Nice crew here at the County – working in the courthouse annex for the last week or so has been nothing but pleasant. Broad variety of issues and concerns, from migrating systems from 2000 to XP to major server concerns. Calvert is blessed to have so many skilled employees in the tech department. There are some politics, but those follow in any place with more than 5 workers. The department as a whole seems quite cohesive, and able to run as a pack. Additionally, it’s a pleasant surprise to see it pretty balanced gender-wise. Most of the tech-rooms I’ve been in have been either heavily male-centric locker rooms, or a mostly female-type library environment. The more balanced, the better it seems to me.

Since I’m temping, I don’t have a lot of security access or the like – my primary duties are getting the phone and setting up service tickets, since I’m still not totally in the loop regarding policy and can’t change many things from my end. I have, however managed to be useful, in addition to doing the standard help desk stuff like talking people through navigation on the file server, power user stuff like outlook or excel questions, and imaging drives for new machines. I would really like to see this gig change to a more permanent position, but that may or may not be happening, depending on what the county wants or needs.

One of the people over in GIS made a comment about snatching me up, too, so there is a possibility of a paradigm shift, I suppose. Mapping software is something I have a knack at, so I figure I could be of utility there.

This gig came at a good time… my savings were getting close to the depletion point, and it’s nice to have the ability to pay the basics off every month, and even maybe recover some a bit.

I have Good Friday off, and maybe that weekend will be a good time to go with BHK to Washington , DC for the cherry blossom festival. (http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org ) I’m way overdue to donate blood, too. Maybe a trip to the Red Cross can happen then, as well. I’d prefer to give platelets, but if I can only do whole blood, that’s fine. I missed the blood drive last weekend due to my cough and my back, and it’d been nagging at me for a while.

Spring has really Sprung here… I’m used to evergreen Florida , but the shock of things coming back to life really drives the contrast here after a season of winter. There are all sorts of things flowering already – white popcorn-type trees, pink and yellows dotting here and there amongst the yellow-green of fresh shoots and leaves beginning to show. There are still a ton of bare branches out and about, but the blooms are just making things look so awake and alive.

BHK has gotten a real fascination with reality TV in recent months – America ’s top model, American idol, my sweet 16 and that pussycat club thing (I enjoy watching American idol with a group, primarily due to the social factor – I’m not as concerned about the outcome as I am the comparisons and discussion about it). My preferences are more in line with House and The Riches, though the 2nd episode wasn’t as good as the first. Dresden Files is surprisingly entertaining to me too, so far. I’m looking forward to new episodes of Venture Brothers and Hyperdrive – I’m hoping the next season of Dr. Who is better than the last. Heroes, I’m waiting to watch a season at a time, and I tried 24 again, but it wasn’t my thing. Polished off Police Squad on my PSP at lunchtime at work, so my next series in hand will be Red Dwarf and Invader Zim. (I still have the Incredibles on the memory card to fill the little Zefrank synch void left behind. I’m getting better at PSP’s Grand Theft Auto – Liberty City Stories, too.

My time on the Emergency preparedness committee hasn’t been as fruitful as I’d hoped. I fear that for it to be effective, I may have to take charge of it. I really just wanted to be on a team, but if I have to take the bull by the horns, I will. I’d like to plan out an evacuation strategy for North Beach, including how to contact as many people as possible – I’m going to try to push CodeRED notifications through for that, in addition to emails. It’ll cost the city about $5000 a year, but it’d be well worth it. I wonder how much it costs the city to put up a Stop sign, for usefulness comparison.

Newton and Pye are getting along pretty darn good these days… my only complaint is that Pye picks on Newt while he’s trying to eat or use the little box… both of which should be safe zones. Newt is still a bit hissy with Pye, too… it can be hard to tell when he’s playing and when he’s really POed.

Adam’s now on the Tennis team. From what I’ve seen, he’s a great athlete, but really needs to practice in the Tennis Department. Jimmy’s playing too, but I missed seeing his stuff. On the romance front, it seems that Adam and Kendall are going to prom together as ‘more than just friends’.

