8937 – Saturday

After work yesterday we hit Aardvark to pick up some Icehouse pieces. We were in some serious luck, as he gave a ton to us at a very high discount. We got 2 monochrome stashes of Red, 2 of Blue, a Clear, a Yellow, and an Opaque White, (5 different colors, 7 sets), a stack of freebie Ice7 cards, plus Playing with Pyramids, and The Empty City – I think we gobbled up all of his warehouse’s Looney Stock. We also put in an order for Early American Chrononauts for pickup sometime next week.

Post Aardvark, it was a nibble at the In-laws for a little Chinese food , and Monk -watching. Unfortunately, it got a little hot, and my allergies started to kick up before I could watch Burn Notice (we did that tonight – with more garden veggies , crab cakes, tempura and Special Guest star Adam back from his mission work.). I’m glad insurance started 8/1 – time to hit the doc.

No real hits of friendship amnesty day… but maybe later.

Watched the “My Super Sweet 16” movie the other night, too … I had no idea that they made a movie *based* on a reality show…I thought it’d just be semi-scripted but actual spoiled bratty girls, not a full-blown production. Things of note – A lot of the sped-up time to zip into scene and zip out… and poor Neelix and Roddy Piper star in it! Do kids today actually use Internet-chat acronyms when they talk? Actually say Oh EM Gee, or is that some MTV fuddy-duddy’s idea of being cool?

Did I just say “kids today”? Criminy… I’m turning into a geezer.

Today, BHK and I put in an order for filler stashes of Orange, Purple, Black and Cyan, a pair of treehouse dice and some Martian Coasters straight from the Labs.

8936 – Friday – Friendship Amnesty Day

FRIENDSHIP AMNESTY DAY

The idea is to post a public post on Friday with the words “Friendship Amnesty Day” in the title. The reasoning behind it is that we’ve all had friendships that either blew up, or faded away, and this is a chance, providing everyone is willing to participate, to leave the door open to clear the air and let go of the past.

It doesn’t mean adding everyone you ever knew back, but it does mean getting rid of any bad feelings / regrets, and spreading a little good cheer around the LJ ‘verse. The creator of the meme means livejournal, but I’m going to extend it across the borders of the Internet and beyond. There’s nothing wrong with the concept in any media.

So, with that in mind… peace. I don’t/didn’t have very many people like that in my life, but the door is open, and I’m doing a clean slate.

BHK went shopping yesterday, and got all kinds of spiffy loot! Orange Iced Tea cups with Witches on ’em, a new casserole pan, some cute shoes, sweaters and a purse, all for a song. My cut were some yummy chocolate goodies – two bars: one made with blood oranges & cinnamon, the other with chili peppers & Hershey chocolate flavored gum. I think it’s time to go on a tour of Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Downside of the gum, or upside if you’re as infantile as I can be at times… the brown bubble gum leads to all kinds of scatological humor.

8935 – Thursday

After work last night, BHK and I had dinner at the Lebanese Taverna and then went to see Talk To Me which was surprisingly better than I thought. No roles were stepped on by big names (Cedric the Entertainer had me a little worried when I saw him in the credits) Some aspects of Petey Greene‘s life were left out, but you really can only do so much in a 2-hour movie. Plot-wise, there weren’t any surprises, but the story’s path seemed comfortable with simple viability. Though it was supposed to have taken place in DC, the bulk seems to have been shot in “generic city” or indoors – I didn’t get the Capitol vibe from the location. I’m glad we opted for that over The Simpsons or Transformers… I was more in the mood for a biopic than cartoony smash-em-up or yuk-em-ups.

On the way home, BHK pointed out to me that someone stole the man atop ATW hardware… now there’s a sign. “Return the Man now – Yes it was stolen)

I discovered the Vassal game engine. That should help with development of our own games, in addition to allowing a lot of regular new ones to try! Maybe I can lure Eryx into playing Axis and Allies minis online! All of the Carcassone variants appear to be done already, too.

