9410 – Monday

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BHK!!

Allison’s B’day! I buttered her nose while she was distracted by playing audiosurf. (Got it for $5 this last weekend.) I was a little disappointed that my mp3 of Christopher Walken reciting Poe’s “The Raven” was so linear.

As a gift / party-favor to all for BHK’s day – A GAZILLION Free to print and play games.

Oh BGG, how I thank the Internets you’re there.

If you’re not into free games, (or even if you are, dear journal) here’s a stop-motion zombie movie called Chainsaw Maid. Best zombie film this year. (from the same people who did Bloody Date )

No Lebanese Taverna Tonight – Falafel time must wait – instead we hit Gallo’s Deli – food is still pretty good. Not as superior as Selby, but only a block or two from the house. BHK opened the remainder for her loot tonight.

I got her an assortment of little trinket-treats – My faves were earring-studs in the style of mexican sugar skulls and a bottlecap pin with a pirate inside saying ARG in letter beads…. but I’m partial to things skully. I need to take a picture of BHK’s loot pile – other items were a lovey charm, a ouija board pin, and a horde of coupons to do / get things, from getting me in a good mood to a movie night with no snarky comments. (2 nights, if neither are Jane Austen-related).

Furthermore he loses his will and is completely under the control of another. On returning to himself he remembers nothing of what he has done. –Excelsior Cottager, August 25, 1888.

9409 – Sunday

Two years ago today I arrived in Maryland and was picked up at the airport by BHK. Pretty much a life-changing experience for me. Now, we’ve been married, I’ve been up here at the same gig for over a year, and most of the dust has settled in our home.

Despite a few stresses, I love it here, and would never want to be far from BHK’s side. Newton and Pye are pretty great pals, with no real signs of antagonism between them. Work has its difficult moments, but for the most part, it’s a very good gig. I can honestly say that BHK has been nothing but wonderful, supportive and loving the entire time.

At the moment, we’re browsing the idea of looking at houses… we may or may not stick with the one we’re in now. The possibilities are improvement, knock this one down and rebuild from the ground up, or hit a third location. All options seem equal right now.

BHK brings me so much joy and happiness… even when I’m feeling low or hurt, she pulls me up and keeps me going. The marriage proposal and response was certainly the best thing to happen in my life for a long, long time. I feel happy knowing that I’ll be spending the rest of my life with her, through thick and thin.

I am thankful to Allison for making my world a better place. Everything that I perceive is a bit more wonderful because of her presence.

Today, we got up a bit later – in-laws came over to hang out. Chris and BHK went through BHK’s jewelry box… she’s got a lot of funky stuff in there, all of which is pretty dang keen. BHK did her best to keep her mother from acting the magpie and stealing sparkles, but it looks like a few items have floated back over to the mama-nest. We’ll have to swing over there in a month to liberate some of them back. Meanwhile, Larry and I sat in the office area, and talked about his life on the farm, dogs, cats, hunting and so on. It was a nice bit of gab from Larry, who is normally very quiet… he everyone else first dibs on the conversation, usually.

We were going to do Korean BBQ for lunch, but that got ruled out in favor of another trip to the Selby Sub Shoppe. BHK and larry split a half pepperoni/half meatball pizza, Chris got a big ol’ burger, and I got a black bean burger sub… it was all delicious, as usual.

We took the scenic route back, and picked out bits of ragweed, marsh mallow, and assorted sea grasses while taking in all the houses out back between Annapolis and home – some are really magnificent.

First few games on audiosurf – a fun little game that uses your music (or streaming audio) to build a racecourse to place klax-dr mario sort of brick building. Website explains it better, or the wiki here – it was on sale for $5 today, so we snagged it after playing the demo.

