LJ Word Count (Beta!) by hutta

6546 And so, the day begins anew.

So… it’s morning again, is it? Sunday was a lot less crazy-busy than Saturday, thank goodness. So little took place that I had to call the number to be sure that it was working. (it was). Pretty good, considering this is spring break season.

Dawn of the Dead this afternoon… no high hopes but looking for a fun diversion, hopefully better than the Texas chainsaw remake.

Catarina called me up from DD’s yesterday and let me know that the outdoor preggers kitty had 5 babies… anyone in the West Palm Beach region going to be in the market for an adorable kitten or two, six weeks from now? (That is, if she doesn’t become super attached to all of em… baby kitties are very appealing, and she’s got a slight cat-lady tendency already. One indoor, and one outdoor.)

I wish I knew more about Spanish politics… I really have no idea how to filter all the information that I’ve been receiving about the recent bombing and election there. somehow, I think it’s a pretty complex web, and I’ve only looked at two or three strands.

I did a quickie search on JTD,Jr , wondering where he’s been and what’s new… looks like he hasn’t updated his website in about nine months… and no copyright updates this year, something that was pretty important to him when I knew him. I’m guessing he’s still alive, as he’s listed as a guest at a JAFAX, which happens at the end of June. I saw that his mom was online, so I sent a pleasantry to her, figuring I could say hi, and see what was new… but after sending a hey there, she logged off. She’s kind of the flake of that family, so it’s not unexpected. I was pretty friendly with that family for a few years… an oddball crew, but wasn’t bad. Where JTD is and what he’s up to as of June of last year is still a bit of a mystery. My interest isn’t high enough to warrant more than a 5-minute cursory search. I’ll look again in a year, maybe.

Never mind that there aren’t any tigers in Kenya. The song is a zippy little tune.

Internet Movie archive… most popular free feature film download is the original Night of the Living Dead, closely followed by Reefer Madness, Gunsmoke Ranch, Sex Madness and D.O.A.

So enchanted with it, I created a Livejournal feed to notify me when they add more public domain films to the list… filmadd_feed I’ve created one for recent additions to the Internet Movie archive… Hooray for DOA and Night of the living dead, freely available for download, and all legal, to boot!

I already had NotLD (grabbed it a Halloween or two ago from somewhere), but DOA! hot dog… that’s some classic noir right there. Much better than that Dennis Quaid pseudo-remake in ’88. As an opener, I also grabbed the 3 Stooges short: Sing a song of Six Pants. I recommend downloading with something that can resume, because the timeout factor can be fairly high at certain times.

robo-ellie won! Discovery had an interesting show on… “Animal Face-off: Great White Shark vs Saltwater Crocodile” sort of a bio-science / robotic simulation version of those old fanboy arguments… “Who’s Stronger? Superman or Captain Marvel? Could Wolverine beat the Hulk in a fight?” The next one was Rhino vs Elephant. I understandably bet on the elephant, based on ellie being nearly twice the mass of a rhino, and because rhinos are notoriously dull-witted “run and impale types”. Plus, I just like elephants more. I wonder what will become of the hydraulic robo-heads once the show is over? Ebay, maybe?

Hmm… This one strikes sort of close to home… Tiger vs Grizzly. Newt and I get along just fine, thanks.

Something about the show; I didn’t like the Shark expert’s use of the term “prey item”… it seemed redundant. Isn’t “prey” usually sufficient? They weren’t referring to a number of prey units or anything like that. They also appear to need more eye protection during the testing.

The Croc footage on the show was amazing, plucking large bats out of midair with a 27 mph leap from the water, and taking out a zebra out of nowhere. The Shark footage was equally impressive, but stuff I’d seen many times before… It’s hard to cover new ground after shark week a few months back, and all the post-Jaws documentaries seen as a kid. Even though the shark ultimately won, crocs are more frightening to me because they’re amphibious. Want to avoid a shark? Stay seven feet from the water’s edge, and you should be fine. Want to avoid a croc? Get in the car, and drive away.

Speaking of which, it’s time I launch!

Until later, dear journal.

6545 google local, disclaimer, zombie figs, archives

Playing with google’s “local search“, I sought out monkeys near zip code 33301. I don’t rightly know why Jiffy Lube came up on the list… Grease Monkeys, maybe?

When I did a local search for cannibals you know, just to be safe… I get The Local Bar Association( that figures), an Office supply center, and a bunch of Temp agencies! FOR THE LOVE OF ZEUS, POST IT NOTES ARE MADE OF PEOPLE!! PEOPLE!! /Heston in a scarf.

I wonder if that’s legalese enough?

