Went to Supper at Mama Lucias with BHK and the in-laws… food was good and it was nice to sit around the table and make small talk. BHK and I split gnocci with marinara and eggplant parm.
No ghosts seen or dealt with last night, despite Walpurgisnacht.
New month – Things to do today – pay mortgage, check doctor’s appointments and meds, and finish making out my will. (no particular reason, dear journal, just that it’s out of date.)

ARTOMATIC opens on Friday, May 9th. Days and hours are:
Wednesday: 5pm-10pm
Thursday: 5pm-10pm
Friday: Noon – 2am (yes, you read that correctly)
Saturday: Noon – 2am
Sunday: Noon – 10pm
Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays
The last day is June 15th
And so, April comes to an end. Seeya next year, April! Wasn’t too bad of one this year, all told. Some stresses, some solutions… it seems to have come and gone fairly rapidly.
Was I just doing taxes 2 weeks ago? It seems like months. I’m still getting the occasional treat at http://drop.io/scottobear , feel free to drop something off, or pick something up. I removed the m4ps, but the mp3 music is still out there.
Had the in-laws over – BHk made pseudo-beef stroganoff, baked zucchini and corn on the cob – a fine dinner which caused me to consume with gusto… and too much.
Back was doing pretty well until I hit the sack – laying straight caused some medium discomfort. I think I’ll take my night meds a half hour before bed for maximum ease.
.
.
Oh, I forgot one – speaking of robots – the Wall-E bench.
there’s a heart on the seat – Wall-E + Eve

Back is feeling much better today. Not great, but only a low-level ache and tightness at the moment. The pills best used before bed as they make me sleepy and thus not suitable for work or any sharp thought-based activity during the day.
Still haven’t heard from brother since he was released from jail. I imagine that no news is good news…. I think I’ll call him tonight, though.
Yesterday afternoon while I was taking care of some issues, BHK ran to the nursery and picked up some veggies for us – Flowers : Ranunculus (look mostly like the Heart of Gold ), Some Red Cat Tails, a dozen ears of corn, and a big bag of zucchini. Local food for supper the next few days!
Also after work, BHK and I went to see The Forbidden Kingdom. I’d say that we both liked it – the settings and fight choreography were lovely, but I would really have loved to see what they’d have done in the 80’s, when they were both at physical prime. It was also a bit too… American, I guess. The bookends of “bullies chase kid with no ‘fu”, to “kid, now trained, defeats bullies” weakened the picture a bit. Overall, I was more than pleased, but it wasn’t as fantastic as I’d have hoped. Not in the same league as othe rcurrent wire fu flicks, but seeing Li and Chan together was pretty nifty… Plus, The Monkey King!
After the movie’s popcorn, we were ready for some serious supper time, and headed to Red Robin… we were seated between an old man who had a fragrance of tomato soup in a baby diaper and an adorable down’s syndrome baby.
That was ok, save for the distracting scent… but after waiting for about 10 minutes without seeing a server, I took it as a sign of possible things to come, and we left.
We made a beeline for Cheeburger2 and were seated immediately… placed our order, and chitty-chatted. The Trivial Pursuit cards at the table were ones we’d already done before, but that’s the risk we take by going there so often. Our server was seemingly inexperienced at her job… a little while after we placed our order, she came back to tell us that they were all out of veggie burgers. Apparently, neither BHK or I were slotted for the meal we were looking for tonight. We got ready to go, and the girl pleaded with us to stay – free milkshakes were offered. (Reasonable, since they were already made, waiting for our non-present main course to come to us.) We said that it was ok, but she begged us to stick around while she got her boss to make things right. Bogdan was there, acting as manager… we really can’t say no to him. He’s been our burger buddy since I first moved here, and BHK has known him longer than that. He gave us some other options, which worked out fine. I got a grilled portobello sammich and BHK did a cow-burger, both had the same toppings and treatment we wanted on the veggie-burgers.
The shakes were tasty, though not as thick, since they had time to melt while we waited… I got a chocolate mint (not as good as chocolate cherry), and BHK had a standard ol’ fashioned chocolate malt.
We made it home at about 9ish, BHK checked her email while I played a little TF2 (polishing my Heavy and Demoman skills) and Counterstrike.
Naughty Newt wouldn’t let BHK’s water alone… first he stuck his face close to it, and sneezed into the surface…. insuring that BHK wouldn’t be drinking any. With that, he lapped the contents until he wasn’t comfortable sticking his face inside the cup… so he put a paw in and pulled it over to drink from the puddle. BHK didn’t know that he’s fond of that little procedure. I guess she knows now. We went to bed shortly thereafter… reading turned swiftly to sleep.

