from the men. They learned of them, but stayed separate from them it seemed. Chosin’s instinct was to escape, and as quickly as possible. But how? The ropes held them very securely.

Greenhill had a sort of cage in his back room, and there he deposited the two small ones. Free from the ropes, Limandi began to send Chosin mental pictures of their stone of invisibility. It was a suggestion … should they disappear? Chosin made a slight shake of his head to indicate no. Perhaps there would be a better time.

Limandi was reviewing how they had come to be in such danger. She began to wonder if the King’s daughter had not set them up for danger on purpose.

What is the name of the King’s daughter? tlingomar

6: Quest of the Ancients Part I
From outside the cage, Greenhill examined his two captives carefully. He tried talking to them in a soft voice, but unfortunately the two Nenyani did not recognize most of the man words he used. They sat silently as Greenhill examined their pointed ears and diamond-shaped eyes. He even tried to match the shade of their skin with some fabric samples he had around his house.

After a time, Greenhill began to run out of methods of study. His mind began to wander through his options. Should he put them on exhibition? Should he take them to a scientific laboratory? Each option he considered created a mental picture that transferred to Chosin and Limandi. They did not like these options.

Suddenly Chosin had an idea. He decided to speak. Slowly and carefully he spoke the word “Greenhill.” The captor was stunned. Had he heard correctly? Did these creatures know his name? He looked at them in awe, and Chosin repeated the word … “Greenhill.”

Greenhill now began a pointless string of language aimed at the two. They had no chance of following his rapid speech. They had Greenhill’s attention, but now what? How could they keep themselves from exhibition? Carefully, Chosin pulled the four map sheets out of the folds of his cloak. He handed them to Greenhill.

Once again the man was stunned! He looked at the map and at his captives. Were these two reponsible for his lost maps?? Chosin and Limandi each nodded slowly, indicating that they were returning the man’s property. Their faces reflected sorrow of wrong doing.

Greenhill dropped the maps and ran to his shelf for a book entitled “Legendary Creatures of the Forest.” He came back to the cage with a picture of the tall, hairy ape man which he showed the couple. Limandi spoke it first … “Sasyana,” she uttered. And Chosin echoed the word.

“Sasyana,” repeated Greenhill. These two might be able to help him find the old man of the mountains. He planned to take the two to one of his most promising spots for hunting the ancient one, but not before he had a good night’s rest. He double checked the cage, then settled down to sleep.

In the meantime, Lentocha and King Britochani were urgently searching for the two missing newcomers. They discussed their strategy as they bent over the silver orchids they found. These were obviously from Limandi’s hair. Lentocha found them in a hole behind the Ouija hut in the mists of Tabu.

7: Quest of the Ancients Part I
Lentocha and King Britochani followed the trail of silver orchids until they could receive the fearful mental pictures produced by Chosin and Limandi. They slipped carefully into his house and found the back room with the locked cage. But it appeared to be empty. Then Chosin and Limandi removed their stones of invisibility to reveal themselves to their friends.

Silently they worked, but diligently. Even so, they could not open the cage. How could they escape?

King Britochani began to ask mental questions. What was this man Greenhill like? What did he want of the two Nenyani? Chosin and Limandi told him what they could. The King was especially interested in the man’s hunt for the tall hairy creature of the forests. The King had a plan which he explained to his two captive friends.

Early the next morning, Greenhill returned to the cave to find the two small ones sitting in meditation. He broke their concentration and once again showed them the picture of the great ape man.

What was the name of the reference book Greenhill used on the previous day? legendary creatures of the forest

7: Quest of the Ancients Part I
“Sasyana,” Limandi spoke. She then looked into his eyes and spoke a new word … “map.”

Greenhill brought a map of Caldera to the cage, and the two small ones examined it closely. Finally they pointed to a place near the foot of the great Volcano. It appeared on the map to be a small, round, grassy spiral.

They pointed to the spot and repeated, “Sasyana.”
Greenhill tied them with rope again, put them in his buggy, and set off for this mysterious spot.

8: Quest of the Ancients Part I
Greenhill stopped his truck by a blazing campfire. He sat on the bench and deposited the two Nenyani, still held captive by the ropes, on the ground beside him. The spot was new to him. Yes it was misty forest, but not high altitude. It had been his opinion that the ancient creature prefered tall places.