All will be sniffed over in time, I’m sure – and now, the morning brings a new day. My ride to the train station overslept, but bhk got me to the station in fine time to catch my train into the city. That’s the good thing about planning ahead and making allowances for traffic and whatnot… I’m usually in by 8am, and this way, I got there by 8:30 (the time I’m officially due to arrive.) I did miss my “arrive by 8” bus by about 10 minutes, so I spent about 20 minutes waiting for the next one. – Gave me time to take the pictures below and write the text above on my phone.

Good meeting at work today about upgrading our CMS. I like the way folks are looking to work together for a solution, rather than complain – project appears to be slated for the end of ’07, or the beginning of ’08 for testing.

Constellation Power has applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to put a new nuclear reactor in Calvert county, the fourth to be applied for, nationwide, this year. There hasn’t been a new nuclear reactor built in the US since the Three Mile Island disaster, but with new tax incentives for power providers who get their applications complete before the end of next year, companies are positioning themselves to be able to take advantage of the new situation.

Are we ready for nuclear again? The US kind of freaked out after the Three Mile Island near-meltdown and the Chernobyl disaster, but with power needs proving insatiable, and with fossil fuels being subject to significant negative public attention due to global warming concerns, the timing could be ripe for an expansion of nuclear power.

Will it do anything to lower our power build? Almost certainly not. But, it might decrease dependence on fossil fuels, which can be considered a positive.

So, it’s August… only a couple of weeks until BHK’s birthday, Father in-laws birthday, and we’re looking to have Emily over in a weekend – and then the all of the Newsoms over perhaps two weeks after that. Emily is about 5 years old now, and she reminds me of little bit of Wendy, way back when 9even though Wendy was maybe twice that age. I still remember acting like a monkey with

for her, over a decade ago. Ook ook, extend the upper lip, scratch the noggin and the armpits, do a bowlegged walk… still brings a giggle to the young ladies. I doubt the Wendy would as be amused these days… she’s got to be 21 by now? maybe 22? She’s probably into more “grown-up” pursuits. I wonder how she and Marty are doing?

Thoughts for Emily’s visit.. Baltimore Aquarium, Blink (maybe try Uno?), Walking on the Boardwalk / Beach, Playstation, Fireworks, and the Candy Store. None of those are set in stone and there are other possibilities, too.

Hey, it’s August first! Happy Lughnasadh, the holy day of Lludd!

After I went to bed last night, Amy and BHK played more than a few games of Aquarius and Carcassone – Hunters & Gatherers. From my understanding, Amy won the bulk of them, but BHK wasn’t totally skunked. Nifty – There’s an online play version of C:H&G at Yucata and a solo self-play of Aquarius on the Aquarius link prior. If anyone wants in on a turn-based game or two, look for me there, or at superdupergames for icehouse -type stuff. I’m username scottobear in both, and try to log in once a night for a move or three. BHK and AMy also turned me on to Tribal Wars , which also looks pretty cool. I’d like to start a community or something to track all the different stuff!

Laugh-Out-Loud Cats #113

Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours. His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live.

“He doesn’t make too many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die,” said Dr. David Dosa in an interview. He describes the phenomenon in a poignant essay in Thursday’s issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

“Many family members take some solace from it. They appreciate the companionship that the cat provides for their dying loved one,” said Dosa, a geriatrician and assistant professor of medicine at Brown University.

The 2-year-old feline was adopted as a kitten and grew up in a third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The facility treats people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses.

After about six months, the staff noticed Oscar would make his own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses. He’d sniff and observe patients, then sit beside people who would wind up dying in a few hours.

Dosa said Oscar seems to take his work seriously and is generally aloof. “This is not a cat that’s friendly to people,” he said.

Oscar is better at predicting death than the people who work there, said Dr. Joan Teno of Brown University, who treats patients at the nursing home and is an expert on care for the terminally ill.

She was convinced of Oscar’s talent when he made his 13th correct call. While observing one patient, Teno said she noticed the woman wasn’t eating, was breathing with difficulty and that her legs had a bluish tinge, signs that often mean death is near.