In considerable pain today, the ol’ back is acting up, and meds are making me sleepy, but not soothing much… possible making me more irritable, as well. I’m glad tomorrow at work will have the bulk of senior staff off site, depending on my mood. I suspect some of the fresh pain might be due to the changing weather… lots of rain tonight and last.
BHK took great care of me today – we watched Sweeney Todd over leftover cabbage soup and toasted cheese bagels (bhk opted for leftover Mexican food), prior to that, we did a little pre-planting of our garden – seeds of broccoli, bell pepper, zucchini and pumpkin are in small covered racks under our bench in the living room… hopefully away from prying kitty paws.
Last night’s episode of SNL noted some pretty glaring aspects of Greased Lightning (click link at own risk) – look up the lyrics to it, if you’re wondering why so few schools perform it.
BHK is making some surprise supper… smells good, but I have no idea what it is yet. [Update – it was veggie brats, kraut and green peppers! victory is mine!]
Closed the night watching a special on Pixar – how they got started, Disney issues, etc… pretty good! I knew the bulk of the tale, but it was interesting to see clips of the animations and add faces to the names I knew. BHK pointed out that Brad Bird does look a lot like the bad guy in the Incredibles – I doubt that was a coincidence.
We missed Maryland day on Saturday… so much for one of 50,000 cupcakes ! I bet Adam had a grand time, though.

Lovely day today.
Lots of gypsy moth and / or tent caterpillar nests in the crooks of trees around here. Seeing birds and moths in flight through the early morning fog is something magical, if you’ll excuse the lack of a less cliched expression, dear journal. I really dislike defoliation, but watching moths and butterflies flit around makes me happy. The first date I had with BHK, we saw a luna moth in the parking lot of Mama Lucias, and we were both captivated by it. Now of course, it’s doing advertising for a sleep aid.
Believe it or not, I’m a very quiet cricket, too.
Tomorrow will be my 18 month (I just spelled it moth… on the brain) wedding anniversary. Good stuff! only 33 more of those until our 50 year mark!
Goal at the doc today was muscle relaxers or a cortisone shot, maybe an appointment with a physical therapist? I don’t want to take narcotics for this, or only in an emergency.
Results were pretty positive – found a potentially good resource for physical therapy, and a few non-dopey pain fixers. I’m going to do more research on the different drugs before taking them this weekend.
After the doc, we went to Ledo’s – BHK got a cookin’ break. Yummy, but not as good as her stuff.
Ah, Almost Friday.

she wasn’t taking my ride. I halfway wonder if the phone was even active.

Rainy day and a Monday, but I’m not letting it get me down. Newt, Pye and BHK always bring me right up again!
BHK made tasty split pea soup and cornbread for supper – and then I won a game of Balloon Cup afterward while we watched Next (not a bad flick, goofy action flick, but fun.) Turning in early, now.
Assorted pics taken today or found lately:

Now that I’ve put this out there, I wonder how active it’ll become? Send me something, dear journal! I’ve got 100 megs just waiting. 🙂
Taken with the palmtop… sadly, it’s about impossible to get a good shot of Pyewacket, unless he’s under very bright light… he turns into a black smear with a pair of shiny yellow eyes. Newt’s black whiskers barely show, but his whites are pretty visible.
BHK made some of the best tofu/black rice stir fry last night… nom nom nom.
Ah, the end of another week… I’m looking forward to a gentle weekend, this go ’round. Sleepy This morning.

