How it Works:
Interdimensional Access: Nuclear testing in the 1950s thinned the barrier between our Earth and Kaiju Earth (KE), creating portals that kaiju are drawn to due to their internal nuclear reactors.
Mission: The KPS’s dual mission is to:
Protect Kaiju: Help endangered kaiju species survive and thrive in their own world, often by delivering pheromones for mating or relocating them.
Protect Humanity: Prevent kaiju from entering our world and stop nefarious humans (like evil capitalists) from exploiting KE.
Operations: KPS operates secret bases (like Tanaka Base) in locations on KE corresponding to places on Earth (e.g., Labrador).
Staff: The organization recruits diverse personnel, including scientists and “porters” like Jamie, who handle logistics and care for the creatures.
Kaiju Biology: Kaiju are massive, nuclear-powered creatures, and when they die, their reactors often explode, creating new, fertile (but dangerous) nesting sites, which KPS monitors.
In essence, the KPS functions as an interstellar wildlife conservation group, dealing with nuclear-powered megafauna on an alternate Earth, all while keeping the whole operation under wraps from the general public.
Scalzi’s Overall Argument (Through Characters)
Individual heroics are overrated
Ethical systems matter more than charismatic leaders
Conservation is an act of restraint, not domination
The real conflict is use vs. stewardship
“You don’t save the world by being special. You save it by not being awful, together, over and over.”
