8585 – Midweek!

Note to self – doodle a green couch in the woods.

Newton *really* likes the smell of Twizzlers rainbow twists.

All caught up on House, now, psp tv duty is Justice League and Arrested Development. (Thanks, Podtropolis!) – useful for folks with iPods or other portable video gizmos.

If I don’t have your snail-mail address (or, even if you think I do) please email it to me. (to scottobear@gmail.com is fine ) I’m getting warmed up for a snail-mail session.

Film Threat has a 24-minute promo version of the 1997 Justice League of America pilot available for download.

Not too keen on most the recent venture brothers. Scooby parody wasn’t my fave, though Brock’s “tapestry of quiet desperation” was ok, I guess. “We Shut your third GD eye for a reason!”

From Mick Foley:

America,

I’m not a pedophile. I’m pro-wrestler. You’re thinking of Mark Foley. Please stop sending me nasty emails. I don’t even have AIM. Thank you for understanding.

P.s. Don’t read into the Dude Love thing. It’s just a nickname, I swear.

8575 – 2 nights and 28 days to go!

First Episode of Legion of Super Heroes wasn’t too bad. Not sure how I feel about the “greatest american hero – needs training” superman. I think it’s probably ok as a kid hero thing.

Nice cameo of skeets, Booster gold and a lot of Green Lantern Races at the museum, they did a pretty sharp update.

Contrast that with “Heroes”… my jury’s still out on that one. It has potential, but needs a little more oomph, I think.

The C in CW stands for CBS and the W stands for WB – Columbia Warner? (CBS&WB) – something weird about an abbreviation of 2 abbreviations.

So, is the actor playing Luke leaving Gilmore Girls, or are they just getting really uppity with the writing?

How to crack a walnut with one hand:

  • First, place two hard-shelled walnuts in the palm of your hand.
  • Carefully line up the seams, and wrap your fingers around them.
  • With your hand slightly cupped, get a good grip – One walnut should rested against the base of the thumb, while the other one presses against the curved second and third fingers.
  • Squeeze *HARD* until the weaker one of the two walnuts gives in to the pressure.

That move *really* impresses folks… I once got a “Woo!” from John, the first time I showed it to him.

Good during the winter holidays, when there are walnuts all over the place.

I’m a little envious of folks that are in a place (MD) where they can see their breath… I’ll get to do that this weekend- airports have reduced restrictions on liquids again, which means that I can bring a drink aboard. Non-stop flights this time, so no layovers! Most Excellent!

I’m looking forward to late October walkabouts and after. Basic thoughts include the Keys, Vizcaya, and maybe assorted South Florida locales.

Citgo is owned by Venezuela, eh?

Here’s a hidden program in Windows Xp, it is a very useful graphics tool for designing your own fonts, logos and icons.

To start the program go to Run in the Start Menu then type eudcedit and click OK.

It will then open the program, and you just select a hexadecimal code for your first character from the grid to start then click OK and you are now ready to begin designing. Using the set of drawing tools on the left you can do your own design. When you have finished you can save your character, either in a particular font, or all fonts. via

I just downloaded Night of the Living Dead down to my PSP. you can d/l it or watch it directly on archive.org or google video. It’s one of my all-time fave scary movies.

Happiness is Roddy MacDowell with silly string on most recent Columbo. I honestly don’t know if I prefer him in protagonist or antagonist roles. It did really put the focus on the dangers of smoking and “modern answering machines”, if nothing else. It seems that Columbo went from drinking bourbon on the job in ’68 to passing on booze entirely in ’72. I wonder if the Mrs. turned him around?

8568 – Thursday, already?

Chipped my bottom right rear molar last night – Looks like I’ll need a crown back there. Swinging by the local dentist as soon as I can switch the phones over to the office and the doc’s place opens up. I hope any fix is simple, painless, and inexpensive. Fortunately, I have no dental pain at the moment.

Hey, my episode of Columbo last night (Murder by the Book) was directed by Stephen Spielberg. The story was weakish, but it was visually pleasing and I liked the characters. I think that I preferred the Second episode, Death Lends a Hand more. Robert Culp is pretty keen in any role.

