7800 – leeches, leeches, leeches!

Sometimes, I feel very reclusive. I like the idea of retiring to a cave. A place with a fire, a wall to draw on, and a personal store of food by an underground spring full of fresh water. Maybe an opening at the far end where the sun can get in, but not so close that rain gets everything.

Perhaps an oceanside opening, too, and a comfortable area to curl up with the Newt-cub.

Only the sound of dripping water from distant stalactites, and maybe torches flickering, leaving a little smudge on the wall where it burns a bit too close.

If there is at least one person in your life whom you consider a close friend, and whom you would not have met without the internet, post this sentence in your journal.

Actually, I have some friends that I networked to via a net-pal, and the net-pals themselves is gone.

Age of Empires III is out and about… may be my Christmas prezzie to myself. It looks gorgeous… and I imagine the gameplay will be up to the usual high standards.

More thoughts about Wallace & Gromit… They didn’t have a bunch of science fiction fans called “the Inventive Cheese-eaters” or whatnot (though it does have it’s own fans, certainly), and I’m sure the movie will do just fine on it’s opening weekend. Fans Serenity could learn a bit from that sort of cinematic Social Darwinism… Good movies will do just fine, with or without some cult-like fan base. I really rather think the name “Browncoats” is just a smidgen too close to “Brown shirts”, too. I suspect that the Browncoats didn’t do much to get people to go see the movie.. other science fiction fans were going to check it out, because they’d already heard of it, one way or another… I figure they were preaching to the choir.

Wallace and Gromit did well, I’m sure, and it’ll surprise me if it doesn’t have better opening numbers than Serenity did.

That said, RT has W&G at – 95%… that’s a pretty fantastic rating. I know it’ll be something people will want to watch on video every Halloween with Great Pumpkin and Night of the Living Dead. I can’t say that about Nightmare before Christmas. (the closest similar popular movie I can think of)

vs. Serenity at – 81%, which is still pretty respectable, considering that most fans of the show really weren’t crazy about it… (and most non-fans that I know also didn’t dig it). I guess the Joss formula of the 80 lb super-girl is still pretty marketable. Will people want to watch it in 5 years? I imagine it’ll end up on UPN as part of the recycled Sunday sci-fi movie run, along with Ghostbusters II, because the better and more popular movies will be too expensive to syndicate. (Like Ghostbusters the first)

On a tangent – some favorite Halloween movies – Usually, I like a light opener (comedy or classic) and then actual horror after.

  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Mummy (Both the Karloff original, and the Brendan Fraser vehicle)
  • Young Frankenstein
  • Night of the Living Dead
  • Alien
  • The Shining
  • The Fly (Vincent Price)
  • The Thing (Newer one) – I like to Follow up with Big Trouble in Little China
  • Evil Dead
  • Poltergeist
  • Hocus Pocus
  • Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
  • Beetlejuice
  • The Exorcist

Just of the top of my skull.

7721 – House check day!

Well second life is fun, but I guess it doesn’t support dial-up users so much. Still free to join, though for any high-speeders out there. Look up Scottobear Bergson if you’re out and about!

Checking out the Deerfield place today after work. I’m pretty enthused… as long as the walls don’t drip blood, I’m probably in.

Pass it on!!! Fake Red Cross Solicitations!
ABC news just ran a story that spoof email solicitations for donations to the Red Cross are being emailed to people all over the world. They look just like the Red Cross, right down the to secure site verify logo. If you fill your personal info into the form, which was ripped from the genuine Red Cross site, and then click on the donate button, you’ve been had; the bad guys have your credit card information. To make it worse, victims are then forwarded to the real Red Cross site, which makes it look even more genuine.

The bottom line? The Red Cross has stated categorically that they NEVER send email solicitations. Never! If you get something like described above, delete it. You may want to forward it first to the FTC’s spoof address [UCE@ftc.gov]. If the crooks are in the U.S. they can be prosecuted, and others turned into the authorities in their respective governments. Thus far spoofs have been traced to third parties in Brazil, Korea, China, and the US. Note: If you forward the emails to the authorities, please copy the addressing information (found in the Message Options in Outlook…click on View, then Message Options, then copy and paste the Internet Headers area).

Please take a moment to pass this on to people in your flist! Thanks!

You may have time to download ’em all before Halloween. I suppose I should switch to the October website colors and background soon.

The Voice of Vince – Selected OTR shows starring Vincent Price (Including classic episodes of Suspense!). There is a boatload of ’em. (Presented by The Crime in your Coffee [Not work safe])

Moment of Lyric (mp3via)

Dedicated to all the teachers that read my journal… Danny, Firpo, Kerby, The Turtle Whisperer, Pilar, Huertero, and the rest. Careful of the Johnny’s out there!

No time to transcribe, but suffice to say that Jordan’s precocious and swingin’ ode to apple-polishing one ups Van Halen in every way. “Can you take what I can shake”? Indeed!

1 year ago – Work power out, disco-hitler, Ivan, WoW, Chocolate 3-d printer, making fiends, America’s army, Giant strip-miner of dooom,

2 years ago – Meredith moves out, Frankie mooch’s wank machine, saw Ray-I, Dubai-mail, some cool links

3 years ago – Got dave into mage knight, Saw Mark Archilla, 12 dragons smells of cat pee, I got some perfect pre-dyed sheets.

