9258 – Tuesday

Back is feeling much better today. Not great, but only a low-level ache and tightness at the moment. The pills best used before bed as they make me sleepy and thus not suitable for work or any sharp thought-based activity during the day.

Still haven’t heard from brother since he was released from jail. I imagine that no news is good news…. I think I’ll call him tonight, though.

Yesterday afternoon while I was taking care of some issues, BHK ran to the nursery and picked up some veggies for us – Flowers : Ranunculus (look mostly like the Heart of Gold ), Some Red Cat Tails, a dozen ears of corn, and a big bag of zucchini. Local food for supper the next few days!

Also after work, BHK and I went to see The Forbidden Kingdom. I’d say that we both liked it – the settings and fight choreography were lovely, but I would really have loved to see what they’d have done in the 80’s, when they were both at physical prime. It was also a bit too… American, I guess. The bookends of “bullies chase kid with no ‘fu”, to “kid, now trained, defeats bullies” weakened the picture a bit. Overall, I was more than pleased, but it wasn’t as fantastic as I’d have hoped. Not in the same league as othe rcurrent wire fu flicks, but seeing Li and Chan together was pretty nifty… Plus, The Monkey King!

After the movie’s popcorn, we were ready for some serious supper time, and headed to Red Robin… we were seated between an old man who had a fragrance of tomato soup in a baby diaper and an adorable down’s syndrome baby.

That was ok, save for the distracting scent… but after waiting for about 10 minutes without seeing a server, I took it as a sign of possible things to come, and we left.

We made a beeline for Cheeburger2 and were seated immediately… placed our order, and chitty-chatted. The Trivial Pursuit cards at the table were ones we’d already done before, but that’s the risk we take by going there so often. Our server was seemingly inexperienced at her job… a little while after we placed our order, she came back to tell us that they were all out of veggie burgers. Apparently, neither BHK or I were slotted for the meal we were looking for tonight. We got ready to go, and the girl pleaded with us to stay – free milkshakes were offered. (Reasonable, since they were already made, waiting for our non-present main course to come to us.) We said that it was ok, but she begged us to stick around while she got her boss to make things right. Bogdan was there, acting as manager… we really can’t say no to him. He’s been our burger buddy since I first moved here, and BHK has known him longer than that. He gave us some other options, which worked out fine. I got a grilled portobello sammich and BHK did a cow-burger, both had the same toppings and treatment we wanted on the veggie-burgers.

The shakes were tasty, though not as thick, since they had time to melt while we waited… I got a chocolate mint (not as good as chocolate cherry), and BHK had a standard ol’ fashioned chocolate malt.

We made it home at about 9ish, BHK checked her email while I played a little TF2 (polishing my Heavy and Demoman skills) and Counterstrike.

Naughty Newt wouldn’t let BHK’s water alone… first he stuck his face close to it, and sneezed into the surface…. insuring that BHK wouldn’t be drinking any. With that, he lapped the contents until he wasn’t comfortable sticking his face inside the cup… so he put a paw in and pulled it over to drink from the puddle. BHK didn’t know that he’s fond of that little procedure. I guess she knows now. We went to bed shortly thereafter… reading turned swiftly to sleep.

Best thing about Gordon Ramsay is his insult factor. calling someone a doughnut, a pelican and a donkey.

I’m surely going to call someone a “silly pelican” sometime soon.

This morning, I remember a dream of disease outbreak – lots of panic – BHK and I were separated, don’t know where the cats went.

I was put on a bus to Schenectady (why Schenectady?), with one small carry-on bag. I was forbidden to bring any money, books, cell phone / electronics or shoes, with the understanding that I’d be subject to robbery and worse if I did so. I don’t remember what I did pack.. clothes and toiletries of some sort. I specifically recall bringing a roll of toilet paper and some pens and pencils. There was considerable fear and panic on the bus, but it wasn’t overcrowded. I had my own seat, and behind me was the skinny guy from The Big Bang Theory.

The skinny guy and I talked for a bit… more like he spoke and I tossed in a comment here and there in support of what he was saying. I don’t recall the exact nature of the conversation but there were certainly aspects of survival involved – something about safe water and how to make a solar oven was part of it. I was thirsty, and did not pack any water – there was a screeching or whooshing of air in my ears as we drove to our destination. Actor guy moved from the chair behind to sit next to me as there were two other fellows on his bench, pushing and shoving each other aggressively.

