6485 and the sun dawns on a new day.

mug shotMug shot enlarges if clicked on. Good Job, bro. You’ve finally gotten yourself into a situation that nobody can extract you from. I wonder if he realises what he’s done to himself. A thief and a junkie. Want to know what else hurts, dear journal? Through the layers of his face and bone, I can see my father there. His name dragged through the dirt by the actions of his son. I feel so bad for my brother that it’s a physical pain, and I’m so angry with him, if he were here right now, I don’t know if I’d cry or beat the living shit out of him. Maybe do both.

Here’s the rest of the story that I got from the police via mother. He and Andy were arrested for attempted theft of a boat from the marina down at lauderdale-by-the-sea. The owner caught them with bolt cutters, trying to put it on his trailer hitch. When confronted, (one holding a bolt cutter, the other, the broken lock,) they claimed that they were looking to buy the boat and wanted to see if it would fit on the back of the truck.

When they showed up at his apartment, andy was there, and there was an assortment of needles on the table. Also, his recently filled prescription (2/23/04) of Xanax, 60 count had only 27 pills inside. I don’t know if he took the rest, or sold them, or some combination. He told me he was swapping over to zoloft, but apparently even that was a lie.

It’s expected that his bond will be $5000, taking into account his prior record. Neither my Mother nor will I provide it to him. He can sit in jail and wait on his court date. Maybe it’ll give him time to detox, and think about what a complete fucking idiot he’s been. I only hope that Andy isn’t too close by while all this is happening.. he took a trip to the pokey, too.(It’s harder to buy junk in jail than it is in prison, from what I understand.) Apparently Andy confessed to trying to steal the boat, while bro is going to stick to his guns, and plead moron, but not guilty.

I don’t know why a boat thief warrants six guys in unmarked cars or me having to look at a hole where bullets come out to kill people, but whatever. At least the Alpha-male cop was kind enough to bring those pills to my mother’s house, and didn’t require her to come out to the station. That’s surely appreciated.

3am – brother calls me to get him out of jail. I can’t, I’m on call, and the bail bondsman stil has my last fee… he says he’ll call Mike to pay $150 to get him out. we’ll see if his bail is actually that low.

In lighter news, morning thoughts.

Four new possible condos found and with luck, reviewed by me sometime this weekend.

Hmm.. my email post never made it. let’s requote from yesterday –

Einstein’s bagels are yummy, but the ultimate toasted cheese w/tomato on 12 grain is 21 frickin’ points…That’s way too high for what you get. Heck, that’s nearly as much as three pumpernickel bagels with veggie cream cheese on it…. (and I like pump-bagels a lot more, too.)

1 goblin-fart bagel – 6 points
2 tblsp veggie cream cheese – 1.5 points.

one little sammich taking up 2/3 of my daily intake…dang. (at least the pickle was 0 points.)

Funny how 5 hours later, overeating a sammich doesn’t seem to be so much of a big deal, eh?

Livejournal has added FOAF functionality… pretty cool. I’ve been waiting for a simplified version of this for quite some time.

via crschmidt

Some people might ask “What’s the point?” The point of FOAF is to allow machines to look through people, find information that you might be interested in about that person, and deliver it to you.

Perhaps I’m interested in other people that are friends of my friends who live near O’Hare airport – I’m looking for a ride. So, I put in my FOAF file, which defines my friends, and tell it to search for “basedNear” codes of O’Hare airport. By using FOAF, it could expand out, find friends of friends, and give you back contact information for them.

The tools to do this thing need larger base data to advance. We need to be able to describe ourselves in a way that computers can understand in order to make better our interactions. This is the purpose of the semantic web – and LiveJournal is working to start it off.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/scottobear/data/foaf is basically a machine-readable version of http://scottobear.livejournal.com/info and Here’s another way to browse my foaf via the explorerer

(If for some reason you don’t want your contact information shared, there’s an easy solution – simply choose to not have your information shown to all users, which will block it from your FOAF file as well. If you would like to block your FOAF file from containing information like your friendships, you can do so by including a URL in the Edit Information page, at http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml – simply fill in the “External FOAF URL” field.) Though, I can’t imagine why you’d list interests and such, and not want them to be indexed and found.

