silly spam… why would *I*, the jolly green giant want human growth hormone?

Found out today that my accumulated sick time doesn’t accumulate. my 99.9123 hours left has been nullified, and I lost 3 days of my vacation time as a result. what it boils down to is that they stole over two weeks of paid time off from me, in case I have to do any hospital time. Also, they’ve told me that I have to use my vacation time before next June, because it no longer accumulates too, it resets.

I’m going to see if they can give me my 240 hours of vacation partially in pay, then… because there’s no way that I’ll just throw money away… or, if they like, I’ll just take a week off every month for the next six months. Somehow, I don’t think that they’ll let that happen. Same thing happened to Kev, and he’s got more time built up than I do!

After all is said and done, from now on I’ll get three personal days, three weeks vacation, and three sick days a year. Since I’m salaried, they don’t count any day that I’m in for at least four hours off of my time…. so I foresee a lot of 2-6 workdays in my future, too. ; P

I bet my dad would’ve made one of these for me as a kid.

Dang. Scientists in Australia are testing a new jet (called a scramjet) that may allow air travel at eight times the speed of sound. That would theoretically allow you travel around the world in about 5 hours.

Coming soon: New hackable kids toys. Can you imagine hacking the Instant Messaging stream and making the toys swear? Or saying things like “There’s a monster in your closet. I saw it. I’m your pal.” Oh, I can see so many cool and evil uses for those.

You thought telemarketers are annoying? How about commuter-quizzers? – Motorists on a busy interstate were flagged down at random to participate in a marketing survey about attitudes on a proposed high-speed railway to be built along the highway. Needless to say many of those “selected” were rather off-put by the tactics of the marketing company, and quite a few expressed their doubts about the legality of the operation.

I’ve got nice pot of earl gray tea.

I’m going to hit the sack fairly early tonight… catch up with my battery charging. I’m going to read a little bit before bed, though. I hope that tonight I get a full line of snooze in.

Nighty night, dear journal.

I wonder if wookies smell as much like camels as they sound.

a variant on the traveling garden gnome… ed grimley journeys the world. Nicely done, I must say.

I didn’t know peter gabriel was bald! he’s still got cool musical super-powers, even with lex luthor’s haircut.

This claims to alter the taste of semen! hmm… there’s a version for women too. weird. Men become apple flavored, and women soft citrus. I have no response to that.

Whoops! Bro just called.. He wants to ride up to the beach before it gets too hot. See you in a few, dear journal!

Went to All Books and Records with the bro… he got the spider-man ps2 game for a song (direct trade for street fighter 3….) and I got a copy of The Big Book of the Weird Wild West… he had things to do today, so we parted company there, and I went on to Past Present Future. Sadly, they had no copies of UA2 left in stock, but they’ll hold one and call me when it comes in. I did get gifties for the office however…The Essential Spider-Man, Volume 1, The Essential Fantastic Four Volume 1, Essential Hulk, and Essential Dr. Strange. That should keep Kevin, Karen, and myself busy for a while during the slow-compile, data-crunching times. I added a couple of those to my wish list, too…just so I can remember to order myself the Howard the duck collection. Waugh! Next time I send off a goodie bag, I’m going to get a few of the used things for myself. (No point in paying $4 shipping for a $4.50 book.)

Here’s the trip I took today…not bad… about 13 miles round trip(with shortcuts and bus travel not counting). a healthy haul (mind you, I had a nice shopping breather twice in between. It was a nice enough day that I didn’t take the bike too far on the bus… but it was nice to know that the option was there if I’d tuckered out. Needless to say, I did shortcut through the park on the way home, so you can shave about a mile off there. I’m bone tired now, but feel good after having had a nice shower.

