7695 – August Behind, September Ahead.

So long, August! Hopefully September promises good things in the coming weeks ahead.

I was given revised paid links last night… maybe the mystery of the phantom July payment will be solved.

I know for sure which entry of mine has the longest ongoing comment conversation at least across time, if not in sheer numbers. An entry posted back in July of 2002 about Roanoke and the Lumbee Indians (Long before those two wiki articles) still has people dropping in now and again, more than three years later, including a couple die-hard regulars. I come up as entry #30 on a google search regarding the tribe, and I’m not sure that any of the sites before mine have an area to post personal commentary. The biggest discussion seems to be whether or not there is African American blood in the tribe as a result of escaped slaves assimilated into the group. There doesn’t seem to be a clear answer, and neither side of the discussion seems to be showing signs of backing down.

That said, there are only 50 comments in that entry as of this writing… I have two or three entries that have sparked off into long comment trails of 500+, but those discussions peter out about a week or two after being posted. That’s a case of seven people just talking back and forth… it turned into sort of a chat room, rather than a discussion forum near the end.

7639 – Thank you, Lisa2!! (Electric Boogaloo)

Lisa2, (or Weez & Sedef) sent me a lovely strawberry shortcake glitter night light (red, of course, with strawberry shaped foil bits to spin around). It’s awesome, and matches my blue glitter lava lamp perfectly. Hmm, I guess in proper sense, it would be 2(Lisa)?

It totally made my day, and I was needing a pick-me-up! In the dark, it sends off a very warm glow, compared to the cool light of the blue, too.

Thank you so much!! (Pink in honor of you both, and Strawberry Shortcake.)

I still think Holly Hobbie could totally take Miss Shortcake in a fight, but SS does have a nice scent about her.

Phone Post: 7618 – Walkabout though the valley of the homeless

PhonePost
371K 2:03
(Help)

“On this morning’s walk, I was hit up no less than 6 times by vagrants for change or anything I could give them. I don’t know what’s happening with this population down here, they’re not going back up north for the summer, or if they are, the population that’s remaining is very high. I think that if the population triples again come September/early October that the situation here will become intolerable. I can’t see walking, y’know, 4 miles and having a bunch of hands stuck out, reaching at me… y’know, this isn’t Calcutta. I… I don’t need, don’t want, um, people in varying levels of um, mental health and physical health and cleanliness just sticking their hands out, just begging for money… can’t tell who really needs it, who wants a fix, who wants beer, uh, and who really needs help. All I can do is tell people where St. Vincent’s is, tell people where the homeless shelters are, and take it from there. I absolutely cannot give money to anyone anymore. It’s a dice roll I’m not going to make.

Well, that’s, um, officially random, I guess. Right now I’m at the Coral Square Mall, hanging out in the mostly-dead food court, there’s still a Chinese food place, a uh… random grill and a pizza joint, but all the good stuff’s gone. There used to be a French bread place… that’s gone, uh, a couple other little snacky-places that are just no longer here. And uh, I think I’ll just walk around here for a little bit then go to the club in a bit, come noon or one o’clock, and then report back home while uh my tech has to go to the gym. I’ll take call. Then my night’s free. I’ll have Saturday night and all day Sunday to do walkabout and hang out and have fun. Don’t know what I’m gonna do yet, but I’ll take things as they come.

I hope your day is good, I’ll talk to you later, dear journal. You have a great one. Bye.”

7602 – On the other hand, you have different fingers.

Mostly peaceful Sunday, thank goodness. Bro asking me about CDs and DVDs for the new portable player that he “acquired”. He still hasn’t given me my old DVDs back yet, and I told him that. I may have a burned copy of some old cartoons and the like for him, but I don’t know if giving them to him is a kindness, or condoning his behavior. I’ll have to reflect on it some more.

That reminds me, I have to get postage and mail out those other DVDs.

Moment of Lyric: (mp3)

7533 – Midweek already! hooray 4-day weeks!

Not nearly enough time with MP yesterday. Had supper with Danny ad Subway, and we gabbed a bit. He brought me a present of The Bard’s Tale, which was a pleasant surprise. I haven’t installed it yet, but it looks like fun. I forgot to get my Tiki Cup.

