9584 – Saturday

Well, the stars were out of alignment this morning – 7 degrees to start, and the ground was frozen an inch thick.

BHK and I slept in a bit, and then I hopped into the shower, to get ready for my appointment at the MVA to get my license – turned on the water and… nothing came out of the nozzle.

It turns out that water solidifies, or "freezes" at certain cold temperatures – sort of like those little cubes you put in drinks to cool lemonade on a hot day.

Water can also freeze in pipes, as well as cube trays, it seems. Lacking water, and the desire to rush to a neighbor or in-laws to bather properly, I opted to instead go another day – Tuesday might be good, given that I have the day off, an everyone will be in DC that day for the inauguration. If they’re open, I’ll visit. I know they’re closed on Monday – MLK day shuts it down.

The neighbors were helpful, offered a torch to melt the ice in the pipes, but we figured we’d wait it out and see.

The in-laws came over, and we assessed the situation – it turns out the water came back at about 11am – so BHK made pancakes for everyone, and I scrubbed up in the now-working shower.

After that, we went outside, and surrounded the drafty parts of the house, and pipe areas with insulation (that’s how I know the ground was frozen, and how deep). It seems that the bedroom is benefiting most, upping in temp a few degrees already.

After that, BHK, in-laws, and I watched The Namesake -I liked it a lot – after the in-laws left, BHK and I continued with the The Darjeeling Limited, also pretty good – (I still Prefer The Life Aquatic, but it’s a good second to that Anderson film)

Now, it’s time for bedski.

Happy Birthday to Kat (and 3 years of journaling!)

Today, I got my shots, and BHK visited the doc for chest pains-  turned out to be muscle-related… knot in her back radiated out to the rib area. Knot is fading considerably now, thankfully.

This afternoon, BHK and I finished Happiness of the Khatkuris, and The Dunwich horror – both were much better than I’d hoped, for totally different but similar reasons. "Bad" horror flicks, that were fun to watch, mostly because BHK was in the room with me while we lounged on the couch and ate chocolate cookies.

After the movie-fest, it was off to Selby with the in-laws – Not bad, but not the best – lots of new folks there – owners out, so the quality was a bit under par, but still good.

BHK got her big warm coat for our trip to Punxy – she’ll be toasty warm while we’re there now, I’ll wager.

Farewell, Christmas lights… North Beach is slowly taking them all down. All that remained this morning were the igloo, santa, a reindeer, and one lone tree, where there was once a dozen or so.

Our lights are off, but not yet down – maybe this weekend, the roof will get cleared.

Molecular Analysis Confirms Tyrannosaurus Rex’s Evolutionary Link To Birds

Putting more meat on the theory that dinosaurs’ closest living relatives are modern-day birds, molecular analysis of a shred of 68-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex protein — along with that of 21 modern species — confirms that dinosaurs share common ancestry with chickens, ostriches, and to a lesser extent, alligators.

9556 – Sunday

Newt and Pye have been together for 2 years now. They’ve blended well. They aren’t too aggressive with one another, though they do play rough.

Got an earache last night, I think it’s an infection via the crown. Contacted Dr. Wolf, we’ll see what he advises.

Went to the in-laws this morning (well, about noontime) for some Breakfast – Larry Poached some eggs, and grilled up some bacon, Chris made crab salad. All served on Xmas English muffins. (Do they call muffins something else in England, and "English muffins" just muffins?)

After eating, we watched Superhero move and I got a call from the Momster – our holiday goodies arrived in her mailbox yesterday. Superhero Movie was Basically a parody of Spider-man, plus a few cameos and Leslie Neilson nonsense.

Larry showed me how to make Preacher cookies – chocolate/oatmeal goodies, with no flour in ’em. Closer to Fudge than a cookie, really.

Good stuff – I’ve got to practice making these, I think… they’re easy, but are good eats.

BHK and I headed home early for some rest – watch some old Christmas episodes of night Court and Wings – I pretty much just Vegged out all weekend.

I’m looking forward to a nice long winter’s nap after Tuesday – Vacation (but on-call) from 12/24-01/04!

A few items need to be worked on – biggest ones are file comparing encryption, getting a slacker customer to get on the new system from the old (before the old shuts down totally)  and a system map of our network that is up to date.

Maybe a little vitamin B-12 will pick me up. Until later, dear journal!

Had a nice night tonight – Shaun came over, though Jay abstained, since Duncan was snoozing so comfortably.

Showed Shaun Fallout 3, and then He, BHK and I did a screening of Hellboy 2 while dining on pizza from a mix. Pizza was yummy – The movie however was not the best – sets and creature designs were nifty, but the story was pretty weak, and resolution was pretty feeble, given that the solution could’ve and should’ve ended in the first 2 minutes of the movie. The Corsican Brothers "ow, you hurt my twins" routine is more than a little played out.

