9091 – Monday

It started with a foggy Monday morning. (sakes, that’s even weaker than “It was a dark and stormy night.”) Sleepy start, but a little nap on the train into work gave me a little jump start. Warmer lately… upper 40s, with very little wind.

Work progressed evenly, though there is plenty to do. The holiday cookie competition was launched in the break room – 4 entries this year. A white chocolate / cranberry drop, pecan bar with milk chocolate, an oatmeal-type square, and a rum ball sort of cookie…. I’m torn, because they’re all good stuff. I think that I’ll end up voting for #2 or #3… another sampling tomorrow will help me to decide. 😉

Lunch was leftover ziti and veggies from last night’s din-din… it was yummy – garlic is a wonderful thing.

Heading home was a bit pokey, due to a delay on the green line… a person was hit by a train at Fort Meade, home of the NSA. My imagination makes me wonder if it’s a spy or dark ops guy running away from the men in black. Some mastermind making off with the keyword list from ECHELON, no doubt. We have a couple of those radomes in North Beach/Chesapeake Beach, come to think of it.

Why yes, I did run a little program on the above for wiki-links. That’s sort of distracting… I doubt that I’ll do that as regularly again. I’m a little goggle-eyed just looking at all of the possible snap link-bubbles there.

Got home, and snacked on Cheese crackers while watching Gossip Girl with BHK. I’m not sure when the episode was made, but it sure has a writer’s strike feel to it… Dixie from Brisco County has aged a lot better than Bruce Campbell. Then again, he’s ten years older than her. Speaking of which… I really dug Burn Notice – Fresher to me than House… presses all the right buttons for me.

After a snack, we finally got to see Transformers, despite all the warnings against it. I tend to agree, that it was really cornball and kind of dumb, but it had a couple of fun bits. I wouldn’t have walked out of the theater, but I might have complained about paying $10 to see it. Good for a no-brainer netflix night. Not worth seeing more than once. Speaking of flicks, I’m looking forward to seeing Machine Girl (note, blood-spray violence in the trailer – flying guillotine, drill bra, machine gun arm, and tempura / sushi trauma.)

BHK brought home two more game rentals… tried out one, Geometry Wars. Fun, but tough… very retro feel due to the vector graphics and asteroids / omega race vibe. Not a lot to it, but the controls are pretty nifty, and multi-player has some real bite to it.

Overall, we had a relaxing night – still no lights on the tree, but that’s where we were last year, too. Tomorrow, I think that there’s a strong possibility of putting a few more items up… our little outdoor teak tree has some all-weather lights on, and it looks terribly cute. Photos are going to have to follow soon.

As it is, I’m up too late! A quick link, and I’m off to bedski.

Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project. It’s goatloads of old Edison cylinder recordings, some downloadable, plus a selection of them can be streamed while your browse. And yes, they have “Yes We Have No Bananas”, as recorded in 1923 by the Green Bros. Novelty Band. What more could one ask of any website?”

It seems that my curse on the most foul CompUSA is coming to fruition at last. (The whole fiasco with Compusa can be followed in the Compusa tag I have there… Started Nov. 10, 2005 – Ended March 20, 2006…over four months of limping along on lappie while big brain tried to get fixed… and that’s with a Full service contract!)

CompUSA has been sold to an affiliate of restructuring firm Gordon Bros., and will close all of its retail stores.

Downside is that I have a full service contract that lasts until March of 2008… I guess that’s only a few months away, anyhow. Next time, I’m building my own, or getting from a retailer I’m more happy with.

Had to do some catch up work today…. BHK made baked ziti and veggies for supper with Cathy and Dave. After chow time, we played a little wii sports… Dave slaughtered me at boxing… it was like beating up a little kid. We did better at Lego star wars and Rampage.

Once we tired of digital gaming, we trotted out the analog stuff.

Apples to Apples – I won one round, and BHK won the second handily. I forget who won the third game… either BHK or Cathy.

Hey, That’s My fish – I won first round by well over a dozen, BHK won the second… by one fish!

9073 – Sunday

Relaxed all day… played Chinagold, Schotten Totten, Hazienda, and such with BHK. Caught up with episodes of House, Watched the Incredibles, ate Thanksgiving leftovers, and didn’t worry too much about my pop.

A yearly thing I’ve been doing for a while now… Not always on his birthday.

