8023 – My journey begins eastward, and then heads south.

GeotargetWas going to go walkies yesterday, but heavy rain poo-pooed that idea. I did get to gab with the Weezle a bit, though, and got quality nap time with the Newt between Sunday chores.

Danny’s going to Connecticut with his wife this coming Friday for a week, to visit his sis, and see his grandmother.

Geotarget1. What’s your favorite radio station?

Well, internet radio… Country fried hot rod is pretty fun.I’m also currently jamming to X-entertainment’s Christmas Mix

2. How would you describe the format?

Rockabilly,  Hillbilly, & 50’s stuff, and the othe ris Some great holiday-themed stuff. PeeWee Herman and Charo, Pogues, and more.

3. Do you think satellite radio will become commonplace, like subscribing to cable TV?

I suspect so, but it will probably have a much more limited appeal.

4. Have you thought about buying a satellite radio subscription?

Yes, but I’ve also thought about having inflatable hair that you can tie like balloon animals. That doesn’t mean I want it.

5. When is the last time you said goodbye?

To Newt this morning, before AM launch. Well, I actually said “Later, Tater,” but I meant goodbye.

8012 – My brain is full of spiders, and I’ve got garlic in my soul.

GeotargetWoo! 10 gigs of storage! Nice. Thanks, LJ!

DSL kicked in last night, so I should be able to post pictures without going to Crabby Jack’s. I’ll still visit here and there for funzies, though. Now, to get big brain up and a runnin’.

I’ve seen my first episode of Mighty boosh – Killeroo. Pretty frickin’ awesome. Thanks to Vicky bubbles3563 for putting me onto it!

LJ comments are still taking their sweet time to get to me. I think most of the old ones have made it, but some current ones are still suffering logjam, it seems.

Still no big computer or DSL… what the heck?! C’mon, folks! *whine whine* I should count my blessings.. world hunger, evil dictators and quadriplegics… and I want to play video games. Tsk, Scotto.

Showing my age… I remember getting the Atari 2600 for Christmas. Combat Rocked, adventure was fun, but not nearly so much as tanks or planes duking it out. 1978 was a good year. I was 9 years old, Star Wars had come out recently, and I was still high off of living in Richmond, VA… Visiting the Smithsonian as well as other museums and and historical monuments was a regular event… maybe twice a month or so. That Atari was durable… lasted a good decade of regular use. Even at 18 I still liked to drag it out and play asteroids or moon patrol. I got into the consoles a bit, but the intellivision and colecovision didn’t do it for me. They had better graphics, but worse gameplay. By the time the first nintendo came on the scene, I was more interested in hanging out with my buddies than Mario or Luigi. Probably one of the most durable investments in a holiday present ever.. $200 in 1977… well worth the $20 a year for entertainment, not counting the extra carts. (I tended to buy an additional game every 3 months or so, plus Christmas/Birthday got to be easy for a while.) I’d guess that I had about 50 cartridges by the time I was through, and I’d estimate 47 of them were well-played and loved. (I was not fond of the E.T., Sneak’n Peak or Indiana Jones games… but they were the rare exception to the rule. Yar’s Revenge, Ms Pac-man, and Joust more than made up for them.

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

7998 – Just another Manic Mondayyyyy…

GeotargetWent on a long walkabout yesterday… down Hillsboro to the beach, and then around to the Deerfield mall out on Powerline to see the Narnia movie and get $3.99 all you can eat buffet pizza at Cici’s. Shared a table with a Jamacian lady on “holiday” in the states – I put holiday in quotes, because she was working her vaykay in a child care center. I dug Narnia… the Christian allegory was there, but it wasn’t so heavy handed as to annoy any but folks that got offended at Tron or E.T. for the same stuff are going to bark louder over this.

