7457 – Friday! Hoo-ray!

Didn’t make it for Moroccan food (no belly dancers until Saturday), so we did Thai/sushi instead, and then went to the club. The iced chai teas with soy milk was the highlight, I think. I got a plate of pad thai with tofu that probably could’ve fed a family of 12.

Dan and I first wanted to go to the Mai-Kai, but it doesn’t open until 5pm on weekdays. The club was nice… we stuck around until about 7:30. Belle was there, for the first time in an age, but apparently she never got my CDs. I’ll have to burn her some new ones when I do vimoh‘s cartoons this weekend.

All of the reviews of the Batman Begins movie have been overwhelmingly positive… glad to heat it! Maybe I’ll check it out before MP comes into town.

An awesome collection of old school ad art and retro illustration. – I’m really digging this one, in particular.

It was demoniacally hot yesterday at midday…. late afternoon rains were a welcome cooling factor, after the first half hour of jungle steam. I feel the change in atmosphere in my body.. sinus pressure is different, and the air is a lot thicker than it was, just a week ago. Sometimes I suspect I could fold an origami butterfly out of a cigarette paper, hang it in the air and the humidity would just let it hover in suspension like a slice of carrot in Gramma’s beef stew.

Weekend came just in time… I’ve been feeling fatigued this week. If I had a lesser work ethic, I’d have bailed on today.

Moment of Lyric:

Ever close your eyes
ever stop and listen
ever feel alive
and you’ve nothing missing
you don’t need a reason
let the day go on and on

Let the rain fall down
everywhere around you
give into it now
let the day surround you
you don’t need a reason
let the rain go on and on

Number of books I own:  I couldn’t even venture a safe estimate. About 6 gigs of text-file/pdf/palm-readable stuff, Actual book-books, I have about 12 full bookshelves worth out, and tightly packed closet full of boxes.

Presently reading: Cycling through three – Audio book – Going Postal – Terry Pratchett, palm book – The War in the Air, H.G. Wells , paper book – Complete Prose Works – Walt Whitman

In the pipeline: More Pratchett, A rereading of Twain, Whatever else tickles my fancy or rollls down the torrent-pipe.

Recently Read: Night Watch – Pratchett, Assorted Philip Marlow books – Raymond Chandler

Two of my favourites: Dandilion Wine – Bradbury and  The Lorax, Dr. Seuss

I tag anyone who wants a good healthy tagging!

7455 – Sleepyhead this morn.

fooling with customizing my journal in the S2 style, just so I can support tags. (Example – all entries that I’ve tagged that have an mp3 link. I’ve only gone back through June so far.) Still some scaffolding up. We’ll see if I keep it or not.

There seem to be some glitches.. it keeps reverting back to default colors sometimes, and the font does the same. Maybe it’s time to step away from my Halloween type colors and go with something more Parchment-y.

The tag feature may or may not be useful to me… most of my entries are all over the place, topic-wise.

I think I’m going out for Moroccan food with Danny tonight. Mmmm, couscous!

Not a lot to say about my life, dear journal. Have a pile of links, instead.

The finest radio drama of the 1930’s was The Mercury Theatre on the Air, a show featuring the acclaimed New York drama company founded by Orson Welles and John Houseman. In its brief run, it featured an impressive array of talents, including Agnes Moorehead, Bernard Herrmann, and George Coulouris. The show is famous for its notorious War of the Worlds broadcast, but the other shows in the series are relatively unknown. This site has many of the surviving shows, and will eventually have all of them.

Compressor on the fridge crapped out, and I can’t seem to get in contact with the landlord. Not sure what action I’ll take if that situation continues. It’s been coming a while now.. the freezer has been fritzy since the hurricane evacuation and power outage.

I’m not really in much of a mood to write. Not in my journal or the community project. I’ll keep typing for a bit, and see if I move past it.

Watched a bunch of JLU episodes that I’ve been grabbing off of torrent, but never got around to viewing. I dig The Question more than I thought I might. Combs has a great voice for him, and he drives a mean Pontiac, too. The Huntress is a good tie for him.

I like how they kept Billy Batson looking CC Beckish, too.

Second season has this whole Cadmus / Amanda Waller thing going… interesting to see a continued storyline after first season’s collection of one-shots.

Interesting. It looks like I’m a few episodes ahead of the air time, unless they’re cycling reruns on cartoon network. I’ve got up to episode 11, and the last one they’ve aired is #8.

Spoilers, highlight if you must see ’em.

The End of Episode 11 where Brainiac is hidden inside of Luthor’s body was a nice nod to Alan Moore’s “Last Superman Story”. Is that the season Finale? Prof. Hamilton still is a surprise… and I’m glad to see that the Red Tornado isn’t totally destroyed in *every* major fight scene he’s in. I got a little squeamish seeing Superman crush a Mother Box. Aren’t those things sentient.. or at least quasi-living? Maybe in the cartoon they’ve been downgraded to palmtops with a teleport link. Two more episodes before total finale?

