the hot dog murder- quincy grab02330

A recent acquisition – How come I don’t remember this episode of Quincy??

Posing as a prison pathologist, Quincy (Jack Klugman) conducts an investigation of the death of a convicted embezzler who was about to provide testimony against his mob bosses. The man’s death has been ruled accidental, but Quincy doesn’t believe it. The trick now is to figure out how a murder was committed in a maximum-security prison wing, without any tangible evidence (hint: the episode’s title is a key to the solution). This episode was originally scheduled to air on April 15, 1977.

I also went to get my crown and physical therapy today. Both went Well.

9507 – brevity.

Left work a bit early today to hit up physical therapy. Got some ultrasound, heat and electrical stim work done.

I think heat and stim combined are the most beneficial to me right now. I’ll likely go back to using the TENS box at home more frequently.

The exercises seem to be more beneficial – leg stretches, pelvic tilts, and some mild hip twists. – I did them when I got home, and I feel pretty good about it – let’s see how I feel with morning tightness in play. I’m a little concerned about how taut my back is going to be upon waking tomorrow – I’m pretty worn out, and will likely hit the sack shortly. I’m going to continue doing the yoga and just add to my nightly workout.

Watched Big Bang Theory, while eating a nice dose of leftover cabbage soup a la BHK and buttered bread knots – good stuff, perfect for a briskly chilly night. The cats are sure to be in bed with us this evening for the whole of the night, despite Newt and Pye’s evening house-run marathon habit.

Today was a good day, all told. My trepidation about going back to PT is fairly unwarranted, thus far.

Still feeling a smidgen overtired and generally weary.

I think it’s just been from all the hubbub at work and family-wise. I think being stressed about the bro has given me some clenched muscles and attitude issues, which I am trying to work with, too.

BHK made some awesome quiche for supper… I know how spoiled I am. Two types – broccoli and cheddar, and soy-sausage with mozzarella. Sides of potato cakes, and more broccoli & cheese.

Comfort food for a cool temperature evening. Good stuff.

I’m going back to my 8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 year ago archives soon – maybe this entry. I’ve been terribly lax about entries.. just been too busy.. or too tired from being too busy to write much.

Watched the first installment of Feasting on Waves. Alton Brown has a good gig going for him… getting his company to send him sailing around the Caribbean, sampling food and just taking in the life there.

doing archive now, reminded me that I got a flu shot again this year, last Saturday, along with allergy shots… and we saw Tina and Matt on the Boardwalk this time last year, too! When I mention getting a flu shot to people, most seem to say "Oh, I don’t do that" like it’s something terrible. I don’t know… they seem to work for me.

I’ll include more pictures from the ghost walk, corn maze and other goodies sooner or later – they’re all at my flickr account already – just a matter of putting them here.

Back to work. Busy busy, but BHK made an awesome vegetarian shepherd’s pie and I got to snuggle while watching Eureka, so all is right with the world for the moment.

Both myself and Chris a Rita’s cone on the way home – soft serve vanilla chocolate – Chris had straight up vanilla.

Not much else happened today (save for a possible big bang via graypumpkin), but that’s a good thing. Time seems to be flowing front to back, as usual.

Oh! There was some really awesome weather today!

This Afternoon: Partly sunny, with a high near 74. Northeast wind between 11 and 15 mph.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. East wind between 8 and 13 mph.

That made it nice to go out and breathe.

The McCain campaign has accused Barack Obama of sexism, saying the Illinois senator was talking about Sarah Palin when he mentioned “putting lipstick on a pig.” Obama responded that the phrase is just a tired old joke, to which McCain shot back, “WHO’S a tired old joke???”

I left work a bit late due to meeting, but from there BHK and I went to University of Maryland to hang out a bit before heading home.

Chili with Matt, Adam and BHK at Hard Times – drove around college park, visited his dorm, and BHK put a C**k-block on Adam vs Sarah our server by telling her he had a facebook and liked her, Saw the Kermit  / Jim Henson statue,  lots of squirrels, and tons of college kids going from place to place.

Interesting to revisit that sort of hive after being out of it for so long.

The Chili mac superior to Frito pie.. but I suspect they didn’t put the Frito pie in the properly sized bowl. If it had been in my mac bowl, it’d have been more than sufficient.

Chris passed the PMP exam – we’ll have to take her out to supper for that! (studied for it all week.)

Roller Derby episode of Psych and BHK fell asleep mid-view – good day overall.  Tomorrow is a busy day – g’nite for now, dear journal!

People have been saying that the new industrial grade swimsuits like the LZR Racer are worth their weight in gold. As you can see, this is clearly inaccurate. But such a suit is worth its weight in marijuana or industrial diamonds.