I told MP that I thought about her snuggled close when I went to sleep at night. She replied playfully “you don’t think about me during the day?” and gave me a triple-threat smooch. (both cheeks, and then on the kisser.) She’s flattered when I wear the cologne she got me. She also told me that she didn’t want me to suffer while she’s gone.. I’ll be pretty cool, I think, as long as she heads back to the states in Sept like she plans. I’ll be fairly peeved if that doesn’t come to pass.

Bro talked to me, and he told me that he hadn’t seen me put on my rage-face on like I did when that whole almost-fight happened en route to the bus station. I haven’t had to manhandle my bro in ages, and I think he was surprised when I kind of pulled him out of the way and intervened between him and the other guy.

There’s a part of me that *really* wanted to commit violence on the BS-guy. Pounding the devil out of him, and taking a few hits would’ve been cleansing. That sort of behavior is wholly inappropriate, but the caveman inside would’ve been happy for a few minutes.

I wouldn’t mind a sparring partner or a good long session smacking the heavy bag.

Forehead Inflation. – via temporary saline injection – Maybe not for the squeamish.

I’ve got the Nairobi Trio playing Solfeggio in my head over and over. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

I miss the Ernie Kovacs show.

What the heck… over 800 hits yesterday on the easter manatee entry? What’s causing folks to go back to the end of march back to tag it? it’s not direct picture links.. it’s the entry itself. different locations, assorted browsers… and it’s not from google or yahoo search. no referral links.

Tropical Storms Cindy and Dennis may be on the way? Seedling hurricanes.

I’m not too worried about Cindy….

But Dennis is a distinct possibility. Would I be selfish to hope I could hole up from the storm with MP for the weekend?

7525 – Sun-de-dun-dun-day

Yesterday was headache-y, but ok. Mp, Newt and I just sort of flopped around and slept off and on. There’s something to be said about curling up in a little knot and just sleeping the day away inside while the rain pounds outdoors.

Lapjuicer – “The Lapjuicer is intended to be used by a lap-dancer in a club. The performer uses their body with the object, in order to extract fruit juices that can be drunk by one or more spectators.”

Got Season 2, Episode 12 of JLU. Divided We Fall, Lots of good moments – “Begone”, etc. Worst moment, integrating 3-d cgi models into the show… it’s not needed and is pointlessly distracting. The last episode of the season, unless they have a puff piece one-shot for #13. Vimoh got lucky… no cliffhanger after all. 12 episodes rather than last season’s 13?

Spoilers: Nice use of how Brainiac was just a green Lex Luthor, really. Good Psychological Warfare using the Justice Lords. Awesome use of the speed force with Wally. Groovy Proof of purpose at the end, and The change of JLU from being an army in an ivory tower to a more approachable crew. Embassies. Wide open for a JLI season 3. I liked that they fell back on the classic League crew to sew up the end, and Green Arrow’s speech was solid.

A better Breakdown about Bibleman than I have time to write.

Or just watch the preview trailers on this page. Cringe-worthy, when you can say that ElectraWoman and DynaGirl has better dialog, and a kinder message. (and cuter people in spandex.)

Actually, If you must watch one preview, watch the opening Credits for ElectraWoman and DynaGirl. Frank was a lucky man. Tarantulas! Rattlesnakes! Tigers! Sonic Blasts destroying snifters of brandy! Scary Rock-and-roll villains with a green afro! (His name was Glitter Rock.)

ElectraWoman and DynaGirl fighting off evil deeds.
Each works for a magazine, hiding the life she leads.

ElectraWoman and DynaGirl summoned to Electra-base by the electracoms they wear.
Lori and Judy dare to face any criminal anywhere.

ElectraWoman and DynaGirl !

Man, I had a huge crush on Judy. (as long as she stayed away form that Metamorphosis Formula #5.)

I won’t be attending the Bibleman show… but maybe I’ll go check out what sort of crowd it collects.

Not a lot to say about my life, dear journal. Have a pile of links, instead.

The finest radio drama of the 1930’s was The Mercury Theatre on the Air, a show featuring the acclaimed New York drama company founded by Orson Welles and John Houseman. In its brief run, it featured an impressive array of talents, including Agnes Moorehead, Bernard Herrmann, and George Coulouris. The show is famous for its notorious War of the Worlds broadcast, but the other shows in the series are relatively unknown. This site has many of the surviving shows, and will eventually have all of them.

