8487 – Good Morning, Dear Journal!

Lovely talk on the phone last night, that went well into the wee hours. I simply didn’t want to hang up, but fatigue eventually drew me to snooze-ville. I woke up about an hour later and stumbled upon an interesting lj, and ended up engaged in some interesting conversation there, too.

I’m not feeling fatigued this morning, and I got my first pente defeat at the hands of bhk, trying to sink The Dreaded Pirate Greybeard’s Pente-ship Barkin’ Lotus!

Dice Wars – very simple, but addictive. I think proximity is a lot of fun, too. It has a revered place on my pda.

I heard a great quote the other day – “True nobility is not about being better than anyone else, but being better than you used to be.”

Beautiful thought, and I’m all for it.

Video: Microsoft Vista speech recognition demo gone bad

Dear aunt, let’s set so double the killer delete select all.

The XP recognition works reasonably well for me, save for some of the more esoteric phrases.

Animated movie from 787 clip art samples. I really like it.

Mighty Illegal Wireless Hotspot Hacks – the most useful thing for me was showing how to make my laptop a hot spot. Some very interesting info that can be reapplied a few different ways, but mostly importantly, insure the validity of where you connect.

Still unsure what I’m up to today – no word on putt-putt or movies or whatnot, but I’m off to get ready for my day. Shower, Yoga and morning walkies. Until later, dear journal.

8441 – Friday! T-minus 28:30 until My Launch for the Keys!

Nice time with the Danster last night. He’s probably at about 50% go for Dragon*con. I’ll be going unless some unexpected financial issue comes up to stop me. He had curried duck, and I had a boatload of veggie sushi. He paid for dinner, and I bought us 3 packs of pirates each… and I got a sea monster! Calyspos (traded from Danny for a huge French Clipper ship… fair trade, both are rare, he’s got a nice French fleet, and my Spanish fleet would love to have a giant squid on its team)

Danny also gifted me with Darwinia as a pleasant surprise, as well. I imagine that I’ll spend nice bit of time fiddling with that, too.

Looks like it might be a bit rainy down south this weekend.

Sometimes, a Brain in a jar quoting Nietzsche to a Super-intelligent Gorilla can make me misty.

My land line took a bad bounce, and now the ringer no longer works. I can still send and receive calls, but have no idea when an incoming call is… well, incoming, unless it’s call waiting while I’m on the phone already, or if I’m actively looking at the caller ID. I think I’ll just forward it to my cell phone for the weekend, anyhow.

8409 – What sort of Chess Piece do you move like?

Why? (answer in comments, my answer is below)

Poll was brought on by hearing that the knight on a chessboard has to move in an “L” shape because back then, the horse had to be turned left or right for the knight to get close enough to hit someone with a sword or mace.

Sometimes I think that I shuffle that way, behaviorally (is that a word?). I move off to the side, and then a bit forward. (or vice versa) It seems to progress effectively, I have to shift a bit, laterally.

It’s also worth noting that I am *horrid* at chess… I still haven’t grasped the best strategies of the game. I do very well at simpler ones, like Go, Othello (Reversi), Pente, Checkers, and the likeGeotarget

8287 – Textures intrigue me.

The Zombie Horde Counterstrike mod is a lot of fun. Zombies with no ranged attacks that can only be hurt with a head shot on one side, soldiers that can’t camp in zombie-free zones in the other. much fun.

A gold plated six story house in the shape of a pyramid.

Built by Mr. and Mrs. Onan, which made me laugh all the more. (We used to have a bird named Onan, because he was known for spilling his seed upon the ground.)

In my head during shower and shave this morning –

How do?xRABBIT-OF-SEVILLE
Welcome to my shop, let me cut your mop, let me shave your crop
Daintily, daintily
Hey you!
Don’t look so perplexed, why must you be vexed, can’t you see you’re next
Yes you’re next, you’re so next
How about a nice close shave
Teach your whiskers to behave
Lots of lather lots of soap
Please hold still don’t be a dope
Now we’re ready for the scraping
There’s no use to try escaping
Oh, wait until I get that rabbit
Yell & scream & rant & rave
It’s no use you need a shave
(oh ouch ouch oh ouch oh oh ouch)
There, you’re nice and clean
Although your face looks like it might have gone through a machine
What would you want with a rabbit
Can’t you see that I’m much sweeter
I’m your little senorit-ar
You are my type of guy
Let me straighten your tie
And I shall dance for you

Devo 2.0

Disney owns Devo… and has kids doing covers of the songs…. and now they’re on tour. It’s a Beautiful World.

