9686 – sun 4/19

Took it easy. in-laws came over for Chinese food.

Getting caught up on my light reading – Laura Lippman’s Baltimore Blues is pretty good – Simon R Green’s Nightside stuff is a bit too Mary Sue (Marty Lou?) – not as good as Jim Butcher’s Dresden books, but entertaining popcorn novels.

Reverting a bit to childplay – petting the cats, watcinhg tv, but mixing it up with catching up on my sql skills and visual studio strengths when not too stupid on muscle relaxers.

9682 – Wed –

Back too far gone – didn’t make it to work today. I still had to do work, however, and take a sick day, besides. Not much one can do about that, but at least I could work from the bedside, and stay in my pjs.

In-laws came over with Chinese food, and I primarily slept off my back with some prescribed night-night pills.

I should be ok to head to work tomorrow – I can’t afford not to! If I do stay home, I’d still have to visit the doc to get a time off slip, and transit is transit – no fun. The in-laws wanted to go to Selby bay for pizza, but also didn’t want to leave me behind.

I’m convinced that Dollhouse is better because we’re seeing less and less of the lead actress. Castle is still doing pretty well, too.

9672 – monday – back to work!

Well, back is still being tricky, but I was ok enough to go gently back to the office!

Back is sore, and poor BHK has contact allergy / dermatitis – We’re both just sort of shambling around for the moment, and trying to keep our heads together.

Fortunately, we’re both in pretty good moods, despite my nagging her not to scratch.

We were blessed by not having to make dinner tonight – Chris and Larry came back from the camping / Environmental trip with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and they picked up Chinese food and a 10-layer cake for us to gobble up while they regaled us with tales of no electricity, mud and guides with Elvis sideburns.

We cooled our heels, and watched a little NCIS (and In-law staple that I don’t mind at all) and then a really good Annie Oakley documentary on PBS. I have a new found respect for the lady.

Here, dear journal –  have a Pyewacket pic and a newton movie! Pye looking outside from my comfy zone on the couch, and Newton running around while BHK and I relax from the same area.

9663 – saturday

Day was a blur. Let’s see –

We were up late last night – stayed nestled in bed until about 10am when we realized I had to be to the doc’s by 11 in order to get my shots. (Doing it a week early, so I can skip next weekend – City-wide yard sale is something we want to hit early!

Got shots, and BHK showed me the menu to a local BBQ shack that she and the mom-in-law went to for lunch yesterday. I of course got the fried clams, which were very tasty. Most entertaining food was cornbread in the shape of a pickup truck – eaten before photographed. I’ll snap the next one – it was very tasty.

We went on a little shopping expedition with the in-laws – K-mart for plants in the garden – bok choy, broccoli, cabbage – picked up some robin’s eggs and nonpareils – kept the eggs (candy-coated, chocolate covered malted milk balls) and gave biscuits and non-p’s to the inlaws. got more pot pie squares and tomato sauce for a future meal or two, as well.

Visited Compter Renaissance, and they really didn’t have any tech that was newer than circa 1995. so much for me getting a memory upgrade or car charger for the EEE. While at K-mart, I looked into a power inverter for the love cube – all of the $30 ones were out, and the $80 was a bit too spendy for me.. not going to run a chainsaw or a fridge just yet.

Saw puppies in baby cribs again. Guy insisted that dogs I’m allergic to are hypoallergenic. Just because it doesn’t shed much doesn’t mean I’m not allergic.

Got home, rested a smidgen, and we had buffalo shrimp salad for dinner. I went into the other room to fix our router’s security since Comcast reset it – noticed that they had the router to go to only one computer at a time. (ip locked) – fixed router, it’ snow called "Green Glow" for springtime, and is passworded.

I got sick about 10 minutes after resetting the router. could be the shrimp, or just the fact that I overate – I scarfed down a lot of baked potato.

We did lights out from 8:30-9:30pm as part of an energy saving gesture called earth hour .

And now, the in-laws have gone home – We watched the Thomas Crown Affair . Not the best flick in the world – first time i had seen it all at once. Surprising that they’re making a sequel next year, 11 years later.  Newton was a little trickster tonight and got all sweet at Larry, and then made an effort to smack the glasses off his face.

G’nite, dear journal! A little soda-pop to soothe the stomach, and it’s off to bed!

9657 – Sunday –

Lazy day today, to make up for yesterday’s jaunt. We had a leisurely morning at home – woke up slowly and got ready to head out for the day.