Netflix seems to have to stretch a bit lately to send me my goodies –

Moment of Lyric – Thanks jpse! Here’s the Mando Mafia version of Jojo the Cannibal Kid. They also do a keen version of All Along the Watchtower. (both are on the Get Up In The Cool album)

Feel free to compare to the original Lyrics posted there.

I’m not too fond of Chase’s character on House.

I’ve been working pretty hard lately… a lot of things on my plate. Work’s asking for a lot of things at once… I’m hoping it’s because folks are going away for a week, not because they expect it all done tomorrow. Updating three websites (designing two of them) editorial content on about a dozen or so pages and a lot of hardware fiddling.

Something’s on the wind about new hires at the office. Upgrades or replacements? Who can say? Scuttlebutt is that RS may be coming back full-time, too… I thought it’d take hammer and tongs to accomplish that. If it’s additional bodies, we’re going to need more room.

Dear Lazyweb – Getting close to donation-time again, and I’m considering heifer.org againGeotarget

To Whom it may concern:

If you had $200 to donate to a charitable organization, who would you give it to, and why?

I’m always on the lookout for good, solid charities… ones that do good works with a minimum of skimming by executives off of the top. Any suggestions?

Found this on Forbes – America’s Most (And Least) Efficient Charities

8536 – An object at rest cannot be stopped!

Netflix blessed me with the first season of The Tick. Good Background stuff to play while getting other bits and pieces in order. It seems a bit more simple and primitave than I remember, but still entertaining. The first Season is surely the best one, in my opinion.

“Pajama police” is a great wise guy name for costumed supers.

Getting together with Danny today, probably for just a gabfest and some sushi. Possibly Zoom? It’s gotten pretty bad reviews. We’ll probably grab another day this weekend, too… take advantage of the Labor Day weekend. Maybe some putt-putt with Tina and Co. too, if it’s still on. Walkabout would be nice, too – time, weather and health permitting.

At night projections from moving cars are shone on the buildings downtown. Each car projects a video of a wild animal. The animal’s movements are programmed to correspond to the speed of the car: as the car moves, the animal runs along it speeding up and slowing down with the car, as the car stops, the animal stops also. The framerate of the movie corresponds to the speed of the wheel rotation, picked up by a sensor. If the presence of a moving object (such as another car or pedestrian) is detected with proximity sensors, its animal “avatar” appears in the projection.

8507 – Thursday? I thought it was Friday.

Very Keen Clock.

I caught an internal monologue going, and realized I’d been ignoring it… or more likely, I had a few going and one that was going stopped to listen to another that was sort of mumbling in the corner of my mind. I’m not usually one for multitasking, but I can think abstractly about a few different things concurrently, though rarely do the less “vocal” ones get permission from the blowhards out in front.

What were those streams of thought saying?

Loud was talking about a system design that I was engrossed in. Quiet was drawing outlines of mind-shapes to broadcast elsewhere, which will solidify in time.

Of course, there are a few others streaming in the background, pretty easily heard, and acting as a sort of bass line for the others, keeping the beat, and setting the tone with a vibration, or a pace… the E string on the electric guitar. I like the current rhythm.

I’ve been lax in writing again. I’ve got a free hour on my transit every day… mornings can be difficult, but the way home is reasonable. I really have to devote an hour a day, or I lose discipline.

Don’t call my eyes “visual receptors”. “Eyes” works just fine. Keep it simple.

Cripes! Is July nearly over already? Whahoppen? Weeks are screaming past at a breakneck pace.

You Are Best Described By…

Impression, Sunrise
By Claude Monet

Danny didn’t like 12 Monkeys nearly as much as I do. Yesterday was calm and gentle, and I’m all for that. We discussed a question posed about usefulness of high school algebra by most people in either the workplace or at home. I’ll pass it along here, just as an informal quiz, once he gives me the exact wording. Quite honestly, I don’t really need either much, if any of the math I learned after about 7th grade or so.. or probably earlier… I do rations, percents, and arithmetic a lot, of course, but I can’t remember the last time I had to solve for X or cut something on a proper angle.

