8810 – RANDOM ACCESS
Work is interviewing for the network position today. I wonder when or if they’ll be asking me to sit with them today? I’m curious about the number of applicants.
When playing punch buggy my eyes tend to detect color first, then shape. I’m much less likely to see a white, black, gray/silver or navy blue bug than standouts like yellow, red or the brighter variants of blue and green. However, The “toaster” look of the Honda element is a good standout for me over colors. I can lock onto one of those much more easily than the bug. The dual-color ones seem to be easier for me to spot than the one-tones.
I have to dig up my birth certificate in order to get my driver’s license. It seems that my Florida state id isn’t enough. Bah.
Didn’t mow the lawn, and didn’t roto-till the garden, as it was too wet from the lovely rainy weekend. That’ll probably happen next Saturday.
Tomorrow, I’ll have been working for the county a month. That seems odd to me, somehow. I guess Friday will be a true work-month due to days off, etc.
Tina’s back from points elsewhere today, so we’ll probably have her over for an early dinner of falafel tonight. After that, I’m going to have to get one the stick, regarding the quest for more continuous employment.
Limited News source says that there are 21 dead at Virginia tech [edit- 32 dead, 28 wounded] – I don’t get how this happens. How broken in the head does a person have to be to run around a campus and start killing people with twin 9mm pistols? Sadly, my first mental image was that of the Shadow, with twin .45s barking out hot metal justice, but he’s a pulp fiction vigilante, not an actual insane non-fictional type being.
Found out that bro is breaking his probation already – Mom and WV went down to where they’d set his apartment up, and discovered that the place was empty. His probation officer called her looking for him, so it’s only a matter of time before he’s back in the clink. Turns out neither his rent, cell phone bill, nor his car insurance have been paid, so he’ll be driving with a suspended license in an uninsured vehicle. I’ll be checking the net periodically to let me know if he’s back in the pokey. [edit – he was evicted on 4/11]
I think I like stones and jewelry made from organic substances more than inorganic.
Pearls, amber, mastodon ivory, bone in general all had some sort of life-aspect about them before they were put into settings or whatnot.
Could the ghost of an oyster / tree haunt pearls / amber?
JD offered me some deer meat that he got while hunting. He bagged 13 last season, gave 10 to the hungry, and kept 3 in his freezer. The county electrician is apparently a great butcher.

Cable Modem… *NOT*. The guys came by, and it turns out the cable box on the outside pole hadn’t changed yet… 2 hours later, a cherry picker drives by and upgrades the pole. I’ve called back, and the internet will be supposedly installed tomorrow between 8am-Noon. We shall See!

8612 – 2 days to trip!
I didn’t get to hit ¡Viva Broward! yesterday… I ran out of time. Today, however is a new day… I think I’ll trundle down there for a midday bit of entertainment.
Got a mild interrogation from someone at the pool on the way back from grocery shopping yesterday. I was toting a double armload of groceries, heading to my place; when a guy at the pool area calls over to me.
Guy:”Hey, you!”
Me:”Hi! Can I help you?”
G:”Do you live here?”
M:”Yup!”
G:”Which unit?”
(*note* – at no time did he ask my name, or say anything in a non-interrogatory style. )
M:”323D… can I help you?”
G:”No, I just wanted to know.”
(*note* – Did he think I was a hoodlum of some sort? That I was going to use packages of peanut butter crackers, deodorant, light bulbs, and a half-dozen liters of Diet Doctor Pepper to do some crazy MacGuyver evil on the complex?)
M:”Oh. What unit do you live in?”
G:”304A”
M:”Nice place. Have a good one.”
And I walked away.
He didn’t reply.
Wacky.
I didn’t look shabby or anything… wearing a nice clean Hawaiian style golf shirt, short hair, clean shaved, maybe perspiring a bit, due to toting the barge.
I figure I can look him up in the condo directory later… I’ll get the lowdown from Jesus-bread lady and/or the Condo Superhero sometime today, I’m sure.