Cool Zombie Miniatures… I would love to have all of ’em! It would take forever to paint, but be worth it. It’d certainly make the Zombies!! beer and pretzels game a lot more varied and colorful. (The minis that come with the game are ok, but all identical. They need to vary the mix a wee bit. Mage Knight Zombies (ebay link, don’t take those prices seriously, just a way to see varied piccies) I swear, if I wanted to make some cash, I’d put all the plastic monsters I don’t have slotted to armies for sale, and see how much I could make.

Didn’t visit bro at the jail yesterday, on call during the time he’d have been available. Still haven’t heard from him via phone.

a year ago – palm pic, whiskerliscious-fuzzy-paw newt-pic, cat eaters, the coffee song, interviewed @ starmark,

2 years ago– radiology, reading lensmen books, riker in trouble for DVDing, corpse tupperware, Elisabeth, and a bunch of dead links.

3 years ago – IMT politics, and so on.

6544 Zombies, doors and today’s work

(feel free to answer in comments, and elaborate.)

What do I think? I think it is… not one that should always be accepted, mind you, dear journal.

Also, Mmmm… waffles.

I’m considering a little day trip to the Dawn of the Dead movie on Monday. I’ve heard that these zombies are quick, not shamblers, and that there’s no pivotal helicopter, but the rest is pretty much the same.

Today’s cases have kept me going like gangbusters, and it seems that nine year old boys with black hair, weighing 90 lbs is the golden mean. four of em. 2 solos, and a pair together. Not to mention the 37 year old bipolar woman, the 75 year old Alzheimer’s gent, or the 16 year old habitual runaway that already has a tattoo on her neck.

This is just since 12:30 this afternoon.

Good news is that over half have been found by the police, neighbors, family or friends already. (the duo, a soloist, and the 75er.)

Random Scotto factoid –

I think everyone has worth, some kind of value. I might not like particular people, but I think that they have a reason and rhyme to be the way they are. Like other items of value, some I like to keep nearby, and others I’d prefer were kept as far from me as possible. (Gold and Plutonium both fetch a nice market value, you know…)

Everyone has loved or been loved by someone at some point. I believe that everyone has made *some* kind of difference is someone else’s life, and that’s a kind of connectivity that makes us all part of a common whole. Nobody is born and lives in a vacuum. I wonder sometimes how far things can be read back… a friendly smile or someone giving the finger can set whole chain reactions in place. Mind you, I think that there are times when flipping someone off is required… even a punch in the jaw might be needed to put patterns in place to help the world flow a little more smoothly. However, extending a hand to help someone else, or to make some other friendly gesture is far more often the useful maneuver.

Bottom line? I don’t know. I’m rambling a bit. A good fundamental rule is “Don’t be an asshole, you’re better than that.”Site Meter

Really getting into OpenOffice… the database side is rather dependent on outside sources, though there are ODBC workarounds. I *really* prefer the presentation software to powerpoint. (Outputs presentations to Flash/ pdf , if I like… nice!)

Best of all, if all goes well, it can be installed at the company, and then site lisc’s will no longer be an issue. I half want to make the jump all the way to Linux boxes, but I don’t see that happening.

I figured out who the woman at the local sandwich shop looks like. The Russian speaking woman/maid/number two from the Prisoner episode where #6 ran for office.(Free for all).

Had a visit with Danny after all… we went to Mangoes for a bite, after roaming Los Olas briefly (Big Kahuna was kind enough to take call from 8-12:30 this morning, and may do the same for me tomorrow.) It’s really fun to people-watch, especially if I have a fellow observer. It was quick, he came by at about 10:30, and was off at about 12:15, but we got to talk about this, that and the other. (Mainly, His Mrs, His Work, My Work, City of Heroes, the nature of relationships and his Halfling guy with the Sci-fi club’s RPG game.)

Breakfast Haiku –

Sugar-free monkey

6542 before bedski

My City of Heroes prelim CD came today.. man, it looks even better than the other previews have hinted at. Maybe I can lure in a few other folks, along with Whims and Rik.

Danny’s got a dental issue, so we might not get together for breakfast… Dentist in the morning, and then a 1:30 appointment. Disappointing, but see the music.

Christopher Eccleston has been named as the new Doctor Who to front the cult BBC sci-fi show when it returns next year.

6540 – dear latest lj spammer…friday five

Very clever of you to spam in a *reply* to a comment in my journal, rather than the entry itself (from comcast’s 24.62.254.122 in entry 6483, to be exact.)

I don’t know what flowers and gift baskets have to do with an entry about Newt
the cat and thin-mint cookies, though, so you will remain screened. My only concern is that spammers will start dropping luncheon-meat on other people commenting in my journal.

But, in the meantime, Neener neener, spammer!

Of course, now I want to go right home and curl up with Newt and some cookies.