After our talk, skinny guy showed me that he was wearing an earring shaped like two horseshoes that were open, but closed enough that the second didn’t fall from the first. the beads were black. He took it out and stuck it in my ear, piercing it when he did… and put in another one back in his own ear… the only difference was that his now had gray beads instead. He said that it was protection for the area ahead, and also gave me a compass and a powerful magnet (that didn’t affect the compass, somehow) as a way to thank me because I wasn’t annoying. The men behind us had been listening wanted thier own, but he refused. “Sorry – you were annoying me. Anyway, I don’t have any more.” and then was killed – I couldn’t help him because I was back on the bus again, and he was in the parking lot, left far behind, shrieking as the two men tore him to pieces. I guess one of the men got the earring he had.

We stopped in Montana (must’ve been the long way, since we were going to NY from MD), where men in gas masks and carrying clipboards came on and took us outside one by one. We were lined up, and then everyone n the bus was killed except for me – deemed contagious, I suppose.

I was given food and water, and then told to walk from there. A broad expanse of grassy hills and green trees were ahead of me, with no path to be seen… but I walked, a deep sense of sadness hitting me with every step. I noted that the land was stunning, but empty without BHK and the boys with me… I began to wonder if I’d ever see them again- if somehow I’d been tricked and that this was a way of putting me in isolation.

I pulled a walking stick from a nearby branch and hit each tree, hoping to knock unseen fruit and to let nearby wildlife know I was coming… for whatever reason, I thought there were mountain lions in the woods.

Then I woke up to the alarm clock playing BHK’s IPOD, and I was snuggled in with her, the boys on the bed as well. So that’s a happy ending, anyhow.

9256 – sunday

In considerable pain today, the ol’ back is acting up, and meds are making me sleepy, but not soothing much… possible making me more irritable, as well. I’m glad tomorrow at work will have the bulk of senior staff off site, depending on my mood. I suspect some of the fresh pain might be due to the changing weather… lots of rain tonight and last.

BHK took great care of me today – we watched Sweeney Todd over leftover cabbage soup and toasted cheese bagels (bhk opted for leftover Mexican food), prior to that, we did a little pre-planting of our garden – seeds of broccoli, bell pepper, zucchini and pumpkin are in small covered racks under our bench in the living room… hopefully away from prying kitty paws.

Last night’s episode of SNL noted some pretty glaring aspects of Greased Lightning (click link at own risk) – look up the lyrics to it, if you’re wondering why so few schools perform it.

BHK is making some surprise supper… smells good, but I have no idea what it is yet. [Update – it was veggie brats, kraut and green peppers! victory is mine!]

Closed the night watching a special on Pixar – how they got started, Disney issues, etc… pretty good! I knew the bulk of the tale, but it was interesting to see clips of the animations and add faces to the names I knew. BHK pointed out that Brad Bird does look a lot like the bad guy in the Incredibles – I doubt that was a coincidence.

We missed Maryland day on Saturday… so much for one of 50,000 cupcakes ! I bet Adam had a grand time, though.

Random silver spring pictures from the pda – I should’ve used this on the get-together!

9252 – humpeee-humpday

Ugh, stressful cat-herding day today, but I think we’re almost out of the woods now. We’ll see what tomorrow’s mail brings. I’ve had a colossal headache since about 10am, but it’s finally beginning to fade.

Yummy supper with Chris and BHK – BHK made grilled cheese and we ate a veggie plate and leftover split-pea soup. Quite an excellent repast. We watched Titus, The Gorilla King on Nature afterward, once Larry made it to our place. Quite good, and I think that Gorilla babies (or of any age really) are adorable.

BHK is getting into Dexter – I haven’t had a chance to really check it out yet, but the series is available to view on Netflix, at least the first season with the second one arriving shortly. Maybe I’ll download it and watch it one the PSP during transit. Of course, I still haven’t even caught up with Corner Gas, Chuck, Masterpiece and whatever else is being tivo’ed upstairs. I suppose that one day I’ll be snowed in for a week without internet and we’ll catch up.

This is interesting research: given a security patch, can you automatically reverse-engineer the security vulnerability that is being patched and create exploit code to exploit it?

Turns out you can.

What does this mean?