What would happen if everyone on Earth suddenly vanished without a trace? Although that’s totally impossible, of course, a new article speculates on how long it would take for all traces of today’s human civilization to be reclaimed by the earth’s natural processes.

Moment of Lyric – mp3 (Via X-entertainment’s great halloween jukebox)
In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there’ll be hell to pay
People listen attentively
I mean about future calamity
I used to think the idea was obsolete
Until I heard the old man stamping his feet.
This is a place where eternally
Fire is applied to the body
Teeth are extruded and bones are ground
Then baked into cakes which are passed around.
Beauty, talent, fame, money, refinement
Top skill and brain
But all the things you try to hide
Will be revealed on the other side.
Now the d and the a and the m
And the n and the a
And the t and the i-o-n
Lose your face, lose your name
Then get fitted for a suit of flame

8342 – Q has the lowdown on what happened to LJ recently –
There was quite a bit of teeth gnashing across the web throughout the evening yesterday as TypePad, LiveJournal, and all the other hosted Six Apart websites went dark; we learned late in the night that the cause was a “sophisticated distributed denial of service attack” against the sites. Digging a little deeper, though, it doesn’t look like this is a particularly accurate description of what happened — but instead of this being a case of the folks at Six Apart trying to cover up some internal issue, it instead looks like they’re being far too gracious in not revealing more about another company, Blue Security, which appears to have been responsible for the whole disaster. An explanation of this requires a slight bit of background.

I don’t know what I was thinking… that all of the homeless would pack up and go into lockdown, but they seemed even more populous than ever on the ride to work yesterday. I mentally tallied 36 as the bus rolled by them.
Big Brain’s video card arrived damaged. Murphy’s law, I imagine. They’re sending another one, and it should be installed by Friday. Gary, the Head muck-de-muck apologized again, and gave me “his personal guarantee” that it would be installed and my machine would be ready for use by Friday after work.
Yeah, yeah, right, right. We’ll see.
Is it a sign of Newt really disliking my mashed potatoes if he hops on the table and scratches, trying to cover it up like it was in the sandbox? I suspect the chives are what set him off.
Moment of Lyric: (video link)
After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footsteps dressed in red
And the wind whispers Mary
A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterdays life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries Mary
The traffic lights, they turn, uh, blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags down stream
’cause the life that lived is,
Is dead
And the wind screams Mary
Uh-will the wind ever remember
The names it has blow in the past?
And with this crutch, it’s old age, and it’s wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary

8104 – system still out for repair.
This card is my problem with compusa, along with really poor communication or support /offering of alternatives.
In a nutshell, it’s been since November 10th that my Computer has been at the shop… everything else needing repair is fixed according to them.
Verto GeForce FX 5950 Ultra Video Card, AGP, 256MB DDR
Nvidia
Manufacturer: PNY
Mfg Part #: VCGFX595APB
Product Number: 308120
$499.88
However, that bad boy has been out of stock at the manufacturer, and at all known compusa stores in a 50-mile radius for the last 8 weeks.
With a $500 price tag, I’m obliged to wait, because I really can’t drop that chunk of change on something that I should be getting under warranty.
The guys at the shop have given me two timelines, both of which have passed, now. I’m not quite sure what I can do, save for waiting.
Meanwhile, I have to do my work on poor ol’ Battered lappie, My Toshiba satillite back from a time when Windows Me (I’ve long since replaced that with win2k pro) was “cutting edge”.
I’d say that the only time I’ve had worse customer service/ communication was with Comcast… I have since boycotted them, though I’ve heard that they might not be so bad in other areas outside of SoFla.
Not having big brain has cost me some very significant social chat and play time in 2nd Life, LAN party activities with the old FMM crowd are out of the picture… plus, all of my downloaded movies / Netflix DVD archives are ground to a halt while the machine is gone… not to mention a lack of Newtcam.
I never realised how many people watched good ol’ Newt during the day… I’ve gotten somthing like 80 emails politely requesting when he’ll be back online again. If Big Brain is down another week, I’ll hook Newtcam up to Lappie so folks can get an orange kitty fix.
I can only imagine what happens when pretty girls shut off their webcams. I suspect horny stalker-type guys aren’t nearly as polite as cat fanciers.
8098 – Andy in lockup. Let’s see how he likes it.
Bro’s pal Andy was arrested today. He’s under wraps until September 26 for that grand theft charge and “resisting a merchant”… I’ll have to look that one up.
See mugshot gallery to compare, or entries on 2/24/04, 2/25/04, 11/21/04, 1/30/05, 6/7/05, somewhere in 7/2005, 8/3/05.
I really hope that means bro will keep his nose clean for a little while.