I do, however use critical thinking skills all the time, which I think I may have picked up as a side effect of geometry/algebra/calc. If I had it to learn all over again, I would have preferred to learn those skills without some of the more esoteric greek math.

In other news, we had sushi – I had spicy tofu, some tempura sweet potato, and a veggie roll – Danny shared the tofu, and went with his usual Scandinavian-style sushi with orange fishy-eggy-type stuff. It was very pretty for being made of reproductive fish bits.

After Sushi, we went for some walkies around the cove, and discovered a few pretty tasty-looking restaurants for next time. Not a bad mix – Brazilian, French, a Dive bar, and a final place to stop and sum up the night with ice cream. We had a few scoops, and headed back home.

When I got home, I found a lot of goodies waiting for me… 2 Kids in the hall dvds, the final Zim, and best of all, my lovely Yoga package from bhk! In there was a spiffy dvd in 3 parts… AM, PM, and Relaxation. Also in the package was an awesome blue yoga mat, and swell letter to newt and m’self, and a delightful postcard, to boot. Thank you! I plan on doing the nightly on every evening, and the morning stuff on days I don’t get up before dawn. The relaxation, I’ll shoot for midday on the weekends before walkabout.

8483 – YOU BLEW IT UP!

Sort of lame that Lance Bass is pulling the ‘Ellen’ card right before he’s starting a new show.

It’d be cool if his new TV program is about how he caught “The Gay” during his Russian Space Shot, and returned to a planet populated by talking apes. I’d watch it.

For three episodes anyway, until it turned into Will & Grace, with Ape-o-Nauts.

Even Space Monkeys can’t save Will & Grace.

Sorry, Monkey.

8475 –

Pretty spiffy Zim and Kane Action this weekend. Il Postino was surprisingly good, too. (Saturday was spent watching Carnivale and writing. Drastic revisions to the detective story…I suspect I may be over-editing.

Cleansing chalk is better when it doesn’t have bacon in it. Space-time object replacement device is ready, too.

I didn’t venture any further than 25 steps from the HQ all weekend, and that’s really just fine by me. Only objectives left for today and depositing checks from doing tech support and click-through. As the top of August approaches, I’m wondering if it’ll get donated to heifer.org, or if there’s another good “help teach a man to fish” sort of orgs out there.

I thought I’d be missing my dad more than I did yesterday… but I did fine. Thought about him quite a bit, but didn’t get overly misty. I trundled to the beach, and then the Mango Festival for a bit of lunch – it was a pretty soggy Sunday, so I bailed early on the Mango Festival, but I benefited from some lovely chit-chat with BHK instead.

Dan and I will likely hit the movies after work today, barring anything unforseen. I wonder if I’ll be able to keep awake throughout? Monday is usually fairly taxing due to morning meetnigs and midday catch-up.

Close your eyes and look at me
I’ll be standing by your side
In between the deep blue sea
And the sheltering sky
If we find no words to say
To the rhythm of the waves
Then we’ll both surrender there
Walking on air

And the worries of the day lie down
Under cover of the fading clouds
The secrets of the night
Come alive in your eyes

You don’t have to try
Cause you don’t have a care
You’re walking on air

ECN hooked me up with a side-gig for a website for her boss. That might make for a nice couple of hundred bucks in the next week or two – probably for about 2 or 3 days worth of work over the weekends in my downtime. I can cope with that. I’ve had quite a dry spell in that department since the grove shut down.

Looking forward to doing a little writing this weekend, too. I’m long out of practice, and I’m due to get back on the wagon again. I’ve been fooling with a new mystery-type idea, so I’ll see how well I can work that up into a few thousand words, give or take.

Set up Newtcam on Big Brain…That should eliminate all the random hang-ups lappie-cam was causing. If all goes well, I may experiment with streaming video again soon. As it is, I’m testing out an “autozoom” feature of the newest version of Where’s James webcam… we’ll see how it looks.
