7517 – Friday, but I’m not at work. no Sir.

On the road home from work, I got a call from bro… he wanted me to go with him to pay his fine at the courthouse. We met at the library, and we walked to the courthouse from there…. arrived at 4:35, and the payment area closed at 4:30. A helpful information desk person told me I could pay it online, or go to a nearby DMV location, that was open until 6. Seeing as we were a long march from any DMV, we hoofed it back to the library, and I paid it online. I printed up a receipt, and he was good to go. I was a little peeved that we didn’t just go online at the library and do it, but it gave me a chance to gab with bro, and stretch my legs a bit. He’s talking about maybe going to Belize to live. I think he’d survive fairly well there, and I can guess why he’d like to leave the USA for a span… plus, English is the official language over there, so he’d manage. It’s funny… Danny did missionary work teaching in Guatemala ages ago, too.

Last night was the 2-year birthday party for the club.. it was a huge cattle call of people looking for free booze and food. We had a nice time, but as it was standing room only for a good part of the night, we high-tailed it up the road, once we said hi to the crew, got some dinner and cake.

Magda played Newtie, and they got along very well. Newt was a bit shy, and didn’t attack.. he got cuddly with her after a few minutes of lovies (Like father like son, I guess). I think he figured out she’s the scent I’ve been bringing home.

Random Magda Factoid – In Columbia, there are some butterflies that are *HUGE*, black-wings things that scare the devil out of her.. she likes the little, colorful ones just fine, but if they’re as big as two hands together, all black, with long bug legs and wings that get in your face when you go to a storage room, no go. Here’s a picture (of the bug, not Magda being scared).

I still think Palmetto bugs are the ookiest of insects. Like regular cockroaches, except they’re dinosaur-huge, and can fly. I’ve heard them referred to as the only bug that requires license plates.

That may be from the time in the mid-80s when I was sleeping over at Brent’s house after working on a long session of gaming on his Apple ][…I woke up in the middle of the night, because I heard a clicking… didn’t know what it was. I looked around the room (still lit up, everyone was just strewn around, zonked out) and saw Brent, laying on his stomach… his back was peeling from a sunburn. Sitting on his left shoulder blade was a roach, gnawing on some of the peeled up skin.

So, Yeah, that was about as ookie an encounter with a Bug I’ve ever had. I think the fact that it was just sort of sitting there, pulling flaps of crispy friend-skin with his front legs, and making those clicky noises was about all my freshly awakened brain could handle. Unthinking, I took a magazine, rolled it up, and smacked him hard.

Brent was not too crazy about being awakened at 4am by me slapping his burn with a magazine, either.

I missed the roach, too… he scuttled off, but was integrated with the wall shortly thereafter. I suspect Brent wouldn’t have believed me if there wasn’t a body to be found, so that’s just as well.

I searched my journal for “brent” and “roach” and even “sunburn”… I’m surprised I haven’t mentioned it before now.

rosin_dubh pointed me to eNature, a guide to regional critters. (you can put a dud email address in when it asks for one)

Sample sub-article is a Manatee Link for Kellie.

When you’re smashing megalomaniac villains hellbent on world domination, the theft of Fort Knox’s gold reserves, or interrupting the morning newspaper delivery, you naturally don’t want to get your hands soiled or injured while fighting for truth, justice and the (insert name of your country here) way. That’s why so many denizens of the comics wear gloves – which, for superheroines, often means opera gloves.

I guess there’s a fetish for everyone.

Ok, I’m caught up for now… off to do my blood donation (I missed my earlier appointment this week due to hubbub.) Until later, dear journal.

7435 – FRIDAY! AT EFFIN’ LAST!

Good thoughts for Whims and her family right now.

Bro visited mom at work, was looking sharp. Clean, short-sleeved shirt, solid mindset, has a gig telemarketing. It was good for her to see him in decent shape for a change.

I want to sleep the whole weekend away. Just float in limbo, comfortably. Talk to some good friends, relax with the Newtie-boy. Maybe toss in a loaf or two of fresh baked bread and honey.

Got a free lunch donated to us at work yesterday… Lenny’s gave the company a platter of three big ol’ subs. Italian, Turkey and Veggie. I can dig a free lunch… ECN also gave me a bag of M&Ms for dessert.

I got to talk to MP for about a minute yesterday. It was nice, but far too short.

Looks like tropical storm Arlene is going to miss South Florida. – Rainy Weekend here.

Bro called yesterday morning, and was very thankful for the bailout.

