mmmmm....catnip? Nah, just a nap.

re- the current downtime –

from Brad –

New servers
Yeah, it’s slow, I know. We’ve been waiting for the new servers to arrive and they finally have. Now Dormando, Evan, and I are going to set them up and install them tonight.

Paid users will get double or triple credit for the time it was down. Paid users are also going to be getting their own database server now too, just like they already have their own webserver. In another month or two we’ll have to get the paid users another webserver but for now the 3% paid users of the active users are doing fine on 16% of the web serving hardware. It just seems like they’re not working because they’re sharing the same 3 databases with the free users. Well, tonight we should have 5 database servers, one for use only by paid users.

I’ll keep you updated, but please stop mailing me.

I hope that fixes any troubles…

queso made mention of this,

and I think brad could be looking at this, to keep them that want to be ‘crawler free’ free

The three good ones so far seem to be standards for robot exclusion, killing scrapers, spider info resource.

of course, this goes counter to what I think the web is used for, and if you publish to the net, folks will find you, sooner or later.

personally, if it’s not a private entry or friend’s only, I want to be indexed like crazy, and to be found by whoever wants to find me.

scribbles and giggles.

my latest entry into ‘s coloring game
I’m really enjoying this….
Click to see larger image, in a new window. I’m going to see if I can get more folks to play… (I’ve already managed to bring over
.. maybe I can convince a few more folks to come along? ? ? ? ? or even if you’re not an artist… (seriously… look at mine.. I just like to color!) This is also my first in a new habit of keeping embedded images smaller…(the generator style doesn’ seem to like pictures much wider than 300 pixels) and also of me putting height and width tags in same, to spare folks from evil ‘bouncy-text’ as the images fill in. Let’s see how long I remember to do it.

Friend’s list peskiness.

Here’s the thing.

Reasons for Scotto to trim his friend’s list.

1. If the person posts stuff I think will get me in trouble at work. (Nudity, porn links without warning or such)
2. Excessive foul language (seeing f-this and f-that f-the other)
3. Nothing in common, or we never talk
4. My List is too big, and I had to trim somewhere.
5. General Mean-spiritedness
6. I Never see posts in the journal anymore
7. I see 10000 one-line posts in a journal, I’ll generally remove them, because it hampers my ability to read the rest of the folks I link to.

I’ve gone past my limit of reading again, and broken my rule of ‘add one, remove two’ links. It hurts, because there are a lot of nice people out there, but I simply just cannot keep up with everybody. most of my trimming is due to reasons number 1-4.

My goal is never to hurt someones feelings, and even when I do trim my list, I’ll probably go back every now and then to peek and catch up, when I get a chance to catch a breath. I hope I don’t hurt anyone’s feelings during this process.

That being said, I’m *still* trying to trim my list further down. I don’t know what I’m a-gonna do about this.

Ack.

Same trouble as last night. Stuffed nose, gasping for air way of waking up.

Not good. If it happens again tonight, I’m going to the doctor to try in figure a way to stop it, immediately. Fatigue is beginning to set in.

Anyhow, good morning. I’ve already showered, and opened up my sinuses… but, for me, with a steamy shower comes wakefulness, not an opportunity to go immediately back to bed. (Plus, my hair’s wet. Do I sound too much like a sissy when I say I can’t sleep with wet hair? It’s not comfortable for me.)

So, I’m going to read more of my book, stroke Newt, and have an early breakfast.I wish the local Theatre around here had some movies playing at this hour, I’m sort of in the mood to see something on the big screen, although I don’t know what. Just an urge. (Not that I want to get dressed or anything.)

Dang… now it seems that when I reply to e-mail LJ messages, it doesn’t recognize my password. I can do it local, but not across the e-mail… what’s up with that?

contraception, mating habits, and so on.

from queso-

Man… some really misinformed youths out there. click on them to read some common teenage myths about contraception.

It found 85% of GPs thought young people were not using effective contraception because they were too embarrassed to ask for advice. But 70% believed ignorance was the problem, and 70% believed teenagers were worried their confidentiality would not be respected.

(And yes, overlap occurs. it’s not bad math.)

Despite the noise and annoying passengers, being a train conductor must have its moments:

Gil Murtagh’s train from Hoboken, N.J., stops at Paterson. One day recently, a pretty girl got off and ran into the arms of a young man holding flowers. From his seat, Mr. Murtagh smiled nostalgically at the lingering embrace, mood uplifted. As the train pulled out, the conductor smiled, too. “She was smooching with some guy in Hoboken also,” he said.