That said, I quite enjoyed Narnia. The kids chosen to play were well-picked, and Edmund would make an excellent “Kid Miracleman” should someone decide to kick Alan Moore in the ribs and squeeze out the rights to make a movie. I quite enjoyed the CGI, which was smooth and believable despite what I’d heard earlier. I wonder how people that are unfamiliar with the books will do with the talking animals and other remarkable characters in the movie? Some might say it makes for a younger audience, but there are some grim parts that a little kid might not fare so well with, especially in regards to Aslan. (it is bloodless, but still strong content) I might’ve picked another person than Tilda Swinton to play the White Witch in the film, despite the fact that she did a fine job, I kept seeing the Borg Queen (even though Alice Krige is a totally different actress). The movie is as loyal to the story as I remember it (hasn’t been read for years… possibly/probably a decade or more.)

If I had a kid, I’d certainly take ’em to see it over any Harry Potter flick. I may look for the Narnia stuff as Audiobooks.. I suspect that it’ll transfer to listening-stuff better than Lord of the Rings.

Walkabout stats – 12.2 miles, burned 3034 calories. Good thing, considering that I scarfed down a pile o’pizza at Cici’s. I’m glad there isn’t one closer to work, or I’d be in diet danger.

Nose is a little sunburned from being out and about all day. Adds to the “Santa Look”.

Hm. That brings up a question.

I’d heard yesterday that 61% of folks in the USA wear corrective lenses. Can that be true? More than not?

Ah, here’s the breakdown.

7994 – Silent Serenade

Geotarget

NewScientist: Mice are rarely the source of romantic inspiration, but it now appears that male mice may serenade potential mates with melodies approaching the complexity of bird song. Mouse songs are sung at ultrasonic frequencies, which is why no one has noticed their complexity before, nor indeed been moved to celebrate the tunes in romantic poetry.

how could she resist?

Tim Holy and Zhongsheng Guo, of Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, US, recorded the vocalisations made by male mice in the presence of female pheromones. They then digitally modified them to drop the pitch by several octaves into the range of human hearing. You can listen to a male mouse producing a snatch of song, here, and a more determined croon, here.

If I had a decent cellphone, It’d make a sweet ringtone!

7993 – Singing “Newt’s pink nose” to “blood makes noise”

GeotargetBro called from New Port Richey. Apparently he’s going to live up in Tampa now…That’s a good number of hours away, if he’s actually going there. I’m pretty much all for it. He’ll be away from his “buddies”, or if he’s not, they’ll be away from my domain. He says that he’ll be down once a month to get medicine from his doc, but that sounds like bull.

GeotargetLike Barney says before he steals Fred’s Holiday Pebbles cereal… “Ho, Ho, Ho, I’m Huh, huh, hungry!”

A bowl of cinnamon life will do in a pinch. Slices of banana sound weird with cinnamon, but it’s pretty tasty. Bananas are better tossed into pancakes or monkeys, I think.

Oh, the joys of the holiday season. Dave Barry’s annual gift guide is here.

This is not your ordinary gift guide, the kind that features gifts that somebody might actually want or use. The gifts in this guide were selected because they meet a very strict criterion, which is that when we saw the item advertised, we said to ourselves: ”Are they SERIOUS?” The idea is, if you give one of these items to somebody on your list, that person will be much less likely to want to exchange gifts with you in the future.

Finally, some real humor in the Cathy comic strip. AAAHH!

7978 – I rewind about 19 years after emulation.

GeotargetNice relaxing day with Danny. Went to CJ’s for Lunch, hit target to do a little holiday shopping, roamed the neighborhood a bit on foot.

