9858 – Monday in brief

Went to Verizon to get new phones, but that just didn’t happen. Too much “used car salesmanship” at that dealer- maybe we’ll go to another location. I’m due a phone upgrade. BHK, Chris and I have different approaches to the hard sell – I just don’t want to deal with them. Give me a soft soap, and no moroccan banter… just a bottom line, thanks.

Job Search is going pretty well this week already – Got a call for an interview on Friday. We’ll see how it goes!

Caught up my LJ – a little cheating, but I didn’t want to forget those items.

Writing project with Ray, Kat, Pam, Robert and others on a RPG / collaborative fiction idea. I’ll be interested in seeing where it goes.

Writer’s Block: Reading Aloud

Well – keeping it to the mortal realm ("God reading the bible" would surely destroy me – the True Voice being is too pure and too powerful to be heard by sinners, thus, instant death.)

Stepping to mortal flesh, I’d love to see the Sermon on the Mount, even though that wasn’t originally delivered (if it was ever actually performed) as Author to Reader. I don’t speak or comprehend aramaic, but to just be there at the original would be beyond amazing.

Most of the literary classics were Greek, Latin, French and German. Even Borges nifty stuff is Spanish.

Perhaps it’s best to fade to more contemporary and in my native tongue.

I’d likely go for Mark Twain, as long as I could get a beer with him while he pontificated on his choice of writing.

Biblical Side note – The highest of the Archangels (and therefore the highest of the Seraphim), the Metatron acts as the voice of God and occupies the throne next to the Divine Throne of the Almighty.

Derived from the Latin Metator, Metatron can be translated as "guide" or "measurer".

Some claim the Metatron was the prophet that was turned into an angel, taken to heaven, and given 36 pairs of wings. Some believe him to be the angel that led the Hebrews from Egypt. A few theologians call Metatron "Lesser YHWH" which stands for the most sacred and unpronounceable name of God in Hebrew (well, the YHWH part anyway). Metatron is also said to be the tallest of the angels from 13 to 18 feet depending on the source, about 2 to 3 times the height of a normal man. For reference, remember that Goliath is believed to have been about 9 feet tall.

The Metatron was thought to have many names. Yahoel, Yofiel, Surya, and Lad are just a few of his 72 other names. Some believe that he carries the Jews prayers through 900 levels of heaven to God.

It is Metatron’s task to sustain mankind (as seen in Kevin Smith’s Dogma, he interacts with the humans to prevent their demise). He has been known as the link between the human and the divine. After arriving in heaven he was transformed into a spirit of fire and equipped with 36 pairs of wings. In addition, he has countless eyes with which he sees over all the earth. He resides in the 7th heaven and, when he feels like it, appears as a pillar of fire (as the one in Exodus which handed down the ten commandments to Moses). He is the supreme angel of death. God tells him who is to die, he then tells angels below him to take care of the gruesome task.

Metatron is said to be the highest of all the angels, more so even than Michael or Gabriel. The burning bush, pillars of fire, and any other time a human thought he was talking to God, he was actually talking to Metatron (except those sort who are actually just talking to themselves – who can say?)

9209 – tuesday

Gentle day yesterday, for the most part. We had a little trouble at the ol’ Subway Sammiches joint… the sandwich-maker had a lot of communication issues. Both BHK and I couldn’t get across to him or his partner what was wrong with what they made for her. I ended up getting my sandwich, but BHK went home with nothing… made a turkey sandwich here, instead. I think she came out ahead, but so much for her not having to put something together for dinner.

13 reasons why you should not be a freelance writer .

My weaknesses are certainly in the marketing department – but the big one for me is the need for security. I really don’t want a gig that doesn’t give me a regular check as my main (or only!) source of income.

In the “News I didn’t get on time category: William F Buckley died ?

Also, how come I didn’t hear about the Hillary fib on St. Patty’s until today?