A Picture of a squirrel from Holiday Park. He was drinking from a puddle, and I barely had time to catch him. I’m happy that I snapped him in motion! trimmed to spare narrow friend’s pages

As Albus Dumbledore, you are talented, intelligent, caring and a prominent leader. You have a full awareness of the distinction between right and wrong, and have a good and independent understanding of various moral issues. You are able to take leadership of a large group, and your conscientious and friendly nature makes you respectable to your peers.

What? Not Hagrid?

Bah!

Upside, the Bro will go with me as far as all-books, but then will be turning back. He’s doing something later this afternoon with his roomie and roomie’s cousin. I should be seeing Msk and Riker in my travels, though.

Going to launch in about 15 minutes, so I’ll see you later, dear journal.

going out tomorrow (hopefully with the bro) to PPF to pick up my copy of UA2, and maybe bicycle down the beach.

I’m going to look for a few books… “people of” series, and for, “Treasury of Fantastic and Mythological Creatures” compiled by Richard Huber. The book should be in the art section. It’s well over 1,000 line drawings of critters from nearly every period of human evolution: Babylonian, Pre-Columbian, Asian, Medieval Europe(Including Heironymous Bosch), etc. And some comic digests for around the computer lab. 🙂

maybe also to sawgrass to do some giftie shopping.

One of my bro’s sponsors (viper fins) renewed him…now he needs a boogie board sponsor again, maybe tundra?

This morning I dropped my old apartment keys to the landlord there…getting the full security back by this weekend…. “the check is in the mail”. $525.. That’s like found money. I was expecting her to write me a check when I got there, it was pretty much implied… but she claimed that her checkbook was at home, and that I could come by tomorrow and get it, or have her mail it. I asked her to please mail it, so I wouldn’t have to drive out of my way again.

I’m giving it by Saturday to make it to my hot little hands, before I start checking on it more intensely.

This bicycling deal is working out surprisingly well for my upper-body strength…I can feel it in my arms already. Enforced posture is a good thing.

I went by the police station today, and registered my bike… I now have a little red sticker with an ID number and state of Florida logo embossed in reflective white just above my tail light. I also discovered the serial number for my bike is visible only if you flip the thing upside down.

Now I have to put some other stickers on there… maybe that “hand caught in chain” crush hazard by the gears. 🙂

Got the meeting with bonbon worked out… I imagine more project requests will come from her in the near future… putting it off “indefinitely” until it has all the parts she wants.

Tomorrow is a visit to the doc’s .. follow-up on my back, and general checkup. I have a good feeling about that.

It’s nice to have my brother so nearby.

Thinking about the late 90’s… 99? the scent of old cigarettes on my shirt… spilled beer. I’m glad I don’t work at SG anymore. I think it’s officially closed down now, since last summer. I remember when they lost their liquor license, but continued to be open, with a “BYOB” policy, and just served soft drinks.

Only real test there was the test of will to get a better job, instead of staying someplace where it was easy to slack off.

Just got an email from a menstrualhut member who was upset about being chewed out by another user for posting an off-topic request for a lj-code. I let her know that I was sorry she was disrespected, but to please keep the posts on-topic. it got pretty ugly… folks calling one another “idiot”, “bitch”, “cunt” and “rag-whore” before I could get on top of it. I may need to make a general post to the community, and request that people keep a little respect for one another. I’m still pleased that I only have to deal with that sort of nonsense once in a blue moon.

I’m way behind on reading my fellow-journalists. either that, or I miss seeing some posts when they happen. Lately a few entries have slipped past, and I’ve only seen them when they’ve been referred to elsewhere.

“A team of researchers in central Africa say they’ve uncovered what appears to be the earliest evidence of the human family ever found — a skull, jawbone and teeth between 6 million and 7 million years old.”

Meeting with Bonbon today to establish exactly why she’s *still* abandoned the log program in favor of paper routines. She’s given different excuses to me and to Kev.