In-laws are going to Salem next week to work on the house… I wonder if BHK is going to want to visit them there at all for Easter? Tina is planning an Easter dinner with BHK and me, but that’s all I know so far on that front. I’d like to check out the dawn services just to see what North Beach ’s congregation looks like compared to Fort Lauderdale … plus, I do enjoy seeing the sun come up over the bay.

Events of the day –

I got a short term gig doing help desk for Calvert county. Not the gig I applied for, but it’ll be nice to get some clinking coin while I look for bigger gigs.

Bhk and I hit the McD’s for another round of shamrock shakes! Yum-a-lum-lum.

Almost immediately afterward, we braved the icy rain and went to outback with the in-laws and Louise.

BHK’s finest find at the thrift store was a very clean Paul Frank cap of a monkey riding a John Deere tractor – Was ostensibly for me, and then for us to share, but I think she’s loving it more than me. Pictures to follow.

Watched two new Shows last nigh t- Jeff Goldblum’s new detective bit called Raines… if the pilot is any indication, it’s a far too predictable profiler show. A pity, because I like ol’ JG’s acting stuff, usually. It seems to be too much of a one-trick pony with weakish writing.

Flip side, we also caught The Riches, which wasn’t at all what I was expecting, but I quite enjoyed it. It could’ve been terrible, but the writing and the subject matter was pretty fascinating stuff.

Our Internets are WORKING! As a reward, I pass around a link which I love, despite it being full of old hat. http://www.icanhascheezburger.com/ subtitled cute animals.

8750 – Thursday

Pretty Gentle day today – Spent time looking for work, prepped a bit for bhk’s meeting tomorrow, watched Hyperdrive. I rather dig the show, but suspect it won’t be renewed… six episodes seems like just the right amount to get all of the parody stuff out before hitting too many redundancies. (edit: I stand corrected – looks like it’ll be returning)

My Youtube account is currently shut down, due to my hosting a kids in the hall sketch and a Persephone’s bees video. If it doesn’t make it back, I’ll just stick with Google video… no copyright issues for my home movies and misc foolishness. Sort of pesky that they didn’t just take down those two, however. That spidey video was a lot of fun, and pretty active.

Dang it… I don’t get a good vibe from Obama, now. He other hand has no opinions that I can see… not sure what a platform of “I like Ronald Reagan” is for a democrat. He’s a great speaker, but I haven’t seen a lot of solid content that I like.

Please, please, don’t throw Clinton in the ring, due to her past criminal dealings and all around greasy demeanor – if anything, sh strikes me as more of a “slick willie” type than her husband. She has no charisma that I can see… the only thing that I perceive going for her is a more knee-jerk following by people who want either *any* democrat or just think that a different set of genitalia will make things better in the white house. I’m not buying.

If I have to pick, Obama will get the vote, just because he’s the devil I *don’t* know.

Again picking not the one that’s best, but picking the one that’s not as bad as the others… bleh. Ah well. Maybe I’m being optimistic, but it doesn’t seem to be as bad as the last two elections or so.

Gentle day, all told – Went out to Jerry’s for lunch, shopped for party food, got a haircut ( short, but I think it looks good. More importantly, the Mrs. Digs it.) Made it home at a decent hour, and watched TV – News Radio and Ugly betty, followed by Holy Man. a nice, relaxing evening with just Bhk and myself… quite nice.

Pretty slow going today – applied for work at a few places. The biggest excitement was loss of electrical power from 6:30ish to about 7am. Got a lot accomplished, and BHK had some solid work at the local law office today. I spent most of my time at home taking care of the usual tech / job app issues… and playing with the kitties.

Tina came over to have dinner and watch American idol with us – not a bad show, but it’s more of a social event than actually getting into the TV. I have now seen three episodes of a non-COPS reality show.

In Boot Hill there are over 400 graves. It takes
the space of 7 acres. There is an elaborate gate
but the path keeps to no main route for it tangles
like branches of a tree among the gravestones.