7442 – Love, Hate, Hope, Faith.

Track 15 of 53 (about 4 hours) of Going Postal. Quite pleasant to listen to while eating dinner and petting the cat. Much like old-time radio. Goes a lot slower than my standard reading speed… I can usually grind out a whole book in that span, but the voice talent is a nice trade-off. I’m in no rush, after all. He does a superb Igor, in particular.

Not a bad way to fill time while locked in.

[EDIT: – I slept in until 12:30??? The night was longer than I thought!]

Got a free pie after having to wait 2 hours. I called at the one hour mark, and they mentioned he was on his way… called again at the 1:45 mark, as my place is about 3/4 mile from the delivery joint. Turns out the delivery guy was pinned in at the beach…. I still tipped the guy, as he was friendly and apologetic. When all is said and done, I didn’t mind sitting tight a bit for a large pineapple and green pepper pizza for $2.

Grabbed the Pilot for Global Frequency… pretty typical Sci-Fi channel fare. It has the potential to be a good show, if they step away from the needless stutter-cut/bullet time/speedup-slowdown film/ matrix crap. A neat idea… I hadn’t read the comic, so I don’t know how it compares to the source material. If it got some good writing and stays away from “my cell phone is a mother box” scenarios, I think it’d be a nice blend of Delta Green style Mission Impossible vs. The X-files.

Haven’t watched the new Who episode yet, but I’m sure I will have before bedtime tonight. I have no idea why it came down the pipe so slow… 1600 seeders, and I was only getting 26kB/s? The Daily Show was giving me 165!

I don’t know why nobody seems to seed Kim Possible. It’s the only show I can’t seem to fill my queue with. Thank goodness for DC++ and bittorrent… Since I got NetFlix, I really don’t need to mooch movies online, so it’s all strictly TV rips these days. That reminds me, I need to swap out my current stack of movies, and see what’s heading my way. The first Season of Carnivale and Get a Life, I think. *There’s* a dandy combination.

I forgot about my writing assignment again until just now. I wonder if I’ll ever get around to doing it properly.. doing an outline, writing a rough, stepping away for a day and coming back to edit cleanly. It seems that they’re always born whole cloth, no real structure outside of a scene or two, and just stitched together as I go. Bad form. I think keeping a journal these last few years has actually helped to make me a lazy writer, contrary to my original plan.

If all goes well, I see MP next weekend. I’ve got to clean up the apartment, as I’ve let it go to bachelor slack again.

oneeyedcat and her “praise the lord” bracelets got me thinking about something. Jesus had all those loaves and fishes going on…. nobody thought to make a fish sandwich? (About 1700 or so years before this guy invented it.)

Mister Little Brown Mousie made an appearance yesterday evening, but then high-tailed it behind the fridge. I was afraid to move it, for fear of killing the little guy, so I put Newt in the bathroom, got the broom, and opened my front door in an attempt to make some noise to flush him out and send him packing. No dice. It’s driving me to distraction… I don’t want to hurt him, so I’m going to have to get creative if I want to evict my new housemate.

Speaking of food and large groups:

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has released a game called Food Force. Available for download for free, the game is compatible with Macs and PCs. The WFP’s goal in releasing Food Force is to educate players about world hunger and the work the aid agency does.

The game puts players in charge of a hunger relief effort on the fictional Indian Ocean island of Sheylan, ravaged by a civil war, flooding and drought. You lead a crack multinational team of WFP professionals including a logistics officer, nutritionist and air drop specialist, and you must lead the team through six missions to bring food and supplies to the desperate natives of Sheylan — everything from air surveillance to figuring out a good balanced diet, airdropping supplies, and helping natives get the most out of their natural resources by planning future farming efforts.

Yesterday, I got a post in my journal from Havagan… haven’t heard from him in an age. I rather thought he might show up at the trip to Sith with Kev and the FMM crew, but no such luck. He left IMT/FMM when? Last time I mentioned him in my Journal was 8/8/2001 (or his real name on 1/24/2001), and was already gone (as was Tman and Pixx)

The Momster & Wilt are going on a cruise next week, and she brought over some stuff that wasn’t going to make it through the time they’ll be gone. Score me some blueberry yogurt, granola and diet coke. It came at a good time, because Mr. Cupboard is bare, save for some green beans and tomato soup. yummy, but not exactly breakfast fare. She also gave me a double sawbuck for dinner and a movie, which was quite welcome, too.

