9082 – tuesday

So windy yesterday and today, that the windows in the building are creaking… sounds like a ship at sea. One of my coworkers claims that she can feel the building move.. I’m not that sensitive to motion – the tower seems pretty dang sturdy to me.

Somehow I doubt this will happen here any time soon, let alone this. Sakes… was Wilma two years ago, already?

We’ve been pretty fortunate, storm-wise lately. One Ice storm on Valentine’s Day… what more reason do you need to stay indoors?

BHK picked me up from work, rather than have me take the Metro home… That shaved 2 hours off of my commute – more quality time with the Missus. We stopped off at *$ for cocoa, and then grabbed a little California Tortilla for take home… watched open season with the in-laws and then played a little classic mario bros before retiring.

The Doodleboard in my website’s toybox is getting a little activity again.. I dig the two newest pix.

Odd that my wordpress backup journal has already gotten a half dozen spam-hits (all removed by akismet before publishing.) just random gibberish, no links or anything.

9080 – Sunday

Spent the day pretty much on my back or in a chair, semi-stupefied by painkillers. I seem to do better when I’m moving around a little bit… after 8 hours in bed, getting up first thing in the morning can be quite difficult, at best. After making my way to the shower, I loosened up considerably.

Watched some TV and played some Wii… that’s about all. We started to watch The Number 23, but we sacked it 35 minutes in. No point in wasting any more time… the thing just couldn’t take off for us. That’s pretty sad – I’ve always liked the 23 enigma. The narrative and the acting didn’t go with my aching back and sleepy head.

BHK kept an eye on me for most of the day, but went off with her folks to decorate the blue house, for the holidays – they got rained out before making it back to our HQ. Looks like our lights may be going up next weekend.

There’s a real chance of snow next week! I hope it’s the good kind… no trouble with traffic, just pretty.

My eyes have been forming tears quite a bit lately. I wonder if there’s something in the air, or if it’s just an unconscious reaction to the pain?

Minor grinchiness… Please stop trotting out Easter stuff during the Christmas Season. I don’t need to see the symbol of Crucifixion next to a little baby in a manger. How about celebrating one miracle at a time, eh? Come back with that crown of thorns stuff in March or April. Maybe that’s just my quirk… I know that I don’t mind the secular stuff, like Santa in the Manger. Santa on the cross is pretty dang tacky.

9061 – wed

The fog this morning was insane. View from my office looked like the windows were frosted.

BHK’s falafel tonight hit just the right spot!

Test of blog2blog worked well… I copied all of the public entries over to my alternate wordpress site, in case of lj collapse. (Not like that’s going to happen, but it’s nice to have an archive.) I’ll still continue to post here, but I think I’ll do periodic slides over to the other location, to keep the backups fresh.

It took a long time to move 9000+ articles over, but not as long as I’d thought. Downside is that it doesn’t take comments or tags with it, but the internal search engine at WP is pretty darn solid. Added bonus, the comment and page tracking is a lot more up to snuff. Note – Save your entries on a file locally… makes it a lot easier to catch up if something happens mid-process. Voice posts, lj-embeds and lj-polls also don’t travel well, for obvious reasons.

The Ghost of Foghorn Leghorn Speaks of Unrequited Love

I said, listen to me, boy. Only the stars know.
And now you, fidgeting in all the air
like you fear for your neck. Still,
you’re young and youth explains away all,
except love. My love. I’ve a gift
but not for this. It speaks like a house fire.

Or a bullet into a bowl of oatmeal. If fired,
you’ve got a mess. And I do, I know,
and not one I thought I wanted, like a gift.
Stay with me, son. I’m not wasting air
for your benefit alone. I said, that’s all,
and walked off, shaking. It’s hard to be still.

It’s hard to know how to be still.
When I was little I felt I’d catch fire
if I was too quiet. Nothing’s changed at all.
There’s nothing worse than to know
my smoke signals go unheeded in the air—
she won’t look, speak, accept the gift

I made for her. Her going is my gift.
All that I’ll keep. Out to an old still
I’d go and drink until I forget it’s air
I need to live, air that fills me now like fire
nothing can douse. For all I know,
the ground beneath me is burned beyond all

knowing. Any of this getting through all
that thick head, boy? Love isn’t a gift.
Way off, you’re way off. I know
you hope it’s feathers flying and time stood still,
crowing from the roof, and gun-fire
meant to silence your song on the night air.