8062 – Fri-day-yay!
I’ve said that more than a few times in my life.
I’ll refrain from pointing any fingers today, mostly because it seems like that no matter where I point, I’ll hit that situation regardless.
Computer’s video card is on backorder. What the heck. Expected a in a week or so. Cripes… at this rate, I’d just be happy to get my device back before my birthday at the top of February.
Took paperwork home with me last night, just so I could get it finished, because the office needs have been so hectic the past week or two that I can’t sit down for 90 minutes to crank out the proper thought required for the police interviews, data crunching, and etc without being bugged ever 15-20 minutes for something like “Scott, could you show me how to forward my email to someone again?” or “Burn me 20 CDs of that PowerPoint Presentation, would you?… oh, and could you customize ’em for the departments?”
Brainless, tedious stuff, but the vast majority of the folks there just don’t know how to do that sort of thing… and what’s more, they don’t want to learn how. So, I go from being an underpaid Net Admin / Webmaster / Police Liason / Child Advocate, and turn into a highly paid power user because every 4/5 people there is a technical uglato.

Christmas at the ‘borgs in ’96. (Compare to the ‘borgs in ’05) Cathi hasn’t aged save for longer hair, Elizabeth is a young lady rather than a tot. I’ve lost weight and some of my beard, Dave’s Gained a little weight, and Who knows where Eryn, Brian, Brian, and Bev are… Leisa’s a mommy, as is Cathi. I still have that shirt, last worn on walkabout 2 weeks ago. It’s still in great shape… amazingly comfy and durable. Only a wee bit faded.
Thursday already! Old man 2005 is going to make way for Baby 2006’s stinky diaper very soon!
I called CompUSA yesterday, and requested a progress report on my system, including an ETA on the Graphics card that was due nearly two weeks ago. After being on hold for about 15 minutes, they said that they’d call me back shortly with the answer. They never did.
ADP came by the office yesterday, all sweetness and light. She wants her job back, because she hates her new one. I really don’t see *that* happening. She and RS are semi-buds these days, now that ADP is no longer a part of the company.

re: the get together at mom’s place… bro was asked specifically to show up in a drug/alcohol-free state, so mom wouldn’t be embarrassed in front of Wilts’ folks. He arrived after having stopped off at the bar, looking grimy and disheveled. He mentioned that his pressure cleaning biz is taking off and showed me that he had some funds in the bank… good for him. Maybe he can pay back some of the dinero he owes the momster or me. I caught him in lies a few times during the day, including how he got there “a friend” “a bus” and if he’d been drinking.
I don’t think that I’ll be sharing me addy with him anytime soon, especially since he lied to me about being in Boynton. He declined a ride home, I suspect because he didn’t want to have to turn around and go back to Hollywood.
On the upside, Wilt, mom, Rosa, Yitzi and the rest of the guests were cool enough, and there was a ton of food. (I brought home a lot of broccoli casserole and a tin of cookies). There was an interesting blend of Portuguese, Hebrew and English conversations going on….I wish I understood more of the non-English stuff that was going on in my periphery.
I’d already received my big giftie, (the futon mattress and cover), but my sticking had some more goodies in it. A few Newt toys (I think he’s still partial to the toys he got from the Strawberry shortcake bag when Lisa/Lisa visited) and I got the usual stocking fare. Lip Balm, a new toothbrush, hand sanitizer, some chocolates, a notepad and sharpie pen.
Thanks to Sandy for the flickr pro account!
