Day 20,606

Please have a safe and sane Fourth of July.

Remember, it’s about the pursuit of liberty and self-governance, marking the beginning of the American Revolution and the birth of a new nation.

No kings. No despots.

Let’s keep it that way now and forever. Keep fighting the good fight, however you can.

Every Republican who “had to speak out” about the catastrophe of the massive fugly as hell bill and then voted for it anyway. You chose your political life over people’s actual lives. There is a special place in Hell reserved for you.

I’m not fond of how every fan-favorite old film now gets an obligatory “It couldn’t be made today!” tag, as if it’s some Gnostic text and not “a product of its zeitgeist and industry conditions, which happen to evolve over time.”

My headcanon is that Columbo is a ghost drawn to recent murders. He’s always talking about a wife we never see, wears the same clothes every day, doesn’t seem to have any professional colleagues, and is in a perpetual state of confusion.

Dandelions

A handful of centuries ago, dandelions were brought to my country as an easy food crop.

Now, ousting them from lawns is a hundred billion dollar industry.

Perhaps we distrust abundance, what is free and at hand.

Stubborn and wild.

I suspect dandelion didn’t change.

We did.

Dandelions are native to Eurasia, likely evolving around 30 million years ago. They were introduced to North America by European settlers, primarily for their medicinal and food properties. While considered a weed in many areas, they are a globally widespread plant with a long history of human use.

“I canceled Obama’s nuclear inspection program, then I bombed Iran. Now, I am offering them pallets of $30 billion in cash, plus another $6 billion, if they agree to negotiate Obama’s plan. It’s called the Art of the Deal.”

Reminder: many of us are TEMPORARILY able-bodied. You’re one diagnosis or accident away from a completely different reality. Just because you don’t rely on Medicaid right now doesn’t mean you won’t in the future.