Things about my dad at 38, as far as I remember: The Year was 1983 – Married, but signs were there that it was on the way out. Living in Boynton Beach, Florida. Had a son in High School(14), and another in the last year of elementary(10). Favorite movie in ’83 was likely Vacation – I think he liked it more than Octopussy, which is what might’ve been my next guess. Both He and his wife were working as Real Estate agents – Residential, primarily. Financially pretty well off – not living in a mansion, but a 4 bedroom, 2 bath house in the softer ‘burbs of Boynton Beach, Florida. The Family had three cars – two for showing property to clients and a bang-around one for the weekends and taking kids places. Sundays were more often spent with the family as a unit rather than everyone going separate ways – Saturday it seemed like the afternoon was for chores and then “Every man for himself.” That year, we went on a shorter vacation to Orlando – Stopped for a day at Kennedy Space Center, where he was rolled around in a wheelchair most of the time due to horsing around on his youngest son’s skateboard… and landing flat on his back. He always had back issues, and this didn’t help matters. Despite this, he was a trooper and was rolled around both Disney and the Space center with very little by way of complaint. (I wonder what happened to my plastic shuttle with “real working cargo bay doors” that I got there?) Friends of his were: Greg at the Auto Shop (Drinking Buddy), Brother in law Bob (His sister’s Husband, about 10 years his junior), Assorted Business contacts. Fond of Watching Documentaries on TV, especially Jacques Cousteau and WWII / Korea / ‘Nam stuff. Slowed down hunting about this time, but still went fishing regularly with Bob and his sons. Cooking Methods preferred are the Charcoal Grill, or Gas if he was in a hurry. Fast food was generally pub or local fare… french fries and a burger. Preferred to Watch TV on the couch, but to read outdoors. Had the kids do yard work and wash the car – sometimes followed up with the trimmer or a wax job himself. Enjoyed Fast Cars, and driving them at speeds not permitted by law. Lost his spleen in an automobile accident when he was 18, and never did learn his lesson. Alcoholic Beverage of Choice was a Budweiser. Smoked an occasional pipe of tobacco, ceased to smoke cigarettes, but occasionally rolled a joint. Kept about $5,000 on hand in $100 bills in a fireproof strongbox in the closet, along with his stash. The box’s lock was easily picked with a paperclip.

Some of his Strengths: Brilliant at math, History, and how things are put together, strong sense of fun and horseplay. Would walk into a pool of lava without complaining if it was for his kids. Charming, knew how to sell. Excellent at debate. Knew how to box, and how to fight dirty. A lot of upper body strength. Good teacher.

Some of his Weaknesses: Liked the Beer quite a bit, stubborn as a mule, no depth perception, sometimes a little hard of hearing (TV up *VERY* loud), Easily goaded into combat, either verbal or physical – though he rarely threw the first punch. Ruthless, and bloodthirsty when angered. Impatient if he had to repeat himself more than once. (Due to his being hard of hearing, everyone had to repeat themselves to him frequently.)

Random Celebrity Factoid: used to spar and box with Marvin Hagler at the YMCA, back in Brockton, MA in the Petronelli brothers gym, and they’d have coffee and Doughnuts afterward at the Mister Donut. This was about 1969-1970.

A comparison –

Scotto at 38: – 2007 – Happily starting the second year of his marriage, living in Maryland and working around Washington DC area. Wonderful Wife, 2 cool kitties, aged 4 and 8. (Favorite movie in ’83 was Wargames, even more than Return of The Jedi.) Favorite movie this year – Possibly Hot Fuzz, or maybe Meet The Robinsons in 3D… unless I’m forgetting something. Works as a the Manager/Director of IT at a Trade Association involving the freight industry. Financially is recovering pretty well from a move and going into a new career. Living in a 2-bedroom (3, if you count the office), 2 bath home in North Beach, MD – a “bedroom community” of DC’s. His family has one car, but that works pretty well, considering that he commutes by bus and train back and forth to work. Weekends are spent relaxing, doing some chores, and going on walkabout / drive-about with his wife, Both happily joined at the hip. This past years vacation was really his honeymoon trip along the East coast through a few Ripley’s Believe it or Not locations, including, but not limited to Myrtle Beach through St. Augustine. Saw his first snow in over 20 years a few months ago. Still doesn’t drive a vehicle, though DC traffic doesn’t look to be as bad as Miami’s. Recently Reconnected to A few High school cronies, but hasn’t kept up too well with them, or with his ex-coworkers in Florida. Current up-close and personal friends (i.e., talk on the phone at least every other week, or visit in person) are Danny (old time gaming buddy, lives in FL), in-laws Larry & Chris (Live about 5 minutes away, and are always game to visit and hang out), and of course the aforementioned BHK and the kitties as wonderful loves, lights and companions. Doesn’t do much outside the office with current coworkers – everyone seems to have their own life going on. Fond of watching science fiction / docu-science cooking shows / some sideways action-sit-coms like The Office, Chuck, Ugly Betty and so on. Cooking methods preferred are Grilling outside, or enjoying his wife’s masterpieces. Fast food is ok now and then, but as a vegetarian, prefers dining out on Mexican, Chinese or Italian food to most other fare. Has had back surgery twice, second time was to repair scar tissue from the prior. Herniated disks in the back, had an nerve damage down and along the left leg. Non-smoker, doesn’t do any recreational drugs. Alcoholic beverage of choice right now is Strongbow Cider, though woodchuck is good, too. Doesn’t keep large sums of money on his person or in the house… ATMs and bank cards work just fine for now.