Oscar wouldn’t stay inside the room though, so Teno thought his streak was broken. Instead, it turned out the doctor’s prediction was roughly 10 hours too early. Sure enough, during the patient’s final two hours, nurses told Teno that Oscar joined the woman at her bedside.

Doctors say most of the people who get a visit from the sweet-faced, gray-and-white cat are so ill they probably don’t know he’s there, so patients aren’t aware he’s a harbinger of death. Most families are grateful for the advanced warning, although one wanted Oscar out of the room while a family member died. When Oscar is put outside, he paces and meows his displeasure.

No one’s certain if Oscar’s behavior is scientifically significant or points to a cause. Teno wonders if the cat notices telltale scents or reads something into the behavior of the nurses who raised him. Nicholas Dodman, who directs an animal behavioral clinic at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and has read Dosa’s article, said the only way to know is to carefully document how Oscar divides his time between the living and dying.

If Oscar really is a furry grim reaper, it’s also possible his behavior could be driven by self-centered pleasures like a heated blanket placed on a dying person, Dodman said.

Nursing home staffers aren’t concerned with explaining Oscar, so long as he gives families a better chance at saying goodbye to the dying.

Oscar recently received a wall plaque publicly commending his “compassionate hospice care.”

Gummi Chicken feet. They’re tasty and disturbing.

I neglected to mention the taste sensation that BHK and I enjoyed throughout last night’s movie. (Amy chose to stick with M&Ms.)

Gummi Chicken feet.

Pretty dang good, actually. right thickness and texture for a good gummy candy – fruit flavored. Grotesque to look at, but still nifty. (ours weren’t in this cool packaging, but rather just a big plastic bag, which is all the more cool, as far as I’m concerned.

Who thought that it was a good idea?

Who hired a sculptor to carve chicken foot molds for candy?

I wish that I’d counted them before eating – I wonder now if there were an even number to account for 2-per chicken, or if one of the Gummi-creatures was a pegleg.

A plan to sell classic novellas in retro cigarette packs via cigarette vending machines after a U.K smoking ban in enclosed public places goes into effect. At least I think they’re going to (try to?) sell these in actual vending machines. Whatever the case, they’re called Tankbooks, and are being produced by Tank, a think tank, creative agency and publishing outfit. Dunno if this is a P.R. stunt, an art project, an honest effort to sell books in an interesting manner, or all of the above. Nifty-looking packages, whatever the case.

I think that decks of cards would be cool, too. Standard Decks of 52, or even some Fluxx flavors, maybe? Possibly a Barfly version of Munchkin ? Speaking of which, BHK won at Munchkin Bites tonight.

For future reference, as I think it’s pretty generally known right now:

LiveJournal was unavailable between approximately 2pm and 9:30pm PDT on Tuesday, July 24, 2007. Apparently, they weren’t the only ones with a power outage issue. Sites that are affected include CNET, Craigstlist, Technorati, Yelp and all Six Apart properties, TypePad, LiveJournal and Vox. I didn’t even notice, as I was at work and at the movies – I wonder how many people too the opportunity to breathe a little fresh air and feel sunlight on their skin?

See what happens when you don’t have geographically split clusters? I wonder how hard it would be to back up all of those guys… there’s got to be a monster amount of data there.

I find myself looking forward to being snowed in at home, with BHK, the kitties and me all playing card or board games in the living room. I think that maybe we can call a “virtual snow day” at the house sometime where we can just do that very thing, without waiting for a total power outage.

Tricycle’s Daily Dharma:

The Theory of Karma

The theory of karma should not be confused with so-called “moral justice” or “reward and punishment.” The idea of moral justice, or reward and punishment, arises out of the conception of a supreme being, a God, who sits in judgment, who is a law-giver and who decides what is right and wrong. The term “justice” is ambiguous and dangerous, and in its name more harm than good is done to humanity. The theory of karma is the theory of cause and effect, of action and reaction; it is a natural law, which has nothing to do with the idea of justice or reward and punishment. Every volitional action produces its effects or results. If a good action produces good effects and a bad action bad effects, it is not justice, or reward, or punishment meted out by anybody or any power sitting in judgment on your action, but this is in virtue of its own nature, its own law. This is not difficult to understand. But what is difficult is that, according to karma theory, the effects of a volitional action may continue to manifest themselves even in a life after death.