Flip side of listening to audio books, OTR, etc… my eyes actually shut off a little when I focus on my ears. My multitasking skills are weak when it comes to processing sensory inputs, it seems.

Looks like the Hukilau is progressing nicely! The New Website is up, and it’s looking sharp. Great music, too. A shame it’s all flash, but it’s lovely, nonetheless.

If folks are going to be in Fort Lauderdale at the top of October, I hope to see you there!

I have to remember to call and set reservations tomorrow morning, so I don’t forget later on.

954-563-3272 I think I’ll hit the 7pm show, rather than the 10. I wonder if I could lure Danny into going? Doubtful, as it’ll be well into the school schedule. Maybe I can tempt him by sending him to the Dames A’flame website.

BRING ON MONKEY ZUMA!

Made tentative plans for Danny on Thursday. Moroccan food and belly dancers, maybe?

Bro had me make a phone call for him to get a ride from some clown with a Texas number on his cell phone. Whoever I called is pretty shady. He called me from “Uncle Bob’s”, his storage facility on Sample in Pompano.

Criminy… a Speed Racer Geico commercial? I’m pretty impressed.. the got the voice talent spot on.

Random Scotto Factoid – Speed Racer is how I found the link between 5 and the board game “Go”. (A lot of Japanese show titles make a bilingual pun out of “go,” the Japanese word for “five” and the English word for, well, “go.” That’s why Speed Racer’s car is the Mach 5 — the Japanese name of the show is Maku Go Go Go)

Have they gotten around to showing classic ‘toons again on the cartoon network? I’d dig watching some of Speed Racer and the Herculoids sometime. Any show where characters are named “Lightfingers Klepto, Jr” or “Ivonna von Vondervon” is fairly groovy to me.

CVS seems to charge for food by weight rather than content. A packet of cereal, cheese crackers, cookies or a soft drink all seem to go for about $.05 per ounce, give or take. Maybe I’m making connections where there are none.

The initials stand for “Customer, Value, Service”. I suspect most of the employees at the store on Broward and Federal don’t know this.

Recent comments is a good way to stay on top of posts if mail doesn’t come in a timely manner.

Dr. Who was another follow up episode from a prior one (This time, the TV Satellite one, a hundred years later). More consequences. I didn’t think that I’d be too fond, but I really rather liked it. One of the major plot points was pretty obvious, but it mostly served to push to the season finale.

I appreciate Jack’s Holdout skills. “It’s a pleasure, which is the only thing that matters in the end.” Which means I still don’t like his character very much. I’m starting to wonder if the Doctor is going to pick up a stray every third episode, give or take?

Again, I wonder about the suggested age group for the show. It’s still written for clever 10-year olds, but has more sexual overtones and violent innuendo than I’d like for a 10-year old to see. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it. The market for most science fiction/action shows doesn’t have to be very intelligent, just entertaining… sex (well, at least “Single entendres”) and violence (bloodless ray-beam death, and exploding aliens) are certainly that. It’s still more intelligently written than anything the Sci-fi channel has produced.

I suspect that I’m being too much of a prude, and it’s really written as popcorn for 13-years rather than a younger group.

Moment of Lyric:

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become

Track 15 of 53 (about 4 hours) of Going Postal. Quite pleasant to listen to while eating dinner and petting the cat. Much like old-time radio. Goes a lot slower than my standard reading speed… I can usually grind out a whole book in that span, but the voice talent is a nice trade-off. I’m in no rush, after all. He does a superb Igor, in particular.

Not a bad way to fill time while locked in.

[EDIT: – I slept in until 12:30??? The night was longer than I thought!]

Got a free pie after having to wait 2 hours. I called at the one hour mark, and they mentioned he was on his way… called again at the 1:45 mark, as my place is about 3/4 mile from the delivery joint. Turns out the delivery guy was pinned in at the beach…. I still tipped the guy, as he was friendly and apologetic. When all is said and done, I didn’t mind sitting tight a bit for a large pineapple and green pepper pizza for $2.

Grabbed the Pilot for Global Frequency… pretty typical Sci-Fi channel fare. It has the potential to be a good show, if they step away from the needless stutter-cut/bullet time/speedup-slowdown film/ matrix crap. A neat idea… I hadn’t read the comic, so I don’t know how it compares to the source material. If it got some good writing and stays away from “my cell phone is a mother box” scenarios, I think it’d be a nice blend of Delta Green style Mission Impossible vs. The X-files.

Haven’t watched the new Who episode yet, but I’m sure I will have before bedtime tonight. I have no idea why it came down the pipe so slow… 1600 seeders, and I was only getting 26kB/s? The Daily Show was giving me 165!

I don’t know why nobody seems to seed Kim Possible. It’s the only show I can’t seem to fill my queue with. Thank goodness for DC++ and bittorrent… Since I got NetFlix, I really don’t need to mooch movies online, so it’s all strictly TV rips these days. That reminds me, I need to swap out my current stack of movies, and see what’s heading my way. The first Season of Carnivale and Get a Life, I think. *There’s* a dandy combination.