Some of His Strengths: Attacks problems from a different perspective than usual, excellent with children and animals, willing to compromise on most disagreements where it is fair, strong sense of rhythm and beat, can be very sympathetic to people / animals in need of help. Courteous. Good at debate. Reliable. Knows how to fight, if need be. Protective of loved ones.

Some of his Weaknesses: Can be moody when overtired or sick, prone to sentimentality but mercy is wildly variable depending on the situation, aggressively dislikes “practical jokes” or pop-up surprises. Memory is sometimes poor if items aren’t written down. Poor runner – especially now with the back/leg issues. Messy housekeeper.

Random Celebrity Factoid: Once met Bill Daily (friend of an old employer) – nice guy, laid back, I was stunned that he was as old as he is… (mostly because before then, I’d only seen him in TV reruns). We chatted about radio stuff, primarily.

Got my last filling (and the broken filling repaired) last night – On our way home, The ATW man had shed his Spidey Costume, and is now preparing for winter! BHK thought he was killing a turkey, but it turns out that he’s just chopping some wood.

Full size is the best way to catch any detail. I rather like the amorphous white blob the light makes… I pretend it’s The Man’s alien friend, blinky.

1119072041.jpg

Since he didn’t numb me very effectively, the anesthetic wore off in under 20 minutes. I was able to enjoy a little stuffed crust pie… and a few quepapas (tasty glorified tater tots) for a lead-in.

I’m about done with Penguin Soccer… it just doesn’t stand up to 4-player, and 2-playerwise… I think that the novelty has worn off. Even with a few tweaks, it just needs more work. I’m leaning more towards Binary Homeworlds and Martian Chess as far as icehouse / pyramid games of choice stand out. A few games of Zamboni Wars might bump that into the running, too.

Game design on Pumpkin has come to a standstill… I need to pick up the pen and get back on working the crimps out of a few sticky elements. (Not to Mention Giants and Dwarfs / Brier Patch )

For a lot of Playable games (and more than a few not-so-playable ones) , icehouse.org is still pretty handy. I’m not doing the competition this winter, as I prefer to try and design a good game first, and then worry about what pieces are needed – rather than the other way around. Heck, you can play Martian chess with pennies, nickels and quarters if you wanted to.

Homeworlds seems a lot simpler to play in person than on superdupergames, but it is nice having the hard-coded rules keeping track of what can and can’t be done.

BHK made a tasty cake for the gang’s thanksgiving at work… orange cake with a cranberry drizzle on top. Yummy… vaguely reminded me of fruit loops.

Newton and Pyewacket are getting to be quite the little chums… perhaps it’s due to the colder weather, but they’re downright affectionate with one another these days. Newt lovingly headbutted Pye the other night – that’s something totally unanticipated.

Kindle looks nifty, but $400 is way too much to spend. I’d probably totally snag it for $200, so maybe next year. I’ll be very interested to see where the next version of the technology goes… but it’d be worth it for just free rss reading and wikipedia on the fly, along with whatever books I put on there myself. Throw in some basic PDA functionality, and you’ve got me, but good. EV-DO could work wonders, too. It reads prc files, so all of my palm ebooks would be just fine, too.

Two interesting links, especially for around thanksgiving – Sent to me by BHK Both give food to the needy by asking for a story from you or just improving your vocabulary.