I just have to laugh every time I see kids singing “jerkin’ back and forth” or “whip it” for Mickey-Corp.

So long, Tom DeLay.

Bush said the Republican Party won’t suffer from DeLay’s decision to resign from Congress. “My own judgment is that our party will continue to succeed because we are the party of ideas.”

Ok, I coughed a little soda-pop through my nose at that.

8173 – Friday!!

I have been waiting for songbird since I first heard of iTunes. Super-duper reworking of the idea and allows open source.

May be going out with Vicki and the gang to Opa tonight to celebrate her Birthday (it was yesterday) and her new gig at the riverside. Flaming cheese, table dancers and smashed crockery!

Oh and as a public service announcement, the famous resturant across from Quiet Waters Park, Samurai Sal’s, has closed down. Who would have thought that a sushi/italian restaurant wouldn’t fly? I’m shocked. You’ll all have to go elsewhere for your sushi and pizza cravings.

Micro Retro A-Go-Go

Newish games journal Re:Retro reveals that “the world’s smallest website,” Guimp, has put up more of its adorable tiny clones of vintage arcade games, now including Pong, Pac Man, Asteroids(my personal fave), and Space Invaders.

Each game is boiled down to an 18-pixel square screen, replete with minimal-pixel graphics and clunky sound effects. It’s a concentrated dose of nostalgia as well as a design experiment gone horribly well.

FREE PANCAKES! NO STRINGS ATTACHED!

On February 28, 2006 from 7 AM to 2 PM IHOPs across the country will celebrate National Pancake Day (also known as Shrove Tuesday) by offering our guests a free short stack of pancakes*. This is going to be our biggest one day celebration in our history.

So gather your friends, family and neighbors and come to your local IHOP and enjoy a short stack of pancakes on us. All we ask is that you consider making a donation to a great charity like First Book or other local, worthy cause. Where else would you celebrate national pancake Day than IHOP? See you there.

* Limit one free short stack per guest. Valid for dine-in only, no to go orders. Not valid with any other offer, special, coupon,or discount. Valid at participating restaurants only, while supplies last.

8164 – Last day of the long weekend, taking it slow.

The birthday FP with Kev and Tomi was fun – we watched Die Hard, an episode of Lost (they’re just getting into it – it was the Kate bank-robber one), Wedding Crashers (which was better than I thought it’d be), and played some xbox: “From Russia With Love” and “Lego Star Wars” – both of which were a great load of fun, and nifty interpretations of the source material. The Bond game had especially good sound and sets, and Lego probably would have the most repeat gameplay, if I had any talent at all for the pod racing pat of the game. The pizza was good, I’d not had the Papa Johns Square pie before, and it was pretty yummo.

Got Gun as a b’day prezzie, and I look forward to playing it once big brain returns.

Bailey-pooch won “cutest in menagerie” – Kev’s got a lot of critters staying at his house right now – three dogs, four cats, two fish, his sister, her husband, their three daughters and one son, plus Tomi. Moneypenny, the runt mainecoon (2 years old and all of seven lbs) was a close second.

bailey-pooch
Bailey with the airplane ears. They naturally stick out like that at rest,
but can go to full attention if need be. She’s a little snuggle bug.

It’ll probably be the last time for Tomi in the USA, probably – his sis and her hubby are moving to New Zealand. Just an excuse for me to go to Finland then!I now have buddies in Iceland, Norway and Finland to visit now. Maybe I should invest in a few items of cold-weather gear.

8104 – system still out for repair.

GeotargetThis card is my problem with compusa, along with really poor communication or support /offering of alternatives.

In a nutshell, it’s been since November 10th that my Computer has been at the shop… everything else needing repair is fixed according to them.