300 of the dead in Boot Hill died violently
200 by guns, over 50 by knives
some were pushed under trains – a popular
and overlooked form of murder in the west.
Some from brain hemorrhages resulting from bar fights
at least 10 killed in barbed wire.

In Boot Hill there are only two graves that belong to women
and they are the only known suicides in that graveyard

We go to meet Larry’s parents on Friday – spending a weekend in the Appalachians there, while Tina comes over to look after the kitties. I’m thinking that the boys may be separated for the trip… Newt in the master bedroom and Pye elsewhere, so we make sure no real fighting happens while we’re gone. The boys are rambunctious, and I doubt anything would happen, but it may be better to be safe than sorry at this early date. Tina’s going to sit them so it should be AOK. Other Possibilities are taking one kitty with us… not sure which way we’ll go just yet.

Dinner of Veggie dogs & fries tonight… took a pretty easy day today. Didn’t move any stuff – like timer says, our get up and go got up and went. Instead, we stayed home and watched Kentucky Fried Movie and a bunch of South Park episodes instead.

Gave up on Heroes and Torchwood. Heroes just didn’t wind my watch – Though I liked the basic premise and the time travel guy & mimic guy. Torchwood Lost me on the “possessed by an alien sex destroy” episode. It seemed to be more titillation, less story. It’s kind of a shame.. it could’ve been a “Hellboy” type show.

Finally saw the 2006 Xmas Who special, and I enjoyed the car chase, but I’m not too crazy about the new companion. Just a bit too bitchy for me… plus the wink/nod Rose similarities going over the other folks around. Same goes for Martha Jones.

Ever since we got the DVR, Rockford Files, Mythbusters and Black Books have been the bigger shows.

Mostly a workday today… Bhk doing law stuff, and me chewing on a lead or two. I got the qualification for unemployment in the mail today, so her work and that should help with assorted monies needed while I seek more steady gain. Tomorrow, I think we’ll start loading stuff into the brown house from the blue one. I helped Larry out at the brown place a bit – treated the water heater, pressure cleaned the deck, and put down a game plan for the roof grout & replacing the three windows that are looking like they need it.

It can be fun being a grown-up sometimes! I do regret taking down the toy train around the tree… I suspect the Xmas tree will be mulch sometime in the next three days.

Quite a busy day today… Xmas shopping and visiting with Tina and Doug were the biggest bits. Ended the day watching Grey Gardens, which was amusing at first and then sad, and then just sort of turned into a codependent mother and daughter bickering at one another in a run-down mansion filled with cats and raccoons. I don’t think I’ll be seeing the movie about them when it’s released next year.

Oh, we also went to a comic store that will probably be a new haunt for me – green alien head. Some nice folks, and a few people that are interested in purchasing my heroclix / mage knight doubles. I picked up a few things from the heroclix dollar bin for the christmas tree… wendigo, sasquatch and some others, plus bhk and I split a booster pack of horrorclix. aside from the fact that someone nicked one of the figures and closed it back up (a dire wolf), we got some goodies in there too. A Scarecrow, zombie cop, and an exorcist priest fig that a lot of fun. No Zombie Lawyer.. but maybe I can trade for one. They do gaming there, but I’m not sure if I’m wanting to hop into that scene just yet… might be worth a drop-in visit though. They do play pirates, heroclix and such… I’d like to maybe do a Champions game sometime, just for old times sake, but I suspect the group dynamic wouldn’t cut it for me.

Also found a site for LAN parties, world of warcraft and other such stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to see a place like that… I may try to bid on building them a website.. might make some coin and meet some counterstrike teammates for when big brain is reassembled.

It’s been rather difficult to shop for the Mrs as yet, given that she and I are joined at the hip (and I like that) – it makes it tricky to buy a surprise for her. I’m going to try to hitch a ride with either Tina or Larry to do some indy shopping, otherwise, it’ll have to all be done online.