It seems that Dan thinks that I have a higher IQ than he does.. he sells himself a little short, I think, or maybe he’s selling me long. He confided in me that a lot of his goofiness is premeditated, although mine is generally off the cuff. Kristy the bartender much more “crushworthy” than Miranda the waitress. Miranda was nice, but seemed to be running on very low fuel cells… in need of a few red bulls.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usI told Danny about OGRE, and he was fairly enthused. Maybe I’ll pick up a copy just to keep in the games closet. I wish I still had the version for the Atari ST… I’d love to run that on my caSTaway emulator on the palmtop. Maybe a disk image of it is somewhere around. What brought it to mind is the local Zion Lutheran church looks just a bit like a Mark V. (Minus the bristling weapons, giant tractor-treads and malevolent AI, of course.)

update, an Atari st disk image of ogre can be found at #202 here, and a windows emulator here SainT I just spent about 2 hours playing Ogre, and some other classics.very spiffy emulator, even plays a sound file of the old floppy drive noise, if you want. boy, I really stink at Ogre these days… practice makes perfect! Chessmaster 2000 and the Temple of Apshai Trilogy (image 141) really brought me back to 1986, junior year in high school, wasting time in my room when I should’ve been doing homework.

It’s sort of funny to think that I was playing these video games before a few of my friends were even born. Ah, the generation gap. (Temple was released in 1980… I remember playing it on a few different systems, the first being an Atari 800)

Fracas is a great word.

I haven’t felt much desire to hang with Magda this week. Not sure why. I know my time is limited, but the drive isn’t there. Not sure if it’s a loss of interest, or some subconscious way of protecting my feelings.

7974 – The gift of Cake! And cute cartoons!

GeotargetI wish I were a Christmas tree
a pretty little pine
I’d wear a star upon my head
and ornaments that shine

Oh if I were a Christmas Tree
I’d dress myself with care
‘Cause if I wore bananas
I’ll get monkeys in my hair

I’d have nice presents at my feet
and tinsel to my toes
I’d be all wrapped in twinkly lights
with pine cones on my nose

I wish I were a Christmas tree
a pretty little pine
I’d wear a star upon my head

Kitty Kitty Kitty I like you!

7959 – I’ve got nothing to say but it’s O.K.

GeotargetGreedy Grateful Dead widow burns down online show-library – Archive.org has been forced to take down over 1000 soundboard recordings of the Grateful Dead by Jerry’s wife and a few (perhaps one) remaining member of the band. Ah well, it was good while it lasted.

Banana Pancakes for breakfast this morning. Yumma. I wonder if there’ll be any left over TeeGee treats at work.

Crabby Jack’s for lunch yesterday was nice. Sort of a “Hooters, but with food that’s worth eating” vibe. Cute waitresses and bartender, everyone is friendly, but not “gimme a better tip” fake-friendly. I sat at the bar, and Kristy was knowledgeable about the area and gave me some good hints on places to visit on walkabout and for eats. She’s been working there for 9 years and seems to really enjoy the place. Mojo, the other bartender has been there for 15 years, works tues-fri.

They have a Karaoke night, cheap & tasty food, wireless ‘net (how I sent palm piccies), open to 3am and has some live entertainment there, so it may be a new hangout. We’ll see, but so far, so good. Kristy advised “The Whale’s Rib” to me, and I may guide Danny or perhaps Magda that way when time becomes available.

Moment of Lyric – wma

7950 –

GeotargetMy new street number is 777, and as a result, the Pixie’s “this monkey’s gone to heaven” is echoing a bit inside my brain. Also, that was the year that Charlemagne beat the Saxons and Widukind fled to Denmark.

Speaking of Monkeys… Kong – King of Atlantis Wha?

Kong’s demise was legend, his rebirth a well guarded secret. Using DNA from the original, a new Kong was born–gigantic and primal with increased strength and ability. The new Kong is no ordinary ape–through an amazing cyber-link, Kong and his human “brother” Jason can merge into one. When an ancient prophecy starts to come true, the sunken city of Atlantis begins to rise. The evil Queen Reptilla plans to take this opportunity to trick Kong into becoming her King, using him as her slave to unite the warring clans of Atlantis for her own evil gains. In a race against time, Jason must convince Kong that Queen Reptilla is evil, in the hope that together they can save the island and its inhabitants. Join Kong as he struggles between a sense of duty to his home and friends and the allure of an amazing world, where extraordinary beasts and beings wait to honor and serve him as King of Atlantis!

Ah, that explains it.
