8223 – Saturday, on call.

RS dropped from full-time at the office to working part time from home. I think that’ll work out much better for her.

For about 17 cents a minute, SpoofCard lets you send any numeric string as your Caller ID code. It comes with optional voice modification. And you don’t need a computer to use the service.

Joan (the building governor) called me up yesterday, and told me that she needed the key to my condo, “in case of emergencies”. How did she find out that her old key didn’t work? She went up to my place with the super to repair the oprch screens, and got upset that she couldn’t get in.

First of all, I had the screens repaired before I had even moved in, and I documented that to her in no uncertain terms… in December.

Second, there was no notice that she’d be going into my home. It surely wasn’t an emergency.

Third, She couldn’t be bothered to *telephone* before trying to get into my place.

Fourth, Newt’s in there… and she doesn’t have the reaction time to stop him if he decided to bolt.

Needless to say, I got a little hot with her on the phone. I told her that she is under *no* circumstances to enter my place without my permission or presence. She won’t be getting a key anytime soon now. I’m glad I found out before relying on her

Her excuse was “well, I rang your doorbell, and nobody answered, so I figured I’d come in and take care of it”

um, no. What if I was having a shower or sleeping soundly? If I came out of there / work and spotted her in my apartment, I would very likely have tossed her happy ass in jail… or vibrated her carcass into its component atoms by screaming at her at the top of my pongid lungs.

8215 – memes and links, memes and links, I’m gonna get me some memes and links.

Argh, try as I may, I missed free pancake day. I made ’em for dinner last night, out of spite.

It surprises me that I’ve never heard play on words regarding elocution / electrocution regarding Prez GWB.

Swollen uvula this morning… I suspect I’m going to have to use the CPAP again. I was really hoping that I moved past the need to use it.

And now, the negative side of that adjective meme.

The Nohari Window is a challenging inversion of the Johari Window, using antonyms of the original words. By describing your failings from a fixed list of adjectives, then asking your friends and colleagues to describe you from the same list, a grid of perceived and unrecognized weaknesses can be explored.

There’s a lot of opportunity for hurt feeling here, I suspect.

Current Music is compliments of Planet Xtabay and saved in a file called Bongomania 2 zip file, good until about March 12, 2006
I found it searching for Xavier Cugat – Cuba Libre – Also has Peter Gunn played on bongos by the legendary Jack Costanzo. I think Call of the Jungle – Preston Epps is the best track on the album.

Cute girl and her son are moving to another condo… I finally got to see what she looks like when not doing laundry. She’s plenty pretty already in just sweats, a t-shirt and hair in a ponytail, sans makeup. It’s very odd to see her withher hair done, in an outfit for going outon the town… still nice looking but it’s a different vibe. I may be lazy, but I think Ilike the sweats and t-shirt cutie more than the “little black dress” hottie look. Either way, she’s out of this building by mid march, moving to a place nearby, so I won’t be chit-chatting with her at the laundry area while one of us waits for the other to unload and fold.

I haven’t seen a hint or a whisper of girl scout cookies yet this year. Where have all the thin mints gone?

T-shirt followup – Benefit of being the jolly green giant – a girlfriend can wear one of my shirts as a long nightgown. (or a 1980’s dress, if they have a wide belt.)

Just for laughs, I tried merging the two pictures I used in yesterday’s entry with autostitch. It did a pretty great job without any fiddling at all.

Hey, I got The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe as part of my prezzie from sedef and oneeyed. (the original 15-issue series bound in one “phone book”; this was the original OHOTMU. Issues 13 and 14 were the ‘Book of the Dead and Disabled’,featuring characters and groups who were, at the time, believed dead or inactive, and issue 15 was the ‘Book of Weapons,Hardware, and Paraphernalia’, featuring technical drawings of Iron Man‘s armor,Spider-Man‘s web-shooters and other notable characters’ equipment. The back of each issue in the series features a brief Appendix, giving one-line listings for minor and inactive characters.

Are there any classic, purely USA horrors? Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, Giant Monsters, berserk Animals, Frankenstein, Ghosts… all so classic as to be pre-union.

Maybe it’s because the USA is such a young country. Slasher/Psycho predator Films are pretty American, but even Fritz Lang had M, but that’s a lot different than “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”.

Mad Scientists? Stevenson was Scottish and lived in Samoa, I think. I guess 1950’s style Alien Invasion? Sort of HG Wells… who was from the UK.

Zombies are pretty American, even if we’ve had walking dead stories more than 200 years ago.