After BHK got out of the shower, we took another nap… so walkies were out.

Via DCist

This morning the National Park Service announced it has revised the peak bloom dates for D.C.’s famed cherry blossoms, to April 1-4. They’ve also added on an overall "Blooming Period," from March 28-April 11, which nicely overlaps the dates of the National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 28-April 12).

The Chesapeake Bay’s health isn’t looking so hot these days.

Totday, we hung back – got up, showered, had a nibble, rested, opted out of boardwalking and watchmen

instead, we went with the in-laws to outback, shopped for groceries, and I was frightened by the evil bunny pigs.

9656 – Saturday –

Cable guy came by this morning to evaluate our Internet – he replaced the line from the pole to our house, and the box on the pole – looks better, but they’re sending out another truck on Monday to evaluate some more. I’m just glad it’s not an "inside the house" issue. I suspect with so many folks using Verizon around here, we may be the only Comcast people using that particular line. (side edit, spellchecker wanted to change "Comcast" to "compost". I feel the same way. )

While waiting for the cable guy, BHK tuned in to Twilight and I watched it with her.  It was about what I expected. The lead characters didn’t do much for me – I saw no "sizzle" and they weren’t particularly attractive. There was certainly a powerful Mary Sue vibe going on. I’d say I liked the wolf tribe folks most of the lot of ’em, and I think BHK liked the little emo-haircut news-kid.

After the pole-climber was done, we headed out for the day – First got my shots in record time – (BHK and Kendall’s Mom chatted, so it seemed more quickly that I thought) – Instead of our usual walk around town, I thought it’d be nice to take BHK to Annapolis and just hoof it there for a bit.

Did a lot of window shopping and people-watching. Rather than getting lunch, we just sort of nibbled at the assorted stops along the way. Split a bagel here, a cookie there, a coffee somewhere else.

Stopped off at third eye comics – picked up vol 1 of Planetary and the Essential Dr. Strange . (BHK grabbed The New York Four – being an NYU grad and all) They guys at Third Eye are always willing to lend a hand, and can recommend stuff that they think I’ll like – so far, so good! I’m not a huge Warren Ellis fan, but planetary has a lot of good stuff in it – and I’ve always dug Dr. Strange.

Passed by an estate sale – lots of nifty antiques – I think it gave BHK the idea to do a distressed dresser in the bedroom.

K-mart of the walking dead – Got some solar-charged tiki lights for the porch walkway. The employees and customers were more than a little frightening – red-eyed and many doing the thorozine shuffle. Contemplated lawn furniture for spring, and decided against it, as it was too rickety for me to be sitting on for any extended period.

Visited the local hardware store to look for a bracket to hang the bell from my dad’s boat up – may return there next week.

Paused at a school yard sale (raising money for the band to go to Canada) – we got some baked goods – a crazy-colored cupcake (see below), and a brownie…  BHK also snagged a hot dog, and bought her mom some orange glasses – perfect for a margarita sometime. I obtained another webcam – this one was only $1 after BHK haggled it down from $2. We’ll see if it works later this month.  Also seen below are the ATW man playing ping pong, a found travel bug (trailer on the bio lab at the same yard sale) and an advertisement that stopped BHK in her tracks. PUPPIES IN BABY CRIBS.

BHK loved the Puggle , but I was a bigger fan of the Brussels Griffon not as cute, but it had a fantastic and playful personality – a little "tough guy". It’s a good thing I’m still very allergic to the critters, or something probably would’ve come home with us.

The in-laws met with us later on, and we did supper at Adam’s Ribs – a onion loaf was bit greasy, but the veggies were good, and the service excellent.

Finished up Twilight when we got home… a lovely full day.

9652 – Tuesday – St. Patty’s Day!

Happy St. Patty’s, All you Irish!
(And I think everyone is Irish today.)

S6301503

In-laws and Adam came over tonight – BHK made wonderful Thai Curry soup, and it was a meal fit for a king!

Added Bonus of the day – she got a food processor for $13 – price must’ve been marked wrong, as it said $26 (on sale from $40ish)

It’s a school night – just enough time to fix Adam’s mac and hit the sack! G’nite, dear journal!

I’m a little out of whack today – hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Quiz-meme –

With technology on our doorstep and it’s affect on daily living, how concerned are you?
Tag your friends and see what they think. Cut and paste the questions and replace my answers with your own.

