Also getting some new threads, and maybe a piece of jewelry. Pictures will follow upon my return.

8563 – What *is* the melting point of a gorilla’s head?

Yarrr! It be Talk like a pirate day and Adam West’s 78th B’day!

First Columbo movie was fun…the M.O. of letting the bad guy be lulled into a false sense of security by a bumbler is a solid one. The writing has held up, and the acting is a lot better than other shows of the period. Nice use of Double Indemnity on TV as a story within a story.

Wow… the menstrualhut has over 2250 members now. When I first started it, I had no idea it’d still be growing and active five years later, pretty much on its own. I’m going to have to swing by the Museum of Menstruation when I’m in Maryland. His site is a goodly part of why the hut got rolling in the first place.

Washington D.C. (AHN) – A heap of debris taken from quarry trash in Mexico has yielded a stone block inscribed with what researchers believe is the oldest writing ever found in the New World. Researchers say the serpentine block dates back almost 3,000 years and was created by people from Olmec civilization.

8561 – Fart Knocker. Heh.

Went to the Seminole Casino on Coconut Creek as a mini-walkabout. I dropped a few bucks, trying slots, and I *really* don’t get it. I totally felt like a monkey pushing a bar to get a banana pellet…. the only trouble was, I had to feed the machine banana pellets to make it work. Poorly.

Not really on a par with the hard rock, but interesting to see the variety of machines and people doing the pushbutton thing. Retirees, doctor-types in scrubs, people smoking and eating chili dogs, all poking that spin button over and over again, putting in bills of all denominations, or the really hardcore just using some special sort of debit card.

I’ll just keep my banana pellets to myself, and cut out the pellet-stealing machine, thank you very much. My Fave machine to look at was was “Blues Brothers” themed… most were branded in some way, Wheel of Fortune, Monopoly, and Tobasco Hot Pepper sauce all had slot machines.

Poker was upstairs, and doubly smoky… I couldn’t find the high-speed bingo anywhere.

Odd that the Seminole Flag is very similar to the German Flag, but with a white bar on top. I guess there are only so many color combinations you can hit with stripes, before you have some replication going on.

Slept soundly last night, with odd dreams of being underwater.. maybe because the road trip in October might include the Georgia Aquarium, now? It’s so big that they have flippin’ whale sharks! Maybe I won’t have to wait until my last day on earth to visit a chunk of the great barrier reef, after all? A little scary… I saw Jaws 3-D, after all.

So ya want a Jedi Name young padawan?
Here’s How:

For the first part of the name take the first 3 letters of your last name and merge it with the first 2 letters of your first name. For the last name, take the first two letters of your mother’s maiden name and merge it with the first 3 letters of your hometown.

Here’s mine – vongr Rabro

(I suppose it could also technically be Bersc, Berpr, Bergr, vonsc, or vonpr due to my first name not really being my used name, and last name being all krauty and such)

I had no small amount of difficulty getting solid sleep yesterday morning – I had four different instances of being awakened just as I hit that deep, solid sleep phase… four jangled wide awakes while really snoozed out. Fortunately, I got a couple really solid ones last night, and a little naptime today will set me right!

Other recent addition to my synch (both itunes and psp)- refrederator – daily video podcast of vintage cartoons (Dover Boys [7/14/2006 – download] is an all time fave of mine)

“Unhand her, Dan Backslide! Unhand her, Dan Backslide! Unhand her, Dan Backslide!… (Say, we’re getting in a rut)… Stand up and fight, you coward, bully, cad, and thief!”

It seems someone bead me to the syndication of the site… a typo in the name, but that’s ok by me – refederator, but it looks like itunes is a lot more reliable than lj’s dodgy rss grabber.

Michael Jantzen’s Wind Pavilion is a nice facelift to the rotating apartments concept that debuted in Curitib, Brazil back in 2004. This particular version of the wind pavilion is proposed to be a lightweight structure primarily made of fabric to randomly rotate in the wind. Rotation would not only provide the building with an ever changing shape, but also electrical power to light the building. Michael proposes that the building could be made out of various materials and could take on many different functions such as an apartment complex.