My first attempt to use the ‘quote class’… let’s see how it looks… not sticking out. bah! it must be restricted, or I’m doing it wrong.

In other news, another hippie couple of my aquaintance is fertile. Leisa is 2 months along now! Here’s a picture of she and me at my first phish show, way back in the day.

She's Preggers! Yay!

Times have changed since that photo… I’m down to a goatee,(and hopefully my face looks a bit thinner) she’s got a red rinse now, instead of being a blonde… and the VW van behind us is long sold. I think she’ll be a grand mommy! She’s quite the maternal type, and will be a wonderful nurturer. Her hubby, Brian will benefit from a munchkin, too… he seems the type to shoulder responsibility well. I hope they make like Dave and Cathi, and cut out the pot for the duration.

Well, thats 2 sets of Hippies… Dave and Cathi are about 4 months along now, too. They had an ultrasound recently, and as soon as the image comes back, I’ll post a link… I’m so amazed by the human life cycle, and how it works. Women have some remarkable plumbing that men don’t… (and vice versa… women’s are just more active in the cycle.) That’s part of the reason I started the … to get more perspective on such stuff. It’s been one of the more fulfilling aspects of LJ for me. Meeting wonderful people, and seeing how they think, what they know. I’m only a little jealous that there are 229 people there, and not nearly so many on my personal reader’s list. 🙂 It’s pleasing to me to know it has grown, and flourished.

mystery solved – the music is…

From Alan Taylor, re: Mystery Music.
Just wanted to say thanks to all of you who helped in trying to find the Artist & Title of my mystery song ( http://www.kokogiak.com/gedankengang/default.asp#07007200110 ).
The Mystery has been solved and I’m a pretty Happy Camper – it couldn’t have been done without all of you.
Of course, most of you are probably wondering who it is…
It was composed by David Byrne.
From the Album ‘”Music for ”The Knee Plays”’ released in 1985.
Full details and more thanks here: http://www.kokogiak.com/gedankengang/default.asp#0717200114

Thanks to folks that offered help here!

got me thinking about random journals.

I long for customized random search buttons. The random journal as it is now doesn’t do a lot for me, as my interests are usually a bit different than the average LJ-er, (according to statistics, the average LJ-er is a 16 year old girl… I’m Double that age and a male (worse, I’m a pod-person)). What I’d like to see is the user search engine return soon, so you can type in parameters. (and I’d like to add a parameter… “no foul language or l33t” text in a post. That way I could bypass the folks on a rant, or talking smack pseudo script-kiddy code. (and folks could find the same, if they wanted to read that stuff.) Heck, in the theme of Chris’s recent post, I wonder if there’s a clean way to implement a message size one, too.. “must contain at least 10 words” or whatever. I bet there is. (that’d snip out my Cap’n Kirk Joke…) Or, for example, have it cut out journals that use phrases or people you don’t like… (For example, don’t use anyone already on my friends list, or my blocked list, or anyone who uses too many ellipses (…’s, a guilty pleasure I partake in myself.)

The random feature hasn’t helped me find any journals I like to read in a long time. However, the interests list, and mutual communities are a great idea for mining for new folks. Stef’s latest idea of describing a friend and having you guess about them is another great idea.

Now has me thinking of bees that make chocolate instead of honey!

What would those hives smell like?

Does the idea of my tracking folks who read my journal scare anyone? I think it’s pretty safe, as we know who’s on a friend’s list already… but does time of viewing upset anyone? My knowing that ‘someone’s on leftyrok’s friends page right now, for example?

Should I not put this little number on my entries?

this sort of mystery is fun to solve.

Help me Solve a 20-year Audio Mystery

Somewhere back in the mid-eighties, when I was in High School, I played around with tape recorders a lot, picking up stray sounds, trying to edit them into something weird / cool / funny. One good source was the radio, and one day, while recording a show on NPR, I picked up this song (short excerpt in MP3 format here – about 800k). The tape ran out before the announcer said what the song was, or who performed it, or anything. I know nothing about this song, but over the years, it’s come to mean a lot to me.

This recording (on a cheap cassette) has survived dozens of moves, boxes, tape players and neglect for nearly 20 years. Only recently I recorded it onto my PC (so the sound quality is poor). My request to you, if any of you can help, is to help me name this song / artist / album, since I would dearly love to buy a better quality recording, and hear more music like it.

My only clues are that it sounds like something performed by Stuart Dempster (but I don’t think it is), and that it’s performed with brass instrument(s), and that the release date is pre-1986. If you can help, or to get a link to the full MP3 version of the song (6mb), please send me a note. Thanks ever so much.