RI on Friday raised the question to me in front of everyone else “Who would you say is the most sane person in this office?” and then narrowed it down to just her and me. I answered that sanity is a pretty subjective term, but that I thought that I had a more calm and balanced demeanor, and that she had more personality quirks than I do. (Which is saying something. I think that I’m a pretty quirky guy.) She then got a little perturbed… I think because she wanted to set herself up as the bastion of stability or something. She then wanted me to list out her quirks for her… I really didn’t have any more time to put into that conversation ,and I told her that I’d point ’em out as I saw them. She seemed really surprised… I wonder what set off that conversation before I arrived back at the office?

Speaking of which, note to so many people lately who “keep it real” or whatever: You can tell the truth and explain how you feel about things without being a jerk. People who say “I’m not a bitch, I just tell the truth” seem to think that they’re mutually exclusive. Not the case. You can be up front with a person and not be vulgar about the whole thing.

Good thoughts for Whims and her family right now.

Bro visited mom at work, was looking sharp. Clean, short-sleeved shirt, solid mindset, has a gig telemarketing. It was good for her to see him in decent shape for a change.

I want to sleep the whole weekend away. Just float in limbo, comfortably. Talk to some good friends, relax with the Newtie-boy. Maybe toss in a loaf or two of fresh baked bread and honey.

Got a free lunch donated to us at work yesterday… Lenny’s gave the company a platter of three big ol’ subs. Italian, Turkey and Veggie. I can dig a free lunch… ECN also gave me a bag of M&Ms for dessert.

I got to talk to MP for about a minute yesterday. It was nice, but far too short.

When I got home last night, they were tearing down the little 2-bedroom house in my backyard. That’s a shame… I think that little building had been there since the 1930s or before. Cute little Key West-style place done in white with navy blue trim. I can now look out my bedroom window and see two streets over.

I rather think that I preferred the cozy sense of privacy that I had before, but we’ll see if I change my mind over the next couple of days. I wonder how this’ll effect security and flyby factor for the next major storm?

The street lamp bleeds a little mor [brief visit from Newt-foot on keyboard – /././../] e illumination over now.

Newt was watching the earthmover equipment with fascination…I wonder what he thought they were, from his point of view? I suspect he was more interested in the noise that they were making than anything else.

I didn’t even know the guy in the house had moved out. My brother used to hang out with the tenant’s son, a bodybuilder guy that eventually went to jail for some sort of assault / battery charge on a cop.

I have to remember to let GrayPumpkin see this.

Moment of Lyric: (mp3) (I wish I could remember where I found this)

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an Emperor – that’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone, if possible – Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another; human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful.

But we have lost the way.

So, now I have 100 user pictures available now. I’ll just repopulate with all my old saved ones. The only one I can’t seem to find is Papa Smurf from the old days, which is easily recreated. I also tossed a couple of stock one found in my travels that struck my fancy. (Zombie Robin, Zim and the pig, Ewok Love, and the meow cats.) I made a couple of others too, that I’d been meaning to resize.

I currently use about five with regularity, depending on the primary topic of what I’m writing about and the remaining are all silly-filler. Maybe I should make a theme out of a few, like 20 or so?

Got a lovely phone call from MP yesterday.. that took the edge off nicely.

Got sort of hot in the morning meeting yesterday. BK went off sort of half-cocked, and burned RI’s biscuits. A lot of angry folks afterwards, and the meeting was a pressure cooker for the gang from 8:30-noon. I’m glad I bug out early. If BK’s not careful, she’s going to burn the wrong bridges just by not following a proper path of communications.

Florida judges are tossing out DUI cases when defendants ask to see the source code for the breathalysers that busted them — the manufacturers won’t turn over the source, and since the machine’s correct operation is critical to establishing the case against the DUIers, the case is dismissed when it can’t be produced.

All four of Seminole County’s criminal judges have been using a standard that if a DUI defendant asks for a key piece of information about how the machine works – its software source code, for instance – and the state cannot provide it, the breath test is rejected, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday…

Seminole judges have been following the lead of county Judge Donald Marblestone, who in January ruled that although the information may be a trade secret and controlled by a private contractor, defendants are entitled to it.