Clinton’s tale of landing at Tuzla airport “under sniper fire” and then running for cover is simply not credible. Photographs and video of the arrival ceremony, combined with contemporaneous news reports, tell a very different story. Four Pinocchios. [edit/update – she admits that she “misspoke“.]

50 things I’ve done meme- 10 to go! I…

40.’have portrayed Santa Claus many times in my life, not just when overweight, either. It started in 7th grade, Mrs. Glenning’s Class – a organization for mothers of twins asked me if I could do the job – in 7th grade, I was already about 5’9 or 5’10. Later, I did it for the children’s reading group at the library and bookstore where I worked… finally, I have been Santa for the ‘borgs twice. So.. that’s 5 times I’ve helped Kris Kringle out by being a body double. Kids tend to dig it, and I tihnk I do a pretty good job. I can let out with the HO, HO, HO’s, and most kids think it’s cool that santa is head and shoulders taller than their mom and dad… I didn’t realize that was an issue until one little boy pointed out that I was taller than his mom, voice full of awe.

41.’ have tried to be slow, in the Hoss Cartwright manner of slow…

Slow to raise a hand in anger;
Slow to judge a man.
Slow to jump to conclusions.

I have some days that are better than others. I try though, and often succeed. Once I make it to “Succeeds as much as a sane man can” I’ll be pretty happy with that.

8429 – Thursday again, yes it is.

Got some writing accomplished last night. Basic outline, some bits of dialogue. It’s not coming together in “freeflow” style I usually go for, but building on a planned skeleton seems to be working for me so far. 6 characters is a bit stereotypical so far… protagonist, romantic interest, street contact, police interface, villain and victim. I’ve got the method, but some aspects of the implementation aren’t quite on the beam. It wa skind of hard ot get rolling, but about 15 minutes in, the flow improved.

(Writing to Linda Ronstadt’s unreleased Keeping Out Of Mischief album certainly promotes noir. Got to love a good torch song from a voice like hers. Thank you, internet for obscure, but easy to download, lost vinyl!)

I would really like some of these USB Powered Air conditioned clothes in a Hawaiian print.

I would like someone to give me a big bag of money so that I can retire in comfort, without financial woes.

Barring that, I’d like someone to make a loaf of banana bread for me.

Or just to slack off and sleep in, snuggled down with Newt.

6845 – quiet, please

I’m trying to cast back the last time that I had true silence. It seems that there’s always some sort of din happening. Fingers clacking on keys and tiny fans whirring inside my computer, off in the distance. People talking in the office right next to mine. Street Traffic. Rain. The Air conditioner. Birds. Chairs and doors creaking. Wind Chimes, and a stray branch rubbing against the screen of my window. Telephones bells, and the faint buzz of picture tubes and electric lights. The clack and smack of bare feet on tile floors. The compressor of the fridge. Cat clucking at the window to the squirrels outside, or the scratching of paws at work in the litter box’s sand. Thunder in the distance.

I’m trying to recall the last time I heard the sounds of my body doing its job. The rush of blood pumping through the veins in my ears, or the slight click of tendon against muscle inside my neck as I turn my head. I can’t be sure of the last time I heard my stomach rumble, or my knuckles crack. The internal “squinch” of saliva production, right before opening my mouth wide enough to brush my teeth, and the “chooching” sounds that follow afterwards. The faint thunk of a seal formed when you close your eyes.

Maybe it’s because I’m craving a nap, or maybe it’s because there’s a good amount of noise and hubbub these days. I just want to hear the sounds of myself, and of loved ones nearby as I rest. There’s a very real comfort in the loud rumble of Newt’s purr while he lays at my throat or listening to breaths taken in a home that’s otherwise silent.

I can’t remember the last time that things were so quiet that my ears rung.

6792 – Offer not good after curfew in sectors R or Q.