Any literati-types know about some writing SJ Perelnman or Woody Allen might’ve done about seeing films at MoMA? I’m looking to help out a researcher for the Department of Film and Media over there. Any help would be welcome.Site Meter

6395 Good travels, Ted. Say hi to Dad for me.

I just found out that Ted, my grandmother’s housemate for the last 25 years or so, passed away last night at 6pm. He’ll be missed a great deal… he was a wonderful guy, full of knowledge, good vibes and kindness. I am glad that he made it for as long as he did. I’m surprised that it hit me so hard as it was fairly expected to happen soon, but the reality of it is a blow. He was more a grandfather and mentor than the ones related by blood were.(They both passed away early on in my life.) He’s part of why I got into the computer / tech field in the first place. 6323 – First Card of the Season!

Newt and I got a lovely Christmas card from christin and head! Thank you!Site Meter

It’s coming down with thick, heavy drops of rain, so holiday shopping tonight is out. I feel a nap with the Newtster coming on.

Just got off of the phone with my brother, who is sounding really good.. just went through a major flu-bug, and he dried out his system during that time. I hope he bounces back strong and healthy.

My grandmother is improving. had a serious blood infection and pneumonia, but no brain damage and even no stroke. Bottom line is that she’s improving and the infection is gone… so that’s one less worry.

Rhode Island was giving hell to Newbie and CS again today… I think that if it keeps up, they both will walk before the month is through. I’d hate to see Newb go, especially, as we started there the same day, and have a sort of comeraderie, getting together at lunch and gabbing, etc. I’m beginning to wonder if someone dropped a house on RI’s sister.

Ahh. Lovely. Laundry done, Newt happily doing doughnuts on the fresh, warm, taut sheets on the bed, and I’ve got supper in the oven a-cookin’. I need to go back, and update my daily eats entries when I’m not feeling so lazy.

The ‘mat was a fine place for me to finish writing a nice long letter to my brother… i was surprised to see that my letter containing magneto returned to me, for insufficient postage. it was launched 10/1, so the circuit was a little slow, considering the distance traveled wasn’t too far. If I was *smart* I’d have put his address as the return addy, too. I don’t know if that old trick still works.

Ugh… Rick Sanchez is back. I’ll be boycotting any channel that has him on it. He ran over a guy while driving drunk, and paralyzed the person… not to mention the whole Elian / 9-11 nightmare / wsvn tabloid TV deal. He is, to my mind, the epitome of what’s wrong with “news” today.

Speaking of loopy news and striped cats, hatless mentions More Tigers in the News

Emboldened, perhaps, by the one that landed Roy of “Siegfried and..” fame in the hospital, tigers are on the attack in America’s cities. The New York Times checks in with this dispatch from the Bronx:

What the tiger, along with a four- to five-foot reptile called a caiman, was doing inside a cluttered apartment in the Drew Hamilton Houses at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and 141st Street remained a mystery yesterday.

In a news conference at the scene, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said the police became involved in the case on Wednesday when the apartment’s resident, Antoine Yates, called to say he had been bitten by a pit bull…

Getting to the tiger, a male, was no simple task. From an apartment on the fourth floor, the police first eased a pole-mounted camera out the window to keep track of him. Meanwhile, on the seventh floor, they prepared a team to rappel down so they would have a clearer view when firing tranquilizer darts to subdue him.

And so continues America’s drift into the Third World.

Police Subdue a Tiger in Harlem Apartment
By ALAN FEUER and JASON GEORGE

Published: October 5, 2003

To the sounds of enormous jungle roars, a police sniper rappelled down the side of a Harlem apartment building yesterday and fired tranquilizer darts through an open fifth-floor window to subdue — seat belts, please — a 350-pound Bengal tiger.