8486 – from the “south wing”

First morning of Yoga went well, though I think I prefer the evening program so far. Taking things slow and easy, but I’ll be bendy as gumby in a bit.

Newt’s already started practicing, too. I dig the time stamp, 04:44:40.

On the Porch now – Newt got pretty excited about a little black squirrel on the outside balcony, but other than that, I’m just lounging outside and soaking up the humidity and enjoying the peace and quiet. Only real sounds are the fountain burbling and an odd rumble in the distance. Newt has since calmed down

Odd to watch Kids in the Hall unbleeped. Recorded back in the day when you could say “shit” on Canadian TV, but not on the Comedy Channel.

I haven’t planned a walkabout yet, but I think maybe a little journey to points west. Possibly doing putt-putt with mental_circles, home_grown_cl, and hedache tomorrow, if they recover from the Bowling for Soup concert tonight.

Forgot to mention that I went with Danny to a little comic book store in Boca Raton on Thursday. Quarter bins have given way to dollar bins. I picked up a few 1963 comics that had fallen by the wayside a move or two ago. A shame the Annual never made it to print. I was saddened to see that the Thing Series has come to an end. graypumpkin and kat78731 brought me a two or three issues when they were last in town, and I filled up to get all eight. The store’s Comic Book Guy(tm) said it was a fan favorite, but sales just weren’t enough to keep it alive.

Looks like a few of my flickr pictures are being published in schmap’s fort lauderdale guide!

8465 – this week is moving fast, despite my best efforts.

Minimum Wage (in Florida) is Currently $6.40. When I took my first Job at Taco Bell, it paid $3.35 and hour – That was back in 1985. (Starting wages at the library were a whopping $4.42, plus super insurance/etc bennies.) I wonder how well each state compares to cost of living expenses?

For “tipped employees” meeting eligibility requirements for the tip credit under the FLSA, employers may count tips actually received as wages under the FLSA, but the employer must pay “tipped employees” a direct wage in an amount equal to the minimum wage of $6.40 minus $3.02 (which, as required by Florida’s Constitution, is the 2003 tip credit existing under the FLSA), or a direct hourly wage of $3.38 on January 1, 2006.

San Fran, California is $8.50… Kansas is $2.65. Six States have no minimum wage laws.

Like the Federal wage and hour law, State law often exempts particular occupations or industries from the minimum labor standard generally applied to covered employment. This information often may be found at the websites maintained by State labor departments. Links to these websites are available at www.dol.gov/esa/contacts/state_of.htm.

We’re setting sail to a place on the map
From which no-one has ever returned
Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool
By the light of the crosses that burned
Drawn by the promise of the women and lace
And the gold and the cotton and pearls
It’s the place where they keep all the darkness you need
You sail away from the light of the world on this trip, baby

You will pay tomorrow
You’re gonna pay tomorrow
You will pay tomorrow

8400 – Never Fear, Scotto is here!

The clouds are wispy and fast-moving today.

I cut the dickens out of the sole of my foot yesterday, and got to take a little trip to the urgent care center near my house. Nothing too dramatic… keeping the foot and all toes. No stitches needed, but a bandage will protect a bit. I’m walking on it, so no big whoop. More blood than anything else – I cut it on the drain. That’s been repaired, so I don’t get a repeat.

Danny mentioned Las Vegas for a mini-vacation in July. I’m not a gambler, but there are cool things to do there. Not sure if I want to spend a coupld of hundred bucks on the cheese factor or not, but it could be a lot of fun.

Random Scotto statement – I can’t watch a hospital death scene without thinking of my father’s passing, and that pisses me off. I don’t like my gut punched by trite tv or movie theatrics. He died over sixteen years ago, and I’m still saddened that I won’t get another conversation with him.

I have a lot of memories of him in my life.

I’ve heard it said that the lessons we learn from pain are always the strongest. I don’t mind pain, if I can get it to stop, and it’s there for a reason that I can suss out.

Moment of lyric – (mp3 {and a lot of great stuff from Rubber Soul} found here)

There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more