An AP story about the thousands of voting machines gathering dust in warehouses across the country after states such as California, Ohio, and Florida have banned their use. Many of these machines cost $3.5K to $5K each. Local election boards are struggling to find ways to recover any of the cost of the machines, or even to recycle them. The picture in Ohio is the most confusing, as multiple court cases limit the state’s options and result in a situation in which the discredited machines will nevertheless be used in the presidential election coming up in November. The state’s new (Democratic) attorney general has just issued a rule banning the practice of election workers taking the machines home with them the night before elections.

9408 – saturday

Beautiful day out this morning – we went for a nice 8am constitutional to check out the bay fest pre-opening. Lots of seagulls on the beach waiting in advance for folks dropping bits of funnel cake and corn dog, no doubt!

It got pretty hot by the time we got back – I left in a fairly creaky condition, but was ok, but tired once we arrived home. BHK and I lounged for an hour or two, and then I got a message that boiled down to my going into work on Monday. Too many issues with the project – can’t in good conscience take the day off, under the circumstances. I think that I was more disappointed about not getting BHK’s birthday off to treat her more than she.

After wrestling with that for a bit, we headed back to bay fest for some junk food, people-watching and a bit more exercise. While at the Bayfest I saw Kathy Bauer! I worked with her at Calvert county a little over a year ago, and she recognized me immediately. That crew was the kindest and most fun group of people I’ve ever worked with… a shame that it just wasn’t affordable to work there. We didn’t stay long, but got a couple of veggie egg rolls and some limeade and orangeade which really hit the spot. Between the ‘fest and home, we took another A/c break at Coffee, Tea and Whimsey and ended up purchasing a bottle of wine for the evening’s birthday celebration, some awesome horseradish/garlic dip, some goofy rubber monster key-toppers, and a keen Buddha eye-glasses holder for BHK’s nightstand. Pictures of those… and the ‘fest to follow.

More resting and just goofing around until six came… bhk and I were watching primeval and just soaking up some snooze-vibes with the kitties. I waited for BHK to hit deeper sleep, and went to sneak off to do some wrapping, but it wasn’t stealthy enough – but she relented to nap while I wrapped.

We went to the in-laws for dinner – BHK got her desired Chik-fil-a strips and nuggets, and Chris made her a cake, too. She managed not to be buttered, but Larry psyched her out a few times. Aside from the tasty dinner (I had eggplant, zucchini, and the best corn on the cob of the summer), a little room was saved for the cake.. it was a reduced sugar yellow with chocolate icing… pretty yummy!

Loot BHK got was – card 1 from me – made her cry, but they were happy tears, cards from her grandparents on Larry’s side – in-laws gave her a cat encyclopedia, a ruby and diamond heart necklace w/matching earring-studs, and $100 toward a sewing machine…. very, very generous and appreciated!

The cake – pre-ignition. Don’t worry – BHK will be butter-nosed, yet, dear journal!

Day ended with us lounging at the in-laws living room – Hallmark channel vs the Rock.

Over at Gamasutra, Steve Fulton has published a massive 23,000-word history of Atari from 1978 to 1981, encompassing ‘… some of the most exciting developments the company ever saw in its history: the rise of the 2600, the development of some of the company’s most enduringly popular games (Centipede, Asteroids) and the development and release of its first home computing platforms.’ Best quote in there for Slashdot readers, perhaps: ‘Atari had contracted with a young programmer named Bill Gates to modify a BASIC compiler that he had for another system to be used on the 800. After that project stalled for over a year Al was called upon to replace him with another developer. So … Al is the only person I know ever to have fired Bill Gates.

9407 – Friday

Hell of a long day at work, but BHK and I started to make her Birthday weekend roll with dinner out at Saigon Palace for dinner. We’d never been there before, so it was a bit of an adventure… Our traveler’s luck served us well this time:

0822082136.jpg. 0822082057.jpg

The place was pretty empty for a Friday night… food was delicious and our servers very attentive and friendly. I’ll happily go back there again and again – lots of veggie goodies to try, and the Pho will be super come colder months ahead. (I got the bird’s nest, bhk got the lemon tofu. I think she won, but mine was mighty tasty, too!)

