Hey, I got The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe as part of my prezzie from sedef and oneeyed. (the original 15-issue series bound in one “phone book”; this was the original OHOTMU. Issues 13 and 14 were the ‘Book of the Dead and Disabled’,featuring characters and groups who were, at the time, believed dead or inactive, and issue 15 was the ‘Book of Weapons,Hardware, and Paraphernalia’, featuring technical drawings of Iron Man‘s armor,Spider-Man‘s web-shooters and other notable characters’ equipment. The back of each issue in the series features a brief Appendix, giving one-line listings for minor and inactive characters.

Are there any classic, purely USA horrors? Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, Giant Monsters, berserk Animals, Frankenstein, Ghosts… all so classic as to be pre-union.

Maybe it’s because the USA is such a young country. Slasher/Psycho predator Films are pretty American, but even Fritz Lang had M, but that’s a lot different than “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”.

Mad Scientists? Stevenson was Scottish and lived in Samoa, I think. I guess 1950’s style Alien Invasion? Sort of HG Wells… who was from the UK.

Zombies are pretty American, even if we’ve had walking dead stories more than 200 years ago.

Florida ren-fest started yesterday… one of the premiums I got for donating blood at FBC was free passes. (along with $15 for Darden restauants – My odds are best for olive garden.) First time donating at Boca rather than Lauderdale was no different an experience, but they have a lot more fun donation loot.

I wonder if Sammy ever got the manatee shirt I sent?

Did a little doodling followed by coloring with crayons this morning. I think that the smell of the crayons was almost more incentive to color than the drawings themselves. Nothing in particular, mostly flow of wrist doodles.

Anémic Cinéma – Marcel Duchamp’s visual Dada experiment from 1926.

Getting cold in Florida (for Florida, anyhow) cooling to the upper 50s, low 60s today, and dropping into possibly freezing temps tonight from 32-39?

snagged from christinAlignment quiz

I got:

Based on your answers to the quiz, your character’s most likely alignment is Neutral Good.

Neutral Good

A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. The common phrase for neutral good is “true good.” Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias toward or against order.

–excerpted from the Player’s Handbook, Chapter 6

Went on walkabout for a bit yesterday afternoon, but before I hoofed it, Mom and Wilt came by to drop off some goodies that they were getting rid of… some nifty hand-painted wine glasses and a veggie steamer / pasta pot. I don’t drink… wine.

I’ve been wearing a lot of colored, but plain t-shirts lately. Before this year, I think that all of my t-shirts (except undershirts) had some kind of picture, logo or saying on it… I rather like having some non-descript clothes. More colors than usual, too, not just sweatshirt gray / black / olive drab. Current mix is forest green, navy blue, light blue, maroon, dark rust, and a (perhaps ill-advised) “happy face” canary yellow.

There was a time years ago when 95% of what I wore outside of work were goofy T-shirts. Favorites were the good ol’ comic book ones — Spidey Duking it out with the Green Goblin (actually, I think I got that one as a birthday present from GP and Kat in the early 90s), Nick Fury, Flaming Carrot, Silver Surfer, A few different Matt Wagner Mage shirts, a Doctor Blasphemy, and a Reid Fleming, world’s toughest milkman ensemble. Others were a Miskatonic University Alumnus and plain logo, and weirdly (because I didn’t much dig the movie) a “Dick Tracy” opening night ticket shirt.

Hm, This Journal entry is a nice combination of boring and dorky, Scotto! Proof positive that I write primarily for myself, because precious few others could possibly care about my t-shirt preferences. Heck, even I might not care a year from now, but for now, I like having comfy clothes that fit, and don’t promote anything at all.

If I’m going to be dorky, I may as well put a random picture of a monkey up –

cowboy gorilla

Cowboy Gorilla! Yee-Haw! Speaking of not drinking wine, I think he was a vampire briefly. Vampire Cowboy Gorilla. Yup. He also fought Yarn Man a lot. also, a Badge pinned directly on his pecs seems a bit rough. Ii admire his ability to shoot and whip at the same time, though.

I’ve got to call Val up and wish her a happy happy – I think she’s 48 today. I owe her and Bobby a hello, even without a b’day involved.

8156 – Welcome, February!

GeotargetOdd, considering yesterday’s news, that I took Wilt and the Momster to see The Matador last night (Was going to do Kong again, but a 3 hour movie on a “school night” is a no no for me)…sort of a chaotic film, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone in particular, but I liked it, after a fashion. Maybe a bit too much of some things and not enough of others…. very vague, but if you’ve seen it, you probably know what I mean. About an assassin for hire, not an actual matador. Not quite a comedy, not quite a thriller… great acting by both leads.