1. Do you see currency being replaced entirely by debit accounts and wired transactions by 2050?
No. I think that there will always be a desire for a harder to track form of currency, especially for consensual crime.

2. Do you feel intrusions into our very thoughts by technology in the next 10 years?
Facebook and Livejournal are already here!

3. If transactions become entirely electronic, do you feel that every thing you buy, sell or earn will be recorded?
Absolutely.

4.Of the 3 questions above, do you feel this data will be accessible by government and industry?
Yes.

5. Do you think this information could be used to control you in any way? Mishandled?
Certainly, which is why I suspect currency will not die.

6. Are you aware that scanning devices are now capable of translating our thoughts?
To a degree.

7. Are you aware that devices are becoming so small and integrated that they could be as small as a cell phone, and perform all of the actions exampled above including what cell phones already do now?
yes

8. After viewing this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ-VjUKAsao and reading this article http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16751-brain-scan-reveals-memories-of-where-youve-been.html
Do you still doubt the future possibility of technology?
Nope

9. would you like to play a game of poker wearing such a device if no one realized your ability?
nah

10. Do you think others would?
yes

9641 – Sunday –

We woke very slowly today- it was a pretty exhausting day yesterday, and this morning.

Grabbed a bagel and a bowl of cereal and took a nice walk up to the bay – it was 80 degrees at our house, but the wind off of the bay (once we made it down there) made it feel about 65. Thank goodness for cold water! BHK prefers the warm, I’m sure… but I was certainly refreshed by the bay breeze.

Finished the season finale of Burn Notice – There were some odd elements for the charater, but I suspect next season will be good too. To put it in spoiler sand hero terms – I sort of figured he had a code vs killing, and his hunteds got bought up or down, depending on how you look at it. My favorite line of the show was his mom’s – "How are they going to find me in Miami? A 60-year-old bleach blond? That doesn’t exactly narrow it down"

After that, I caught the end of  Willie Dynamite– pleasantly awful. I had it on in the background while I worked on the computer.

Mostly speaking through pictures this evening – before heading out tonight, I got my allergy shots, had a haircut at the local barber ($10!) and a lunch of mixed media in Deale – between the in-laws, BHK and I, we had White pizza with carrot, broccoli and asparagus / california roll / hush puppies / a hamburger & fries / fired mushrooms / veggie lo mein.

Hush puppies were the clear winner for me.

Headed back home to get ready for the party – black suit, purple shirt and tie, the requisite beads, and my multi-colored all-stars. BHK wore her green paisley top and purple boots / wrap combo.

Good food at Mardi Gras too – drunken noodles my fave, but all of the feed was pretty tasty. Photos from today- BHK, me, stilt man, Newton, Pyewacket

9629 – Tuesday

Happy Fat Tuesday!

In-laws came over and we all had pancakes for Dinner tonight – along with some deviled / boiled eggs, it made for a tasty end of the day.

Larry and I tried spotting the green comet Lulin tonight, but to no avail – the neighbor’s house blocked out that part of the horizon. Maybe sometime this weekend, we can head out to the boardwalk and try to spot a section that isn’t too lit up.

Word of the Day – EVOE! (from the Conception of Dionysus)

"Zeus stretched out on Semele’s bed in the form of a bull with human limbs. Then he was a panther. Then a young man with vine shoots in his curls. Finally he settled into that most perfect of shapes: the serpent. Zeus prolonged their union like some story without end, a rehearsal of the life of the god about to be generated. The snake slithered over Semele’s trembling body and gently licked her neck. Then, gripping her bust in one of his coils, wrapping her breasts in a scaly sash, he sprinkled her not with poison but with liquid honey. The snake was pressing his mouth against Semele’s mouth, a dribble of nectar trickling down onto her lips intoxicated her, and all the while vine leaves were sprouting up on the bed and there was a sound of drums beating in the darkness. The earth laughed. Dionysus was conceived just as Zeus shouted the name with which for centuries he was to be evoked: ‘Evoe!’"

That’s all I’ve got. Until later, dear journal.

0215091058.jpg

Nice walkies today – cool outside, saw a couple of new neighborhood cats (as well as a few of the regulars) – There are more than a few local houses with ship’s figureheads on them – one on the boardwalk puzzles me a bit, as I think they look better at the tip or meeting of two corners, rather than on a flat surface.

