6862 – And still I wait.

Well, I was hoping to go for a walk this morning… get out of the containment field that is the house. No luck.. the wind outside is at a very strong level, and the rain is coming down in sheets.

Dan’s working on grading, and Jan’s watching TV evangelists, so I figure I’ll feed my own obsessive action by working on the journal a little bit this morn. I prefer to read Real Live Preacher to watching any carnival barker on the tube.

Jan’s making cranberry scones for breakfast this morning…they smell really good.

Though the hurricane is moving exceedingly slow, I have high hopes that I’ll be home tonight, or at worst tomorrow morning. I’m looking forward to sleeping in my own bed and having the apartment to myself (and Newtself). Though it’s a two-bedroom house, three people tend to bump into one another a lot.

I have a half-gallon of ice cream in the freezer at home…I wonder if power stayed on long enough to keep it ice-creamy.

Latest reports are that there are 2 million people without power, and Frances is now downgraded to Category 1.

6760 – museum pix, waiting for news on my condo, misc

The condo owners are out of town… silly for them to list it and not be available until later, but, whatever. I’ll know more today, I think.

Did the guy that invented combos see a snausage, and think it would be tasty for people to have a snack like that.. or was it the other way around, benefiting dogs?

Intelligent observation overheard ages ago – “Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.”

I can’t believe that a single packet of ramen noodles is considered to be “three servings”. That’s almost as bad as the “two fig newtons per serving” rule. Who decides this stuff? Very full people who aren’t so hungry and don’t like the product?

Random ramen factoids –

  • “Ramen” is the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese characters lo mein, which means “boiled noodles.”
  • Ramen was popularized in Japan by a 17th century samurai named Mito Komon. You can see Mito’s actual ramen bowl and a reproduction of his favorite meal in the Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum in Osaka, Japan. The museum that attracts 1500 visitors a day–more than Japan’s national art museum.

I’m in the mood to watch the Rockford Files again.

Random Scotto Factoid: I had trouble remembering the difference between definitions for vertical and diagonal, until I learned the word vertigo. Likewise, horizontal was never a problem, because I already knew the word horizon. I learn better by association, rather than simply by rote.

6757 – put a bid down…

Last night I reviewed and put a bid down on a condo. Nice neighborhood, the place is a very roomy one bedroom (much bigger than my last apartment, let along my little studio) in excellent physical shape, and in a nice neighborhood.

I’ll know if my offer was accepted this afternoon…it just came on the market yesterday morning, and nobody was in line in front of me, as far as I know.

I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Hm… I thought that they weren’t doing any more There-upgrades, but I just got notification that I’m back in the beta, and it’s been upgraded. Maybe it’s not going dark as soon as I thought.

Yet More Vizcaya

6755 – Journey, part 3 – brides, brides everywhere, and not a one to wed

Many women in bridal gowns or the like were there on Saturday. I suspect a photo shoot for a magazine, but there wasn’t a lot of camera technology there.. just handheld cameras, none of those wacky reflector-umbrellas, makeup folks or people with light meters that I saw at the last shoot I witnessed in Fort Lauderdale. Maybe they didn’t need it with all of the natural light as nice as it was? Maybe the production values were just lower. In any event, they added a nice ambiance to the visit.

More Pictures, mostly of women in gowns and gardens

6754 – Journey, part 2 – Vandals, Statues, Lego

O Muse!
Sing in me, and through me tell the story
Of that man skilled in all the ways of contending,
A wanderer, harried for years on end…

Something worth mentioning about the trip of Saturday… It seemed like every common room had large white urns in them, with remains of someone or other inside. It was interesting at first and later became almost the theme of the house, which was fairly ostentatious.. makes Cinderella’s castle look like a grass shack.

I had hoped that the misting garden was open, but it wasn’t.. it’s a great way to cool off if you don’t mind getting a little wet.

Assorted Statuary from the Vizcaya Trip

6753 – The day out was lovely, though hot and steamy.

HAPPY 4th of JULY! I know I’m glad to be as free as I am.

So, Vizcaya it was. I walked the house (sadly, no photography inside was allowed) Outside, however, is another story entirely… so, I took a lot of pictures. )though, not all the pictures below are mine) There was *so* much statuary, and such extensive Mediterranean gardens that I could’ve stayed there all day… but the beating of the sun got to me after walking around in it from late morning to about 3pm, even with the cool breeze off of the water, and the gigantic fruit smoothie I was gunning down at a record pace.

Something nifty was that there was either a photo-shoot for a bridal magazine going on, or three different wives-to-be were all being captured on film in different parts of the outside, too. At times, it seemed as if I couldn’t take a picture without snagging a gal in a white dress and gloves someplace in the shot. (and I took a few deliberate shots, too… it’s to the gal’s merit how composed they were in the aforementioned super-sun beams. There was also a “Red White & Blue” celebration planned for the evening, with some rasta-guys working the soundboard. Unfortunately, I wasn’t up to staying there to the 9pm launch time.

I took so many photos that it’ll take me a while to sort the wheat from the chaff. I’ll toss in a few each entry as I go through ’em. Explanations of each are beneath the picture in question.

The Journey Begins

6667 Make way for ducklings

Dang… big ol’ rainstorm last night! Looks like it’s going to be big and wet the rest of the week.

Lots of piccies this entry. Took a few with my palm, hated them, and went back with my regular one to compare contrast.

I think it’s adorable that ducklings will orbit mama duck… venture foo to explore, but as soon as anything unusual happens, they run like a unit back to mama.