May get together with Kev on Saturday for a FP with Tomi if good fortune and a lack of taking call holds. That’d be so very 1986 of us, all together! Tomi’s usually in Finland, and Kev and I are usually so busy! I’ve got to think of what movie to watch… Perhaps Die Hard, in the tradition of one of our first FP’s?

8120 –

GeotargetGroggy, foggy head this morning. Can’t seem to shake off the stupids.

Bro’s rolling in big dollars lately. I suspect he’s up to more than pressure cleaning, but don’t know for sure. He did sound clear and solid on the phone last night.

Video found on a search for Iguana and “scream like a girl” – Of course it’s some wacky asian game show.

8098 – Andy in lockup. Let’s see how he likes it.

Bro’s pal Andy was arrested today. He’s under wraps until September 26 for that grand theft charge and “resisting a merchant”… I’ll have to look that one up.

Geotarget

See mugshot gallery to compare, or entries on 2/24/04, 2/25/04, 11/21/04, 1/30/05, 6/7/05, somewhere in 7/2005, 8/3/05.

I really hope that means bro will keep his nose clean for a little while.

8093 – bike-about and the Hoff quiz

GeotargetUnsurprisingly, bro bailed on us getting together today, but I was still determined bike around the region, heading north this time.

I walked my bike to the gas station on 10th & federal, aired up the long-flat tires, rode east to the beach, north on a1a to palmetto park, went west to federal, and then south to 10th. a nice, scenic circuit, but I was too busy enjoying the ride in the cool weather to take many pics. 14.4 miles, total route (I doubled back a few time s to check the bike shop, and rode up Dixie to see what was new. I picked up some cool stuff at the art store which was having an insane blowout sale… one of those foot-tall wooden manikins for drawing bodies for $4, a thick pad full of 12 x 18″ newsprint paper for doodling on for $0.75, and a couple of graphite pencils for a buck. it was all 20% off those prices, too, so I got a lot of fun loot for less than what lunch would’ve cost me out. I wonder if Newt’ll mangle the wooden guy… the manikin is similar to the wooden Christmas tree ornaments that Newt loves to smack around.

Geotarget3602 calories burned if I was walking… I wonder what that translates to in cycling? Probably not nearly as much.

Here’s my route 14.4 miles, give or take.

bike-about Sunday morning
Wings place – still hasn’t repaired the impaled sign since Wilma.

bike-about Sunday morning
Island Water Sports – Contrary to the prior image, they wanted a giant shark head first in the roof. By the way, on the inside, there is a giant shark head coming through the ceiling, too.

I *think* that this is the Boca chamber of commerce, but I’m not sure. I really like the curvy divot on the side, slicing some of the windows.

8091 – vortiginous entry

GeotargetRS thinks that I have some big secret plans for the weekend, I think because I let her go on about her weekend plans and whatnot, and then we got to talking about something else. Nope, nothing special planned… just sleeping in and lingering around the neighborhood, doing more walkies if I can. No glamorous binges on booze and loose women, just a nice weekend out and about.

FDLE coming by the office on Monday morning, FBI Tuesday, and who knows what Wednesday will bring? Maybe big brain, ha-ha? I’m glad that HP has been as patient with me as possible.

I was so beat last night that I fell asleep at 8:30… woke up at 4ish am as a result. I suspect my weekend might be a little out of whack as a result. A bit too brisk out for a swim in the pool… maybe after the sun rises.

I find it amazing that my electric bill for the new one bedroom is less than my old studio… the old place must’ve not been very well weather sealed. $70 is almost a third less than what I paid last January. Also, automatic billpay is beautiful. I just get an email a week before it’s paid, so I can update my records, and hey, presto!

Laser pointer is nifty in the early morning fog… the line goes on for a huge distance.

Dopey dreams of work last night…I don’t much like it when the daily mundane starts stepping on areas that usually allow for people being changed into modular string bean / sabre-toothed tiger stereo components. Most of the drama that I was expecting to happen didn’t occur yesterday, so maybe that was why it was pressing on the brain. Next Friday will be considerably different, and I expect the company to have some drastic changes in one way or another by February.

May be getting together with Bro tomorrow, if plans stay on track. I think a beach walk is in order, or maybe a bike trip.

word of the day: fabiform – shaped like a bean

Speaking of words, I never seem to get a good opportunity to use the term “vortex”. (not to mention – vortical, vorticose, vorticular or vortiginous) Like kissing a woman’s hand, it’s either too much, or not enough.

