Waving the flag.

If you don’t like it in the US… and you currently live here, here’s another freedom open to you.

Leave. Hit the fricking road. Take a bite of a reality sandwich. See what life is like elsewhere.

Go Live in China for a year, see how wonderful life is there. Go to Afghanistan, and tell them you’re an American, and see how well you get by telling them that you renounce our ways. Heck, spend some time in Germany or England, and try to get ahold of some of the “wrong” kind of literature.

I celebrate your freedom to an opinion, though I may deplore your ignorance and willful stupidity. I’d appreciate it if you thought before you started bitching about the way things are here. Vote, gather a petition, organize peaceably. If you have a problem, you can write your congressman, your local newspaper. Lay out exactly what your problems are, find folks of a similar mind, and do something about it.

Seriously. If you have a problem with the way things are here, at least you can make a difference. For such a young country, I think we’ve on the whole done a lot more good than bad. I think we’ve contributed far more positively than negatively to culture, society, technology and medicine than any other country on the planet for the last 200 years. This place is still a land of innovation and exceptional tolerance, especially compared to the entirety of the globe.

US life is probably some of the highest quality of life you can find, and that’s coming from someone who’s been homeless. There are problems with every system, but I feel that the one we have in place now is the best available. With the help of my nation and her citizens, I’m able to eat, sleep indoors, in a bed, love who I choose, travel freely, buy whatever books I like, work at a competitive wage, and help folks that don’t have it so well to get back on their feet.

Tell me that you think we deserve most of the hate that we get, because of the country we live in… well… I’m sorry, but you’re a fucking idiot.

weeping cherry tree
Made a new icon today, for tales of travelling and general outings.

Today has been gentle… took it off from work, and it has been a lovely day to do so. Soft rains coming down, comfortable atmosphere… poring over these old letters are fun.. contained in a small leather packet, there are some that have ben partially lost due to folding, or having been written in pencil, years ago.

My beloved gifted me with a poem that she wrote last night…from beauty comes beauty… like flame begetting flame. I’m still delighted, and have had warm fuzzies all day long because of it.

Reflecting on all the good things today… I’m really surrounded by so many blessings…I’m well fed, shod, loved, and loving. I have a job that helps to provide for my financial needs… disease free, literate and on the whole quite healthy. My only complaints are trivial, developmental or philosophical… I’m quite comfortable where I am now, and things are getting better daily.

I’ve reaffirmed something to myself recently…this is my journal, not one that belongs to anyone else on my friend’s list. Folks are welcome to come and go, and post what they please, as long as they keep a civil tongue… and if they are critical, they keep a civil, constructive tongue in their head. I’m quite happy with my new policy of “the people I read are like magazines (with a few exceptions)…I’m more than happy to cancel a subscription at any time, with no obligation”.

according to http://www.livejournal.com/stats.bml There are over 300,000 journals in here now, with about 1/4 of that updating at least once a week. I can hardly keep up with the 80 on my list now…I wonder how many excellent, intelligent writers out there I’m missing? (I can only guess at how many not so excellent, not-so-intelligent ones I’m missing… the random journal feature for me is officially marked lemon now. Interests seems to be the search feature of choice for me now.

the avalanche has started, it’s too late for the pebble to vote.

My title is now….

Headmaster of Precast Concrete Solutions and Cheesy Comestible-like Things,
Padishah of Kicking Oprah’s Ass and Wee Ceramic Kittens,
Khan of Rhinoceroseseses
Bishop of Triangle Theorems,
Earl of Smurfs,
Deacon of Thick Candy Shells,
The Great Winged Goat Person of The Left Side of Latter Day Saints,
Scrum-Diddly Paladin of The Flobee Hair Suction System, Scott “Band-Aid” O’Bear, the Fourty-Second

get yours here… thanks for the link!

I wonder how many folks thought I would break my streak of posting today?

Probably nobody. 🙂

psychosomatic. That boy needs therapy.