When I got home last night, they were tearing down the little 2-bedroom house in my backyard. That’s a shame… I think that little building had been there since the 1930s or before. Cute little Key West-style place done in white with navy blue trim. I can now look out my bedroom window and see two streets over.

I rather think that I preferred the cozy sense of privacy that I had before, but we’ll see if I change my mind over the next couple of days. I wonder how this’ll effect security and flyby factor for the next major storm?

The street lamp bleeds a little mor [brief visit from Newt-foot on keyboard – /././../] e illumination over now.

Newt was watching the earthmover equipment with fascination…I wonder what he thought they were, from his point of view? I suspect he was more interested in the noise that they were making than anything else.

I didn’t even know the guy in the house had moved out. My brother used to hang out with the tenant’s son, a bodybuilder guy that eventually went to jail for some sort of assault / battery charge on a cop.

I have to remember to let GrayPumpkin see this.

Shatner does Se7en : Soon after the movie Seven came out, the MTV Movie Awards got William Shatner to do this parody. He plays the lead roles as each of his more famous characters: Captain Kirk, TJ Hooker, and himself as the host of Rescue 911. Includes a guest appearance by Carmen Electra as an alien.

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an Emperor – that’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone, if possible – Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another; human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful.

But we have lost the way.

7414 – Thursday

Weather Yesterday knocked me out. Made me wicked sleepy… After work, I had a long nap, and then watched Fog of War. It was quite fascinating, and I’d recommend it to anyone. First Time I’ve checked out the special features. Subtitles are in French, Spanish, Japanese, and Portuguese, and the additional scenes are of value.

Transcript and other info.

Krispy Kreme outlets will be giving away free doughnuts on 3 June 2005. (tomorrow)

OneWordMovie [Flash] asks you for any term and then produces a movie made from image search results of Google and others.

I enjoyed putting scottobear in there, since it’s unique enough to just flip though stuff related to my life, usually images posted in LJ. slowest speed is my preferred viewing method.

Gave platelets again last night. (pre-nap) Fortunately, the saline wasn’t as painful this time. I miss going at midday, when the nearby sub shop would bring over a free sammich instead of the center giving a packet of famous amos and a diet coke. Ah well, it’s charity, I’m not in it for the free lunch.

I’m already missing MP, and she’s not even gone yet. I’m a dope for getting too emotionally invested.

Newt loves it when I read to him at night. I don’t think it’s remotely strange to read him a bedtime story before we go to sleep. I like reading aloud, and he’s a good listener (when he’s not trying to sit on the book being read.)

I had a talk the other day with a coworker. They’re upset about the low level of respect that’s doled out in the office. My response is that what they think or say really doesn’t matter. If they don’t respect you, and you know you deserve respect… that’s them being ignorant. I don’t think it was very comforting.

Bro called me, still hasn’t gotten his new cell-phone, and wants me to help him get this fishing pole out of storage to better get some food from off the land. I think he’s got a telemarketing gig now, too. I’m hoping that I can get those for him shortly.

Right book, wrong description

Lately, I’ve been going to bed hungry. I’d rather have a little pang than bother to get up an eat. I don’t know if that’s better or worse for my diet, but sloth has officially defeated gluttony in my deadly sin ratings.

No good comcast resolution, so I canceled my billing with them. I may get the “dish”, or I may just do without regular TV for a while. I can keep myself very entertained without cable, considering I only really watch shows that I torrent lately.

I’m a terrible one for philosophy, mainly because most of what’s been presented to me has too much sophistry for me to accept.

6935 – bro update

Via Mom-

Just had a call from Ms Swartz [bro’s landlord] regarding Derek. She said he had not paid his rent and was served yesterday with a 3 day notice to vacate. She said she told him if he came up with his rent he could stay until the end of the month, but he had to leave by then. She said that she had numerous complaints from the other tenants of noise late at night, low life people and even a woman screaming. The tenants called the police, she has tried to get the police reports to get to the bottom of what was happening. She also said she went by the place and a very sad looking girl was with him…she said because she has met me, she feels badly for the family, but he has to go. This makes me sick and reminds me of his fathers last year..I’m at a loss.Mom

It’s worse than I thought… and I thought it was bad. I don’t think she needed to stick me with the dig about Dad at the end. I’ll forgive her slight, as these are trying times for her. She seems to forget her involvement in that whole prior disaster.

I wonder if this entry will be public, this time next year.