Attackers can simply wait for a patch to be released, use these techniques, and with reasonable chance, produce a working exploit within seconds. Coupled with a worm, all vulnerable hosts could be compromised before most are even aware a patch is available, let alone download it. Thus, Microsoft should redesign Windows Update. We propose solutions which prevent several possible schemes, some of which could be done with existing technology.

The MacBook’s mysterious WiFi dropout problem is still unsolved

Despite Apple’s recent spate of Airport updates, complaints on discussion boards keep climbing over long-standing problems with MacBooks and MacBook Pros holding their WiFi connection. While the WiFi technology chain is complex and problems can be transient, Apple is taking a quality-assurance beating on this issue.

Highlights-

Forget 802.11N. A number of posts suggested that moving backwards to 802.11G or 802.11B fixes the problem. Of course, it’s not as fast as the N mode. You must set your wireless router to the slower mode.

Check the WiFi channel. Some users said that other wireless routers in the neighborhood appeared to be causing interference that can bother the MacBook.

9241 – Wednesday

Got home, showed BHK where the PSP charger was, and we gamed for about a half hour… She played Luxor, while I just got to Black Mesa East in HL2. (For a 4 year old game, I’m digging it – I’ve never played it, so it’s new to me… the only distraction is the voicework… Lou Gossett Jr and Robert Guillome are very distinct.) I’ll miss the airboat portion of the game… I had a lot of fun tooling around the canals.

Crashed out right after supper last night – 9pm and zonk! out like a light. I don’t even really remember what was on tv… Oh, right, Samantha who. It’s a cute show, but I get the feeling that it’s already jumped the shark.

Dinner was tasty leftovers – Stuffed peppers and pizza.

Quite enjoying all the loot I’m getting at http://drop.io/scottobear ! Thanks, dear journal!

D’oh! I’m going to have to miss seeing Tally Hall tomorrow night… I’d rather catch them than the pope! I’m not braving that traffic, even if the Beatles were jamming with the Grateful Dead (including George, John, and Jerry)

Good ol’ Banana Man. I also dig Good Day.

9236 – Saturday

After work yesterday, we intended to visit to Larry’s School and watch The Scarlet Pimpernel. No such luck- timing was against us, so we just grabbed some Mama Lucia’s pasta, and went home.

I’ve had very restless sleep lately, maybe getting only 2 or 3 good hours in a night. I’m hoping to play a little catch-up this weekend, and get my body back into a reasonable schedule.

Hard to say for sure, because it is dang nice outside lately.

BHK trotted out Hacienda today, and we played the analog (rather than online ) version.. she beat me soundly (by >40 points!), but now I have a better grip on the rules. She’ll continue to beat me, no doubt, but it’ll be more of a challenge for her.

Still waiting to spring Wishes Were Fishes… maybe tomorrow!

So… what ever happened to the Doom Patrol Movie, anyway? The TBA was set for 2008 . Hm. Says 2009 here. (They bought the rights in 2006.)

Ah Well, it’d be hard for me to see Cliff Steele and Negative Man (plus whatever other combo they dream up) in a live-action setting. Too surreal, maybe.

I’m still all for it, in almost any permutation, as long as it has Robotman, and Monsieur Mallah & The Brain. (Of course, I’d prefer Grant Morrison’s Team of Crazy Jane, Rebis, Robotman, The Chief (Not the Head) and with backup of Dorothy Spinner, Joshua Clay and Danny the Street, if possible.) Please leave all of the Rachel Pollack aping of Morrison’s run out, especially how she snuffed out Cliff and Jane’s relationship.

Sure, while I’m at it, hire me as an extra for a million dollars a day, plus craft service.

Side Note – it was rather neat to see a Larry Trainor cameo in Justice League: New Frontier.