Florida ren-fest started yesterday… one of the premiums I got for donating blood at FBC was free passes. (along with $15 for Darden restauants – My odds are best for olive garden.) First time donating at Boca rather than Lauderdale was no different an experience, but they have a lot more fun donation loot.

I wonder if Sammy ever got the manatee shirt I sent?

Did a little doodling followed by coloring with crayons this morning. I think that the smell of the crayons was almost more incentive to color than the drawings themselves. Nothing in particular, mostly flow of wrist doodles.

snagged from christinAlignment quiz

I got:

Based on your answers to the quiz, your character’s most likely alignment is Neutral Good.

Neutral Good

A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. The common phrase for neutral good is “true good.” Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias toward or against order.

–excerpted from the Player’s Handbook, Chapter 6

Went on walkabout for a bit yesterday afternoon, but before I hoofed it, Mom and Wilt came by to drop off some goodies that they were getting rid of… some nifty hand-painted wine glasses and a veggie steamer / pasta pot. I don’t drink… wine.

I’ve been wearing a lot of colored, but plain t-shirts lately. Before this year, I think that all of my t-shirts (except undershirts) had some kind of picture, logo or saying on it… I rather like having some non-descript clothes. More colors than usual, too, not just sweatshirt gray / black / olive drab. Current mix is forest green, navy blue, light blue, maroon, dark rust, and a (perhaps ill-advised) “happy face” canary yellow.

There was a time years ago when 95% of what I wore outside of work were goofy T-shirts. Favorites were the good ol’ comic book ones — Spidey Duking it out with the Green Goblin (actually, I think I got that one as a birthday present from GP and Kat in the early 90s), Nick Fury, Flaming Carrot, Silver Surfer, A few different Matt Wagner Mage shirts, a Doctor Blasphemy, and a Reid Fleming, world’s toughest milkman ensemble. Others were a Miskatonic University Alumnus and plain logo, and weirdly (because I didn’t much dig the movie) a “Dick Tracy” opening night ticket shirt.

Hm, This Journal entry is a nice combination of boring and dorky, Scotto! Proof positive that I write primarily for myself, because precious few others could possibly care about my t-shirt preferences. Heck, even I might not care a year from now, but for now, I like having comfy clothes that fit, and don’t promote anything at all.

If I’m going to be dorky, I may as well put a random picture of a monkey up –

cowboy gorilla

Cowboy Gorilla! Yee-Haw! Speaking of not drinking wine, I think he was a vampire briefly. Vampire Cowboy Gorilla. Yup. He also fought Yarn Man a lot. also, a Badge pinned directly on his pecs seems a bit rough. Ii admire his ability to shoot and whip at the same time, though.

I’ve got to call Val up and wish her a happy happy – I think she’s 48 today. I owe her and Bobby a hello, even without a b’day involved.

Written on the bus yesterday morning –

ftlaudbus

Photo is from an earlier ride, when nobody else was aboard.

I dreamt last night that someone grasped my shoulders, pressed their thumbs into my armpits, and then my chest opened up — skin pulled back like contact paper on a drawer, a curved metal pair of bands where my ribs should’ve been opening like french doors. The cavity / cache was warm and dry, no sign of it’s biological location at all. A vaguely egg-shaped mechanical device was removed, and another was put in it’s place. the newer one seemed like something freshly constructed, clean ceramic with rubber rings, smelled a bit like machine oil. I don’t recall the face of the one who did that to me.

Do they make dried olives for cooking or a garnish? Would they be edible?

The bus this morning smells like a combination of car exhaust, cherry jolly ranchers and burger king hash brown rounds. Not entirely bad, and better than it could be, for sure.

More and more folks are using the bike racks on the front of the bus… more often than not, both slots are filled when I get aboard. I may rethink my idea of cycling to the stop, unless I spot a good place to lock it down for the workday.

I think I’m just going to stop posting local news… nah. too much cool freaky stuff.

I have been waiting for songbird since I first heard of iTunes. Super-duper reworking of the idea and allows open source.

May be going out with Vicki and the gang to Opa tonight to celebrate her Birthday (it was yesterday) and her new gig at the riverside. Flaming cheese, table dancers and smashed crockery!

Oh and as a public service announcement, the famous resturant across from Quiet Waters Park, Samurai Sal’s, has closed down. Who would have thought that a sushi/italian restaurant wouldn’t fly? I’m shocked. You’ll all have to go elsewhere for your sushi and pizza cravings.