Hopefully this puts us on a solid roll toward Birthday goodness!

Ray Bradbury is 88! Happy birthday, one time great writer, now crotchety old guy! Dandelion Wine is still my one of my all-time faves. Thanks for that… I wouldn’t have a lime-vanilla ice, otherwise.

In an online survey, 42 percent of Internet users admitted to logging into other people’s email and social networking accounts without their knowledge. The poll doesn’t ask if passwords were found, granted, or stolen — which would make for further interesting results. The write-up summarizing the results defines the respondents as part of an “educated tech-readership” and questions the ethics of logging onto someone else’s account, and whether those differ depending on the person and relationship.”

Magpies can recognize themselves in a mirror, confounding the notion that self-awareness is the exclusive preserve of humans and a few higher mammals. It had been thought only four species of apes, bottlenose dolphins, and Asian elephants shared the human ability to recognize their own bodies in a mirror. But German scientists reported on Tuesday that magpies, a species with a brain structure very different from mammals, could also identify themselves. It had been thought that the neocortex brain area found in mammals was crucial to self-recognition. Yet birds, which last shared a common ancestor with mammals 300 million years ago, don’t have a neocortex, suggesting that higher cognitive skills can develop in other ways.

Wednesday Night – Veggie Protein-spheres (rather than meatballs) in sauce, homemade pickles, naan bread – made for a tasty sammich with sweet potato fries on the side. Roger Ebert is not a fan of 3-D movies.

Ask yourself this question: Have you ever watched a 2-D movie and wished it were in 3-D? Remember that boulder rolling behind Indiana Jones in “Raiders of the Lost Ark?” Better in 3-D? No, it would have been worse. Would have been a tragedy. The 3-D process is like a zombie, a vampire, or a 17-year cicada: seemingly dead, but crawling out alive after a lapse of years. We need a wooden stake.

Oh… BHK is going to disagree there!

Quotes – It’s a long one from Bill Hicks –

You’ve been fantastic and I hope you enjoyed it. There is a point, is there a point to all of this? Let’s find a point. Is there a point to my act? I would say there is.

I have to.

The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it’s real because that’s how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly colored and it’s very loud and it’s fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, “hey – don’t worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride…”

And we… kill those people.

Ha ha

“Shut him up.”

“We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real.”

Just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn’t matter because: It’s just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defences each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

Reasons to Smile – Lots of ’em… Family, friends, a clever psaage in a book, soap bubbles, winning a video game, smelling baking bread or fesh cut grass, thinknig of something new or in a different way…. too many to list.

Season of Choice – Autumn, especially with color changes, cool weather and harvest time.

Tag Seven Peeps – no can do, buckaroo. Just let me know if you run with it, whoever does take it.

Unknown Fact About Me – Hard, with a decade of journals online… I’d say that most folks don’t know that I was a very quiet kid in high school – more stand-back than joining the crowd, save for a very small group of friends.

Vegetable – I do like the broccoli, but corn is mighty.

Worst Habit – I’m a bit of a clutter-bug, and often fail to pick up after myself. I’m trying to be better about it, though.

X-ray or Ultrasound – MRI.. but of those two, Ultrasound.

Your Favorite Food – Variable. I’m craving sushi right now, but I really like Thai / Italian / Mexican dishes across the board. BHK is an awesome [edited to add:[ COOK! COOK, I SAY! CHEF, EVEN!]

Another *busybusy* day at work, but eased when I got home – BHK made supper of the remainder of the sloppy joe mix became taco salad fodder, with a side of veggie taquitos. Good stuff… BHK and I watched the Vampire Ventriloquist’s Dummy episode of Middleman – the show continues to shine. Venture brother’s first half was pretty spiffy, too.

Other things that brought cheer – seeing these kitty pictures in the archive… both were taken at the same time – both kitties sucking up as much sunlight as they could hold. Newt was totally whited out, and pye looks very comfy on the purple couch.