The daring, and creative, bit of sharpshooting helped end an episode in which the New York Police Department, unaccustomed to bagging big game, nonetheless managed to sedate the beast. Officials planned to send the tiger, temporarily being held at the Center for Animal Care and Control on 110th Street, to a conservancy in Ohio.

Kelly said the police became involved in the case on Wednesday when the apartment’s resident, Antoine Yates, called to say he had been bitten by a pit bull. When the police went to investigate, Mr. Kelly said, Mr. Yates met them in the lobby. He went to Harlem Hospital with bites on an arm and a leg.

On Thursday, the police got an anonymous tip saying a wild animal was somewhere in the city. On Friday, another call directed them to the exact address. On Friday night, the police found no one home, but talked to a neighbor who complained of large amounts of urine and a strong smell coming through the ceiling, Mr. Kelly said. The neighbor said her daughter had seen the tiger.

Yesterday, the tiger’s existence was confirmed. After a hole was cut in the apartment door.

Mr. Yates checked out of Harlem Hospital early yesterday, prompting an inquiry into his whereabouts. But investigators said last night he had been located in Philadelphia, where he was being treated at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. How Mr. Yates got to Philadelphia and the nature of his injuries were unclear. The police said he faced charges of reckless endangerment.

The caiman also was taken to the Center for Animal Care and Control shelter, the police said.

“This is an only-in-New-York story,” Mr. Kelly said.

The police also called in animal experts, including Dr. Robert A. Cook, head veterinarian at the Bronx Zoo. Dr. Cook, visibly angry over the cramped conditions in which the tiger prowled, said keeping the creature in such a setting was “crazy.”

“If he had escaped it would have been a very bad thing,” he said.

It was shortly before 4:30 p.m. when the police sniper, Officer Martin Duffy, armed with a dart gun and a rifle with live ammunition, began to rappel down toward the window. He fired one dart a few minutes later, which drew a knee-shaking roar from inside the apartment.

After a few more minutes it was determined that the tiger had been hit, the police said, but was not yet fully sedated. So Officer Duffy fired another dart.

As hundreds of onlookers gathered on the street, some began to wonder if this urban big cat would get along so well in the less cosmopolitan reaches of Ohio.

“My concern is that the city cat won’t make it in the country,” said Lynnette Braxton, 49. “He’s going to have no jazz, no hip-hop. He’s going to miss the Harlem Renaissance.”

Police offer these helpful tips for those who would engage in the crime of identity theft: First, try very hard not to steal the identity of someone who is a convicted sex offender.

Second, if having stolen and then assumed the identity of someone who turns out to be a sex offender, try very hard thereafter to refrain from domestic disputes that might result in your arrest for disorderly conduct. A tiny, whispering, Scotto-head Psst… I figured out who Newbie looks like to me… The girl from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, especially in the hair/ eyes / teeth and speech patterns. She was cracking me up today, talking about some of her boy’s antics. They’re such a cute couple… he looks like Chris O’Donnell form “scent of a woman”. Newbie and Rhode Island were very resistant to going on call. I imagine I’ll be on 2 weeks a month until we get more people.

Sent my Brother a nice care package… The letter had a few more zombies and a magneto heroclix top, as well as some sweets and smokes.

Escher for Real! – the work of M.C. Escher needs no introduction. We have all learned to appreciate the impossibilities that this master of illusion’s artwork presents to the layman’s eye. Nevertheless, it may come as a surprise for some, but many of the so-called ‘impossible’ drawings of M. C. Escher can be realized as actual physical objects.

Only 5 more months until my birfday!

Got my packages into the mail, so goodies (and forwarded goodies) should be winging the way to points north as I type this.

Getting together with the Bro tomorrow for an early supper at Tokyo bowl…I figure we can get out convo caught up there over some California rolls and miso, or bean burritos and rice. I want to spend as much time with him as possible before he heads off.