–Walpola Rahula

If you click this link you can read all about Jon Lovitz’s recent beating of the tar out of Andy Dick. (Karma? Nah.)

Tonight, BHK and Amy picked me up after almost being squashed like bugs with hair in ponytails by the Father-in-law’s poorly planned car-moving scheme. Fortunately, they were neither compressed under tons of steel and rubber, nor were they kneecapped by a renegade trailer careening off into the next world. I think that if the MiL finds out, poor FiL is going to get quite an earful.

We journeyed off to the Giant-man store (no relation to Hank Pym ) and I got a 2 pair of Deer Stags, one in brown and one in black. That should take care of wardrobe for a bit. They seem pretty comfortable – I hope they last a bit longer than my usual wear and tear.

After that, BHK, Amy and I all went to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix linked, in case you haven’t heard of it, dear journal. Taken on its own, I liked it. Of course, when I read the book, I thought it was in dire need of editing, and parsing it down to a movie script seems to have done a good job of trimming the fat. My biggest complaint is that it seems that the thespian playing Hermione has forgotten most of her acting lessons.

Off to Johnny Rockets for burger and fries – I like that they’ll do any of the stuff they have in a boca burger. It’s seldom that I can get a double cheeseburger with the works when I’m out. Bonus – Movie stubs got us 20% off the bill. Bigger bonus – Amy paid the bill!

Yesterday, we unpacked a few things from the Salem house, including BHK’s old yearbook from 4th grade, and a lot of her drawings circa 5-yrs old, 10 yr old and points in between. I’m glad we got to keep ’em.

It rarely fails to surprise how much music can energize me. Thanks again for the summer mix, Matt!

I meant to mention yesterday that Cyn’s house is lovely… I especially like the location. Highest spot in the town, I suspect, and very private. Her art is there throughout, but it doesn’t clutter – all of it is placed in a nice way. I also got a chance to meet her daughter, who is as friendly and charming as her mom.

Amy arrived! i was surprised to hear that she was in Baltimore by 8:30a – She must’ve left New York at about 5-5:30. We had a lovely dinner at Friendly’s, helped the in-laws move boxes from the u-haul truck, and got in a game of super munchkin before bed. BHK pulled out a win at the very last minute, when it looked like I had it all wrapped up. Nicely played, hon!

One of the weirder aspects of Edgewater, MD. There’s a store called ATW hardware that always has an unusual manikin tableau on the roof. Best word about current media frenzy – Potterdämmerung. That is *perfect*. I figure that I’ll get around to reading it eventually, but I’ll blaspheme by using the public library (or if BHK wants to own a copy, I’ll read hers when she’s done.) I don’t really care who lives or who dies, but I am interested in seeing how it all wraps up. I’m almost more interested in knowing what the “next big thing” will be, now that this is essentially all over; not counting the remaining movies, spin-offs, comics and whatnot.

We had a nice, luxuriously casual post-party day.

Originally, we intended to brunch with Cyn, but it seems that Joss doesn’t have a Sunday brunch… besides, we’re all sleepyheads anyhow. (Plus, Cyn was shaking off the effects of her prior-night’s festivities.)

Instead, we opted to head to the new Jasper’s (sort of a Bennigan’s-type place), and munch some lunch. It was a mixed bag, but mostly good, I think. The bar area has 12 hypnotically eye-attracting TVs… even if just golf is showing on-air. I was more distracted by the pseudo-southwestern-indian rhino-sculpture with the bright red tail. Unfortunate choice of color for that region, as Cyn’s first thought was urzbeeubvq, and mine was nany svfghyn. Hover over the text or use rot-13 to translate.