9064 – sat

In a nutshell –

Slept in a little, but we made it for my allergy shots by 10am.

After the obligatory injections, a quit stop at starbucks for a lackluster peppermint latte – we won’t go back there again. The Giant across the street has a starbucks inside, and if I’m going to pay $5 for a coffee, I’ll get one that’s excellent – not that poorly assembled mess I had for breakfast. The sugar cookie was ok… I think the fac tthat it was shaped like a penguin added flavor.

Headed out to Maerten’s – went to look at BHK’s ring lemon quartz in white gold… sort of our own lime-vanilla ice. The staff there was very kind and helpful; Jamie in particular had more than a few good ideas about setting the stone and we’ll be meeting for sketches soon. I’m glad we could find a place that we like and trust so much to do what we want.

went to Aardvark – picked up a few fun little items to fool with in the days and years ahead.

Easter Island (I love the game pieces ) Reminds me more than a little of Laser Battle, but with added nifty bits here and there.

This game speculates that the easter island statues were, in fact, beam weapons created by two very powerful wizards. These wizards used the statues in a giant game, with the island itself as the board. You are now one of those wizards…

Easter Island lets you place your statues and move them into position. Then, when everything is ready, call upon the power of the Sun to topple your opponent’s statues and thus your opponent.

If fishes were wishes – again, the game pieces are cute.

“Players are fishermen, trying to catch the most valuable fish and sell them in the market for the best prices. With limited space for storing caught fish, players must use their wits to get the right fish to market at the right times. This is where the granting of wishes is most helpful. Just catch the fish who will grant the wish you want, throw it back, and you get your wish. Sounds simple, but the game does require a bit of thinking and planning. The wishes can help you increase the value of fish when sold, grant you extra storage space, and several other useful things.”

Spree – Shopping, gunfire and violence. How could I resist a Cheapass Game we didn’t already have?

“Springtime. Midnight. The Mall is beckoning.

Welcome to LeGrand Mall, the oldest and most poorly secured indoor mall in the world. It’s as airtight as the Titanic and as solid as a wet paper bag. This place just begs to be robbed.

Enter you, and your infantile collection of friends. It’s not enough to simply loot this mall. No, you have to do it with a certain amount of flair. Which boils down to an all-night looting race, with shopping carts, flashlights, and guns.

The object? Park your car, dash into the mall, and load your shopping cart with the goodies on your list. You can snitch stuff out of the stores if you like, but it’s even more fun (and easier) to steal it from your friends. And that would explain why you’re carrying a huge gun.”

– includes a variant of “a bunch of extra violence we’ve never tested”, such Running People Over.

In addition to our normal game purchases… BHK convinced me (with very little arm-twisting) to pick up some comics – all miniseries at the moment.

Current story lines about –

Started getting hungry and went on a quest for a Pizza Hut… Stuffed Crust pie, in particular. When all we could locate were take-out places, we chanced upon the Do Dah Deli. Good find. BHK had a foot-long corn dog and shared pinwheel fries with me – I had a build your own sammich…. I just went with an assortment of cheeses, sprouts and veggies with honey mustard. It was all quite tasty, though there was a mix-up with our order. Easily fixed, and no worries.

Side Track Hobbies – I think we’ve found a place to fill Larry (and my own) Model train needs. The place looks tiny from the outside, but once you’re in there, it’s warehouse-level storage of all sorts of stuff, from z-scale on up to big ol’ yard stuff. The Marklin Selection was really quite nice. I wish I’d had access to this kind of loot when I was tabletop gaming… I bet Danny’d have a field day with dioramas.

Lastly, we hit the Children’s Bookstore next door. We got more than a little bit of Christmas Shopping done there.. not all for kids, either. Bugah and Em were the highlights, however. Once the lady running the place found out that I did computer stuff and having a little discussion of her fondness of Mac over PC (I feel it’s a religious discussion… only seldom to people get converted one way or the other) – I showed her how to upgrade both her MacBook and PC workstation’s software. She was an older lady, maybe in her early 80’s, but was very vital and possessed of strong opinoins and beliefs.

Comments of note from her included commentary on Univeristy of Maryland / Virginia Tech teachers from the 1950s, fairy dolls, and her firm beliefs about Macs vs PCs. However her most memorable comment to me was – “Pomonkey indians are in a terrible state, especially since they started intermarrying with colored folks”.