Doom Patrol and GP’s more oddball games were some of my favorites – Z-squad, FOCUS and the like (Even HHH, for its brief existence) added a touch of the sinister and surreal to otherwise fairly boring fare. Funny how back in the day I’d have enjoyed identifying with Cliff or Josh, or even RPing an analogue – Rebis would be something too alien or powerful to be anything but a GM device, I think.. unless you were playing a very low powered one, and just let the ref take control every here and again. (Of which I’m also not too partial – I prefer to play my own characters.)
Best times were with miniMAX, but Zero, Run-around Sue and Le Grenouille were not too bad for a one or “two shot” quickie. I hear that they’re doing a Brave & the Bold cartoon – teaming Batman up with an assortment of “Hero of the week” types – Green Arrow, Blue Beetle, Aquaman, and whoever else they can toss in there. Funny about no mention of Superman. I really like the look of the art – silver-agey – kid friendly but still cool. Maybe they’ll work in elongated man or the Martian Manhunter, for a nice light hearted but solid detective episode. Looks like Batman will be in every episode, so it’s unlikely I’ll ge t acool Hawkman / Atom story, but who knows where it’ll go if successful? I really dug the Justice League and the transition it took to JLU – maybe lightning can strike twice.

Those were some of my most enjoyable games, GP running while Kat and I played – solid “Buddy Movie” dynamic, with plenty of time to get characterization and limelight in for everyone, every episode. Green Lantern & Dr. Mid-nite (I always wanted to see her Doc Mid-nite get together with Robin – perfect wholesome super-couple, miniMAX & Ghost, Trism & Kyoko (with sidekicks). I miss those games, sometimes – it was good, clean fun – you didn’t have to beat something up every session, and it wasn’t a bunch of fan wank, either.

9231 – Tuesday.

BHK and I aren’t watching as much TV as usual… I suspect we’re hitting an ebb tide right now. However, things may change once the new shows start rolling in again. I believe that there was a new Samantha, Who on last night, and I imagine that once Psych and Burn Notice start to roll again, we’ll be watching at least a few hours a week.

After supper last night, we came home, had some razzles and read (or did Internet research on the Tidal Basin Inlet Bridge – had to find out what was up with this sculpture/grotesque on the side.)

50 things you’ve done meme continues at 47 – I…

47.’built more than a few models as a kid. Not always well-done…. but I always did ’em to completion, even if some got the lighter treatment for “battle damage”. At my youngest, I did snap-together models of cars that could be played with right afterward – pretty rewarding… the more advanced ones like aircraft carriers and tanks always had guns and tiny airplanes that would easily fall off or break if played with too roughly…. plus, dust and dirt wrecked paint jobs.

This might be why I’m a little attracted to Warhammer or just painting minis. Models you can play with are something extra special. I still don’t know if I want to do Warhammer Fantasy or some other system… meanwhile, I may just get some paints and work on army men / mage knight leftover figures that could use a little color or customization. I’m due to make BHK and myself some updated figures, as I don’t have long hair anymore, and I never did make one of her.

Maybe it’s time for us to investigate Fimo and the like, too? Image on the right is an ancient one of Danny and me fending off a few zombies on a papercraft bridge.

Help me. I have the “One Day At A Time” theme stuck in my head.

This is it! This. Is. It.

This is life, the one you get
So go and have a ball.

This is it! This. Is. It.

Straight ahead and rest assured
You can’t be sure at all.

So while you’re here enjoy the view
Keep on doing what you do
So hold on tight we’ll muddle through
One day at a time, One day at a time.

So up on your feet. Up on your feet
Somewhere there’s music playing.
Don’t you worry none
We’ll just take it like it comes.

One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.

Body mightily resisted getting out of bed this morning, but I had to do it. Home now… only 4 more days until the next weekend!

Chris drove me to my stop this AM, but BHK picked me up. It’s hard to spend even 8 hours away from her, after I’ve been so spoiled by a 3-day weekend. We zipped to California Tortilla for dindin, and now we’re going to have a lovely night!

It’s getting warmer, and the trees are getting greener every day. Sure, I’ll be hot and sweaty sometime soon.. but then we’ll have fireflies.

Every season has something awesome.

9223 – Thursday

Long weekend starts tonight! BHK and I had yummy pseudo-chicken, noodles and broccoli supper. After work today, I think we’re going to hit a movie and dinner out… nice way to start the long weekend. Despite my general disdain for reality tv, I’m sort of digging Last Restaurant Standing. (I’m rooting for Lloyd and Adowa, but suspect that the Twins will win.)

meme – via kat78731 (I’ve done ones similar, but not this particular quiz, surprisingly.)

What do people call you?: Scott, Scotto, Hey You, Bear, Big Guy.

What color is your hair?: Brown with a lot of gray in it.

Is it natural?: Yup, save for the periodic cutting.

How is it styled right now?: Brushed back, short, but in need of a trim.