Me in the office, post saying Shazam! Regarding Uncle Dudley/Uncle Marvel. During the classic era, an old man named Dudley (who was clearly modeled after W. C. Fields) claimed that he was not only a relative of the Marvels but also a Marvel himself, although neither was true. The Marvels took a liking to him and decided to humor him, and “Uncle” Dudley became Uncle Marvel, the Marvel Family’s manager. He’d make his “transformation” along with one or more of the others, but not by magic; rather, by quickly removing his break-away garments (under the cover of lightning that the real Marvel(s) called down) to reveal his homemade Marvel costume underneath. He explained his lack of super-powers by claiming he suffered from “shazambago”. In modern continuity, Dudley H. Dudley is simply a janitor at Billy’s school who finds himself involved in Marvel Family adventures, although in one story he was temporarily given Shazam powers to help round up the escaped Seven Deadly Enemies of Man.
Oh, my Shazambago!
Green monkey-alien in a bubble. He’s wearing his bubble summoning-belt, of course. He’s been climbing a lot, note his filthy hands and feet. I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a damn, dirty ape, however. I was thinking a little bit of Rescue on Fractalus recently, thus the cheesy lines and markings. The hammerhead alien Jaggi had great pop-up spook value in his day. Soft hearted for Planet of the Apes, Martian Manhunter, and Bubble-force fields all unwrapped into that, I guess.
Dealing with “customer service” regarding bugs, bug fixes, and time lines. I seemed to get only one word answers, with no detail as to where, when or how items would be fixed. I ultimately got it worked out, via my own trouble tree and specific questions, but it was like pulling teeth… on a rampaging hippo. I’m just glad that it’s now mostly functioning.
Midweek already! How’d that happen? No complaints, mind you, dear journal.
At just about noontime yesterday I used Shazam! as an expletive of surprise. Without irony, or mocking Cap’n Marvel / Gomer Pyle.
What’s happening to my brain?
I don’t know.
So I wrote a Haiku.
Now, I want an animal cracker. Or better, a box of animal crackers. Higher on the food chain, the better. Except for gorillas. I’d like some gorillas.
BHK made a really yummy giant salad for supper – Chris and Larry came over, but they stuck to cheesy-toast and hot dogs. More salad for me! 😀
Once the lover of Polish intelligence agent Major Jerzy Sosnowski, Benita put some distance between them by marrying the Baron von Berg. However she and her husband remained on friendly terms with Sosnowski and mingled within the same social circles. Rumors of Sosnowski’s activity in espionage began to surface, although charges were unable to be proven.
In February 1935, the Nazis raided a party at which the Baroness, her husband, and Sosnowski were in attendance. Over fifty people were rushed off to jail and several were released after being cleared of charges of espionage and other crimes. Though secrecy shrouded the Nazi proceedings, it eventually became known that the Baroness von Berg, along with Sosnowski’s mistress Renate von Natzmer, were sentenced to death. On February 18, 1935 both women were taken to the block at Plotzensee Prison in Berlin and decapitated by the axe.
(The ‘heading axe’ , as it was called, was little more than a blunt, primitive chopper which crushed its way through the flesh and vertebrae of the victim as he or she, knelt over the block on which their head lay. The executioners axe did not always cut through on the first strike nor did it often hit its target accurately.)
In 1938, Adolph Hitler decreed that all future executions be done by hanging or guillotine.
Time Magazine Article (for future ref):
Time Magazine – Monday, Feb 25, 1935 –
There was scarcely a word in the papers. No one would mention it by telephone or letter, yet everywhere that Germans met last week, behind locked doors where no servants could hear, they talked of nothing else. What had happened to the beautiful Baroness von Berg? Would she be beheaded? Had she already been executed? Was Baron Sosnowski in jail? Had he been sent back to Poland?
For a year details of the story have been leaking out (TIME, Nov. 19). Baron George (“Yurek”) Sosnowski is an extremely handsome young Pole who served gallantly in the Austrian Army, loves women, excitement. Deeply infatuated with him was the beautiful Baroness Benita von Berg, a blonde whose first husband was Richard von Falkenhayn, son of the late great General von Falkenhayn. Berlin society knew that it was to escape the influence of Polish Baron Sosnowski that beauteous, divorced Benita married stolid Baron von Berg. Curiously, all four remained friendly, all went to the same parties. Sosnowski’s parties were enough to set Berlin gossips hissing like snakes. People not invited insisted that there were buckets of champagne, sexual orgies.
About a year ago the mother of a Frau von Natzmer, well-born German girl serving as a secretary in the Ministry of Defense, went to the Ministry to complain that her daughter was being made to work too late at night. The official whose secretary she was knew that she had done very little overtime work. He reported the matter to Nazidom’s secret police.