(In early Colonial days, Pomonkey was known as “Pomonkey Indian Land,” for it was heavily populated by “Pomonceaks” as John Smith called them on his map of 1608. Pomonkey is a plateau of land surrounded by the Great Mattawoman Swamp. The Indians had followed many trails from every point in Southern Maryland for the rich hunting and fishing in Pomonkey. These converging trails became roads for the European settlers. Hence, Pomonkey very early became a site of local commerce.)

A slight Soda-spill later, and we headed on home, with a brief stopover at the in-laws. We caught up with My name is earl, and then hit the sack.

Not a bad day, all in all.

Supper at La Tolteca tonight… not so great. Flavorless beans, lackluster chips and salsa… enchiladas were blah. The Potato & Onion Burrito was pretty good, as were the spinach-veggie thingies, but it was a no go. The decor of Meso-American Indians performing sacrifices had far more flavor than the food.

Started while I wait for my ride home from the Allergist – In honor of it being the tenth –

Ten Things I really like:

1. Road Trips / Walkabouts. (especially with BHK) – It’s always fun to explore and discover new places… or even new things about a place you’ve visited a hundred times before. Additionally, the journey is often more fun than the destination. Grab a bagel, and out for a new adventure!

2. Almost the opposite of #1 – Lounging around the house, not leaving all day long. Having a headquarters full of love, entertainment, food and climate control is pretty dang appealing.

3. Change of seasons – I love, love, love seeing the Yellow-Green Spring change to Dark Green Summer to all of the Autumn colors… only to have the trees go bare and then start again. Snow is fantastic… I see just enough to want more, but not so much that it’s a peril or a nuisance.

4. Rain / Snow / Fog – Precipitation. Rain generally means that things are cooling off, being fed, getting life. (I suspect that video will be fodder for BHK in her “we should get some ducks” argument.) I’ve long preferred traveling in a mist or fog, especially on a hike. I enjoy a traditional “nice day“, too. Let’s just say I like most weather – anything that doesn’t kill me or make me sweat too much is good in my book.

5. monkeys and robots almost equally… Monkeys have a higher spiffy factor due to the biological aspect, I think. Emotion, awe, chaos are all pretty amazing stuff. That said, streamlined new-style and old school aluminum robots alike are pretty keen, even the unfriendly ones that want to destroy we humans for being a fleshy parasite on the surface of the globe.

6. Learning new things – That was really the other third of gaming that I enjoyed quite a lot – along with the social side, and imagination stretching. I love to learn new bits of things, from reading or a live good teacher, preferably. Wiki / Google is a good start, but I’ve found that developing skills from a more interactive knowledge source speeds things along for me. Example – How to make country-style “cat head” (called so based on size and relative shape, not ingredients) biscuits this weekend from Larry.

7. My new family unit. Duh. BHK, Pye and Newt make every day one with elements of love, affection and care. Extended family is also nice – I dig my in-laws quite a bit. Both are people I can learn and grow with in a very positive way.

8. Playing Games. Boardgames, Role playing games, video games… trifles that promote both social and brain activity are something to embrace. I don’t like solitaire games so much… seems to lack something. Even Video games are better if you’re playing them with a human cooperative or competitor-type next to you, or on-line somewhere. Even in those cases, a LAN party in the same room works better for me… however, the upside of on-line play is you can cut connection any time you like, and play in your jammies… (well, you can do that in person, too – depending.) The social aspect has to be with people I enjoy being around… I can’t get into gaming just for gaming’s sake.

9. Kind people. Folks that go out of their way to be respectful and helpful while not being a doormat. I’ve been really blessed to know and have known a huge number of terrific people… more than I suspect is average. Surrounding yourself with good folks is a fun way to learn about being kind yourself. Hanging out with an assortment of geeks, hippies, gamers and just general fans of being nice has helped me to become a better person, I think.

10. Helping others (see #9, above). I really like to do good works. I’m long overdue to donate some blood… one of the easiest acts of charity I can perform. I feel good when I believe that I’ve done something to make someone’s life better. I try to offer a kind word or make at least a simple gesture whenever I can. I get immediate feedback for it, even if the person isn’t grateful… how they react isn’t as big a deal as is the process involved for me.

Skipped the jacket on the commute to and from work today – 55-65F isn’t too bad with a long sleeved shirt. Once we hit 40, I’m all about the windbreaker and more.

