Funny.. SoFlaChris and I discovered Plazes within about 5 minutes of one another. Newtcam was added.

On the way to the meeting yesterday, a 16-wheeler ran over a piece of steel, which spun off to the right, and caused Elsie’s window to explode into the cab of the car. She was lucky… it took a big divot out of her doorframe. If it had hit an inch earlier, she’d probably be at least in the hospital right now. Fortunately, she’s unhurt. I got a spray of tiny glass fragments in my lap, too. I think this’ll be a good opportunity to clean out her car.

Brush fire caused me to bail out of SL unceremoniously. Launched an evac, and looks like folks are all ok.

Kat and GP have been so quiet since returning from vacation… only a post and a couple of comments from Kat. I hope they return to regular lj’ing soon!

These mustache tattoos made me think of GP & Kat. I admit that I was a tempted a smidgen by the idea, m’self.

Adopt Sea Turtles for Mother’s Day!

A mother sea turtle will travel thousands of miles to move from feeding areas to mating areas and then to her preferred beach to lay her eggs.

It is a long crawl up the sandy beach where she makes her nest before she swims back to sea. Wouldn’t your mom travel such great lengths for you as well? This Mother’s Day, show her how much you appreciate all she’s done for you with an adoption of a sea turtle from WWF’s Online Adoption Center.

Second life has been running slow as molasses lately.. no packet loss so I’m a bit befuddled about the slowdown.

8315 – Saturday.

Meeting with the momster after Fatima cleans up the joint this morning. Maybe do lunch together and gab more about the current familial hubbub.

Another morning on the porch to come. I may need to get a box fan to put out there, before the summertime hits in full.

Moment of lyric (youtube video)

When I was surrounded by the world you were the only one who came
And you were the only one astounded who has kept me grounded
As the other girls thrashed my very name

Then I looked over just in time to see her smiling back at me
And saying everything’s OK as long as you’re inside my blue veins
Your blue veins

Yeah and the feeling that you gave me no matter what I do or where I go
It always will remain
And those who would enslave me to get to me must get past you and will have no luck
Cause you’ll protect me from all pain (that’s true, yeah, but)

The most beautiful, yeah the most beautiful thing cause anything else can’t compare?
Must be the blood that’s running through your blue veins
Your blue veins

Your blue veins

And I know you won’t deceive me like the rest and there’s nothing you need to explain
You always were the first one to believe me when I said to you girl
I think it’s gonna rain
But I could be wrong

Yeah but all of these things all these things they’re all truly nice
but ain’t nothing ain’t nothing compared to the love that’s running through your little blue veins

Full day today. Possible trip to dentist, chores, mom visit, maybe dinner with the crew at W’s if the timing works? Speaking of Dinner… I could stand a little breakfast. Time to forage. Until later, dear journal. As always, Newtcam should be live.

Aw, phooey… Monday again, eh? Weekend evaporated like fog on a hot day. Had lunch with the Mom and her gang at Sweet Tomatoes, and came home to an overlong nap… Sunday was completely wiped off the map as a result. Danny tried to call me from the Atlanta arport, but both phones he was using were wrecked, microphone-wise. Good to know he made it in ok, however.

I’m not a big fan of recent SNL, but the video bits, and smigel’s tv funhouse animation segments still can shock and awe a bit. Last weekend’s “Disney Vault” bit was pretty awesomely horrid.

Lost was the best one in a while last Wednesday. Some decent acting, and set pieces.

Designed a mega-trampoline for 2nd Life, and it seemed to go over well with the 3 Sirens crowd. Launch and sound works well, but you still land with a heck of a thump. version 2.5 will be a bit more gentle. Timmy Turtle’s pursuit mode is more realistic, too. (if you outrun him, and another person is closer, he’ll home in on them.)

Well, I went and got a Nikon coolpix l2 (the 6 megapixel version)at office depot on sale.. got a 1 gig memory card to go with it. I’m no pro, so this should hold me for quite some time.

Sometime this weekend, I’m going to hit the tree zoo, or do some camera-safari-type action. not sure if I’ll do it today or tomorrow, depending on which way the wind blows.

Camera also has a video making capability, see Newt Chase a paper wad here. (Kindly ignore the pile of socks visible at the end… I was preparing laundry piles when I got distracted and decided to play with Newt instead.

8253 – quick recap

Samuel L Jackson on Ellen on SNAKES ON A PLANE (youtube)

St. Patty’s plans got sacked for me at the last minute, this time, Mom and Wilt just had far too much to handle before launching this morning for parts south. Instead, I opted to go to Bonefish Mac’s, a place run by one of RR’s pals. IT was pretty festive and fun, though it wasn’t terribly Irish…. no green beer, though I did have a couple of Heinekins in green bottles with my grilled cheese and veggie-wich. Met some friendly folk there, and Bethany gave me her digits. (Ulterior motives, though – she needs her computer updated. Still, she’s nice, and fun to talk to, so it’d be good to get a buddy that’s a local.)

Was reminded that I can get tossed into a crew of random-folk and come out of it with a lot of comfortable conversation. That was a big win, and there were no real jerky-types at all… only one downer guy, Robert, a tile-worker / carpenter from Pennsylvania, having trouble finding work. I cave him Wilt’s card for renovations, etc… maybe he’s worth a shot as labor. He’ll have to wait a week for Wilt to return, but aside from that, I think Robert’s chances are good for finding a basic gig.

Tilt-o-whirl Bears

POV Pirateship ride

POV Flying Bobs

Honestly, none of the videos thrill me, but I had fun taking pictures. I autostitched a few just for grins. I’m surprised my piecemeal feris wheel didn’t work out, but others seemed to blend pretty well.