Apparently whenever we three get together, there’s a common conversational theme that tends to crop up. I will not be linking to the terms Filthy Sanchez, Tony Danza, Cleveland Steamer, Dutch Oven or Satchmo… but if you do search for them, I’ll just say it’s not safe for work. (see the prior paragraph’s last six words or so for a starter concept.

The food varied in quality – the veggie burger was probably my favorite, after the sweet potato. Crab dip was not the best, and that’s going to be tough for ’em, given that this is crab country. The partner visited our table and asked how everything was…. and we gave a lot of compliments and a fair amount of criticism. I think that he appreciated our input, and that they’ll do very well.

Since I haven’t uploaded the rhino picture yet, here’s a honeymoon photo of me in touristy-black socks & shorts, golfing with a gorilla, and BHK being beautiful in St. Augustine. I love that pic of her… it just makes me smile every time I look at her.

BHK and I watched Apocalypto across three houses, due to assorted cat-sitting duties for Tigger, Kiki and Chai – and polished off the last of it in our living room while munching on leftover party food. I really liked it. The story was really secondary to the setting and activity inside. The costume designer did a phenominal job, and if you get the dvd, check out “the making of” section. There were some moments that could’ve been scripted better, but the visuals were absolutely beautiful. I really liked that all of the actors were unknown to me – it made it much easier for me to take the characters as they were, rather than “that’s the Rock, and Robin Williams, and Robert DeNiro!” Definately the best art direction that I can remember seeing in a film recently.

We never did get around to playing lunch money or Chez goth – we’ll learn with Amy tomorrow! (if she doesn’t prefer to play pirates, or video games) – I hear she’s got a giant shark to trot out for our next battle.

New games BHK and I have or will be getting in the near future, in a loose order of when we’ll be playing ’em:

(I’ve also started a freebie account at superdupergames – mainly to try out online ice house sprawl – maybe BHK will start hitting it like we did with pente.net lots of stuff to choose from!)

  • We may get a treehouse die depending on how we get our pyramids.
  • you can play with a regular d6 – 1 tip, 2 swap, 3 hop, 4 dig, 5 aim, 6 wild
  • Stonehenge (5 games), and If I dig it.. (and why wouldn’t I? Check out the production diary) the Stonehenge Expansion (3 more games)
  • Polarity (thanks to keethrax)

Food du jour was good stuff… bhk made a cake with red Swedish fish and blue gummi sharks on it – celebrating little fish in a big pond transition for Adam and Jimmy away from high school, and on to the environs beyond. I got to do my standard grilling of the hot dogs, while BHK made some awesome mac & cheese, baked beans, chips & dip – Instead of ice cream scoops, folks that wanted ’em got Klondike bars of assorted types with the cake. (confetti-style sprinkles inside with a layer of red. I feel a bit bad that I didn’t get many good pictures this go ’round.) My Klondike of choice was strawberry cheesecake… yum.

We were a little disappointed at Mr. Nelson bringing alcohol with under agers in the batch, but aside from that, I think we all had a nice time… got a chance to set of fireworks left over form the 4th, and maybe created a little bit of peacemaking with Adam’s mom. Kendall was the most mature of the kids- even given that she’s going to be a Junior in high school, and everyone else has graduated.

I’m feeling really good lately. Not too creaky, and happy where I am mentally, emotionally, financially and spiritually. All things can improve, of course, but I’m doing AOK.

Sent my letter off to bro, with a pic of BHK and I on honeymoon at South of the Border – I think I’ll include one a letter, just to add 2000 words worth.

I think that picture makes me look like I have a giant head and a tiny little tyrannosaurus arm. Perspective.

I’ve never seen so much spoiler-fear as I have for the latest Harry Potter book. People refusing to go online, switching off emails, refusing to watch TV. I imagine some folks have abandoned the phone, too. A side effect of living in the information age, I guess.