Today is my momster’s 60th birthday. It’s funny… it seems like she should be both older and younger than that. I guess it averages out. My grandmother (her mom) just turned 85, and my bro just turned 35. 25 year split on them makes it easy for me to track the ages.

BHK and I are going to celebrate tomorrow (as it’s a bit late tonight)
by playing some Zombie Fluxx and Killer Bunnies !

I dig today’s WOD –

macaronic (mak-ah-RON-ik) adjective

Involving a mixture of languages.

[From Latin macaronicus, from Italian dialect maccarone (macaroni), probably alluding to the jumble of macaroni and sauce on a plate.]

Halloween Backdrop is down from the website… I really need to spend a few moments and do a less dark redesign. Something that’s still organic, and cavelike, but more daytime, cheerful. The Sea cave concept and petroglyphs still come to mind. Maybe once time is a bit less tight.

We never did make it to Aardvark to pick up our Zombie Fluxx! We’ll have to do that sometime this week – must get it before Halloween! (only 10 more days!)

We have started eating the treats from our Halloween “Advent Calender” – counts down from 13 days. so far we’ve had two gummi eyeballs and a gummi skull.

Rather than journey south to Solomon’s, BHK and I headed out to another corn maze at greenstreet gardens. Had a haunted hayride through the back 40 to the cornfield – I think the hayride was scarier than the corn…. mostly due to the bone-jarring bumps and slides around the road in an unsecured wagon!

Bugah got Mario Strikers… we may have to get a copy, to play with him online. Probably rent it first, to make sure it isn’t a bum title, but the reviews are generally good.

Speaking of Mario, BHK and I thought it’d be fun to have Super Mario Brothers on the wii… 500 points later, there we go. She’s more skilled than I am – but I’m catching up. I hadn’t played it for about 15-18 years, while she has fairly recently.

more pictures as the uploader works – most are from homestead gardens harvest festival and store. I dig the hillbilly skeleton band. Darth Vader nutcracker for christmas? kind of keen.

BHK got me a Wii for our anniversary! I spotted it pretty much as soon as I sat down in the living room.
My Wii Code is 2667 2084 2657 3823. Get your own WiiBadge at WiiBadge.com!
Our online Number is 2667-2084-2657-3823 if any Wii peeps would like to add us.  Leave your wii number in the comments if you’d like me to add you!

Now I just have to find a game to play online with Bugah, since it seems the sports game that comes with it doesn’t go online multi-player. So far, I’m very good at baseball – terrible at tennis. BHK is excellent at bowling.

Also via BHK – PSA –Dogs in Danger – Stuff like this breaks my heart. (Dogs in Danger is a nonprofit national shelter outreach program at the forefront of a grassroots movement trying to help shelters save the lives of millions of innocent dogs.) I honestly can’t stay on that page very long – it makes me too sad.

Happy Birthday, Peradouro!

I had no idea that Batroc the leaper was a play on Batrachia, – I feel like a bit more of a copy cat with my old super “Grenouille” now.

Speaking of Marvel – Beaucoupkev‘s got me wanting to pick up a used copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance now.

It’s got MODOK for corn sakes. I can only hope it also has Arnim Zola.

Zombie Fluxx will be waiting for us by Thursday! (And Aardvark has a demo pack coming, too! Hooray for spreading the fun around in the store!)

Transformers is out on DVD today – we’ll add it to the Netflix queue – even if it’s terrible, I’d like to check it out. I make a lousy robot.
but BHK’s cracks me up.

When people walk with change jingling in their pockets, I imagine that they’re wearing spurs.

Local Gamers are into Autoduel? I may need to investigate this further. BHK and I could spend some time getting up to speed, and maybe play some pyramid games soon, too.

chilly morning – waiting at the train station for my shuttle to arrive saw me trying to blow smoke rings with just hot breath. I couldn’t do it – not sure if it can be done… but it is fun watching steam flow slowly from your nostrils. You can pretend to be Fin Fang Foom, spraying acidic mist at imaginary foes.

Dinner was nice, but I had very little appetite – wrote my brother a letter, gently asking him not to stay in Broward county, but instead to try starting his life fresh in points north – maybe Tampa. A toxic “support system” awaits if he returns to Hollywood and its environs.

BHK pointed out to me that you can buy mp3 songs on Amazon now – with no itunes restrictions, for $.10 less per song than iTunes. It’s about time, and I’m all for non-proprietary formats or RIAA controls.