I will confess to liking the "young hellboy" flashbacks, and the acrobatics – though the acting was weaker than the first one. Abe was phoning it in a bit.

Friday!

Date night! Where are we off to? Christmas Lights in Annapolis, I think. I’m looking forward to a nice weekend with BHK – it seem slong overdue.

I suspect that JJ Abrams will make it tough for me to interest BHK in the new star Trek movie. (She wasn’t too crazy about Cloverfield… or Lost. or Fringe… or.. ) For that matter, I gave up on Season 2 of Lost, episode 1 of Fringe, and Swarm of the Snakehead is more my idea of a fun monster movie than Cloverfield. – all of which fairly split me from most of the Science Fiction fans out there.

However, I still want to see the new trek, even if it is 90210 in outer space, with Winona Ryder, and Bana as a Romulan with a Scottish Accent. I think I’ve got her sold on the gal who plays uhura and the guy from Harold and kumar.

misc thoughts recently, most from today –

Scott is ready for date night!

Scott is impressed by sublimation. (It is a common experience to observe the disappearance of snow from the ground even though the temperature is below the freezing point and liquid water is never present.)

Scott believes that any tool is a weapon if you hold it right. (and vice versa).

Scott frequently prefers leftovers to the first time "put on the plate" food.

Scott loves working on the 11th floor. Snow is falling UP past my window.

Scott wouldn’t bother with silver bullets to fight werewolves. Silver buckshot, maybe.

oh, dear U-pop – how we miss you from our element. soon, you’ll be gone due to Christmas music taking your xm car slot… I hope you return after the holidays!

Saw Tropic Thunder tonight – it was better than it might’ve been, but I was fooled by previews, and didn’t get as good a show as expected. Jack Black and Ben Stiller didn’t do much for me, but I was impressed by ol’ Downey and Nolte. We had a nice Thursday night date, anyhow! BHK got her allotment of popcorn and I enjoyed a soft pretzel and some crunch bar bites.

An analysis of the three major types of gravestone motifs used in eastern Massachusetts during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The earliest of the three is a winged death’s head, with blank eyes and a grinning visage. Earlier versions are quite ornate, but as time passes, they become less elaborate. Sometime during the eighteenth century — the time varies according to location — the grim death’s head designs are replaced, more or less quickly, by winged cherubs. This design also goes through a gradual simplification of form with time. By the late 1700’s or early 1800’s, again depending on where you are observing, the cherubs are replaced by stones decorated with a willow tree overhanging a pedestaled urn.

Pay special attention to the graph of the popularity of each motif and the slideshow of example gravestones. (thx, peterme)

Sick right after lunch today – stomach cramps, vomiting and a bit of shakes afterward. I wish the bathroom at work was less centrally located.. I felt like I was broadcasting my problems to the whole office. Ah well… no helping that.

Watched season opener for Eureka last night and the start of Death at a Funeral. (spoilers on page – don’t read, unless you care to know.) Both were pretty standard fare for the genre, but entertaining nonetheless. Product placement in Eureka – interesting… I was surprised that we watched it last night -was rather expecting it to be a "see the whole season prerecorded after it’s ended" sort of thing. As for the movie, it’s always nice to see Peter Dinklage.

BHK made salad and queso for me, and had some left over chik-fil-a strips in hers… it smelled wonderful, and mine was delicious.

Roger Ebert is not a fan of 3-D movies.

Ask yourself this question: Have you ever watched a 2-D movie and wished it were in 3-D? Remember that boulder rolling behind Indiana Jones in “Raiders of the Lost Ark?” Better in 3-D? No, it would have been worse. Would have been a tragedy. The 3-D process is like a zombie, a vampire, or a 17-year cicada: seemingly dead, but crawling out alive after a lapse of years. We need a wooden stake.

Oh… BHK is going to disagree there!

You’ve been fantastic and I hope you enjoyed it. There is a point, is there a point to all of this? Let’s find a point. Is there a point to my act? I would say there is.

I have to.

The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it’s real because that’s how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly colored and it’s very loud and it’s fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, “hey – don’t worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride…”

And we… kill those people.

Ha ha

“Shut him up.”

“We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real.”

Just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn’t matter because: It’s just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defences each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

Worst Habit – I’m a bit of a clutter-bug, and often fail to pick up after myself. I’m trying to be better about it, though.

Every now and then, you may find yourself wondering: how many atoms of Jesus do you eat everyday?

In the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation, the eucharist actually becomes the blood and body of Jesus Christ. […] Transubstantiation means that eventually the earth’s entire biomass will be made out of Jesus.

Eventually = 4.91 billion years.

Dan sent us a pile of stuff after cleaning out his guest room. A boatload of books, a few dvd’s:Batman Begins, King Kong – the newest one, Quest for Fire, Razor’s Edge, Life aquatic – and a copy of Valley of the Mammoths – looks to be a good game, but he couldn’t play it at the school’s game/SciFi club due to some of the caroon cavemen having visible genitalia. (He offered to draw clothes on them with a sharpie, but the students prefer Catan and Aquarius anyway.