Verto GeForce FX 5950 Ultra Video Card, AGP, 256MB DDR
Nvidia
Manufacturer: PNY
Mfg Part #: VCGFX595APB
Product Number: 308120
$499.88

However, that bad boy has been out of stock at the manufacturer, and at all known compusa stores in a 50-mile radius for the last 8 weeks.

With a $500 price tag, I’m obliged to wait, because I really can’t drop that chunk of change on something that I should be getting under warranty.

The guys at the shop have given me two timelines, both of which have passed, now. I’m not quite sure what I can do, save for waiting.

Meanwhile, I have to do my work on poor ol’ Battered lappie, My Toshiba satillite back from a time when Windows Me (I’ve long since replaced that with win2k pro) was “cutting edge”.

I’d say that the only time I’ve had worse customer service/ communication was with Comcast… I have since boycotted them, though I’ve heard that they might not be so bad in other areas outside of SoFla.

Not having big brain has cost me some very significant social chat and play time in 2nd Life, LAN party activities with the old FMM crowd are out of the picture… plus, all of my downloaded movies / Netflix DVD archives are ground to a halt while the machine is gone… not to mention a lack of Newtcam.

I never realised how many people watched good ol’ Newt during the day… I’ve gotten somthing like 80 emails politely requesting when he’ll be back online again. If Big Brain is down another week, I’ll hook Newtcam up to Lappie so folks can get an orange kitty fix.

I can only imagine what happens when pretty girls shut off their webcams. I suspect horny stalker-type guys aren’t nearly as polite as cat fanciers.

8006 – Tuuuuuesday the Thirteenth!

GeotargetNew Sam & Max game! I love those guys.. the TV cartoon really did them no justice.

Showing my age… I remember getting the Atari 2600 for Christmas. Combat Rocked, adventure was fun, but not nearly so much as tanks or planes duking it out. 1978 was a good year. I was 9 years old, Star Wars had come out recently, and I was still high off of living in Richmond, VA… Visiting the Smithsonian as well as other museums and and historical monuments was a regular event… maybe twice a month or so. That Atari was durable… lasted a good decade of regular use. Even at 18 I still liked to drag it out and play asteroids or moon patrol. I got into the consoles a bit, but the intellivision and colecovision didn’t do it for me. They had better graphics, but worse gameplay. By the time the first nintendo came on the scene, I was more interested in hanging out with my buddies than Mario or Luigi. Probably one of the most durable investments in a holiday present ever.. $200 in 1977… well worth the $20 a year for entertainment, not counting the extra carts. (I tended to buy an additional game every 3 months or so, plus Christmas/Birthday got to be easy for a while.) I’d guess that I had about 50 cartridges by the time I was through, and I’d estimate 47 of them were well-played and loved. (I was not fond of the E.T., Sneak’n Peak or Indiana Jones games… but they were the rare exception to the rule. Yar’s Revenge, Ms Pac-man, and Joust more than made up for them.

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

GeotargetNice relaxing day with Danny. Went to CJ’s for Lunch, hit target to do a little holiday shopping, roamed the neighborhood a bit on foot.

It seems that Dan thinks that I have a higher IQ than he does.. he sells himself a little short, I think, or maybe he’s selling me long. He confided in me that a lot of his goofiness is premeditated, although mine is generally off the cuff. Kristy the bartender much more “crushworthy” than Miranda the waitress. Miranda was nice, but seemed to be running on very low fuel cells… in need of a few red bulls.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usI told Danny about OGRE, and he was fairly enthused. Maybe I’ll pick up a copy just to keep in the games closet. I wish I still had the version for the Atari ST… I’d love to run that on my caSTaway emulator on the palmtop. Maybe a disk image of it is somewhere around. What brought it to mind is the local Zion Lutheran church looks just a bit like a Mark V. (Minus the bristling weapons, giant tractor-treads and malevolent AI, of course.)

update, an Atari st disk image of ogre can be found at #202 here, and a windows emulator here SainT I just spent about 2 hours playing Ogre, and some other classics.very spiffy emulator, even plays a sound file of the old floppy drive noise, if you want. boy, I really stink at Ogre these days… practice makes perfect! Chessmaster 2000 and the Temple of Apshai Trilogy (image 141) really brought me back to 1986, junior year in high school, wasting time in my room when I should’ve been doing homework.