Some ducky-pictures, and a couple of others:

11:30 am

En route to the Robin Rodriguez meeting… Thinking about old speedy Gonzales cartoons with “Slowpoke Rodriguez” and his pistol. How racist would folks find that character today? I’d heard that the cartoon network withheld showing speedy for a while, come to think of it. Not sure if that’s true. When I worked at the library, Theresa Rodriguez rightfully had the moniker of slowpoke… Brent dubbed her that, I think. She was the assistant in the kids department and very sweet. Perfect height for the job…maybe 4’10 or so? She was one of the elves when I acted as a Santa’s helper at BBCL. (5 times… I’ve put on the red suit about 9 or10 times for kids since the 7th grade)

12:27 pm

Note to others about self – don’t confuse courtesy with subservience. Some folks think I do nice things out of obligation rather than just being nice. Nuh-uh.

12:36pm

Robin and Al aren’t too late… They just pulled in.

2:32 pm

The meeting went well, and I got a free lunch out of the deal. Lots of industry gossip was passed around. Told about Dave & Cathi’s baby getting bigger and cuter... Wally’s crookedness, new company and upcoming trial, Vic fired or leaving Nordis (I’m more and more glad that didn’t pan.) the rack is working with MM now and gave a good review of me… As did Cobden and Brian at MCS. MM is in Fort Lauderdale, another bonus.

I pull an 8-8 TAG shift this coming Sunday but have Saturday off! Looks like lunch with ldy is surely on!

4:18 pm

riding the bus… I can’t believe how wrong some folks are with judgments. I smile pleasantly at a young lady and the look that she throws back at me is the kind you’d give to a dog that might bite if it got off its leash. I’m glad that most little kids can see that I’m a nice guy anyhow. Too many predators in the world today… Makes for skittish people. If that girl knew me, she’d know that I’m as gentle as a lamb unless provoked by violence or cruelty. Plus, I’m not “cruising for the booty”.

Pictures from today’s journey to the Lunch meeting.

f-in’ a, man. *snort*

She checks the pipe, while I tighten the lug nutsWeirdo dreams last night… I dreamt that I was a professional shopper.. one of those guys that goes to stores, buys something, and then appraises the salespeople. I was pretty nice overall, but got mad when a lady figured out who I was, and tried to bribe me with free hats.

Hmm.. I was hasty on judging the Newtcam dead… it looks ok this morn… I guess it’s just spotty. (I’m still getting a new one, soon.)

Egads! There’s a Cap’n Crunch and (even better) Jean La Foote action figure! I wonder if Jean’ll be at the toy fair this thanksgiving.

Regarding the picture… It’s my sweetheart and me working on the steam-powered battle tank… Let’s see the zombies get through this! Undead meanies… if there are any mummies, they’ll be dry enough to use for fuel!

The BBC has won a court case against the Metropolitan Police over the trademark of the TARDIS…er, police box.

Good news… We’re switching insurance companies at last…and the dental is staying as is. I got a refund on my aflack I discontinued the service, but they never stopped pulling it from my paycheck. All better now! Posted an update to the automatic writing thing in the original entry… I heartily recommend anyone being a member there leave before the association is made. (well, perhaps that’s too harsh. I just think that the moderator there is a bee-itch.)

Picture of my bike on the front of the route 60 cut because of friend’s list deformation

I’m going to write you a reality check…or would you prefer the cold, hard cash of truth? -The Tick

Wow, Wachovia lets you do things *easily*

I set up a nice checking/savings system over the web, and I got a human to call me back in about an hour to verify stuff.. it’ll be open by Tuesday for me to drop my funds into. easy as pie.

Off to a good start, unlike the lamebrains at Washington mutual. Service means something to me… service with better interest rates.. yum!

Tomorrow’s Journey…I’m going to head out at approximately 11 am for Lost realms… (the gaming store that Mark works at now) I may take Dave or the Bro with… I invited Sappho, and by extension, Riker, but I don’t think that they’re going to come along.

If by bus (should Dave not be able to go – )
Route 81 to Lauderhill Mall,
From there take the 18 North to Boca (Sandalfoot & 441)

Lost Realms – 23066 sandalfoot Drive (maybe a short walk to get to it from the stop.)

Pick up Zombies game, Zombies 2, and bag o’ glow in the dark zombies. plus maybe some terrain, craft supplies and whatever impulse buy crosses my path. Oh, and a New bus pass…this one dies on the 20th.

Here’s what I could have, if only I responded to spam sent to me today – (this is just from 5pm on, I purged my email then)

  • FIXED term Mortgage at 3.25%, Never Again! (Two of these)

Rather cool out this morning…. quite nice, really. Tomorrow, I’m going to remember the GPS, and measure my downhill speed over the drawbridge. I suspect that I’m hitting 25ish mph there. (But I could be vastly overestimating) Note to big-breasted women with too-small bras… the “split-boobie foursome” look isn’t good. Find a top that fits, please. I worry that a too-tight brassiere is cutting off circulation, or is painful in some way.

This weekend I’m swinging by PPF to pick up a bag of 100 glow in the dark zombies, and the Zombies!!! game… a friend there is giving me an employee discount, where he’s throwing in the extra zombie-bag for free! I’ve got to make a point to send a few zombies to friends and family.

Some maintenance guys doing yard work out back… Newt’s fascinated. It’s impressive to me that he’s not frightened of the noise. I think that if he got near a blower, he’d take off, though.

A pic of newt from a few months ago... I'm thinking of submitting it to kittypix or color theory

Spiky, sporadic dreams last night… I don’t remember them too well, because I neglected to commit them to memory right as I woke. I do remember that they were pleasant for the most part, but some adrenaline in there, too.

I’m air?