His loss is our gain!

To me, tabletop games are a form of entertainment; I play to play, not play to win. I prefer light games that are amusing in and of themselves, games that are pleasing to play and offer something besides the chance to earn victory. Sometimes I’m in the mood to sit back and watch math at work, sometimes I just want to push pawns around and chuck some dice, and sometimes I want to claw my way to the top of the heap. Abstracts, beer-and-pretzels, RPG, wargames… I’m not picky, so long as it’s a fun ride.

I just found out that x1650 is the bare minimum of game cards for the next generation of goodies coming out this year. I gout rid of the x1600 just in the nick of time, it seems! I don’t want anything to make it hard to run spore or fallout 3. (Or ghostbusters, when it someday comes out. )

Random Scotto factoid – I can chug soda or beer at an alarming rate. That is part of why I don’t drink beer with any regularity.. it takes more than one to even begin to quench my thirst.

I sorta-kinda want to live in a styrofoam dome home. (at least as a little place or cabin out in the wilderness somewhere as a second home.)

“Technology Review has up an article about Shapeways, a new online rapid-prototyping service that allows users to upload digital designs which are then printed on 3-D printers and shipped back. A spinoff from Philips Research, the service gives small businesses, designers, artists, and hobbyists access to prototyping tools that were once available only to the largest corporations. The fee for a typical printed object is $50-$150. Their video shows the steps behind the process.”

Oh boy… custom stuff never had it so good.

9372 – Saturday

Let’s see… What’d we do today? Stream of thought – more so than usual.

Started out late to get shots… but just as well… the doctor was late, too… and we’d have had to wait, regardless. I beat BHK at Yahtzee 2x, she got me once, while we hung out. “Good Boy Lollipop” of the day was Cherry Cola. Item of note – I think of the weekly lollipops I get from the doc… I may’ve eaten 3. The rest are in a bag… at this rate, we may have Halloween candy worked out… not that I’d unload tiny lollipops on trick or treaters. Actually, I’d like to bail on the trick or treaters this year, and take Allison on a ghost tour, or hit a Halloween party… or even stay in upstairs, and watch scary movies with all of our lights out.

Anyhow, back to today. After the doc, we had lunch at Mexico Restaurant – I was so hungry that no doggie bag was required. A rare occurrence… I polished off BHK’s last cheese enchilada, on top of my potato flauta thingums. The enchilada sauce there is fantastic, but variable, depending on the chef on duty.

From there we went to Aardvark, and Chatted with Mike and the gang… we missed seeing Tara this time out. One of his employees was very fun to talk to, and is interested in getting BHK and I to try out D&D miniatures gaming.. we have the freebie that was given out, and it looks like a hoot. I was admiring his Xorn and Landshark figures.. very meta, as I think that they started out as random plastic toys… If there had been a owlbear or a rust monster, I’d have been sure.

We picked up Tsuro, a few generic wooden pawns of different colors (red, black, white, green, a light and a slightly darker natural wood colors), and Issue #3 of Marvel Fairy tales. It’s funny to me that BHK gets more comics through my drawer there than I do… I lean to trade paperbacks rather than singles these days. The Fairy tales series is cute. Each book is pretty self-contained.

Foolishly forgot to get ice cream at Aardvark, and cold stone creamery was out, so chik-fil-a milkshake did the trick. BHK got a tiny triplet of chicken strips… they were so good that she decided that she’d like those on a platter for her birthday. (She said “instead of a cake”, but heck if anyone I know is going to not have a cake without good reason!)

Swung by the mailbox, got our netflix, and then got home, and unpacked our goodies, popped some corn, and got ready to play some Tsuro while watching Machine Girl. The movie has a great trailer, but the film itself doesn’t carry itself very well… we stopped watching about 20-30 minutes in. We swapped it out for Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. It’s cute for a chick flick – good excuse for 4 stories in one movie, I preferred the filmmaker’s tale over the others.

As for our Tsuro games – 1 tie, bhk beat me twice. I think that it’ll be a lot more random, and less strategic (it’s really only light strategy – each game takes about 15 minutes) with more players.. the pieces are easy on the eyes, and the rules were a little unclear about the dragon tile. All the dragon tile does is tell who got to the bottom of the draw pile, so when cards come back, they get first draw. You can really just toss out the dragon tile, and the game would be the same… maybe it’s better to remind folks when 8 people are playing – as they are knocked out, the tiles they held go back into the draw.

Newton and Pye did a terribly cute nose-kiss while we watched the movie. I’m very happy that they’re so social with each other.

So, BHK won the games day by 3 victories to my 2 victories and one tie game. Nicely Matched.

After Sisterhood, we puttered watching the tube a bit… but now it’s time to head to snoozetown. Until later, dear journal.