I trimmed my list. (And sent off appropriate notes to those that I felt obliged to remove, for one reason or another.) It’s sad, because I really liked those folks, but *TIME AND TIME AGAIN* there’s involvement with a LJ drama. That seems counterproductive. This whole “you’re friends with X, so you can’t be friends with Y” nonsense is right out of grade 2. So, forget it. I’m sure I’ll be adding some back later (If they’ll have me). but for now, I’m just not dealing with it. Lakme pulled that silly stuff with folks I liked reading last time around. I still sometimes wonder if she ever confessed in her journal to her colossal mistake, and character assassination. I figure the current hot air will stop blowing in a few days…. but it seems its the same group of people every time. I wonder if a more permanent decision isn’t more reasonable. A shame so many of them are so likeable. A couple of rotten apples wreck the party for everyone…(If I’m allowed to mix cliche & metaphor… it’s my journal. I’ll say yeah.)

I love livejournal’s features, when they work. 🙂

private entries, backdating, searching on interests… all wonderful. I look quite forward to the return of location indexes, and last posted information, as well as a nice full text search.

fixer upper update, from here – http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?itemid=9601466&nc=115

The more controversial thing is that we’re probably going to limit the number of posts/day and comments/post for free users. We have to decide between the lesser of the evils — limits or having a site that always appears to suck.[1]

I already mentioned this in paidmembers, but one db slave is now doing nothing but paid user traffic, and it’s totally caught up… there should be no lagging if you’re logged in.

[1] Update: Relax, everybody … we’re not “cutting off” free users. Stop freaking out … we understand why LJ is a successful community (we made it, afterall) and we’re not going to do anything to bastardize it. Any “limits” we impose will be reasonable… we always collect stats before imposing limits such that 90% or so of people remain unaffected. The limits we’re talking about here are temporary ones, to ease the free db servers until the new ones arrive on the 1st

info on what’s been up, and lj general information about what’s being done. … all very informative. I wonder how many free days Brad’s given to paid memeber total, now? 🙂

paid folks, click on the link, inthere, and you’ll get 10 days added to your paid time.

*plus*

turned off new account creation yesterday to stop growth while they worked on things. that should hlep a lot.

user #3397 – we now get about 2100 new users every *day*

LJ has a different feel now… I wonder if it’s the difference between a small village and a big city. I can remember wayyy back when it was new to me, and I was just looking for a place to link to my web page, and keep an ongoing journal of my thoughts online. ( directed me here after looking at her site. I’m glad I went… that was the only reason I went with LJ, as it was the first one I’d heard of that was comfortable. Blogger at that time was still sticky, and LJ had a spiffier client, plus a build in friends and comments feature.) I miss a few of the features that have been (temporarily, I hope!) sacrificed to allow for more growth, like seeing where a person has recently posted, the regional search engine, etc… it was nice to peek around and see who in your neighborhood was posting. I think you could break it down by age, too… nice to see (forgive my ageist ways) folks 19 and up in my zone, who have gaming as an interest…it’d make organizing a group very simple.

I’d love for the gp search engine and picture host to come online soon, preferably after they get the machinery to work properly again. all the weirdness is floating out at http://www.scottobear.com/lj/ right now, unindexed, just hovering. it’s begun to add up, over the year+ of entries… and I really don’t put as many pictures in as some folks do.

my first LJ icon

you know who you are. :)

Paid members errors!? Why!? Even though there is a dedicated web server and a dedicated database server for paid members, it is just a dedicated slave server. Both sides have to still share the master database. The devs have been hacking away all night and all day to move code from hitting the master DB to the slaves. They’re mostly done, but this message will probably pop up anyway.
Remember:Reload less, it will work more often.

If you’re having way too much trouble with livejournal…

opendiary.com seems to be working fine too, and the friends feature on there is pretty neat. same disads as LJ, no java or shockwave embeds… but most of you guys don’t mind that. they have a decent calendar, random, and also have a nifty ‘theme’ and ‘circles’ features that IU’d liek to see implemented here.

you can look at mine, here… but I’m thinking that my backup is deadjournal, then opendiary.com, then blogger.

(I have alterior motives…if all the folks that complain leave, the servers will work again for me! )