You’re not listening. That’s just hot air.
It’s torture. You’re finished, once and for all.
You might as well be old rags in a fire.
I’ll say it again: love wasn’t a gift
when I fell flat and hard upon it, and still,
I won’t dare let it go. It’s all I know—

like the air or the sound of my voice, my gift,
all bluster and not a bit of it still.
This fire could burn me alive. Who’d know?

9056 – sat

Started while I wait for my ride home from the Allergist – In honor of it being the tenth –

Ten Things I really like:

1. Road Trips / Walkabouts. (especially with BHK) – It’s always fun to explore and discover new places… or even new things about a place you’ve visited a hundred times before. Additionally, the journey is often more fun than the destination. Grab a bagel, and out for a new adventure!

2. Almost the opposite of #1 – Lounging around the house, not leaving all day long. Having a headquarters full of love, entertainment, food and climate control is pretty dang appealing.

3. Change of seasons – I love, love, love seeing the Yellow-Green Spring change to Dark Green Summer to all of the Autumn colors… only to have the trees go bare and then start again. Snow is fantastic… I see just enough to want more, but not so much that it’s a peril or a nuisance.

4. Rain / Snow / Fog – Precipitation. Rain generally means that things are cooling off, being fed, getting life. (I suspect that video will be fodder for BHK in her “we should get some ducks” argument.) I’ve long preferred traveling in a mist or fog, especially on a hike. I enjoy a traditional “nice day“, too. Let’s just say I like most weather – anything that doesn’t kill me or make me sweat too much is good in my book.

5. monkeys and robots almost equally… Monkeys have a higher spiffy factor due to the biological aspect, I think. Emotion, awe, chaos are all pretty amazing stuff. That said, streamlined new-style and old school aluminum robots alike are pretty keen, even the unfriendly ones that want to destroy we humans for being a fleshy parasite on the surface of the globe.

6. Learning new things – That was really the other third of gaming that I enjoyed quite a lot – along with the social side, and imagination stretching. I love to learn new bits of things, from reading or a live good teacher, preferably. Wiki / Google is a good start, but I’ve found that developing skills from a more interactive knowledge source speeds things along for me. Example – How to make country-style “cat head” (called so based on size and relative shape, not ingredients) biscuits this weekend from Larry.

7. My new family unit. Duh. BHK, Pye and Newt make every day one with elements of love, affection and care. Extended family is also nice – I dig my in-laws quite a bit. Both are people I can learn and grow with in a very positive way.

8. Playing Games. Boardgames, Role playing games, video games… trifles that promote both social and brain activity are something to embrace. I don’t like solitaire games so much… seems to lack something. Even Video games are better if you’re playing them with a human cooperative or competitor-type next to you, or on-line somewhere. Even in those cases, a LAN party in the same room works better for me… however, the upside of on-line play is you can cut connection any time you like, and play in your jammies… (well, you can do that in person, too – depending.) The social aspect has to be with people I enjoy being around… I can’t get into gaming just for gaming’s sake.

9. Kind people. Folks that go out of their way to be respectful and helpful while not being a doormat. I’ve been really blessed to know and have known a huge number of terrific people… more than I suspect is average. Surrounding yourself with good folks is a fun way to learn about being kind yourself. Hanging out with an assortment of geeks, hippies, gamers and just general fans of being nice has helped me to become a better person, I think.

10. Helping others (see #9, above). I really like to do good works. I’m long overdue to donate some blood… one of the easiest acts of charity I can perform. I feel good when I believe that I’ve done something to make someone’s life better. I try to offer a kind word or make at least a simple gesture whenever I can. I get immediate feedback for it, even if the person isn’t grateful… how they react isn’t as big a deal as is the process involved for me.

chilly morning – waiting at the train station for my shuttle to arrive saw me trying to blow smoke rings with just hot breath. I couldn’t do it – not sure if it can be done… but it is fun watching steam flow slowly from your nostrils. You can pretend to be Fin Fang Foom, spraying acidic mist at imaginary foes.

Dinner was nice, but I had very little appetite – wrote my brother a letter, gently asking him not to stay in Broward county, but instead to try starting his life fresh in points north – maybe Tampa. A toxic “support system” awaits if he returns to Hollywood and its environs.

Random bit of fun – the other day I saw a cyclist riding around on a penny-farthing bicycle… in helmet, spandex shorts and so on. I would’ve almost preferred to see a bowler hat and waxed moustache, but the clash of modern and historical was even better, I think.