Ol’ Network gave us some trouble today, right as I was setting up an email account.. I thought first that the pc was down, then the server.. it turned out internet was broken across the board. A mild setback and we were up and running in under an hour.

I had a nice email convo, and got to call Kev on the phone to ask for him to donate some hardware, software and license stuff to ACIM, and also make a tentative appointment for a get together at IHOP for some tasty nighttime breakfast.

Putting a lot of our donated art stuff from Las Olas on eBay, and tracking that is going to be a daily fun stop

Sleepy Morning.

Mildly sore throat today, fell asleep without the CPAP on, and as a snoring result, my uvula is a bit swollen. Lovely sleepy time this morn.

I hope that the Mother got to talk with the Brother. I’ll know by this evening.

Happy 227th birthday, USA! Happy Saint Elizabeth of Portugal Day!

I heartily recommend reading the Declaration of Independence. It’s brief, and has a good vibe to it.

Your heart is a muscle the size of a fist. Keep loving. Keep fighting.

Five people added me yesterday, the biggest influx in a long time. I wonder what brought you in? Welcome!

It’s amazing to me how some people can make *consistently* thoughtless, mean-spirited, and bitter comments. Then I remind myself that there’s one in every crowd. (Hopefully only one!) I’d gotten spoiled by hanging out with thoughtful, friendly people. Talking with Bluehair really was caustic and thoughtless, and just really upset D…. put my teeth on edge, too. I’ve been feeling more annoyed with the person, but rather than lash out (like I’d like) I’m going to try to help that person be nicer to others. It’s possible C doesn’t realize what a dink he’s being, but I’m going to start pulling him aside and making a point of informing him of what he’s doing.

Bro did well today, got work, was able to take care of his own bills, and just called to be nice today. That’s always a plus!

Newt’s being a little doll today, just content to snuggle close. I can’t get enough of him! I’m so glad that there are so many nice folks in my life right now. 🙂

one year ago – a very well thought-out email about getting a journal code, for japaneseblossom, 100 questions, Newt-acrobatics

two years ago – mephitic, quiet mood, sponge bob, bad science, sexy factoids

Nothing 3 years past.

Apparently, bro got picked up in his bosses’ truck, and the boss had outstanding warrants. So, bro doesn’t have pay for today, or money to stay at the hostel tonight. To add insult to injury, his pack was in the car when it was impounded, and his pack taken (when he was asked…he said nothing in the car was his, because he thought the office was referring to the beer in the car, and didn’t want to go back on what’s he said for fear of pissing off the cop. Now, if he wants to get the bag with his phone charger, toiletries, and 4 sets of clothes, he has to go to the jail, fill out forms, get his boss to sign it, and get it notarized.

Meanwhile he came by here to get fresh clothes from his stores, and chat for a bit. I gave him enough money for another night at the hostel. I feel that he was telling me the truth. If it were for something illicit, he’d have asked for more money.

So. That trouble is over with, for now.

Happy Solstice!

Back from seeing the Hulk… It wasn’t too bad, but could’ve been Edited a bit, and the paternal issues reworked. The Fights with the army were well done, Actors a little flat with a few exceptions. (I Never thought that I’d take General Ross’s POV). the “super night fights” were a little too dark, and there were a lot of wacky scene changes. I’d give it a 5/10. it could’ve been edited and cleaned to a 7 I think.

Before the Hulk, Danny and I had a little lunch at Boston Market, and Chitty chatted about nothing in particular. I’m glad that he brought me a few boxes to pack goodies into.

Brother just called me up and said he needed to talk to me… and looking at my call waiting, he’s been calling me hourly. He’s supposed to be coming over so we can discuss whatever is bothering him. My hindbrain cynically suspects it’s just a beg for money. My forebrain fearfully hopes that’s the only problem he has. Meanwhile.. I get to sweat it out a bit and worry while I wait for his arrival.