Snickers with almonds is very tasty when frozen, but I preferred the chilled tangerine I also had for breakfast. Tasty morsels. I don’t use the word morsel often enough. Or Scrumdiddlyumptious. Ok, ok…I lied, dear journal…. I say scrumdiddlyumptious at least once or twice a month. Though, to make up for the “morsel” imbalance, I also hardly ever say “Oh, snap”.

The soft, spicy odor of incense, wafting in from the corridor between my bedroom and bath brings me calm on hectic days. It’s getting easier for me to realize when I’m tense lately, and once I know that I’m stressed, I can channel that attitude out to make way for more productive behavior.

When I decide to veg out…I usually sit Indian-style or other comfortable position, usually with Newt nearby. I let all the random jetsam spinning around in my mind slowly settle onto the floor of my mind for proper storage or disposal. Sometimes whole books hit the ground when the mental wind slows down, but usually it’s closer to fortune-cookie slips of paper and multi-colored index cards with quickly scrawled information on it, including “continued on card number XXX” written on the bottom. Sometimes the connected card is nearby or someplace that I can retrieve it quickly, other times, it’s probably in one of the piles off in one of the corners.

I picture my mental room as octagonal-shaped, having hardwood floors and highlights, a network of bookshelf-columns radiating out from the center, and glass walls leading up to a covered dome with a skylight on top. Secret Memories of an ancestor that was into trepanation? I don’t see any self-surgery in my future. The amount of light inside reflects my mindset, with thick drapes that could blot out an atomic blast when darkness is absolutely needed.

There are monkeys, too. Or Ghosts. Maybe Monkey Ghosts. That’s it. Probably genetically enhanced… or with some sort of mystic talisman thingie.

Storywise, sometimes I don’t see myself as a main character. It’s easy to fall in the role of support, or walk-on… no limelight, but more like Wilson on Home Improvement, though, if I was to stretch the example, I suppose that I could grab the Al role here and there. I try to be helpful and am mostly soft spoken, a little too off the beaten path to be a primary focus. I suspect that’d change if I was under the same roof with my sweetheart, rather than having us end up being the wacky neighbors.

Then again, there was the Grizzly Adams TV show. Random trivia… Ben the bear was named for Ben Franklin.

Whims got me itchin’ for doughnuts…she makes hers with prepackaged dough… I didn’t have any, but I found this little recipe.. and the bread maker!

Well, prop2 is losing a lot of her sympathy credit in the office. She called at 9am this morning (she was due in at 8) and said that the power was out, and that she was waiting to hear back from FPL as to whether or not it was an inside the house thing or something else. What she *didn’t* say was why her jobless husband was not available to do that while she got to work… She never called back to even say she’s stuck at home for some nonsense reason… FPL seldom takes more than a half hour to get on the stick… I can’t say as I remember any time short of a Hurricane that has caused interrupted service for more than an hour. Tomorrow, I visit the neurologist and hopefully get some good, progressive news to counter the lightening strike that’s going to hit at work. I still feel bad for her, and sincerely hope that she finds another gig soon, preferably better suited to her.

I’m going to be in the print issue of December’s Popular Science Magazine! (Well, the letters page.) Continue reading

COPS / nifty interfaces / Creatures.

Had a nice long gab with the Gray Pumpkin this afternoon about this, that and the other thing. Lots of fun chitty-chatting about an assortment of stuff, from gaming to kung fu to zombies to political stances. I’m amazed that I was the baby boy of the gaming group… he’s 39, Danny’s 40, Doug’s got to be in his mid-late 40s. I’m only as old as the girls of that gang. Gray and I have the most similar mental frequency of the lot, still. I’m surprised how much of those gaming times I remember, and almost as shocked how much I’d forgotten.

MIT’s Media Lab is a crucible of experimentation and innovation for students of media technology. Their work ranges from the amusingly baroque to the intriguingly clever. A couple of grad students there have developed the Audiopad, an interesting system for performing electronic music. Rather than explain further, let me just encourage you to go look at the video demonstration in either Quicktime (20MB) or Windows Media (11MB) formats. Then go read the project’s web page. I’d hate to see what’d happen if Newt got at those control-elements.