While on walkabout yesterday, I ambled north on federal Highway, just to see what I might see. As I passed the IHOP (30 minute wait…Sunday morning pancake crowd is thick.) I saw a ferris wheel rising up over the steeple of the St. Ambrose Church. Nothing was moving yet, but as I drew near, more goodies came into view. Hungry from lack of flapjacks, and with visions of funnel cake dancing in my head, I sauntered over to take a closer look.

The guy doing parking informed me that the fair wasn’t going to get rolling until 1pm, but I was welcome to roam around. (The time at that point was 11am) I took advantage by walking the grounds, and taking some pictures of all the rides and stuff before anyone was around, queued up, or whatnot.

I was bad, food-wise.

  • Roasted ear of corn. $2
  • Funnel cake $2
  • French Fries mit der cheese $3
  • a bake sale brownie $1
  • about 2 liters of soda pop.(a $1 can at a time) $5

I did not eat the deep fried snickers bar that one stand was selling. I mean, I have my limits.

Highlights of the day was playing bingo (I spent $18, and won $12 of it back), Winning the 4pm 50/50 raffle – spent $6 for 5 tickets, got $148 back.

Entertainment was mediocre, an overly loud dj, and some stage band.

Let’s see, other money spent – $15 for a all day ride wristband.
$5 for another 6 raffle tickets (chance to win $2500.. they’ll call if the winner isn’t present)
$5 for a basketball hoop shooting carny game.. I won Newt a stuffed tiger (on Newtcam, at the moment) Sunk 5 balls out of 7. ($1 a toss, or $5 for 7)

So.. Amount spent – $48. / Amount brought in – $160.

Net profit for walkabout – $112, a stuffed tiger, some color on my nose and cheeks, lighter hair, and probably about 4 lbs before walking calorie burn-off. Not a bad day!

Moment of Lyric (mp3)

First I learned to crawl
Then some other strokes
I can never remember any real good jokes
Do you feel like swimming?
Yes right now yes right now
I know a way to swim all the way downtown
It’s a lot like swimming first time over your head
It gets easier when you move your arms & legs
And for air you lift your head
Why don’t we try it right now?
Yes right now Yes right now
We’ll go by way of the garden fat with tomatoes and beans on the vine
Sweet like the way it was like swimming for the very first time…

8224 – Spore

Why didn’t anyone tell me about Spore sooner? veblefetzer hosted this gameplay video, and I’m pretty dang impressed. Now *that*’s my kind of sandbox.

The game allows the player to begin with developing a creature as a cellular entity and eventually creating a creature with more sophisticated brain functions, which will change the nature of the game to a more RTS-type game (he cited a particular favorite of his, Populous), where players will control herds of creatures. Once you upgrade the “hut” around which the creatures centralize, the game changes into what he called “a simple version of SimCity” where the player manages technology and interacts with other cities that have sprung up around the world.

The creature creation tool is quite simply amazing, not to mention the programming that regulates (automatically!) how the creatures walk, run and move

He demonstrated how the player can eventually purchase a UFO to travel between planets–and eventually star systems–to populate, conquer, or simply observe. Particularly impressive was the game’s emergent gameplay and seemingly infinite possibilities for playing creatively

Geotarget

Definitely worth a BANGS!

    8171 – Scotto hears a Who!

I saw an owl on the school fence, walking home from the bus stop last night. It was super cute… a tiny thing, maybe the size of a can of soda-pop… I was a little shocked, because I think of Owls as big birds of prey The bird looked like a brown and white feathered capsule, with huge yellow eyes and long skinny legs. I stopped in my tracks and admired it for a moment and then went to take a picture. It took off before I could snag him, but I found a very close approximation… it was a burrowing owl! (The mascot of my old university) Apparently they don’t get very large, so I doubt what I saw was a baby though it looked babyish to me at the time.

    burrow owl

He flew off into this tree, outside of my view. The creepy yellow light looked nifty and I had the palmtop out, so I took a picture.

    owl-tree

It’s odd… I think of owls as these huge predators, but this guy would’ve had trouble with a rat, I think. Maybe an anole or a mouse is more his speed. I’ll be coming back to see if I can spot him again. I really love living close to this sort of wildlife.

That Space piggy picture got well over 3500 hits over the course of 12 hours yesterday…that’s more hits than my coverage of the hurricane back in October, and I thought that was nuts. I wonder if someone else linked to it, because only a couple of dozen bounced through my journal-site to that page.

Made plans to go see Wicked with Danny some time in the weeks ahead. I’m looking quite forward to it, though I wonder how much he’ll like it. It was his idea, so groovy. Yikes.. I wonder how much he’ll balk when he finds out they’re between $109 and $225 per seat? I suspect I might be flying solo. A bit more expensive than the $5 seats for Arsenic and Old Lace at his school.

Pretty Keen – estimate to price of any address.

    Floating wind turbines

The Magenn Power Air Rotor System (MARS) is an innovative lighter-than-air tethered device that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, efficiently generating clean renewable electrical energy at a lower cost than all competing systems.

    magenn wind turbine

The magenn flying wind turbine is held up by helium generating 4Kw,enough to power your needs. It costs around $10,000, but it could pay for itself in about 6 years depending on how you use it. It’s anchored by a tether that can extend up to 1,000 feet above ground. Generally, 400 feet is enough to catch the minimum 3 meters/sec wind speed needed to sustain a nice supply of electricity. No towers or heavy foundations are necessary and sizes range from small “backpack” models to large megawatt generating devices.