Windows update now has an official security patch for the wmf vulnerability…update your system normally, and you’ll no longer need that patch posted earlier. To delete the old patch, go to the control panel, add/remove programs – It will be in the list of installed programs as “Windows WMFMetafile Vulnerability HotFix”. click on change/remove, and once it’s out, reboot. all done!

Those Yahoo ads are earning about $0.56 a day lately, down from an overall average of about $2.69 a day. (one insane day 12/15 that got nuts threw off the average.. $19.68) .. but most days haven’t broken a dollar. Upside, there has only been one day when *nothing* was earned since I started hosting them. That plus the $50 flat I get each month from my static front page linkies every month makes for a nice charity lump sum base.

8041 – Merry Christmas.

Geotarget

Peace, love and good cheer to everyone.

Bro called from his weekly place Boynton.. apparently his friend / resource in points North is in jail on a probation violation, so he won’t be moving there now. He asked for my address to write me and was wondering if there is a place there that he could visit. I didn’t have my local addy handy for him to write to me, but I gave him my work addy… but I did point out to him that he could hang out on my screen porch. There was some sort of domestic dispute taking place outside his place that bled over into the phone. He’s looking for a new weekly rental, because he’s not happy there. He mentioned a girlfriend hanging with him and playing god of war on the playstation. (note this was before his 2am wakeup mentioned the entry prior)

Holiday meme –

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
Hot Chocolate wins over holiday pancake batter, any day.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Elves wrap, Santa Sets ’em out.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
I prefer multi-colored, but white is nice too.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?
Sometimes. I haven’t this year.

5. When do you put your decorations up?
Dec 1, usually, but I’ve been neglectful. Just a few candles and cards out.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Traditional morning english-muffin pizzas.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child?
I don’t have many big Christmas memories as a kid, just a general sense of good cheer, sweet food, time off from school, fun tv and toys. Church was pretty cool, too. No specific incident comes to mind.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
What do you mean? The fact that he works out of Lapland *and* the North Pole? I saw a documentary about finland as a kid that mentioned Santa’s 2nd hangout.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
One at Midnight, or right before bed, depending. not the “big gift” though.

10. What kind of cookies does Santa get set out for him?
Santa likes sugar cookies, rice milk, and the reindeer get carrots.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Love to see it, but rarely do down here in heat-miserville.

12. Can you ice skate?
I used to play hockey all the time, but haven’t skated in years. I suspect it would come back to me pretty quickly.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
I liked the model of the goodyear blimp. It had a motorized revolving drum on the inside on which you could create “lighted” messages. (circa 1975)

14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
People actually trying to be nicer to one another.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
I’m easy.. hook me up with christmas cookies and brownies, and I’m your boy. Coffee is nice alongside.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Spreading love

17. What tops your tree?
Usually a star, but sometimes an angel. (Note, my traditions put the tree up on dec 24, and take it down on 12th night, jan 6)

18. Which do you prefer, Giving or receiving?
I enjoy giving more, though I certainly like to get prezzies, too.

19. What is your favorite Christmas Carol?
O Tannenbaum

20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum?
Yum!

8040 – Bro

GeotargetBro woke me at 2am on Christmas morning by calling me on the phone and asking me to look up some woman on the police blotters for Broward and palm beach counties. He claimed that they were going to hit midnight mass and she doesn’t have a phone. She supposedly has outstanding warrants, but I didn’t see any. When I told him that he was calling and waking me up at 2 f’ing in the morning, he barely apologized. I told him to call the police the next time he wanted to do a criminal search, or at least wait until a civil hour to ring me for a non-emergency.

Someone remind me to kick his keister when I wake back up.

8035 – Check it out now, funk soul brother

GeotargetHalf day today, out at noon. That’ll give me time to pick up something for the momster and wilt.

Get together with kev yesterday was postponed to another day by the server going down. I hope to catch up with him over the weekend, sometime.

7998 – Just another Manic Mondayyyyy…

GeotargetWent on a long walkabout yesterday… down Hillsboro to the beach, and then around to the Deerfield mall out on Powerline to see the Narnia movie and get $3.99 all you can eat buffet pizza at Cici’s. Shared a table with a Jamacian lady on “holiday” in the states – I put holiday in quotes, because she was working her vaykay in a child care center. I dug Narnia… the Christian allegory was there, but it wasn’t so heavy handed as to annoy any but folks that got offended at Tron or E.T. for the same stuff are going to bark louder over this.