Do you have allergies?: Most anything alive that can hit me in particle form. Dander, pollen, etc.

Do you have any other medical issues?: Back and leg, primarily. Some pneumatic trouble with allergies.

What are you doing tomorrow?: I don’t know for sure, but BHK and I have the day off together! Wheeeee!!

What are you doing this weekend?: some walkabout, some layabout, mostly funabout.

Do you have a job?: Yupperdoodle.

What was the last thing you bought?: Hm. Groceries at Safeway, I think. Last fun thing was a warhammer rulebook.

How good is your eyesight?: Sharp.

What color is your mailbox?: black with a red flag and silver numbers. Alternately, a silver door with a brass lock.

How many windows are in your room?: Bedroom has 3 windows. Home office-lair has 8 or more.

What color are your bedroom walls?: White

What color are your sheets?: Tan

What color is the carpet?: neutral gray

Do you stalk people?: not in person, but I certainly see what they’re up to online. I like journals and seeing photos of folks.

Have you ever had a stalker?: Sorta-kinda. Nothing serious, but they “got all up in my business” a few times.

What was the last thing you ate?: Tasty bowl of strawberry chex cereal.

Is your handwriting neat or sloppy?: Pretty dang messy, unless I make an effort.

Are you a slob?: I’m cluttery. I don’t leave food out, but I often lack the sense to put stuff back where I found ’em.

What do you spend a lot of money on?: General purpose items like groceries and fuel, mostly. We don’t pay to eat out very often, and our daytrips mostly just cost time and gasoline.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?: um… 3 for work (2 black, 1 brown), 1 black crocs, 2 pairs of sneakers, a pair of flip-flops. so… 7.

Do you sleep with the door open or closed?: the bedroom door open, the house doors closed. Kitties need to get to and from bed!

Do you sleep with the closet doors open or closed?: closed – don’t want kitties getting into the crawlspace.

Who was better: N*Sync or Backstreet Boys?: I have exactly the same lack of feeling about both of ’em.

When was the last time you took a shower?: This morning.

What does your mom do for a living?: Working for herself with her husband, renovating and selling condos. Also does real estate.

Where is your dad right now?: Physically – Last scattered as ash over the Atlantic ocean.

Who is the prettiest person you know?: BHK!

What are you listening to right now?: Outdoor noises… I think it’s a mix of peeper frogs and a bluejay.

What does your favorite shirt look like?: That I own.. probably my comfy blue ringer T with the skull and ace of spades on it. I like my black cuban shirt
with the white embroidery on it, too.

Do you read a lot?: about an hour a day, minimum. (Commute)

Do you write a lot?: mostly in my lj… I should really spend a better chunk of the above commute writing.

What’s the biggest age difference between you and someone you’ve dated?: 11 years.

What was your favorite thing to do when you were little?: Read or play in the woods.

Where were you born?: in a hospital.

Would you ever shave your head?: I would if need be, but I don’t think that’d be a good look for me.

Do people tell you that you’re attractive?: Some have, but it doesn’t happen daily or anything.

Do you wear a lot of makeup?: not any!

What time do you get up in the morning?: weekdays – ~5am. weekends, whenever the kitties or BHK wake me up with hubbub.

Do you like your school?: I enjoyed college well enough.

Piercings?: No perforations that weren’t accidental or medical in nature.

Who was the last person you kissed?: BHK

Who was the last person you hugged?: BHK

Who was the last person you rode with in a car?: BHK

Would you ever go bungee jumping?: I think not, given my back, weight, and general trust in folks that run thrill-rides off of bridges.

Would you ever travel to a country without indoor plumbing?: Sure. I’ve been camping. I wouldn’t want to spend too much time in squalor, though.

Do you like people?: The ones that aren’t the aforementioned stupid, careless, and/or sinister people, yes. Sadly, folks like that appear to be in limited
supply.

Yummy Quiche & Salad for supper last night… more for lunch today! Took it Easy last night. some forgettable TV and read more of Mignola’s Baltimore, or The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire. Slow at first but it’s rolling along reasonably well now.

Rhyss made a pretty nifty observation in his journal –

The New York Times did a story about relationships torpedoed by a incompatibility in taste in books.

“We’ve all been there. Or some of us have. Anyone who cares about books has at some point confronted the Pushkin problem: when a missed — or misguided — literary reference makes it chillingly clear that a romance is going nowhere fast.”