No Zombie Fluxx yet! ack! We’ll be picking it up next weekend, hopefully. I’d like to have it in time for Halloween!

Went grocery shopping and then to get a Wii, but they were sold out – I nearly picked up a copy of Portal to tide me over, and may next time if the Wii isn’t in stock- I hadn’t seen any portal reviews on the new Orange box (Half-Life2 Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 (multi player), and Portal, plus previous releases of HL2 and HL2:episode one) I think it’ll be worth picking up, possibly just for portal alone – TF2 looks pretty fun as well – I really like the “Incredibles meets First Person Shooter” school of art. I’ll likely download it from Steam rather than pay for it at Target, unless the price is significantly different.

Post-shopping, we swung by the in-laws to watch The Natural with them and Louise. Not a bad movie… not as good as I remembered it, but maybe I was tired, too.

We went home, went up to our “treehouse” for a late supper of leftover Chinese food for me, and fresh cheddar on whole wheat crackers for BHK – watched the first episode of Journeyman – slow rolling but got better at the end. Quantum Leap redux – seemingly uncontrolled time travel, following a person to set things right, can bring items back and forth through time. He also seems to return to his home time, unlike Sam.

We also watched the Simpsons – corn maze / police dog episode. Poor to fair writing. I think the best part of the treehouse is just curling up with BHK and the boys for solid snuggles and comfort – especially nice at the end of the day.

It’s a good thing I gobbled up what I did – our fridge is now officially *full*. I don’t think anything else could be put in there, without knocking something over.

I wish I had Plastic Man or Mr. Fantastic’s stretchy abilities… I really don’t like running up and down stairs to the treehouse with stuff or just to see what’s going on once I’m settled in and comfy.

Went to Game night yesterday at the Clampets – met some nice folks and chitty chatted… didn’t do a lot of gaming.

A pair of CPAs, Clare- a Teacher of chemistry at the Naval academy, a network cable guy (Eric) in addition to Brent (travel agent), Alison (Pampered Chef Home sales), Nick (not sure what he does) A pretty fascinating study in “nice people who don’t share any of my opinions on things”. A pretty conservative, heavily church-going bunch, but very kind and tolerant. I think that Amy would like Nick, and that Kev would really dig Clare, if I was of a match-making bent. The game we played was a “get to know you” sort of thing, where you have cards, and try to figure out what a person say if asked questions like “Where’d you last get groceries” / “How often do you Vacuum a month” / “How many Piercings do you Have” / “Favorite Politician”.

It was a little shocking to me to hear otherwise similar to myself types say that they thought George Bush was their favorite politician, without a shred of sarcasm or irony. I’ll do better to pretend I’m in bizarro-world next time I make my guesses.

Picked up lots of goodies for Bugah and Em for the co-birthday celebration next weekend – Em got Moon Sand, Aqua Dots and a little robot-kitten – Bugah got a Wave-style skateboard, and a 4-up Nerf rocket launcher. I think that they’ll be pleased. Plus, I want to play with the Moon Sand and Nerf Gun. BHK picked up some glow in the dark filler Aqua Dots too, so I imagine she’ll be “helping” Em make some neat designs as well.

Tonight, we did a more game-oriented game night (One long game of Apples to Apples, and a quick game of Aquarius – Chris won both!) with the in-laws and Louise, after Pizza and watching When Harry Met Sally and a Carol Burnett show blooper reel/retrospective. Strange that there was no mention of Lyle Waggoner.

Lore found this listing of sources for D&D… I remember when the books listed were in the back of the old DM guide. The detail makes a fun trivia read.

example –

A lychgate is an entrance to a churchyard where a body rests before burial–”lych” means person or dead body (From German “Leiche”, meaning “dead body, cadaver, corpse”). The D&D lich is very similar to a character from Taran Wanderer, by Lloyd Alexander, a magician with an unnaturally-extended life who can only die if the item he has stored his soul in is broken (in this case, a bone from his little finger); however, the term “lich” is never used in the book. The origin of both the D&D lich and Alexander’s character is probably the Russian folkloric character “Kotshchey the Deathless”, also an unnaturally long-lived magician (or demon) who was almost impossible to kill.

125 things about scottobear, continued –

047. Brent, Steve and I really liked to go to Passport pizza in front of the Boynton Beach mall – specialized in “regional-style” pies. German was sausage and kraut, with caraway seeds… Mexican was spicy beef, cheese and onions… first time I’d ever had a Hawaiian pizza – green pepper, pineapple and ham. I did a quick google search, and there’s still one in Boca raton… I wonder if it’s the same people?