That said, I quite enjoyed Narnia. The kids chosen to play were well-picked, and Edmund would make an excellent “Kid Miracleman” should someone decide to kick Alan Moore in the ribs and squeeze out the rights to make a movie. I quite enjoyed the CGI, which was smooth and believable despite what I’d heard earlier. I wonder how people that are unfamiliar with the books will do with the talking animals and other remarkable characters in the movie? Some might say it makes for a younger audience, but there are some grim parts that a little kid might not fare so well with, especially in regards to Aslan. (it is bloodless, but still strong content) I might’ve picked another person than Tilda Swinton to play the White Witch in the film, despite the fact that she did a fine job, I kept seeing the Borg Queen (even though Alice Krige is a totally different actress). The movie is as loyal to the story as I remember it (hasn’t been read for years… possibly/probably a decade or more.)

If I had a kid, I’d certainly take ’em to see it over any Harry Potter flick. I may look for the Narnia stuff as Audiobooks.. I suspect that it’ll transfer to listening-stuff better than Lord of the Rings.

Walkabout stats – 12.2 miles, burned 3034 calories. Good thing, considering that I scarfed down a pile o’pizza at Cici’s. I’m glad there isn’t one closer to work, or I’d be in diet danger.

Nose is a little sunburned from being out and about all day. Adds to the “Santa Look”.

Hm. That brings up a question.

I’d heard yesterday that 61% of folks in the USA wear corrective lenses. Can that be true? More than not?

Ah, here’s the breakdown.

Continue reading 7998 – Just another Manic Mondayyyyy…

7997 – palindromic number

GeotargetTalked with Val yesterday… Rhonnie (22) is dating her paramedic instructor (38). Kind of gross, but I don’t know the whole story. I’m just glad that she’s happy and having a good time. Russ is doing well, looking for places to do his residency. Grew a beard so that he wouldn’t look so “doogie houser”. $15,000 just in flights around the USA looking for a place to set up his gig. He’s going to have to be a doctor to pay off all of the debt he’s accrued, it seems.

Kreuger gets out of jail this weekend, but the sex offender thing is going to follow him until he gets cleared. I honestly wonder if he’s innocent.

Police called me up, looking for my bro to act as state’s witness… I was right about my guess regarding my brother’s “accident”. He was badly beaten up by someone that didn’t like his smart mouth. I contacted the office in charge of the case, (who left a subpoena at my old address) and passed along my bro’s phone information. I suspect this might be why he’s moving north, too… it’s probably just not safe for him to be in this neck of the woods anymore. Maybe a severe beating is what it took to get him the hell out of Dodge. I hope he can keep his stuff together.

Never did get to hit the movies yesterday.. just went grocery shopping with RS and her kidlet. Man, I thought my bill was bad.. try feeding a family of four with two hungry, healthy growing kids! Narnia might happen today, if the stars are right.

They are called echizen kurage and they sound like monsters from the trashier reaches of Japanese science fiction. They are 6ft wide and weigh 450lb (200kg), with countless poisonous tentacles, they have drifted across the void to terrorize the people of Japan.

Jellyfish fun facts:

  • The most poisonous jellyfish is the Australian sea wasp, or box jellyfish, with enough venom to kill 60 people. Wearing tights is an effective defense
  • The largest jellyfish ever found was a lion’s mane, with a bell 2m (7ft) across, and tentacles extending more than 35m
  • The notorious Portuguese man o’war is not a jellyfish at all but a collection of different organisms including stinging tentacles
  • Jellyfish have both male and female characteristics. A group releases sperm and eggs which mix in the water
  • A collection of jellyfish is known as a smack

7948 – last entry from my old place

GeotargetMeal with Momster, Wilt, Rosmary and Yizzy went well… unfortunately bro could not come with us. I ate to bursting, and napped for an hour when I got home. After the nap, I procrastinated for a bit, by surfing the net on borrowed wireless and gave big snuggies to the newtster rather than stack boxes right away. at about 7 I went to final packing proper, and once I hear form Danny, I’ll know when we’ll be picking up the truck and trying move #2 in earnest.

Rosemary (Wilt’s sis) is pretty cool, my first meeting with her. Yizzy is ok, a bit on the cheapskate side.

Bro was baker acted yesterday, after meeting the psych. He’s now in a ward without a phone, but they can bring one to him. He tried to check out with his injuries and they made him stick around.

Apparently, some local “friends” have his stuff, even though he is supposed to be out of Hollywood. I suspect that he’s totally back to where he was before, and is ashamed to tell me. All I really want is for him to be healthy, but even that seems to be a bit of a stretch.

[update- he was released on his own about 10am this morning]

He’s going to talk to a psych today about getting some help too.. he didn’t ‘fess up about being with his old crew, but did admit that every time he goes to Hollywood, he gets hurt.

I wonder if he got beaten up? The story has varied a few times during the course of the convo.