I forgot about my writing assignment again until just now. I wonder if I’ll ever get around to doing it properly.. doing an outline, writing a rough, stepping away for a day and coming back to edit cleanly. It seems that they’re always born whole cloth, no real structure outside of a scene or two, and just stitched together as I go. Bad form. I think keeping a journal these last few years has actually helped to make me a lazy writer, contrary to my original plan.

If all goes well, I see MP next weekend. I’ve got to clean up the apartment, as I’ve let it go to bachelor slack again.

oneeyedcat and her “praise the lord” bracelets got me thinking about something. Jesus had all those loaves and fishes going on…. nobody thought to make a fish sandwich? (About 1700 or so years before this guy invented it.)

Mister Little Brown Mousie made an appearance yesterday evening, but then high-tailed it behind the fridge. I was afraid to move it, for fear of killing the little guy, so I put Newt in the bathroom, got the broom, and opened my front door in an attempt to make some noise to flush him out and send him packing. No dice. It’s driving me to distraction… I don’t want to hurt him, so I’m going to have to get creative if I want to evict my new housemate.

Speaking of food and large groups:

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has released a game called Food Force. Available for download for free, the game is compatible with Macs and PCs. The WFP’s goal in releasing Food Force is to educate players about world hunger and the work the aid agency does.

The game puts players in charge of a hunger relief effort on the fictional Indian Ocean island of Sheylan, ravaged by a civil war, flooding and drought. You lead a crack multinational team of WFP professionals including a logistics officer, nutritionist and air drop specialist, and you must lead the team through six missions to bring food and supplies to the desperate natives of Sheylan — everything from air surveillance to figuring out a good balanced diet, airdropping supplies, and helping natives get the most out of their natural resources by planning future farming efforts.

Yesterday, I got a post in my journal from Havagan… haven’t heard from him in an age. I rather thought he might show up at the trip to Sith with Kev and the FMM crew, but no such luck. He left IMT/FMM when? Last time I mentioned him in my Journal was 8/8/2001 (or his real name on 1/24/2001), and was already gone (as was Tman and Pixx)

The Momster & Wilt are going on a cruise next week, and she brought over some stuff that wasn’t going to make it through the time they’ll be gone. Score me some blueberry yogurt, granola and diet coke. It came at a good time, because Mr. Cupboard is bare, save for some green beans and tomato soup. yummy, but not exactly breakfast fare. She also gave me a double sawbuck for dinner and a movie, which was quite welcome, too.

RI on Friday raised the question to me in front of everyone else “Who would you say is the most sane person in this office?” and then narrowed it down to just her and me. I answered that sanity is a pretty subjective term, but that I thought that I had a more calm and balanced demeanor, and that she had more personality quirks than I do. (Which is saying something. I think that I’m a pretty quirky guy.) She then got a little perturbed… I think because she wanted to set herself up as the bastion of stability or something. She then wanted me to list out her quirks for her… I really didn’t have any more time to put into that conversation ,and I told her that I’d point ’em out as I saw them. She seemed really surprised… I wonder what set off that conversation before I arrived back at the office?

Speaking of which, note to so many people lately who “keep it real” or whatever: You can tell the truth and explain how you feel about things without being a jerk. People who say “I’m not a bitch, I just tell the truth” seem to think that they’re mutually exclusive. Not the case. You can be up front with a person and not be vulgar about the whole thing.

Got to meet Chloe-puppy and she’s adorable as can be. A four month old baby toy yorkie, about the size of 1/3 of Newton (and weighs even less)

7440 – Saturday, in the computer room, with the rope.

Thick rain, but didn’t sleep much last night. On call today… hopefully it’ll be nice and peaceful. EN forgot to launch the SP calls at 7 pm last night, so I’m going to fire ’em off tonight.

Some slight ankle-pain in my left leg. I wonder if it’s a result of my drop foot and the weather pressure change?

Somehow, a little brown mouse got into the house after all the rain last night – he ran under my dresser, and Newt wants a piece of him really badly. Neither Newt or myself can get at the little guy right now, but it’s only a matter of time.

Downloaded the Audios of Hat Full of Sky and Going Postal, since I couldn’t locate it in text format. We’ll see if I can get into listening to the book on the bus rather than reading it. If they’re good, I may go back and get the rest in that format. The problem with audio is that I can go from active to passive listening, and miss things during change of focus. When I read, it’s always active. If I had the book playing in the background while I read LJ or the like, audio will still be head, but some subtleties can drop off. Snatched TV like Lost or Dr. Who is easier to grip, because my eyes are on it.

From your vantage point in front of the computer, you spy, with your little eye…

1. Something that is red:
Stripe on the Burger King building across the parking lot. I want hash browns. I get none.

2. Something that is shiny:
Rain puddle outside. little drops are still splashing in it

3: Something that is ugly:
Beige Painted-over wood paneling

4. Something that is made of wood:
Froggy Noisemaker from Danny.

5. Something that is sharp:
Hmm… not much here. nothing with an edge, but my mechanical pencil could puncture you!