Last night was one of the more entertaining episodes of COPS… (Very little beats the one-legged cop chasing a guy down, however.)

Essentially, a haggard-looking woman with scary wrinkles flags down the cop. She’s really upset because she claims to have been robbed. After a couple of questions from the cop, the woman finally says “I just gave that woman over there $20 to buy crack cocaine, and she hasn’t given me anything!” She points across the street at another lady.

She says this right to the cop. The cop is sort of flabbergasted, and makes her repeat it. “Ok. You paid that woman $20 for crack cocaine, and she took your money and didn’t give you anything. And you want me to go over there and… All right. Ok. ”

The cop eventually shrugs and decides to follow up on it. He walks across the street, where the other woman is waiting.

The cop says, “That woman over there says she just gave you $20 to buy crack, and you didn’t give her anything.”

The second woman says “No sir, officer, I do NOT sell crack. I am a prostitute.

Also got into Animal Planet’s “The Future is Wild”, though I view it a speculative fiction rather than sound science… mainly because we don’t have a lot of the variables in place to make even something that I’d consider an educated guess about what life on Earth will be like 100 million years from now. I did rather like the tunneling birds and land-squid, however. The art and movement of the new beasties is really amazing.

Random Scotto factoid – In grade school, I hated diagramming sentences. *Hated it* Ms Mickey, the teacher at the time was as cool as could be, but when I was obliged to do that on paper… or worse, go up to the black board, I could feel the pickle-puss hang on my face. At the time, it struck me as some of the most pointless stuff I’d ever been obliged to do, and though I recognize the usefulness now, I still really don’t like doing it. I wonder if it’ll ever get telegraphed? Some little kid will ask me for help some day, I’ll see what it is, throw off a “oh, that stuff again…” and give that munchkin an irrational dislike for it, too?

Metacritic is a ratings accumulator not unlike Rotten Tomatoes (except that it covers music as well as film, videro/dvd, and games). Gigli is currently at 19, and falling, or “Overwhemiing Dislike and/or Disgust.” (0-19 is the lowest possible score range, out of 100) Right now, Rotten Tomatoes has Gigli at an average rating of 2.6/10, with only one positive review out of the 59 accrued so far. A decent movie is considered 60% or better… the current list is 2%.

Non-castaways on Gilligan’s Island Master List

I'd like to pull the book out of my mind and open it here.

Dream elements… crushing a can of black cherry soda that was still full on a hike… I dump out the sugar-water and flatten the can like a hockey-puck and slip it into my pocket for safekeeping. I’m walking through a rainforest, and there are 3-foot tall mechanical geese everywhere. They’re made of clear glass and when they sing exotic plant seeds and bulbs shoot from their mouths and burrow into whatever they land on … dirt, trees, rocks, water… One faces me, and I catch some seeds on my chest and arms… the seeds penetrate into my skin, but don’t bloom back afterwards. A huge flock of parrots flies over head and the sounds of their wings is almost deafening as they retreat from a gigantic inky-black cloud that is swirling behind them, slowly pincering in and engulfing them. The mechanical birds fly up and feed on the cloud, going from being transparent to a deep, opaque crow-black. It seems to make them heavier, as they stop flying, and instead glide slowly back to the ground, lined up in formation, no longer distributing plant life (or shooting me, either.) Rain starts falling from the now-clear sky, and the surrounding plants are growing so rapidly, it’s almost like I’m shrinking, instead. The scent of ozone fills the air, and mixes with some sort of heady, sweet smell, like honeysuckle and oranges. I notice that though a great amount of water is falling, I’m not getting wet, even though there’s no cover overhead…a drowsiness surrounds me and I wake up, pretty comfortable and refreshed.

Dang, this week just blew on by. I can hardly believe it’s Friday again.