Micro Retro A-Go-Go

Newish games journal Re:Retro reveals that “the world’s smallest website,” Guimp, has put up more of its adorable tiny clones of vintage arcade games, now including Pong, Pac Man, Asteroids(my personal fave), and Space Invaders.

Each game is boiled down to an 18-pixel square screen, replete with minimal-pixel graphics and clunky sound effects. It’s a concentrated dose of nostalgia as well as a design experiment gone horribly well.

8171 – Scotto hears a Who!

I saw an owl on the school fence, walking home from the bus stop last night. It was super cute… a tiny thing, maybe the size of a can of soda-pop… I was a little shocked, because I think of Owls as big birds of prey The bird looked like a brown and white feathered capsule, with huge yellow eyes and long skinny legs. I stopped in my tracks and admired it for a moment and then went to take a picture. It took off before I could snag him, but I found a very close approximation… it was a burrowing owl! (The mascot of my old university) Apparently they don’t get very large, so I doubt what I saw was a baby though it looked babyish to me at the time.

burrow owl

He flew off into this tree, outside of my view. The creepy yellow light looked nifty and I had the palmtop out, so I took a picture.

owl-tree

It’s odd… I think of owls as these huge predators, but this guy would’ve had trouble with a rat, I think. Maybe an anole or a mouse is more his speed. I’ll be coming back to see if I can spot him again. I really love living close to this sort of wildlife.

That Space piggy picture got well over 3500 hits over the course of 12 hours yesterday…that’s more hits than my coverage of the hurricane back in October, and I thought that was nuts. I wonder if someone else linked to it, because only a couple of dozen bounced through my journal-site to that page.

Made plans to go see Wicked with Danny some time in the weeks ahead. I’m looking quite forward to it, though I wonder how much he’ll like it. It was his idea, so groovy. Yikes.. I wonder how much he’ll balk when he finds out they’re between $109 and $225 per seat? I suspect I might be flying solo. A bit more expensive than the $5 seats for Arsenic and Old Lace at his school.

Pretty Keen – estimate to price of any address.

Floating wind turbines

The Magenn Power Air Rotor System (MARS) is an innovative lighter-than-air tethered device that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, efficiently generating clean renewable electrical energy at a lower cost than all competing systems.

magenn wind turbine

The magenn flying wind turbine is held up by helium generating 4Kw,enough to power your needs. It costs around $10,000, but it could pay for itself in about 6 years depending on how you use it. It’s anchored by a tether that can extend up to 1,000 feet above ground. Generally, 400 feet is enough to catch the minimum 3 meters/sec wind speed needed to sustain a nice supply of electricity. No towers or heavy foundations are necessary and sizes range from small “backpack” models to large megawatt generating devices.

Hard to believe it’s been a year since Mel and I were together. it doesn’t seem that long ago. Breaking up right before Vallie’s Day is a pretty stark reminder.

Newt is being a good kid, and is playing fetch with me, using his krackle-bug. He always knows when to pay extra attention. I’m very fortunate that he’s such a sweet little monkey.

8160 – too hot for tea, but I’ll take it anyway. It’s a nice day

GeotargetWow, thanks everybody for all the warm birthday wishes! Also, thank you to Oneeyed and Sedef for the great gift! I’m not sure what I’m going to get with it yet!

Like Phil, I saw my shadow, so a bit more cool weather for me, I hope

I’m officially part of 40 faces now, too!

Had a nice day so far, slept in, played with Newt, rode the bike downtown and got my homestead, voter’s registration, and ID all straightened out for the new address. I think I’m pretty much done transferring stuff to the new place, now. The new Florida state ID cards are pretty, and apparently I straighten out to 6’6″ on the wall height chart.

Also, very cool cards from Mom and Ldy, not to mention swell waves in other folk’s Journals and websites.

Danny’s getting sick, so probably no get-together tomorrow. Poor guy sounds more disappointed than I am that he’ll have to use his sick day actually being sick. My Plan B? Probably go to the spa and get a sports massage and try to get some jacuzzi-time in.

8156 – Welcome, February!

GeotargetOdd, considering yesterday’s news, that I took Wilt and the Momster to see The Matador last night (Was going to do Kong again, but a 3 hour movie on a “school night” is a no no for me)…sort of a chaotic film, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone in particular, but I liked it, after a fashion. Maybe a bit too much of some things and not enough of others…. very vague, but if you’ve seen it, you probably know what I mean. About an assassin for hire, not an actual matador. Not quite a comedy, not quite a thriller… great acting by both leads.