It’s sort of funny to think that I was playing these video games before a few of my friends were even born. Ah, the generation gap. (Temple was released in 1980… I remember playing it on a few different systems, the first being an Atari 800)

Fracas is a great word.

I haven’t felt much desire to hang with Magda this week. Not sure why. I know my time is limited, but the drive isn’t there. Not sure if it’s a loss of interest, or some subconscious way of protecting my feelings.

This song was recorded at the bottom of a swamp while the band floated above in a glass bottomed boat. For percussion, the drummer tapped a broken microphone against the boat’s hull. To record the vocals, the singer’s head was held below the water by his band mates for the duration of the song.

I am a brother to dragons,
and a companion to owls.
My skin is black upon me,
and my bones are burned with heat.
My harp also is turned to mourning,
and my organ into the voice of them that weep.

-JOB 30:29-30

As the days go by, we face the increasing inevitability that we are alone in a godless, uninhabited, hostile and meaningless universe. Still, you’ve got to laugh, haven’t you?

7800 – leeches, leeches, leeches!

Sometimes, I feel very reclusive. I like the idea of retiring to a cave. A place with a fire, a wall to draw on, and a personal store of food by an underground spring full of fresh water. Maybe an opening at the far end where the sun can get in, but not so close that rain gets everything.

Perhaps an oceanside opening, too, and a comfortable area to curl up with the Newt-cub.

Only the sound of dripping water from distant stalactites, and maybe torches flickering, leaving a little smudge on the wall where it burns a bit too close.

If there is at least one person in your life whom you consider a close friend, and whom you would not have met without the internet, post this sentence in your journal.

Actually, I have some friends that I networked to via a net-pal, and the net-pals themselves is gone.

Age of Empires III is out and about… may be my Christmas prezzie to myself. It looks gorgeous… and I imagine the gameplay will be up to the usual high standards.

More thoughts about Wallace & Gromit… They didn’t have a bunch of science fiction fans called “the Inventive Cheese-eaters” or whatnot (though it does have it’s own fans, certainly), and I’m sure the movie will do just fine on it’s opening weekend. Fans Serenity could learn a bit from that sort of cinematic Social Darwinism… Good movies will do just fine, with or without some cult-like fan base. I really rather think the name “Browncoats” is just a smidgen too close to “Brown shirts”, too. I suspect that the Browncoats didn’t do much to get people to go see the movie.. other science fiction fans were going to check it out, because they’d already heard of it, one way or another… I figure they were preaching to the choir.

Wallace and Gromit did well, I’m sure, and it’ll surprise me if it doesn’t have better opening numbers than Serenity did.

That said, RT has W&G at – 95%… that’s a pretty fantastic rating. I know it’ll be something people will want to watch on video every Halloween with Great Pumpkin and Night of the Living Dead. I can’t say that about Nightmare before Christmas. (the closest similar popular movie I can think of)

vs. Serenity at – 81%, which is still pretty respectable, considering that most fans of the show really weren’t crazy about it… (and most non-fans that I know also didn’t dig it). I guess the Joss formula of the 80 lb super-girl is still pretty marketable. Will people want to watch it in 5 years? I imagine it’ll end up on UPN as part of the recycled Sunday sci-fi movie run, along with Ghostbusters II, because the better and more popular movies will be too expensive to syndicate. (Like Ghostbusters the first)

On a tangent – some favorite Halloween movies – Usually, I like a light opener (comedy or classic) and then actual horror after.

  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Mummy (Both the Karloff original, and the Brendan Fraser vehicle)
  • Young Frankenstein
  • Night of the Living Dead
  • Alien
  • The Shining
  • The Fly (Vincent Price)
  • The Thing (Newer one) – I like to Follow up with Big Trouble in Little China
  • Evil Dead
  • Poltergeist
  • Hocus Pocus
  • Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
  • Beetlejuice
  • The Exorcist

Just of the top of my skull.