Stopped by the post office – a letter from insurance says I have fibromyalgia , but my doctor hasn’t said anything to me about it. Put me in a bit of a foul mood for a while – stewed in my own juices for a bit, but have since recovered. Giving the situation a name hasn’t really helped with finding a repair situation, and I suspect that calling it such will cause more than a few people to dismiss it like folks do with ADD, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or the like. It is one of those things that is hard ot diagnose, and is likely over-diagnosed. I’m not going to assume anything until we can go over more facts.

Tonight, the in-laws came back over and we watched the remainder of Lost in Austen. To be honest, it was off to a weak start, but was more entertaining in the 2nd half. After that polished off, a little Top Gear helped to elevate the rapidly diminishing testosterone volume. Looks like they’re back on track with the fun goofy stuff, and not so much straight car reviews. I prefer the weird challenges any day.

Valentine’s Day! BHK got peanut butter chocolates and a couple of cards from me… I got a wonderful couple of cards, a dragon kite with a wingspan is as wide as I am tall, [edit- added a spiffy sea monster video game for the wii] and some very spiffy coupons.

BHK and I curled up on the couch and played a little lego indiana jones on the wii (checked out form the library), but then the in-laws rang us up – No time for love, Dr. Jones!

We went with the in-laws to get a spot of lunch at Clarke’s Landing (Great view, and the best seafood place we’ve been to – plus, it was free – Valentine’s gift from the in-laws)  and then onward to Leonardtown (home of ol’ Witches Rock ), and visited a local gallery and used bookstore before heading back to headquarters. BHK got a couple of cookbooks, a pair of green cylindrical earrings, black-eyed susan seeds and some Chick-lit. We got Larry a book on Southern Pacific Railroad, and a Lou Reid CD. I just enjoyed roaming aorund with my sweetie, drinking a hot cup of Earl Gray tea and taking in some nifty stenciled graffiti.

0214091623.jpg.0214091623a.jpg

When we (in-laws and all) got home, we watched the Nancy Drew Movie (BHK loved it, and I thought it was cute, too.)

Now we’re watching the Lost in Austen miniseries, and I’m about ready for bed. BHK and Larry are already out cold, and Chris is not long to follow.

So, Yelp sells review placement?

"Stoppelman said Yelp doesn’t strong-arm merchants and that the site’s sponsorship program — its main source of revenue — doesn’t offer "pay for play" to advertisers.

Tell that to Tom Mulvihill, owner of Thai Issan restaurant in Cerritos. He received a letter from Yelp last summer informing him that his business had earned a rating of four stars out of five.

Shortly afterward, Mulvihill said he received a call from a Yelp saleswoman urging him to pay a minimum of $150 a month for sponsorship.

"She said sponsorship would allow us to hide the negative reviews and elevate the positive ones," he recalled.

Well, if that’s the case, how can they be considered even remotely valid? I’ve removed links from my site, and am considering what my alternatives are in the review arena.

9616 – Friday

8:01 AM – Discovered the hard way that the commuter bus doesn’t take checks – thankfully the fast stop up the road has an ATM so I can pay in cash, and yoo hoo to sooth my nerves. The driver was kind enough to give me a free ride today so I am still 10 rides on the ol’ ticket. Not bad for $38.25 (normally $4.25 a lift)

Getting cooler outside again – perhaps snow tomorrow? Many sunbeam “talkers” came from between the clouds after sunrise.

I wonder how hard it is to get an international driver’s license. I am so close to dc, that I suspect that it may be an option. I will look into that.

Starlings and sparrows are all out and about at the bus stop this morning – spring must be in the heart, if not in the air just yet.

Friday the 13th! As mentioned previously, the train smelled of fresh cupcakes, which is a nice way to start the day.

Long weekend ahead – some of the chiefs at work started it today. – I have said it before – it is amazing how much more work can be done when the side distractions have left for the day.

update – 1:21 PM – Polished off the tvp with some baked beans for lunch  – tasty stuff, and it looks like my gi tract isn’t going to rebel too much – it seems like some of my gut issues have abated a bit- I think that taking my medicine at night makes it a bit easier in the morning.

Today is Chris’s Birthday, so BHK and I will likely go shopping for our Valentine’s Day picnic tomorrow. I planned a little adventure for us to go out, walk holding hands, and have a nice romantic time together on the long weekend.

Chris mentioned something about all of us going to Selby Bay for her birthday dinner – Works for me! I suspect that I won’t have time to update more tonight, so until later, dear journal!