Last February Baron Sosnowski gave another party, officially for his latest protegee, a dancer. Berlin’s half-world knew what to expect. With glittering eyes they hurried to his apartment. This time a whole cordon of secret police were waiting at the door. Many times had the Baron Sosnowski been suspected of espionage. No charge ever stuck. He blamed his luck on a curious signet ring that he always wore. Several weeks before this last party he lost his ring pulling the Baroness von Berg’s puppy from a canal.
All the guests, over 50, were rushed to jail, many of them kept there for days without a chance to change the evening clothes that they had come in. Then the weeding out started. One of the first to be released was Baroness von Berg’s first husband, von Falkenhayn. He turned out to be a member of the secret police himself.
As iron Nazi secrecy clamped down, the Sosnowski case became a lurid legend, strictly censored in the German Press, totally baffling to correspondents until they were able to tell the U. S. Embassy that languishing in jail and possibly about to be beheaded for “treason” was an inoffensive young U. S. music student, Miss Isobel Lillian Steele. Diplomatic pressure forced Germany to disgorge Miss Steele (TIME, Jan. 7), even the secret police finally admitting that she was guilty of nothing. But the music student had been innocently acquainted with Baroness von Berg, proceeded to spill all sorts of Sosnowski facts, and is now hard at work in a Manhattan hotel dashing off Sosnowskiana for tabloids and writing a book.
In Berlin last week the Sosnowski case finally reached its grim denouement before the People’s Court. This is packed exclusively with Hitler appointees, five of them aviators. Only the Realmleader can alter its judgments, which take precedence over the German Supreme Court, kicked by Nazi New Justice into discard. Normally the People’s Court lets its sentences of death be known only after the guilty heads have been chopped. Last week by a great exception underground Berlin grapevines got out word that the Court had sentenced Baroness von Berg and Frau von Natzmer to death, had let off with life imprisonment Baron Sosnowski and two unnamed female employees of the Defense Ministry. Only one question remained, would the two doomed German women die by the Nazi ax, or by the method to which spies are traditionally privileged, a firing squad?
To find out anything whatever at Plotzensee Prison, even when correspondents arrived armed with official passes, proved almost impossible. Not until the enormous prison hearse drew up and two bodies were slid in, would anyone reconstruct what had been done in the cold, misty dawn.
“They were shot,” said officials at first, then “They were beheaded.” Accustomed to such bare-faced lies, the newshawks patiently pecked for details, finally satisfied themselves that an axing had occurred. With the backs of their heads shaved bald, the Baroness von Berg and Frau von Natzmer were led in coarse, nondescript prison garb to the blood-caked block from which so many heads now roll in the sawdust. The headsman, incongruous in his yellowish celluloid shirtfront, his old silk hat and his red-spotted tailcoat, raised the gleaming ax. Twice it swished down to sever a lovely neck and send the blood of a German woman spouting high. According to Nazis, the Baroness von Berg was the first female aristocrat to lose her head to their New Justice.
BHK and I aren’t watching as much TV as usual… I suspect we’re hitting an ebb tide right now. However, things may change once the new shows start rolling in again. I believe that there was a new Samantha, Who on last night, and I imagine that once Psych and Burn Notice start to roll again, we’ll be watching at least a few hours a week.
After supper last night, we came home, had some razzles and read (or did Internet research on the Tidal Basin Inlet Bridge – had to find out what was up with this sculpture/grotesque on the side.)
50 things you’ve done meme continues at 47 – I…
47.’built more than a few models as a kid. Not always well-done…. but I always did ’em to completion, even if some got the lighter treatment for “battle damage”. At my youngest, I did snap-together models of cars that could be played with right afterward – pretty rewarding… the more advanced ones like aircraft carriers and tanks always had guns and tiny airplanes that would easily fall off or break if played with too roughly…. plus, dust and dirt wrecked paint jobs.
This might be why I’m a little attracted to Warhammer or just painting minis. Models you can play with are something extra special. I still don’t know if I want to do Warhammer Fantasy or some other system… meanwhile, I may just get some paints and work on army men / mage knight leftover figures that could use a little color or customization. I’m due to make BHK and myself some updated figures, as I don’t have long hair anymore, and I never did make one of her.
Maybe it’s time for us to investigate Fimo and the like, too? Image on the right is an ancient one of Danny and me fending off a few zombies on a papercraft bridge.