To me… “If I can’t run it on all the machines, I’ll just use the paper logs.” (One of the machines is stand-alone, and won’t support outside software on it.. it’s been installed on three other workstations throughout the room. she can take literally four steps to the other machine and enter her log from there. Even if that was the case, it doesn’t explain why she doesn’t use it on the other machines… and the software is in place to keep track of inventory, so we know how much has been printed, what to charge our client, and when to order more supplies.

To Kevin “It doesn’t do everything I want it to do” (Claiming it doesn’t have features she needs) If that’s the case, why did she tell me, the guy who *asked* every day as I was writing it “What features would you like? Any Reports you want to see? Any special things you’d like on the layout?” and then went on to cite examples and offer suggestions.

So, today, we’re both going to sit down with her and find out what we can do to make her use the program, and if it requires more features. I think that she’s going to putt some features out of her backside, wait the day or whatever for me to implement them, and then continue to ignore any new software that comes her way. If (when) that happens, she’s going to be in a world of trouble with Kev, and I’ll be annoyed because that’ll be my time that’s been wasted. We need to ask her directly and together why she’s not using it, and tell her that the paper logs will be *gone* either Today (if no upgrades are needed) or a week from the final program launch (to allow for bug-killing and education of the staff). The paper logs should never return.

She’s setting up a power vacuum over there… Has both of her sons working in the room with her. She thinks that if she leaves, she’ll take her boys with her and hose the company, or worse, leave her boys there, and hose the company from the inside.

That won’t happen… We’ll just pay the other folks overtime until we get good replacements for them all… we have decent redundant systems in place. I’m glad that I’m not her immediate supervisor… she answers pretty directly to Big Bird. If BB can’t handle it, Kevin will deal with things properly.

I’m not looking forward to the meeting, but I’ll be happy once a resolution is in place. Internal support can sometimes be more difficult than writing software for an outside client.

I'm a very good man, just not a very good wizard.

oh, freakin’ neato!

how honking nifty is that?

also, the converse is true… I can link to deadjournal accounts! eesh… too big a list, mayhap. public only posts, too, because it won’t detect outside security. but now I can read slashdot and plastic from my lj… handeeeee!

here’s a breakdown of some of the uses – http://www.webreference.com/scripts/sidebar/

sweetalyssm‘s post about not having photographed lately (great manips, and a magnificent model…) reminded me that I’ve not done much with my art lately, either. I think I’m going to have to commit an hour a day to just producing some writing again… I got lazy, and fell a big chunk out of the habit. Maybe lunch hour, instead of reading.. not sure. Just programming and fooling around isn’t very productive.

Talked to the bro… he’s doing well except for him and the mother got into some sort of argument, but we may all three have dinner together tomorrow night after work. We’ll see how that takes off. I guess she brought some girl back with her from the last trip to brazil, and is letting her camp out on the couch until she can get on her feet.

Got him some ice cream and good conversation.. always a nice combo.

Is it me, or am I really seeing turquoise jewelry everywhere these days? And crochet string tops?

Also.. Amazon eez de debbil.

Books are hard enough to resist without all this other ease of use stuff! Get thee behind me, oh one-click!

That reminds me… don’t ask how…

I dreamt that my sweetheart’s cat kicked over my fridge to get at the goodies inside, and he was kind enough to share with Newt. We came home to find the appliance on its side, with the furry-boys lapping at the spilled milk within. They seemed quite proud.

Ah… this is what I was looking for.

There it is… SUBTERRANEAN ISLAND BASE WITH OPTIONAL VOLCANO UPGRADE. set that up about 15/20 miles off the coast, and I’ll be ready. Maybe the undersea city option instead?

Chewing on Earth by David Brin right now… a big, thick paperback, I’m about 30 pages into it. It was given to me to read about two years ago, and am just getting around to it. Not as engrossing as the Uplift books yet, more of an environmental theme, so far. I think that after I finish it, I’ll be technically refreshed enough to focus on a few of the programming projects that’ve been on the back burner.