Which got me thinking – what books do I have that would be most likely to send a prospective date running for the door, never to be seen again?

Actually, most of my GFs have been of a similar mindset where reading is concerned… but I have always liked nerd / geek / Rockabetty types.

Here are 10 of my “scare off potential ‘normal girl’ dates” books currently on the shelf – I’ll leave it to BHK to do her own books, if she desires.

[edit -later] I tried, and failed. I have very little truly objectionable material – I couldn’t get to 10. Instead, here’s a grouping of what you might find weird or not on the shelves.

  1. Encyclopedia of Occultism – I’m sure someone will get the wrong message there! (I’m pretty much a non-believer in that sort of stuff, but I love folklore / mythology.. many tomes of that type of thing)
  2. Rats – a History (actually, BHK and I both had a copy on the shelf, until we gave one to David!) Lots of history.
  3. A bunch of gaming books. (Warhammer rules just recently picked up)
  4. A bunch of Science Fiction (Nerd!)
  5. Books about Primate Psychology – Monkey Politics
  6. A Bunch of 40s detective novels.
  7. Stacks of books that have yet been unread. BHK and I hit the book sales pretty hard, and our queue is long… and we lengthen it by using the libray, too!
  8. Books in varying states of repair, from ragged, well-loved ones, to previously mentioned unopened tomes.
  9. Books about weird people-places-things.
  10. blank page book for coloring, with pencils of many shades.

Have you ever wondered how the Enterprise would fare against a Star Destroyer, or how a Halo sizes up to a the Moon? Have you ever tried to guess just how big a Dyson Sphere would have to be to encompass the Earth’s orbit around the sun? Jeff Russell has, and that’s why he built Starship Dimensions, a website devoted to cataloging and contrasting the minutiae of Science Fiction’s massives. In it you will find a library of vehicles spanning decades of Science Fiction movies and series, all meticulously drawn in proportion to each other. “Scale has always fascinated me,” says Russell. “It is an important, yet often misunderstood or neglected way in which everything in our universe relates. And of course I’ve always really wanted my own Death Star, so naturally I wanted to know how big it really was, or how many Star Destroyers I could fit in it.”

Similar, is the skyscraper page. (I’m glad that I could find Emerson tower info. The proper name for the Bromo-Seltzer Clock.)

Happy first day of Spring!!

 S6301505

Egg-dying went well… the white spots denote 4 eggs that cracked, and the ones TM took home for herself and MO. Adam took one – he’ll be giving it to a girl at school – and he certainly enjoyed the fajitas that BHK made. Larry and Chris (and mostly Adam and Tina, too) spent the bulk of the visit glued to the tube while BHK and I did the majority of coloring. My faves are the family eggs (there’s a Scotto, BHK, Pye and Newt in the mix) as well as a couple of oddballs – speckeld ones and hot pink / green… both of which are more vibrant than this photo shows. more in depth pictures later, possibly.

GP‘s got me interested in Encounter Critical. It’s by S. John Ross, an added bonus (I dig the mechanics of Risus, though I’ve never played it.)

I really want the cell phone legislation banning use of a handset while driving in Maryland to pass. The beltway is rough enough without people crimping necks and not looking at the road. Whatever happened to the idea of pulling over to talk?

I’d love to see some sort of magic technology that blocks non-emergency cell phone use in the driver’s side of a car while the wheels are moving.

Same goes for the front-seat DVD players, and audio systems that go louder than a range of safely hearing what’s going on outside of the vehicle, as far as I’m concerned. Color me a fascist, but I don’t need anyone being more distracted than they already are… If I could find a way to implement a breathalyser / urine tester for safe driving, I’d probably do that, too. And bumper-transponders that forbid tailgating based on the speed of the vehicles in question.

Heck, just use my magical wishing ring to stop all accidents – one of my characters, miniMAX first developed his size-changing abilities by trying to develop desolidity tech for vehicles… they never crash into one another!

After all those years, I still want a hyper-intelligent 4-inch tall talking ape to be my lab partner in fighting crime and solving the world’s ills… or clean, safe teleportation technology. Or a magic wishing ring that can put people in protective bubbles, and heal them when they’re hurt.