I still feel free use the term “fairer sex”, because as a whole, I do find women to be more pleasing to the eye than men. If politically correct monkeys don’t like it, they can lump it. On looking up fair maid, I think definition two is rather comical. I may yet use that in the future.

I’m looking forward to this… Apparently it’s running trailer son Finding Nemo (when you can get there in a timely manner). The Incredibles – Pixar. Oh, you can bet I’m looking forward to it. Pixar supers! I notice that the music is like a slower version of OHMSS.

Also, Columbia Pictures has bought the rights to Marvel Comics’ most famous black superhero, Luke Cage. Ben Ramsey (THE BIG HIT) will write the adaptation of the long-running character. Luke Cage is a former gang member from Harlem that is framed by his best friend and sent to federal prison on drug charges. While in prison, Cage volunteers for a medical experiment that ultimately gives him super strength and bulletproof skin. Using the new powers, Cage escapes and becomes Luke Cage: Hero for Hire. Avi Arad will produce for Marvel Studios. I wonder who could play him well? As long as it’s not Will Smith, I’m cool. What about Iron Fist? Luke Wilson would be horrid, yet well cast, I think.

Sweet Christmas!

There’s a weakness in my heart for zombie movies…I hope 28 days later is good. I’ve heard some positive things already.

COMFORT TV OR COMFORT BOOKS?

Comfort books, unless I’m too tired to even read, but unable to get to sleep. (Which happens a lot when I’m in need of comfort.) Cartoon Network, Discovery, and History Channel work wonders.

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR FAVORITE SHIRT?

My current favorite shirt is a black white and red Tie-dyed “Pirates of the Caribbean” shirt I got from Disney world back in 2000. It’s comfy, has hippy and pirate context, and reminds me of a lovely little vacation.

DO YOU WRITE? IF SO, WHAT DO YOU OVERUSE?

I write, and probably rely too much on detail of the area rather than cutting to the point of the story. Too much scenery. (It’s the first thing I start trimming.)

BAND YOU HATE MOST?

Any that’s playing too loud outside my bedroom window. I really like all sorts of music.

PUNK IN DRUBLIC?

Nah, I don’t even drink all that much in private.

DUDE, I CAN’T *BELIEVE* PEOPLE…
Worry so much about the opinions of strangers with no apparent knowledge about what they’re talking about. I’m concerned with opinions of folks that matter to me, and professionals in the field…not Joe Blow off the street. (Even most professionals don’t matter to me, either, honestly.) The opinion of someone I know and respect however is very valuable.

FIRST BOOK I REMEMBER READING ALL BY MYSELF.
I can’t recall much of my very young childhood, but an issue of Spidey Super Stories (a kids comic cross-promoted on The Electric Company television show.) Sometime in the early 70s. Easy Reader was in it, and Spidey was fighting the Lizard, while Spidey teamed up with Easy Reader to fight the Vanisher. (Edit) In fact, after a little googling, I just found a picture. April 1975 issue (so I was about 6 years old), picked up at the grocery store. I’m sure there were books before that, but that one stands out in my mind because I bought it with my own money and made a point of reading it on my own. There was a teenage-girl named “Thumper” who likes to dress like Napoleon Bonaparte and uses a boxing glove she hides in her vest to whack people in the back of their head when they’re not looking. Her origin? “When the Thumper didn’t get a Yellow Pony for her birthday… she got very angry and turned to crime. Dressed as the great French Hero Napoleon, the Thumper looks for someone to Thump.” It was something very close to along those lines.

Hmm. You know, I hear that’s the exact same origin Mysterio originally had. Except replace the line about ‘someone to Thump’ with ‘someone to try desperately to frighten with rubber bats’.

I’ve come to a conclusion. Morgan Freeman must reprise his role as Easy Reader in the next Spidey movie.

I need to go to a comic book store and pick up a copy of this just to have again. Three Villains, Lizard, Thumper, and Vanisher. Pretty good for a kid’s comic. 35¢ well spent.

the comic in question