Bro’s being a swell guy today…picked up ice cream for me at 7-11… he fly, I buy. It’s too bad that he’s allergic to Newtie. They both like one another, too. Ah well… they get to say hi every now and then…the bro just can’t stay inside for too long, and has to wash his hands after giving or getting Newtie loves.

Speaking of Newt… he’s found someplace in the house to hide my hair ties. Not by the food dish, by the litter box or in it (thank goodness… bleh!)… I haven’t discovered all the nooks and crannies here yet. I know he likes to sneak behind my books on the lower shelf (it’s deep).. hopefully he’s not putting them in a cache there…. Hard to get to .

misc tests

I coughed today, and heard an echo of my father.

I clear my throat in the exact same way. I had no idea until this morning.

Comforting, and sort of disconcerting at the same time. My brother and I have similar voice patterns, but not similar voices. genetic? learned? a little of both, I think.

reread robinson crusoe last night… I never noticed a specific error before… he strips down naked, swims to the ship for supplies, and then puts the supplies in his pockets… what is he, a marsupial?

good deed of the day – gave my all day bus pass to a guy as I got home.. saved him $2.50.

bought cat food, and seeds to plant in the garden area under my south and eastwindows…. sweet alyssum, and moonflowers. I may crossplant some catgrass out there too, for Newt’s friendly visitor.

Well, off to the showers, and a book to read in my NEW bed.gnite, dear journal.

Spoke briefly but pleasantly with my brother after playing a considerable amount of phone tag this afternoon… it seems that Francesco (his landlord) took my suggestions of cleaning the place up to heart after a potential tenant decided not to lease after seeing it sans a coat of paint and a good cleaning. Latest word is that the Terrazzo will be overlaid with tile or carpet. I hope tile, much simpler with a pair of hirsute boys living there…though Newt sheds more than I do. The bro apparently sold him on my moving in with true tales of my reliability with payment schedules and quiet living. (No bills overdue or crack use here!) Also, Francesco likes my brother… he’s been a good tenant with him since he arrived back from Hawaii. I’m quite enthusiastic about living next door… He and I both have enough respect for one another to call before coming over, even if we only live two doors apart.

I’m also hoping that it comes through, because it’s one of the better deals financially for the district… taking into account that cable will be free, I’ll be paying about $15 less a month than I am now. I’ll finally get the History channel unscrambled, and the Sci-fi channel again. (Is there anything worth watching on Sci-fi anymore? I used to only watch it for the Bionic Woman and the odd 60’s shows…Time Tunnel, Lost in Space, Land of the Giants… I hear that the original programming is a little feeble.)

Doable would be running a wireless network (or heck, even a cable, maybe if need be) between here and the outside courtyard… maybe into my brother’s place, too, for multiplayer gaming, or just to let him surf from his place at DSL speed. I imagine that I’d be burning more CD’s for him now, as he discovers the wonders of file-sharing.

I like being closer to the bro, being able to help him out and be more social.

Variables off the top of my head to take care of when I move into a new place:

  • Theft / Disaster insurance
  • Parking for the future bike – I may end up just keeping it in the apartment, by the door.
  • DSL or Cable High-speed access (looks like both are available)
  • Shopping Areas, particularly for groceries, books, and hippy-goods.
  • A separate green-grocer?
  • Places to walk, parks, beaches, etc.
  • Library
  • Laundry
  • Takeout & Sit Down – Thai, Chinese, American, Spanish and Italian
  • Nearness to Police / Ambulance / Fire Stations (Close enough to be quickly served, far enough away to be quietly served.)
  • Bus Routes / Taxi / Metro Rail
  • Possible New places of contract employment?
  • Local Human & Animal Hospitals
  • A local map is going to be a must… do like I did when I first moved to Pompano from Davie… put it on the fridge, or a corkboard.
  • Clothes Store
  • Shoe Store
  • Blood Donation Center
  • How’s the night sky’s light index?