Last night’s dinner at Mexico was good, but the slowest it’s ever been. Alberto (the manager) say with us and was very apologetic… we like him, and kidded back and forth about his brother out chasing skirts and drinking margaritas on the beach at the moment. Mother in law wouldn’t let us pay all the way, but finally settled on using the money to take care of Tigger while MIL and FIL are in Salem this weekend. (Our weekend’s going to be pretty busy, give that we’re also watching Tina’s kitties, having a Birthday party of Adam, Going to Sushi with Cyn and preparing for Amy’s visit on Monday.)

In-laws are in Salem as of tonight, so they can get the house one last bit of spit and polish before the renters move in on the 27th. I fear they’ll be more trouble than they’re worth, but you never know… sometimes it can be handy to have someone on-site to keep track of things.

“For most of life, nothing wonderful happens. If you don’t enjoy getting up and working and finishing your work and sitting down to a meal with family or friends, then the chances are that you’re not going to be very happy. If someone bases his happiness or unhappiness on major events like a great new job, huge amounts of money, a flawlessly happy marriage or a trip to Paris, that person isn’t going to be happy much of the time. If, on the other hand, happiness depends on a good breakfast, flowers in the yard, a drink or a nap, then we are more likely to live with quite a bit of happiness.” — Andy Rooney

I’m pretty dang happy. Every day, some wonderful stuff happens. Added bonus, BHK gave me a lollipop for my info page today!Aw… that’s very sweet! (no pun intended). I love her very much… each day I wonder more and more how I lived with Newt and nobody else all those years. Pye and BHK make the perfect additions to our family-team.

Last night I dreamt that BHK and I were hunting mosquitoes for the blood they consumed. Somehow, that blood was purified of known toxins, and if injected back into the original human hosts, they’d be immunized against all blood-borne diseases. I don’t know why we were grabbing them and putting the bugs in brown paper bags, rather than some safer environment. I did know that you could just eat the bug and be cured, but we didn’t know how many of these particular mosquitoes existed, and if the effects could be reproduced.

I’m wondering if I’ll ever go to Walt Disney World again? I don’t live in Florida, and the concept of “manufactured/processed joy” seems very different than “pure joy” pulled directly from the environment. I can have a lot of fun in the Westworld-type controlled experiment sore of scene, but there’s a different vibe in simply walking around, taking in history, art and nature as it is. Considering that I’m not really up for roller coasters these days, I don’t know if a journey to the more calm rides make it worthwhile. Pirates of The Caribbean and Haunted Mansion will always hold a special place for me… even if it’s just because they’re dark rides and are wonderfully air-conditioned after walking in the Florida sun for a few hours. I suspect EPCOT Center or Busch Gardens is more my speed for theme parks now, rather than the Magic Kingdom… or perhaps I’d feel differently if we just went and had fun. For a long while now, I’ve preferred exploration of the world around me… both on walkabout by myself, and now on journeys with BHK. I’m not sure if it’s wrong that I’m more entertained by urban decay or aquariums than by singing puppets… just that my tastes have changed a bit. I like the irony of Disney’s The Prisoner /Truman Show “friendly fascism”-style of better living in a plastic world… thanks in no small part due to hidden underground tunnels and secret police… but I’m also more than a little creeped out by it, too. I take it back. I find it *more* interesting as a result my irrational paranoia. I’d still rather wander a natural forest than a theme park, but Disney’s weird overlord aspect could be pretty groovy. The Mouse is a not-so-shadowy figure pulling the puppet strings across the Florida landscape and beyond.

After work, we took a little trip to Aardvark’s and let ’em know about the Strategist. He was cool – mentioned that he may have some out of print ice towers stuff that he’d be happy to hook us up with. We’ll still need to get the treehouse die and pyramids book, but that’s a good launching point. Meanwhile, we picked up Chez Goth to fool with while Amy’s over.

Too full of ice cream to go to Fred’s place for 50’s diner stuff, we hit the grocery for tomorrow’s party supplies and then the in-laws to babysit with Tigger for a few hours and watched 13th Warrior… by the middle of the movie we were read for eats – pizza worked for us. Tigger was a little sweetie.