The nice folks at NPR have done us all a favor and taken some used Kinoki foot pads to be tested to see if they’d drawn anything out of a guinea pig reporter’s body. Guess what? They didn’t.

Reporter Sarah Varney bought some Kinoki foot pads and wore them to bed. She also subjected her husband to the (alleged) detox treatment. In the morning, they both awoke to the stinky brown mess that the advertisement had promised. Not convinced that the brown stuff had actually come from their bodies, our hero took the foot pads to a lab and had them analyzed and compared with unused pads.

“Compared to the blank that’s almost identical,” said the scientists. “It looks like three of the same sample, basically.”

A doctor from UC Berkeley confirms the scam diagnoses. Your body already eliminates “metabolic waste” and “toxins” through, um, other means…

“For many hundreds of thousands of years we’ve been successfully eliminating them through the usual means, which is urine and feces, and there has been no demonstrated need to accelerate that.”

So what is all that gunk in the pad? We’re not really sure, but it shows up if you hold the pad over a pot of boiling water. Who knew distilled water had “metabolic waste”?

Every now and then, you may find yourself wondering: how many atoms of Jesus do you eat everyday?

In the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation, the eucharist actually becomes the blood and body of Jesus Christ. […] Transubstantiation means that eventually the earth’s entire biomass will be made out of Jesus.

Eventually = 4.91 billion years.

Sunday – 9400

Larry’s Birthday – He made pancakes for us all… Tigger nearly escaped the house, and is now no longer allowed on the porch.. purely an indoor kitty.

BHK made a lemon cake, an we gave him a lemon meringue pie and tickets to the bluegrass festival. (and the first three lethal weapon movies on dvd)

Adam brought a keen gift of fridge and microwave combo for his workshop… and stocked it with 5 cases of soda and water.

After the get-together, BHK and I headed home to get some rest… I think we fell asleep on the couch within moments of landing there. We were awakened by neighbor Daniel (10) at the door, wanting to visit and gab because he was bored. We talked a lot about social topics a 10 year old might have, like school, movies etc. – Buckaroo Banzai was on, mute dint the background, and was an interesting juxtaposition of listening to the little guy gab.

He eventually went home, and we had sloppy joes and garlic fries for supper – super yummy.

Danny and Mom phoned… or I phoned them, I forget which. I think I called Danny, the momster called me. Just general catching up, both are doing ok.

Autumn is coming… that’s when BHK gets her pumpkin eyes.

Saturday – 9399

Yesterday’s Anniversary supper went well – Today after my shots, BHK and I pretty much hung out around the house and chilled out. I installed the new ram into my system, and it chugs nicely thus far.

Once it got cool enough outside, we went for a long walk – from out house down to the bay, along the boardwalk… and then we stumbled over the in-law’s BMG… so we gave ’em a ring to ask where they were. There was a classic car show at the “Worstlawn” Inn. Thankfully, the in-laws have the same opinion of the place as BHK and I do… so we went to Thursday’s for dinner up the road. We parted company – BHK and I walked back to our place and the in-laws tooled off home.

A few pictures from the day – They can’t capture how stunning a pink moon over the blue bay can be.

[I’ll insert flickr pics here- after they’re uploaded, and link back from a future entry.]

Some very interesting research out of the University of Washington that employs a method of using high quality photographs to enhance a video taken of the same subject. The project page gives a good overview of what they are doing and the video on the page gives some really nice examples of how their technology works. Hopefully someone can take the technology and run with it, but one thing’s for sure: this could make amateur video-making look even better than it does now.” And if adding mustaches would improve your opinion of the people in videos, check out the unwrap-mosaics technique from Microsoft Research.

A great warrior wanted to test his manhood. Every opponent he faced fell before him. He heard of a fighting monk, an enlightened warrior who lived alone at the top of a mountain in a secret temple. He resigned himself to practice, perfect his skills, then find and face this monk in battle. It would be the ultimate validation of his mastery and abilities.