“Sasyana” he spoke to the two on the ground. Their skin appeared almost aqua in the blaze of the campfire.
They nodded in agreement, “Sasyana.”

Greenhill looked around, but saw no traces of the ape man.
“Sasyana, here!” Chosin insisted.

Greenhill saw no other option. He decided to loosen the bonds and let the two show him what they knew of Sasyana signs in this area. After all, they had short legs, he would have no trouble catching them again if necessary.

What kind of flowers had Limandi been wearing in her hair? (2 words) silver orchids

Greenhill loosened the ropes while Chosin and Limandi gave him friendly smiles. They stood up, stretched their legs and pointed North.

Off they went in a northerly direction. But just beyond the perimeter of the campfire, the mist closed in around them. Chosin and Lemandi became invisible to Greenhill in the mist. They ran northward until they heard the soft call of a night dove. They followed this signal to King Britochani and Lentocha. King Britochani swept them up in his powerful moss-green arms and spread his wings to take them to safety. They stopped at a deserted man village due west of the campfire in the Grotto of Mist. They huddled near the center stone in this village to catch their breath and assess their situation.

9: Quest of the Ancients Part I
King Britochani hugged the newcomers tightly under his wings. After they all felt safer, he had to ask how they had come to be lost in the first place. Why had they left the side of Lentocha?

Chosin and Limandi explained that they had been directed up the tall mountain by Tlingomar.

What is the name of the man who captured Chosin and Limandi?

The king summoned his daughter to him to explain the reason she put the newcomers in danger. Alas, Tlingomar did not herself know the reason for her actions. She did not understand her own jealousy.

But the King assessed the situation and made appropriate decisions. Chosin and Limandi would need to move to a safer haven … far from Greenhill for a time. Tlingomar would accompany them to assist them as she was able, and to learn to get along with the newcomers.

It was Lentocha who was assigned to accompany the three travelers to their point of departure. He escorted them to a shipwreck on a stretch of beach just south of the Kantana road. Here they waited safely in the mists, warmed by the fire, to prepare for the next leg of their journey.

10: Quest of the Ancients Part I
As they waited by the fire, Lentocha explained to Tlingomar about more language lessons that she should teach to the newcomers. At first the little princess was sullen and quiet, but eventually she was drawn into the conversation. After all, the Nenyani and Netochans had much to learn from each other.

Chosin was curious about the King’s wings. Did only the king have wings? Was he born with them? Did all the Netochans eventually have wings? He and Limandi had never seen any of their own kind with wings.

What color were the King’s wings? lavender

10: Quest of the Ancients Part I
Tlingomar interrupted a reply to those questions with some of her own. How many times had Chosin and Limandi undergone ascendancy?

“Six times,’ replied Chosin, but then he had a question of his own. “Do you people really know the whereabouts of the Sasyana?” In the deepest part of their hearts, Chosin and Limandi yearned to meet the ancient one for themselves and learn of his wisdom. To them this was more important than the fear of Greenhill, finding wings, and perhaps even their own survival.

The conversation was cut short by the arrival of the night boat to Ootay. Lentocha bade his farewells, and the other three embarked on a voyage that led them through the channel between Ootay and Nada islands. They disembarked close to Enoki Hollow. It was there they made a camp at the foot of a very large mushroom.

The spot turned out to be a good hiding place. There was mist much of time, rendering the small ones invisible to men. And the man village of Maidenflight was nearby. On dark nights, Tlingomar could lead Chosin and Limandi there to study the language of man.

Where did they first study languages? (3 words) tiki cove plaza

11: Quest of the Ancients Pt I
Tlingomar and the Nenyani began to establish trust for each other. And the little fairy princess was .. almost .. always truthful with her charges. When asked if she had ever seen the Sasyana, Tlingomar answered yes. And that was almost true. She had seen the mental images of others from her tribe who had encounters with the giant beast. And when asked about wings … well, Tlingomar was not entirely truthful. She told Chosin and Limandi that wings were reserved for the royal family only, and were acquired through a process known only to royalty. They believed her for now, and they lived together peacefully for a time. What happened next is next week’s story.