Netforum 2006/01 or /02? Upgrade is looking pretty essential. That’s been part of my work lately, reviewing the next build and how well it’ll get into place. I just want it to be as seamless as possible… minimise any growing pains.

Being a giant guy has the side effect of being used as a mobile landmark. I’ve had folks tell their kids that if the get lost, look for me in a crowd. Not for me to babysit ’em, just that my head and shoulders tend to bob above other folks nearby. Also, it appears that I’m one of those “hey, I know you” types. I look both kind and trustworthy as well as looming and scary. I guess it depends on if I’ve shaved around the goatee and am more awake than walking dead. (In that case, folks cross the street to get away from me.) I’ve been in Maryland for about eight months now, and my newest gig just one. I’ve already been invited to a lot of picnics, parties, etc…. I don’t think it’ll be too long before the combination of North Beach’s small-townishness and other friendlies at work spirals it back up to a broader friends base. Right now I’m still a bit of “BHK’s Hubby” or “Larry’s Son-in-law”.

Back in the old days (when I was in high school and thereabouts) I was Mr. connected. Everyone knew me, or knew of me through someone else. I’m not sure how that happened, but I suspect it’s a side effect of the landmark issue above. I seldom bothered anyone, and folks rarely gave me any guff. I’m not as connected anymore – living in a new state, new job, etc. This came up during a little message exchange with Sirenity… regarding people who get talked to or “hey do I know you”ed a lot.

Dreamt of a white panel van with the word destruction on it. – BHK and I were hunting down somebody who sold us a faulty bed. We were pretty mad…. I wonder what we were going to do once we got the guy? That has no relation to the sailboat dream where all we had to eat was trader joes snacks that had gone stale. We were trapped on a catamaran with a big bag of stale crisps and candy-coated sunflower seeds… and no clean water.

Picked up a pair of new shirts, and two new ties. I never thought I’d ever own a purple shirt I could wear to work. I *really* never thought I’d ever wear a tie to work. Who knew? I actually enjoy putting on a corporate noose every here and again, even though it’s not required wear in the office. It makes me feel a bit more professional and has the sense of a “uniform” to keep me a bit more focused on my tasks.

Sting from the Macaroni Grill wasp has completely faded.. .it really didn’t feel like a sting so much as a very brief electrical shock followed by swelling.

Chore Wars lets you claim experience points for household chores. By getting a few people in your house or workplace to sign up, you can assign experience point rewards to individual chores, and see how quickly each of you levels up. Experience points are tracked both as weekly high-score charts, and as ongoing character sheets – every time you rack up 200XP of chores, your character gains a “level”, and their class changes to match the type of chores that they’ve been doing. (here’s my character, if you want to invite me to your party )

Enjoyed watching The Soup recap of 2007 with BHK over a late supper last night.. we were both pretty stuffed, and retired shortly after our meal. I’m impressed that they had so much fun, dopey stuff. Tonight’s dinner at the Macaroni Grill was nice, save for the hornet sting I got on my finger, brushing it off of BHK.

Check out this link, which takes a specified address and gives you the walking score for that address. The score assess the number of and distance to common destinations (restaurants, theaters, etc.). Pretty nifty stuff! (my current house gets a rating of 38 out of 100, or “not very walkable”… I disagree! I can carry groceries , go get food and whatnot within a mile of home. My old place got a rating of 83 out of 100… much more available within hoofing-it distance.)

Received this in the mail Tuesday night, not too long after posting the day’s entry. It’s in regards to Sunday’s entry, here.