From metafilter –

And The Winner Is….
Hurray! I can finally sleep at night, the new M&M color is Purple. The intro is a bit annoying, but the flash page they have to show voting stats by country is kinda nifty. mmmmmm…purpliscious

The new money will be called NexGen
The Treasury and Federal Reserve make it official: Starting in 2003, U.S. currency will have pretty colors. But they don’t say which colors!
Is anyone else creeped out that they call the money “NexGen”? It sounds so … Orwellian.

Rainy Morning… cool, and moist.

Well, the first alternate near me looks ok… but I’m sort of getting my heart set on being a little closer to where my brother lives.

I talked to a few other possibilities down in Lauderdale… there’s one that’s a little expensive, but is quite nice… I’m still hoping that the one I really want gets his act together, and cleans it up properly. The cottage is ok… about $90 more a month than I wanted to pay, but the utilities are included. (so it’s really only about $25-50 more, depending on the A/C costs)… and it’s not available until the bottom of July. (which means I might take a month to month lease hear, just for July… we’ll see how the deadline goes.

Looks like this Saturday will be spent in Lauderdale, eyeballing some of the properties there.

I’m confident that a good place will be found.

I’m looking to pick up a mountain bike or hybrid for tooling around sometime soon… maybe even as part of my commute to work, depending on weather. a “sitting-up” bike for city and beach traffic.

Stuff I have to make a point of getting –

  • Rack over the rear wheel for spare clothes / books / etc
  • basic tool kit and tire pump
  • *fenders*… I don’t want a skunk strip up my back if it starts to rain…
  • White headlight, red rear reflector, and a red tail light.

Where I live, a bike is legally defined as a vehicle. Same rights to the roadway and must obey the same traffic laws as operators of other vehicles, including stopping for stop signs and traffic lights, riding with the flow of traffic, using lights at night, and yielding right-of-way when entering a roadway.

I may not get the apartment next door to my bro…. it needs a *lot* of work, and I don’t know if the landlord is interested in getting all that needs doing taken care of by the time I’m ready to move in.

I have a few new alternate places lined up… going to give one a look-see tomorrow morning at 9… all new kitchen/bath/tile/doors/appliances, and about $50 more a month than the one near the bro. At this rate, I’m beginning to suspect that one of the alternates is where I’ll end up. Brother rode around his neighborhood, and collected a few excellent phone numbers of places near him… I’ll call them again tomorrow during normal business hours. One sounds especially good.

Argh! why is my lj in read only mode, *now*? (9pm)

painted desert, halloween, and spiderman.

One year ago tonight, I was sharing thoughts with my beloved of the painted desert… These days, I have a split desire. one side of me wishes to keep her with me, all to myself, and just orbit off into bliss with her. The other half wants to take her around with my hippie buddies, especially Cathi, Dave and Leisa, where we can just goof around and have a big group good time. I want to carve a gourd with all my sweetie and other pals… I don’t know if I’m going to have a pumpkin head on my stoop this year or not. If this cold keeps up, I may just blow off trick or treating again this year.

This coming Sunday, I have to take my bro to Mom’s for her birthday (it’s actually on Nov 1). Got her a nice hibiscus plant, and a gushy card… but I really don’t want to spend much time there. I can be nice and diplomatic for a bit, but I would just as soon keep it to 3 hours or less.

Remembering my first spook house as a little boy… I was probably five or six, and we went to one held at a hospital (I think was… I was little, remember).

I wasn’t afraid of the bloody doctor, or the witch with the cauldron… but a guy in a Spiderman costume grabbed my little brother, and ran off with him… I *freaked*. I went after him, and punched him as hard as my little kid-fists would let me. (not too hard, I guess.) My mother and grandma pried me off of him, but I would have no more of that place… I was pissed, and afraid. Later, I got mad because someone used Spidey’s costume in vain! (Still like ol’ Peter Parker, after all these years.)

I think that’s my first memory of an adrenaline rush.