Sick right after lunch today – stomach cramps, vomiting and a bit of shakes afterward. I wish the bathroom at work was less centrally located.. I felt like I was broadcasting my problems to the whole office. Ah well… no helping that.

Watched season opener for Eureka last night and the start of Death at a Funeral. (spoilers on page – don’t read, unless you care to know.) Both were pretty standard fare for the genre, but entertaining nonetheless. Product placement in Eureka – interesting… I was surprised that we watched it last night -was rather expecting it to be a "see the whole season prerecorded after it’s ended" sort of thing. As for the movie, it’s always nice to see Peter Dinklage.

BHK made salad and queso for me, and had some left over chik-fil-a strips in hers… it smelled wonderful, and mine was delicious.

Not too many people to socialize with out here, and when they are available I’m pretty busy. After this primary project has been done, I can get back to visitors and whatnot.

BHK made tasty sausage (tofurky italian sausage for me) and veggies on whole wheat spaghetti with garlic bread. Yummitty yum yum! More tomorrow for lunch, and that’s fine by me!

Middleman tonight was fun – I don’t blame the aliens at all for minding our intrusion, and it was nifty seeing inside Ida’s noggin.

Joe Biden’s pro-RIAA, pro-FBI tech voting record

By choosing Joe Biden as their vice presidential candidate, the Democrats have selected a politician with a mixed record on technology who has spent most of his Senate career allied with the FBI and copyright holders, who ranks toward the bottom of CNET’s Technology Voters’ Guide, and whose anti-privacy legislation was actually responsible for the creation of PGP.

That’s probably okay with Barack Obama: Biden likely got the nod because of his foreign policy knowledge. The Delaware politician is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee who voted for the war in Iraq, and is reasonably well-known nationally after his presidential campaigns in 1988 and 2008.

In what could possibly be a major blow to a scientific consensus that has held for decades, recent research suggests that the traditional conception of Neanderthals being “stupider” than Homo sapiens may in fact be misleading. As articles about the research findings state, ‘early stone tool technologies developed by our species, Homo sapiens, were no more efficient than those used by Neanderthals.’ The data used in the study is available on-line along with a visual description of the process used.

Another *busybusy* day at work, but eased when I got home – BHK made supper of the remainder of the sloppy joe mix became taco salad fodder, with a side of veggie taquitos. Good stuff… BHK and I watched the Vampire Ventriloquist’s Dummy episode of Middleman – the show continues to shine. Venture brother’s first half was pretty spiffy, too.

Other things that brought cheer – seeing these kitty pictures in the archive… both were taken at the same time – both kitties sucking up as much sunlight as they could hold. Newt was totally whited out, and pye looks very comfy on the purple couch.

The nice folks at NPR have done us all a favor and taken some used Kinoki foot pads to be tested to see if they’d drawn anything out of a guinea pig reporter’s body. Guess what? They didn’t.

Reporter Sarah Varney bought some Kinoki foot pads and wore them to bed. She also subjected her husband to the (alleged) detox treatment. In the morning, they both awoke to the stinky brown mess that the advertisement had promised. Not convinced that the brown stuff had actually come from their bodies, our hero took the foot pads to a lab and had them analyzed and compared with unused pads.

“Compared to the blank that’s almost identical,” said the scientists. “It looks like three of the same sample, basically.”

A doctor from UC Berkeley confirms the scam diagnoses. Your body already eliminates “metabolic waste” and “toxins” through, um, other means…

“For many hundreds of thousands of years we’ve been successfully eliminating them through the usual means, which is urine and feces, and there has been no demonstrated need to accelerate that.”

So what is all that gunk in the pad? We’re not really sure, but it shows up if you hold the pad over a pot of boiling water. Who knew distilled water had “metabolic waste”?

Wednesday – 9396 –

I officially know more about Rsync than I ever thought I would. It’s a mighty handy tool.

Long story short –

rsync is written as a replacement for rcp and scp. One of the earliest applications of rsync was to implement mirroring or backup for multiple Unix clients onto a central Unix server using rsync/ssh and standard Unix accounts. With a scheduling utility such as cron, one can even schedule automated encrypted rsync-based mirroring between multiple host computers and a central server.

Currently doing a master <-> master -> offisite slave config.

Also set up a sql-based login system for both the primary and backup servers for ftp – annoying, as the backup’s mysql config is just different enough to give a man fits. in the data directory rather than usr.

Beefy mac & cheese (made with veggie-meat, of course) with the remains of the rattatouile and green beans made for good eats while BHK and I watched the Kevin Sorbo episode of Middleman. I want to start watching Dexter – BHK is about a season ahead of me. Time to put episodes on the PSP for the commute to work.