I’m going ot be on call all weekend, but I’m within safe range to breakfast with at Einstein’s tomorrow. I’ll have the clipboard with me, and by the time I get all the info, I’ll be inside my home-office online.

I think I’ll get a “big box o’ bagels & schmear” to ride out the weekend with.

Friday Five…

If you…

1. …owned a restaurant, what kind of food would you serve?

Snacks you can eat with your hands. Veggie platters / Cookies / Cheese / fingerfoods / etc. Tasty, and I don’t have to wash silverware!

2. …owned a small store, what kind of merchandise would you sell?

Handmade art, homemade herbal tea, shrunken heads, weird toys & curios

3. …wrote a book, what genre would it be?

modern fiction with a few twilight-zone elements – twist ending, weird science

4. …ran a school, what would you teach?

mythology, monkey politics, logic

5. …recorded an album, what kind of music would be on it?

a lot of novelty stuff, maybe a spoken-word thing… a comic/album combo for “Gorilla Girl IN STEREO!” if I could get my beloved, Gray Pumpkin, Katt, Danny, and myself all in the same studio. Maybe I could drag in some other pals for voicework, too.

6538 mushrooms with top-hats, tap-dancing on spider legs

It’s interesting seeing my entries read via other people’s pages…different colors and fonts do seem to make a difference. I get quite an alternate vibe just by a subtle change in style.

I’m in a quiet mood this morning… more interested in playing with Newt than writing in my journal.

6536 Florida Department of Law Enforcement Feed

Well, I went and Created another News feed for my livejournal… this time it’s the FDLE (Florida Dept of Law Enforcement)

Headlines and press releases for the FDLE can be found at –

http://www.livejournal.com/users/fdle_feed/

based on the information page here –

http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/alerts/

Folks can add it to their own lj reading list (if they so desire) with this link –

I think that at this point, I link to more syndicated, non-lj sites than actual lj-ers. (easier to skim, too)

6535 Hound dogs, sunshine, french fries, and fresh cut lawns

The morning has arrived, and it will just have to wait outside, until I’m ready. A hot shower, maple oatmeal and a quick once over the journal before launch, first.

Hey, the Astronaut Jones theme is on the Tracy Morgan site again!

I need a new hat protect myself from the sun… my ball cap has been missing for weeks…maybe months. A visor would help out a great deal. I could stand to have a nice goofy-floppy one like Square Bear. Maybe as an added bonus, I’ll get the power to summon an invisible motorcycle! (or share a lovely glass of wine?)

Strongbad #100. Thanks for the notification, jennylee! (not to be confused with this one…)

Frank R. Paul Gallery – great stuff. classic Sci-fi Pulp cover art. He’s the guy responsible for all the giant saw-bladed, people strapped to lab tables and tentacled alien stuff I think of when reflecting on old SF. Also… just he name Planet of the Knob Heads cracks me up.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction has this to say about Frank R. Paul: “FRP is the best candidate for ‘Father of Modern SF illustration’, at least in the form it took in the pulp magazines. He received much of his education in Vienna, and studied also in Paris and New York. Trained as an architect, he was discovered by [editor] Hugo Gernsback in 1914 while working for a rural newspaper. Their names have been virtually inseparable ever since the days of Electrical Experimenter.Site Meter

6533 – email post – Home page is alive again! good deal!

my sub-pages are up and working again… the only thing lost was the tagboard
on my toybox… which hasn’t seen use in weeks, anyhow. I’ll replace it with a guestbook later on. My primary concern was Newtcam and Blog page (the only
really dynamic sections of my site.)

My scottobear.com mail should be working again, too… right after I sent a mass mailing out to about 20 people informing them that mail has been dropped into a black hole last week. Ah well, I’ll get it straightened out again.

Rik and Whims are both tempting me with the City of Heroes pre-release. I don’t think Sammy’ll be too keen on it, given how rough FFXI was on him.

I’ll probably play, at least for a month, if my schedule will permit it
comfortably. I’m thinking I’ll probably stick with a variant on La
Grenouielle… Green suit, superleap, long ranged attack, other toad-like
powers. Science or Nature Based SFX, I think.

=====

6532 Week continues to roll on.

Danny’s solo this week… wife’s attending her nephew’s funeral in NC. A pity I’m slammed with being on call this weekend, due to MA having a wedding to attend. Bah! Hopefully, I can get ADP to cover on Friday, to make up for being sick last night. Sat/Sun is bad enough… I’ve been spoiled by lucky schedules in recent weekends. Maybe we can do a breakfast on Sat, if we stay close to the HQ.Site Meter

Watched the first Austin Powers movie last night… probably the first time I’ve seen it in about 5 years. I forgot how good the first one was, before it was diluted by the sequels and unfunny people saying “yeah, baby, yeah!” It was nice to see it fresh again after so many years.