Tina was amazingly generous with the wedding present, by the way. A huge collection of light green crockery a green vacuum cleaner and a wad of dough to start us on our nuptial way.

I still have to mail Danny’s Xmas prezzie – keeping things pretty inexpensive this year, due to the no-job situation. Mostly gifting folks on BHK’s side of the family. On my end, it’s just Wilt & Momster and Danny. Everyone else is getting at best a card. (not that I usually gift a lot of folks, anyhow)

I’m way behind in reading LJ. Or really writing in it. My new life is both very hectic and domestic at the moment, and I’m loving every frickin’ minute of it. Money will be tight but manageable for the next few, while I continue to pursue a gig. Just a numbers game at this point.

Got to thinking about my old superhero concept for Stigmata yesterday… then Billy Crystal / Bruno Kirby with blackhellkat… Which invited the Burger King / Burger Christ comparison via initials.

Burger Christ. What a great, blasphemous name for a fast food joint.

Many terrible biblical puns came up for foodstuffs afterward.

“The Flood” – Jumbo Drink, served with a toy ark for the kiddies.
“Pound of Flesh” burger
Gadzooks – french fries shaped like nails. (ketchup or graypumpkin‘s sacred dipping sauce on the side)
Garden of eden apple/walnut salad – you can only order it once, then you’re barred from the restaurant. bhk added the idea of a snakey crouton.

The others aren’t leaping immediately to mind.. oh! “Lot’s Wife” Salt shakers and Noah’s Animal Crackers (comes in pairs)

Just terrible.

It seems I’m not the first to think of Burger Christ.

Watched Open Season yesterday, as it got a trifle too hot at Viva Broward. (I did get my Arepa, so the journey was worth it.) The movie was *a lot* more funny than I’d thought a vehicle featuring the voices of Ashton Kutchner and Martin Lawrence could be.

I’m really glad that it’s October.

I sort of miss the days when 7-11s and grocery stores had comics on spinner racks. I think it’d be pretty keen if they at least carried annuals… did they quit doing so because of the “library factor” of kids coming in and reading and manhandling ’em but not buying, or is it that comics cost a couple of bucks now rather than 35¢?

Somehow, it seems like a comic book shouldn’t cost more than a king-sized candy bar. (Which is what, $1.25ish now, at the convenience store?)

I’ve heard rumors that Giant still carries comics, but Publix & Winn-Dixie surely don’t anymore.

Watched Identity last night. Rather a tricky twist in there, but it was pretty interestingly done… I really didn’t see it coming. The journal aspect was pretty interesting.. and I wonder about how different the theatrical release is over the extended version I watched. Intuiting who the killer wasn’t too tough after that specific plot element was revealed, due to a noticeable absence after that point. I’m not too fond of the solution, but that’s just my politics about pleading insanity. Also, I’ve never liked that jiggly-eyed actor.

Matt pointed out to me that Monsters in My Pocket are back! I’ll have to see if any are banging around the local shops. The site’s out of the uk, so I’m not sure how good my odds are – the “Where to buy” section on the website says “coming soon”, but in Australia, it mentions k-mart and toys r us. Sort of like hero/horror clix without the fun bases. (warning, page is slow loading, and has sound)

I rather dig the monkey man (listed under maniacs)

Sounds like bhk and Tina had a great time in Quebec! I’m looking forward to pictures of mounties and beavers and moose and French street signs (“Rue d’ escargot” or whatnot) and the gals just havin’ fun.

When he gets home, Mrs. Cat has a surprise for him.

My sweetie’s on a road trip with her buddy this weekend… I keep forgetting how small the northeast is compared to Florida… driving from DC to NJ to VT is doable quick as a wink, compared to just going from Miami to Tallahassee. It sounds like they’re having a grand time – I look forward to the pictures they bring back.

I’m impressed at how well the last season of JLU was done… That’s how a show should end… strong and solid, not wheezing out the last dregs of its life. Good job on the Hawkman edge and Legion of Doom stuff.