I wonder if my brother will be alive, this time next year.

I hope he doesn’t hurt anyone else on his way down. I’ve known for a long time that he’s a no-hope situation.

6926 – Bro update

Talked to Bro just now more about what happened last night and he’s got conflicting stories. Called up the mom to get her input, and she told me he called and told her that he was robbed last week, not last night. Pissed, I called bro back, and he waffled some more, claimed he was robbed both times, and couldn’t produce a single case number when I offered to track stuff for him with the police.

I told him to let his landlord and parole officer know what was up, and that if he *is* in fact getting robbed regularly, both by people he knows and doesn’t know, (no breaking and entering, stuff just “goes missing”) and he hasn’t changed the locks…then it’s time for him to move.

I can tell that most of his robbery talk is BS, because his precious xbox is still around. I can’t think of him owning a more easily grabbed, pawnable, object of opportunity.

He’s also certainly into shady stuff again… whenever anyone knocks on his door, he calls out that he’s on the phone with his brother, or his family, and for folks to pipe down.

I told him that if he hangs out with shady folks, he’s going to lose a lot more than his stuff… his life and his freedom will come next.

If he wants to spend the rest of his life in jail, that’s his choice. He knows damn well what he’s getting into or what he’s gotten himself into. My family has tried helping him time and time again, but we know full well now that only he can help himself. I’m sorry that he turned out the way he did, but there’s nothing I can do for him. I won’t give him anything except advice, and that’s something he already knows.

The guy just turned 32, and he’s still got the social skills and attitudes of a 13-year-old, and shows no signs of change, even after hitting rock bottom, earlier this year. He still won’t get a regular job, preferring instead to get money by hustling, or playing games.

He is the greatest disappointment in my life. Whenever he even starts to look like he’s getting his act together, it turns out that it’s all a lie.

On the upside, he has managed to pay his rent so far, and hasn’t copped the “landlord won’t do X, so I won’t pay rent” line yet. Let’s see how this month goes.

6924 – Link-light lately

Don’t play the Doom3 demo if you’ve got a cat that is willing to sneak up on you and swat your ponytail while you’re playing, in the dark, with hair-trigger reflexes looking for zombies to pop up and be shot.

Silly Newt! Silly Scotto! In a related story, I actually say “NGyaaahh!” when startled, rather than “Holy Crap” (and variations of same) as was previously thought. I thought only Darrin Stephens #1 (Dick York, the better, more stressed out Darrin) said stuff like that.

Bro claims that he was robbed last night. I have my doubts… he claims that he filed a police report. I’m going to call him on it later. I hate not being able to trust him at all. My heart is concerned for him, but my brain tells me that this is probably a ploy for sympathy, money, and an excuse as to why the DVDs I lent him have vanished. (probably pawned.)Site Meter

Dan’s pretty busy this weekend, plus he’s not over-fond of Latin culture, so I’m on my own heading to Viva Broward.

It sounds like I missed a good one last night, the second Bush / Kerry “debate”. Maybe I’ll download it and review. Probably I’ll just skip it. Did Bush actually call Terrorists “Haters”?

I feel bad for Odd Todd… it seems that his TV show didn’t take. At least he got a to make a cartoon about it. Keep a stiff upper lip, Todd! Fie on comedy Central!

6914 – Saturn-day

Shuffling into work on a Saturday, to set up some computers while there’s minimal foot-traffic. We’re going to to the 3-way shuffle. New box the LD, LD’s box to RR, RR’s box to the scrap heap. Normally, that wouldn’t be so bad, but doing all of the installing and configging will be pesky. I may be helping LD and LH swap desks, and pertinent computers, too. If I multitask, I foresee a 3-4 hour job, if everything runs smoothly.

Big Kahuna may be slipping me a bonus to do so… it’d be nice if that’s the case.

Sketch-a-move. Neat Idea for a toy car… it follows the path you draw on it. nifty concept. one of the more cool things I’ve seen lately.

Bro called and apologized for bailing on Monday. Maybe I can take him out to lunch sometime this week.

Oktoberfest is coming… maybe I won’t totally miss it this year. Chicken Dance!

Downloaded Dawn of War demo… it’s really nice. A typical build your resources, make an army , hold your ground game, like age of empires, but graphically amazing… and amazingly graphic. Definitely M for mature. The voice talent is sweet, too. Multiplayer must be a hoot.

I’m doing a community meeting with the local police tonight… Hopefully that’ll fly well. The map stuff always impresses folks.