Thoughts about this is coming from the fact that I’m having trouble feeling a lot of sympathy for TM’s uncle…. he apparently tried to kill himself by driving his car into oncoming traffic. Seriously… I understand being in pain and lashing out, but there are *PEOPLE* driving and acting as passengers in the other cars! If you want to off yourself, I have no problem with that… but leave everyone else out of it.

I feel bad for TM, though – she’s been dealing with his nonsense for a long time, and right before this happened, she blew him off via the phone, and her other family did the same. I don’t know all the details, but I hope that once he’s out of the hospital he gets worthwhile treatment, and a maximum sentence for attempted suicide / attempted vehicular homicide / assault with a deadly weapon(car). I know his head is full of bad wiring, but I’m finding it very hard to forgive his behavior, no matter how sick he is. I just have to understand that he’s not in his right mind, and hope that he is removed from driving and doing anything that can hurt anyone else until he is sufficiently repaired.

Some entries are only a line or two long, others are entire short stories, continued across a few posts, because each entry only holds a maximum of 65,535 bytes. (That’s about 16,000 4-letter words.) The journal will be 8 years old in just under two months.

39.’has owned scottobear.com since 1998… that was 10 years ago, March 12. It will need to be renewed again before March 11, 2013. I’ve got some time to scrape up the money to do so… it’s pretty dang cheap. My website’s look has changed a few times over the years, as has the content under the hood… it is quite due for a fresh coat of paint, and a revisit to the links contained inside. I started my first website with ol’ geocities in 94-ish, back when it was free, and before it was owned by yahoo. that arcane url is lost to me, maybe forever? Who knows if I can dig it up form the web sometime? either way, it was migrated to scottobear.com about 4 years later, and has remained there ever since.

From assorted sources (vchip, mgk, time) – a photo series of rival Kenyan tribes fighting for land with bows and arrows.

Look closely. This is Kenya, specifically a hill overlooking the Olmelil Valley, where Maasai warriors are clashing with members of the Kalenjin tribe on a regular basis. The tribal violence is a depressing comment on a country that only a year ago was promoted as a stable democracy in volatile West Africa. TIME has an interesting photo journal of the battles.

“We were using swords but they were not effective,” says Sylvester, 24, slashing a knife in the air. “In a day we can make between 80 and 100 [arrows],” he adds, refusing to give his last name out of fear. Community members pool money together to buy the necessary tools in secret; the arrows are then distributed within the neighborhood. Local leaders know about the arrow factories, but police forces do not.

Victims with arrows, sometimes poisoned, lodged in their heads and chests have become increasingly common“, say officials in Rift Valley hospitals.

“We cannot know the time of day when they (Kalenjins) will come. If they catch you off guard, you’re dead,” says Samuel, 25, holding a bundle of ready arrows.

Kalenjin elders train their boys how to use bows and arrows from an early age, the Kikuyu men say. But Kikuyus have had to learn quickly to fight back with the same tools. Several secret workshops employing 50 workers churn out bows and arrows for munition. “We have no other choice for now,” he says.

50 things I’ve done meme continues with item 37. I…

37.’was the data librarian for the Atari computer club, back when Atari actually made a home computer or twelve that were actually useful as office-type gizmo as well as game machines. I had an 800XL with a bank of happy chip modded 1050 floppy drives that I used for a BBS, but I also had an Atari ST, that I learned the bulk of my first usable programming knowledge on. (LOGO on the TI-99/4a notwithstanding – come to think of it, I did some Spirograph stuff on the ST, too.) When the club dissolved, I was left with a huge crate of free software… including some nifty CAD stuff, and a pile of MIDI music software. I dabbled for a while with both, but the programming was more interesting to me at the time. I suspect if you asked me now, I’d be fooling with a keyboard and midi cables. I built my first homebrew sound digitizer on the ST, and used it mostly to do startup, shutdown noises.. not to mention the occasional silly soundboard program.

Via sci-fi scanner – Doctor Who Originally Conceived As an Insane, Malevolent LSD Junkie

Everyone knows Doctor Who: He’s the malignant alien time-traveler hopping around the galaxy in an invisible UFO, right? With eyes filled with madness and a heart dripping with hate, he constantly pops tabs of LSD to relive the horrors of his immortal past. When he’s not under the throes of a hallucinogen-induced bender, he is using his time-traveling UFO to pop into the past and stop the caveman from inventing the wheel, Isaac Newton from discovering gravity and Gutenberg from inventing the printing press… all to consolidate a horrific vision of the future that is entirely of his insane devising. Right? Right?