048. The was an Ice Cream shop right next door to Congress Middle School – run by some really nice guys, and it was a good stopping off point to play a game of gold bug (a dig dug knockoff), or work on D&D characters while eating a rocky road scoop on a sugar cone.

049. first job with an actual paycheck was at a Taco Viva in the same Boynton Beach Mall, where I poured beer at age 16, and left latex gloves for food prep filled with el scorcho sauce in the freezer. Layout of the old Taco Viva and a Sample storefront. both are identical to the one I worked at.

050. While the mall was being built (1984 or so) – Steve, Brent, and I explored it constantly. A great spot to play laser tag. Imagine a whole set of mall-walls, sand and cover available to 15 year olds! layout is here, but you can’t see all the hidden back alleys and service points that made it wonderfully fun and probably quite dangerous to play in. I think the biggest game we had out there was maybe 10 men to a side.

051. hates deadlines. yucko.

052. is very thankful for his life and family in the here and now.

053. is a terrible chess player, though he loves games (too busy being social to focus, I think)

Friday 5 –

1. What’s your favorite cereal?

Variable… I’m digging Cinnamon Life right now, though.

2. What is too gross to eat in the morning?

Well… human eyeballs are too gross to eat at anytime… but first thing in the morning is pretty ok… I could eat a boca burger and a beer if I was hungry enough. I don’t really have a set time for certain foods.

3. What time do you go to bed?

Usually about 11pm

4. Where do you put your keys?

Front left pocket, or on a neck lanyard.

5. What vegetables do you love?

I like the starchy-yummy ones, like potatoes, sweet peas, and corn. Also dig broccoli, green beans and spinach more than a bit.

Cathy and Dave over tonight for Lasagna, conversation (they’re moving to Colorado once the house is sold) and a couple of games of apples to apples. BHK swept the night by winning both games, despite Cathy’s extending the winning conditions from 8 to 10, and then 12 cards on the 2nd game.

Current meme thingie –

Comment on this post. If you’re interested, I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.

Christin picked – animal rights, exotic cuisine, horror, libraries, pyewacket, roadside attractions, vikings

  • animal rights – Critters have been a pet project for me for as long as I can remember. Something just feels fundamentally wrong when folks don’t hurting something – why not, if it’s only a “stupid animal”. I’ve been around a number of creatures that are more than just food or clothing, and would prefer that they be neither in a perfect world. I understand that it isn’t a perfect world… but I try to treat critters well.

  • exotic cuisine – I like new foods and flavors… it seems like every place has a different idea about what is tasty and what flavors work well together. I’ve developed a special fondness for some of the more commonly available ethnic foods… Thai, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, Ethiopian, German, Italian all bring something spiffy to the table both in traditional and Americanized forms. Nothing that walks on more than one foot, or less than six to eat, though… thanks.

  • horror – I enjoy the genre. More in literature than in film lately, though I can get into a scary movie here and there. Some of the best books I know shine a light at odd angles on stuff that lurks in my imagination, making the shadows large and frightening.

  • libraries – worked in one the better part of high school and college. great places, lots to see and do – plus there are books out the wazoo. I have many fond memories from the library. It’s where I first gamed, back in 6th grade.

  • Pyewacket – he got his name from bell, book and candle (which in turn got it from this Pyewacket) – He’s the baby of our family, 4ish to Newton’s 7ish years old. He’s very laid back, and when you pick him up, you can cradle him like an infant. He’s been a wonderful addition to my family, and I love him dearly.

  • roadside attractions – BHK and I stopped at a number of Ripley’s Believe it or Not locations on the side of the road during our honeymoon, and there’s something equally fascinating to me about oddball bits of Americana… Urban Ruin plus Muffler Men = wonder to my mind. Weird water towers, tourist traps and whatnot. The chintz factor bleeds over a little bit into horror for me, too. Best place for a zombie uprising is an old mini golf course. See also recent entries on the ATW man, or http://www.lostamerica.com/roadside.html

  • vikings – Some people favor pirates… I lean to the more Norse cousins… the romanticized version, of course… sailing to new worlds in ships with serpent heads, burying an axe in your oath-breaking cousin, casting runes and thinking about times when the world was a still cooling body of a giant. What’s not to like? The Norse Eddas are some of my favorite old stories.