When it was time, he climbed the mountain and searched for the secret temple for seven days. All the while, he thought of the boldest, most offensive challenges that he would use to inspire the fiercest battle from the monk. On the last day, he came to a clearing and there he saw the steps of a small temple. On the steps sat a formidable man with the clothes of a holy man and a serene smile on his lips.

The warrior puffed up his chest and, with no introduction, began hurling insults upon the monk. The monk only smiled at him. The warrior redoubled his efforts, berating the monk for everything from his appearance to his mute stupidity. He questioned the virtue of his mother and heaped insults upon the sacred temple. All the while the monk sat smiling. After a time, the warrior became hoarse and enraged.

“Why do you just sit there like an idiot? Why do you smile when I insult you? If you were a real man and a worthy warrior, you would stand up to me!”, cried the warrior.

“May I ask you some questions?”, inquired the monk.

“Ask what you will.”, said the exasperated warrior, hoping that the monk’s sudden breaking of his silence was a route to engaging him and moving him to anger.

“If I give you a gift, and you refuse to take it, to whom does it belong?”

“It still belongs to you.”, replied the warrior.

The monk smiled, “To whom do the insults belong?”

Friday 9398 –

I neglected to mention that the love cube (our Honda element) is now repaired… they replaced the whole hood – BHK think that it may be from a different model, and she might be right. I haven’t seen any good photos of 2006 vs other element hoods online yet, but we’ll get to the bottom of it, if it requires us to go to a car lot somewhere and look in person.

Last night at about 5:30ish, there was a storm that knocked out power to both Chesapeake Beach and North Beach… not to mention the surrounding towns, too. No juice means no oven, and since I was still dressed from work, I figured it’d be nice to take BHK out to dinner, seeing as she’s been craving meatballs all day. We tried Ledos, Asia Cafe and Mama Lucia’s north to no avail.. apparently everyone else had the same idea about eating out… even mexico was too mobbed, so we continued onwards to Mama Lucia’s south – The service was a bit on the weak side until BHK politely asked the waitress (while I was washing my hands in the men’s room) . Service improved after that…. we got home and both towns were still dark, save for places with generators.

I used the flashlight on my key chain to get us inside, and we lit a few rechargeable candle-style lamps for some ambient light. We have access to a lot of battery-powered light – cell phones, pda, laptops, flashlights… I think we could go days without running totally out of lamp-juice. That said – I want to recharge the candle-lights, since we hadn’t done them fully beforehand. The emergency flashlight and radio lit up the bathroom area nicely as a night lite – we opened the bedroom windows and went to bed, hoping that the heat wouldn’t be too bad… it wasn’t… but poor BHK didn’t sleep very well… I was snoring big time, as the CPAP runs on juice, too. Next time, I’ll bring the UPS from the computer room in to run it.

So, power was restored at about 2am this morning, and we were all able to get an hour or two’s rest before it was time for me to get up and get rolling to work. I hope to catch a little nap sometime tomorrow in order to try and catch up.

Thursday 9397 –

Power out at the house tonight, so we’re off to Mama Lucia’s for dinner! Looks like strong rains and downed trees knocked out all of North Beach and Chesapeake beach! [edit – power came back up at 2am – accorting to the computer, it went down at 5:25pm)

CNBC reports that Netflix’ shipping systems have been at least partially broken since Tuesday. They managed to ship nothing on Tuesday, half of what they were supposed to on Wednesday, and nothing today. What’s the deal? Apparently the outage affects 1/3 of their customers (including good ol’ Scotto and BHK), to whom Netflix is trying to figure out the best way to refund some cash. They’re still not sure what the root of the problems are, so in essence, they have no idea how to fix it. Be prepared for a few more days of outages, unless it turns out that it’s a super easy fix that’s much harder to diagnose than to repair.

Random Scotto Factoid –

I’m an avid reader but some very simple words are sometimes mental stumbling blocks.