Well, no, of course not: The good Doctor is a benevolent force who hops around the universe in his TARDIS, trying to do good deeds and help the people he loves whenever possible. But bizarrely, this was not the original idea for Doctor Who, as the notes coming out of the BBC’s archives make clear. Rather, he was originally brainstormed to be an insane, malevolent LSD junkie.

“A feature of the new Doctor will be the humour along the lines of the sardonic humour of Sherlock Holmes. The metaphysical change which takes place over 500 years or so is a horrifying experience… in which he relives some of the unendurable moments of his long life…” the archives read. “It’s as if he has had the LSD drug and instead of experiencing the kicks, he has the hell and dank horror which can be its effect.”

Needless to say, the producer shot this idea down, giving us the good Doctor we’ve all grown to love. But, my god. I would kill for this vision of the Doctor: an insane, time-traveling Dr. Gregory House.

A reactionary on a bad LSD trip – Doctor Who?

9191 – tuesday

Watched the last two episodes of Alien in America while BHK snoozed on my arm last night – pretty good.

BHK got some nerds jelly beans (sold as “giant chewy nerds”) when we went to Aardvark last weekend.

The Orange were my Fave, Green were hers. (as is our usual) The crunch really added something – I liked them a lot more than standard jellybean fare, even though I like jelly belly soda-pop flavors quite a bit, too.

On the C7 bus this morning, we passed another bus (R3) with the front banner flashing “call 911 – emergency, call police” on the front. I alerted my driver, and she said that it’s a common accident – the other guy likely pressed the alarm button by accident and doesn’t know better. I suggested that she call the station just to be sure, and she stated that it wouldn’t be needed… someone else is bound to do it.

That puzzled me… what if the guy were in actual trouble? I got off the bus and contacted to police to let them know… they haven’t called me back. I wonder if they’re even following up on it?

I figure it’s better be safe than sorry… If I see a sign that says “HELP!!”, I’m going to act on it – especially if it’s as simple as dialing 3 numbers on my phone.

Ten year old obit that never gets old –

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.

Larry LaPrise, the man that wrote “The Hokey Pokey” died peacefully at the age of 83.

The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin.

They put his left leg in.

And then the trouble started.

Jumper‘s getting quite the stinky reviews. Maybe we’ll just wait and catch it on Netflix when it drops to DVD… next weekend. 15%… by comparison, Hottie & the nottie got 7%. if it’s only barely twice as good as a Paris Hilton vehicle, I’ll pass. Jumper got 15 positive reviews and 88 negatives as of this writing.

I’m still game to see No Country for Old Men. – 94%, 179 positive, 11 negative reviews.

The Pentagon will try to shoot down a spy satellite before it crashes to Earth. I want to see the video of that.

Princeton engineers’ weather modeling suggests that the city of Baltimore experienced about 30 percent more rainfall than the region it occupies would have experienced had there been no buildings where the city now sits. While thunderstorms are thought of as being purely forces of nature, the research suggests that man’s built environment can radically alter a storm’s life cycle.

1up has a list of what game companies have donated to which candidates – sort of interesting to see which designers / folks went where.

data gathered via fundrace – a really nifty tool to see what’s up – my zip code shows $840 dollars went to Republicans, and $0 to Democrats, while my in-laws city (right next door) donated $3,426 to Republicans and $1,800 to Democrats

Austin, TX is a little more happy to spend on both sides… it is a bigger city… I was surprised that it spent just a little bit less than Miami.

The ride home on the subway wasn’t too bad… did a lot of people take today off, to recover form the Superbowl?

Speaking of which – It looked like Jordin Sparks was lip-syncing at the Superbowl yesterday, but it could just be a delay between the audio and video but it had a prerecorded feel – she wasn’t selling it… I wonder why more people haven’t commented on that, and the weird stock-footage air show? Tom Petty did a good job, and everything lined up audio and video-wise. I wasn’t crazy about fake fans rushing his stage… he really is turning into an old mountaineer, facially.

Dinner was eggplant lasagna… BHK made a tasty meal, despite being all sick… We’re tucking into bed shortly to rest up.

The birthday cake is even better left over… sort of like a hostess cupcake with the white whipped icing as filling.