4 years ago – If I were, nice night, purple monkey dishwasher

5 years ago – rant and UB-X

7639 – Thank you, Lisa2!! (Electric Boogaloo)

Lisa2, (or Weez & Sedef) sent me a lovely strawberry shortcake glitter night light (red, of course, with strawberry shaped foil bits to spin around). It’s awesome, and matches my blue glitter lava lamp perfectly. Hmm, I guess in proper sense, it would be 2(Lisa)?

It totally made my day, and I was needing a pick-me-up! In the dark, it sends off a very warm glow, compared to the cool light of the blue, too.

Thank you so much!! (Pink in honor of you both, and Strawberry Shortcake.)

I still think Holly Hobbie could totally take Miss Shortcake in a fight, but SS does have a nice scent about her.

2784 is my new score at that rotating snake game thingum. I may steal it to host in the toybox.

7525 – Sun-de-dun-dun-day

Yesterday was headache-y, but ok. Mp, Newt and I just sort of flopped around and slept off and on. There’s something to be said about curling up in a little knot and just sleeping the day away inside while the rain pounds outdoors.

Lapjuicer – “The Lapjuicer is intended to be used by a lap-dancer in a club. The performer uses their body with the object, in order to extract fruit juices that can be drunk by one or more spectators.”

Good Grief. Who comes up with these things?!? probably not safe for work.

Gerald McBoing Boing tells the story of a small boy who when he first tries to talk can only utter sound effects like ‘Boing! Boing! His parents are shocked and call in a doctor who says he has no cure for the noises.

Great classic cartoon.. I had the storybook when I was but a tiny little Scotto.

7014 – I feel like being a gold-brickin' meathead today.

Good Movie torrent site… Where else can you get Eddie Izzard Concerts, Jeremiah Johnson and House of Flying Daggers? Pretty Scotto-liscious.

I forgot how much I liked the character Pete from Brisco County. Quirky. Pam liked him, too.

I’m not sure if the full beard is better or worse than the goat. It’s different, and certainly seasonal. I may just try my hand at having my jaws fuzzed for a few weeks. There’s a bit more salt in with the pepper now.

I wonder what sort of theme music would follow me around? I’d sort of like sitar, but somehow, I suspect that I’d be pigeonholed into some lumbering brass in there. Heaven Help me if I were to get the “Otis” theme from the Superman movies. I like to think that I give off an air of calm, kindness, and intelligence, but I think about how much of the goof would override that?

Just as well that I don’t have my own theme or incidental music.

Man… Dictionaraoke still cracks me up regularly.

Danny wants to go to Otaku-Con in a month.

I’m not too big on most anime, but cons offer me a chance to hit the dealers rooms for Christmas prezzies, a chance to socialize with Dan where he’s very happy, and there’s supposed to be a bunch of cosplayers there…. which just brings out the “Dian Fossey – Research Primatologist” in me. I’m a people-watcher, and the more fringe elements always teach me something new.

I wonder if James / Mark / Renata / Etc. will be attending? I haven’t seem much of that crew in a dog’s age.

6917 – it’s 10-4, good buddy.

Keeping a positive mindset, and hoping for more good news to roll my way. Keeping my spirits high and optimism up. I’ve noticed a drop in my appetite lately… I wonder what’s causing that? Usually, I start to get munchier this time of year.Site Meter

The Eldar are a real thorn in my side. Gimme Orks any day. I’m up to mission #7, thus far. (Staying true to my 1 mission a day… it’s tempting to blow the whole day playing it.)

I want some fresh sweet corn with my meal tonight… I wonder if it’s in season?

Meeting with the women in technology board this afternoon. I hope it’s quick and painless… this week’s going to be busy… Cocktail Party on Wednesday, Kiwanis presentation Thursday. I’ll be happy when this week is over, and it’s hardly begun.

Hooray for No Hurricane this past weekend!

6915 – Linkies, linkies, who’s got the linkies?

I was right, took me about three hours, and I got a nice bonus check and an Italian lunch out afterwards.

The gang will be happy with the new machines… flat screens, better boxes, and cordless keyboard/mice for some. HP is really quite good about granted equipment, if you’re willing to dance around the paperwork.

6910 – Thor’s Day

Training went well.. a good number of concerned parents showed up, and everything rolled smoothly. Big Kahuna was a surprise visitor… must’ve come right over after getting off of the plane. The School staff was wonderfully courteous and very helpful… the media center brought back many memories as a page, cataloger and bookstore employee. I always did like the kid’s books the most.

Tech trouble seems to be simmered down now. Hopefully it’ll stay that way.

I’ve been getting into the habit of picking up a little dinner once a week or so on the way home from work at this little carribean diner over by the bus stop. I’ve become rather well-liked there, because I appreciate good food, and take a moment to talk to the folks during the slow times. Lots of Veggie, even Vegan options to eat, which surprised me, and is what keeps me coming back. Good food, lots of it, inexpensive and a friendly atmosphere. What’s not to like? There are advantages to not looking like a suit… I think folks there are a lot more comfortable talking with a “clean cut” hippie-type guy, at least at first. They make a Veggie-mango stir-fry sort of thing that is awesome, and the plantains are decadent.