Examples:

Singer. Someone who sings… but my brain always reads it as someone who singes. As in: What is that singer superficially burning today? I guess I’m not altogether wrong.

Also Bewilder is not equal to “Be Wilder“… but that’s how I hear it when I read it. conversely, I read Wilder as “Will-der”. I have no idea how I mixed tohse up as a kid.

I know the old gags about manslaughter / “Mans Laughter” and Therapist / “The Rapist”, but my mind never really ripped those words in the wrong way.

Walk is a word that just looks wrong to me… as does talk and balk. Ls and Ks just don’t jibe to me.

I officially know more about Rsync than I ever thought I would. It’s a mighty handy tool.

Long story short –

rsync is written as a replacement for rcp and scp. One of the earliest applications of rsync was to implement mirroring or backup for multiple Unix clients onto a central Unix server using rsync/ssh and standard Unix accounts. With a scheduling utility such as cron, one can even schedule automated encrypted rsync-based mirroring between multiple host computers and a central server.

Currently doing a master <-> master -> offisite slave config.

Also set up a sql-based login system for both the primary and backup servers for ftp – annoying, as the backup’s mysql config is just different enough to give a man fits. in the data directory rather than usr.

Beefy mac & cheese (made with veggie-meat, of course) with the remains of the rattatouile and green beans made for good eats while BHK and I watched the Kevin Sorbo episode of Middleman. The show keeps getting better and more entertianing… I wonder how long it’ll last? I hope it’ll keep steam going for another season.

I want to start watching Dexter – BHK is about a season ahead of me. Time to put episodes on the PSP for the commute to work.

Had the in-laws over for hot dogs and maybe the last good corn of the summer. Larry and Chris came over – Larry did corn while I worked the grill. BHK made a tasty chocolate-cheesecake mousse pie for dessert! good stuffs.

Thankfully, my tooth isn’t being as bothersome as it was last week – the trip to Dr. Wolf seems ot have done the temporary trick – I go in for a temp crown the top of september, and two weeks after that, I get a permanent one.

Freecreditreport.com is NOT actually free, nor is it related to Annualcreditreport.com, the free credit report that you are entitled to under federal law. So why are people still being tricked into signing up for a credit monitoring service in order to get something that they are entitled to under federal-freaking-law? Because the credit bureaus are linking them to the website and most consumers don’t believe that a major credit bureau would try to trick them. Always read the fine print! more here

Dan sent us a pile of stuff after cleaning out his guest room. A boatload of books, a few dvd’s:Batman Begins, King Kong – the newest one, Quest for Fire, Razor’s Edge, Life aquatic – and a copy of Valley of the Mammoths – looks to be a good game, but he couldn’t play it at the school’s game/SciFi club due to some of the caroon cavemen having visible genitalia. (He offered to draw clothes on them with a sharpie, but the students prefer Catan and Aquarius anyway.

His loss is our gain!

To me, tabletop games are a form of entertainment; I play to play, not play to win. I prefer light games that are amusing in and of themselves, games that are pleasing to play and offer something besides the chance to earn victory. Sometimes I’m in the mood to sit back and watch math at work, sometimes I just want to push pawns around and chuck some dice, and sometimes I want to claw my way to the top of the heap. Abstracts, beer-and-pretzels, RPG, wargames… I’m not picky, so long as it’s a fun ride.

I just found out that x1650 is the bare minimum of game cards for the next generation of goodies coming out this year. I gout rid of the x1600 just in the nick of time, it seems! I don’t want anything to make it hard to run spore or fallout 3. (Or ghostbusters, when it someday comes out. )

Random Scotto factoid – I can chug soda or beer at an alarming rate. That is part of why I don’t drink beer with any regularity.. it takes more than one to even begin to quench my thirst.

I sorta-kinda want to live in a styrofoam dome home. (at least as a little place or cabin out in the wilderness somewhere as a second home.)