Follow up on the mayor’s “drug raid / dog shooting” indecent. He’s completely innocent, it seems. Prince George’s County Police really fouled up, in my opinion. That and the armed car chase through my neighborhood (well outside PG county jurisdiction) only adds to my problem with that organization. Some sort of Internal Affairs review needs to be done… but it seems unlikely.

“The mayor’s counsel also disputes authorities claims that they killed the dogs, Chase and Payton, because one of the dogs was coming at officers. Maloney says one dog was running away and the other was shot some distance from the front door.

Still, county law enforcement officials say they do not owe the Calvo’s an apology. Chief High defended the officers actions, but expressed regret over the death of the dogs.”

As someone that’s been at swat team gunpoint more than once… (06/02/2001 when my landlord went loopy with his guns over his face cancer and 02/24/2004 once when my bro committed “grand theft boat”.) – I can honestly say that sometimes the police has good reason to hold someone under potential deadly force. I’m thankful that neither I nor Newton were shot

Well, bro is right on the border of the 44 violation points rule. (he has exactly 44 points)(pdf info ) If convicted of all of his charges, he could either do under a year in county jail, or over a year in state prison.

from here

If total points are equal to or less than 44, the lowest permissible sentence is a non-state prison sanction (however state prison up to the statutory maximum can be imposed).

If total points exceed 44, the minimum sentence is established by taking the total point value subtracting 28 and decreasing the remaining value by 25%. This end result value is the lowest permissible prison sentence in months.

This means than only those offenders scoring 44 or less points may receive a non- state prison sanction under the code. All others must receive a state prison sanction, absent downward departure from this structure. The threshold under the guidelines for mandatory prison incarceration was 52 points.

and from here

The magic number is 44: Anyone scoring above 44 points “must” be sentenced to state prison under the Code. However, the plea bargaining process can a) reduce the number of counts charged, b) have an agreement not to score certain items, c) substitute charges, d) reduce the actual count charged, or e) several other creative techniques can be used to get someone sentenced to a non-incarcerative sentence. Note the departure grounds under Rule 3.992(b), but also note the actual language of the “Sentence Computation” because someone charged with a felony can be sentenced to state prison even if the score fewer than 44 points. For this reason, felony cases are always very serious legal matters.

For his Faces of Evil project, Hans Weishäupl made composite photographs of the world’s worst dictators by photographing hundreds of people in each dictator’s country and stitching them together. The results are a bit disturbing, particularly when viewing very large, clear, vibrant color photos of long-dead monsters like Stalin or Hitler. (via conscientious)

Matt Thompson has some advice for you: stop buying cheap-ish pseudo-generic drugs from Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and Duane Reade and start buying really cheap true generics.

As you might know, Benadryl (available at Walgreens.com for $5.29 for a box of 24 capsules) and Wal-dryl ($3.99 / 24 capsules) are otherwise known as “25 mg. of diphenhydramine HCI.” Compare [with the true generic available at Amazon]. Yes, that is 400 tablets containing 25 mg. of diphenhydramine HCI, for about $10 when you factor in shipping.

Heed his words. Here’s 300 tablets of generic Claritin for $11.00, 100 tablets of generic Zyrtec for $6.99, 240 tablets of generic Zantac, 1000 capsules of generic Benadryl for $20.34, 1000 tablets of generic Advil for $11.70, and 1000 caplets of generic Tylenol for $13.91.

9370 – Thursday –

Veggie-protein meatloaf, green beans from the garden and a simple salad made for a great dinner tonight, compliments of BHK.

Middleman was excellent, again. I wonder how long it’ll take them to run out of steam? Alien dictators and Boy Bands. So far, so good!

That’s about it for me today… Have some cool links du jour from around the web, dear journal!

Om Nom Nom Nom. – pictures badly photoshopped in paint to look like monsters eating things. Ah, simple pleasures.

Atari 2600 Label Maker – produces authentic looking Atari 2600 Labels including the famous “Picture Label” using your own image and title.

WASP Injection Knife – This weapon injects a freezing cold ball of compressed gas, approximately the size of a basketball, at 800psi nearly instantly. The effects of this injection will drop many of the world’s largest land predators.

Metro Hack –

Thieves took a legitimate paper Farecard with $40 in value, sliced the card’s magnetic strip into four lengthwise pieces, and then reattached one piece each to four separate defunct paper Farecards. The thieves then took the doctored Farecards to a Farecard machine and added fare, typically a nickel. By doing so, the doctored Farecard would go into the machine and a legitimate Farecard with the new value, $40.05, would come out.