My name is Josh S. Talley and I manage The Compleat Strategist in Falls Church, Va. Your journal entry was brought to my attention by my boss (one of the owners) after being brought to his attention by a Looney Labs representative. First off I would like to apologize to you and your friends for the lack of customer service you received (or didn’t as the case may be). I would also like you to revisit us sometime soon if possible. Second please let me assure you that my employee’s behavior is and always will be unacceptable to me. Third we can always try to order something if you don’t see it on the shelf and are happy to do so. We have many days that are activity days, but I have always stressed that the customer is to take priority and that product knowledge is a good thing to all my employees. I am working on rectifying the situation you experienced with the one employee and am truly sorry about your visit. I think you will find that we are a nice little store if you visit again. Granted we are not as nice as some stores, but considering the lack of “gaming” space and floor space in general, I feel we’ve done well. Please come visit again and as an apology for your first impression of the new Strategist, I’d like to extend a discount on any purchases when we next meet. I work any day but Wednesdays and Sunday, but will most likely be working those days soon in addition, heh.

Sorry again and looking forward to another visit, hopefully,

    -Josh S. Talley
Manager of The Compleat Strategist in Falls Church, Va.

    My reply-

Thank you for your speedy response. I appreciate your concern and desire to make things right. (I hope you don’t fire the sales guy on my account… hopefully he can be salvaged with a little customer service training.) We were pretty frustrated by the lack of salesmanship and pro-activity, given that we were actively curious and asked multiple questions about items on hand.

He wasn’t obnoxiously rude, he just didn’t attend to us and it felt like we were more an annoyance than a customer. I understand that a lot of your business likely comes from your events, but hopefully it wouldn’t preclude sales to new arrivals.

I really liked the size of your stock, and would be happy to try again in the near future… we’re still looking to pick up ice towers and treehouse (we’re pretty big fans of the looney labs catalog and love to support local businesses) , as well as a few other games. A discount would be greatly appreciated!

May I reprint your letter in my livejournal? I think it would please a lot of the folks that read it to know that you are interested in running a quality establishment.

Again, many thanks for your courteous reply. I have many fond memories of the Strategist in Florida, and would really like to have another one so close by to get my gaming loot from.

    His last answer –

Hello again Scott, please feel free to insert my letter into your livejournal entries. I read through the comments and would love to see more people come check us out and get a good experience from their visit. You are correct though, customers come first, no matter what. I have stressed this numerous times and some get it, some don’t, but what can I do? I can lead a horse to water, but can’t make it swim…heh. j/k Oh and I am pretty sure that we can order the Classic Deluxe Illuminati box set from SJ Games, just let us know. As for Brawl and any Cheapass Games we have to special order those, Cosmic Encounter was supposed to be reprinted, but I haven’t seen it yet. Playing with Pyramids I would have to check on but would be happy to do so. Anyways, please come see us again anytime.

24 generations =16,777,216 ancestors. I guess I won’t be taking my family tree that far!

I’m drinking way too much soda pop and coffee type stuff. Maybe it’s time to go on a Soda Sabbatical.

Crazy early morning wake up today… I had trouble getting out of bed again… it’s too comfy cozy under the covers with the kitties and BHK.

Dear Fox news. You’ve confirmed my thoughts about you again and again, but this is totally ridiculous. (via ecto – warning, justifiably foul language in the text) – Fox news making a claim that Fred Rogers was evil. Not as a joke, or ironically. Fox news should recognise evil… it sees it in the mirror every day. Reporting like that is beyond just evil.. they live in a world of lies and madness.

    From the link –

It’s a disgusting, vile little piece and it’s very likely that you won’t be able to get through all of it. To summarize. Fox News’ argument for Mr. Rogers being “evil” goes like this: he told two entire generations of children that they were “special just the way they are.” Then, in what can only be described as a despicable lie, the Fox News anchors claim that that’s precisely where Mr. Rogers left off. He never taught children anything except to merely exist in a static state of selfish self-entitlement. And that’s why my entire generation is comprised entirely of rapists, murderers, welfare recipients and drug addicts.

There are a lot of reasons to be offended by this, but the biggest reason is that Fred Rogers was the kindest, most inspiring and most loving man to have lived in the last 100 years. His love for children and his passion for their education and well-being were absolute and unhypocritical. Watch this clip from Mr. Rogers’ testimony to the US Senate in 1969 to increase funding for PBS. If you disagree with Mr. Rogers politically, that’s okay, but there is no mistaking the sincerity of his passion for child development.