Halloweenie Survey –

Childhood

What is the first costume you remember wearing?
Masque of the Red Death

What was your favorite costume?
Tin foil robot was a fun one… glowstick eyes!

Not houses… but we did egg some kids that were mean to us… see above. We got punished – rightfully so.

Did you steal other kids candy?
Nope… but I did make some trades that seemed awfully in my favor – I give you my smarties, and you give me your fun size snicker bars? sure!

Misc Questions

If you were a character in a horror movie, would you survive?
I hope so! I’d probably be the “safe guy” that dies after you think the monster was dispatched, but really wasn’t.

Would you live in a house that was rumored to be haunted?
Sure… I’d at least check it out.

Would you live in a house where someone had been murdered?
As long as the killer wasn’t around to repeat the crime, sure.

No, I don’t.

What is something that will haunt you for the rest of your life?

Have you ever seen a dead body, other than in a funeral home?
Yup.

Were you afraid to go in the ocean after you saw Jaws?
I was, but I was a little kid! I got over it in under a week.

Would you eat a human if your life depended on it?
Probably. I hope I never have to find out.

What was your last nightmare?
I dreamed that my body was made of plastic squares, and pieces were left behind wherever I went… I was worried that I’d run out, because I couldn’t put the acrylic/lego type squares back on.

Sleep next to a dead body.

The Small Press Expo will be held in Bethesda this weekend, Friday and Saturday. SPX is the biggest gathering of independent comic artists and cartoonists on the east coast and will feature many local artists from DC, Maryland and Virginia. I’ve got other plans (birthday party – even more fun, and pre-scheduled)

Movies I haven’t seen yet, but wouldn’t mind catching in the theater while they’re still out –

3:10 to Yuma
Darjeeling Limited
Michael Clayton
Eastern Promises
We Own The Night
The Dark Is Rising – yikes… really poor reviews. Maybe not.

Whoops – Dragon Wars movie is already kaput? That didn’t take long. I guess it’s just as well.

No movie tonight, however. We’re preparing for the previously mentioned party for Bugah and Em’s… we’re going to be pulling the in-laws and louise in tow, so it should be a humdinger.

* The Guardian reports on which books 2,000 readers have chosen as the Greatest Love Story of All Time, based on a poll sponsored by the UKTV Drama Channel.

The Top Ten list looks like this:

  1. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, 1847
  2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, 1813
  3. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, 1597
  4. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, 1847
  5. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, 1936
  6. The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje, 1992
  7. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, 1938
  8. Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak, 1957
  9. Lady Chatterley’s Lover by DH Lawrence, 1928
  10. Far from The Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, 1874

Marin Kettle responds in The Guardian with “If Wuthering Heights is a love story, Hamlet is a sitcom.”

After such a long, hot week, that was some beautiful weekend, wasn’t it? And apparently, the beauty of the weekend is spilling out on to Monday morning: Karl Rove, President Bush’s controversial deputy chief of staff and senior political adviser, will resign at the end of August. After he packs up his Palisades home and heads back to the Texas Hill Country, Rove will reportedly leave politics and plans to write a book about the Bush years — do you still get to claim executive privilege when your job involves working in your slippers?

One year until 08/08/08!

I found out today that the family across the street from us has lived in that house for the last 23 or so years. Adam, the youngest son at age 18 has lived in the same home his whole life. I wonder how often that happens anymore? I don’t think I’ve put more than five years of life in the same building – I didn’t even spend more than 2 years in the same school until I hit 9th grade as my folks moved around quite a bit.

I’m not sure I can even imagine how intimately familiar a person comes to be with that sort of environment… that kid must know every stone and fence within a 10-mile area. He must’ve seen some very significant changes over the last two decades.. North Beach was a bit of a biker town before it got an influx of bay front property money. There is quite a cultural microcosm these days, but the upper-middle class seems to be taking the lead.

Today’s weather is *evil* – Current Temperature is 100°F, “feels like” 109. And that’s at “partly cloudy”. How much hotter would it be with full-bore sun?

Totally random thought formed on the train – do the words cowherd (someone who herds cows) and coward (someone who shows fear in the face of danger) have a connection? I need to research that.

[edit – Well, I guess not. Word History: A coward is one who “turns tail.” The word comes from Old French couart, coart, “coward,” and is related to Italian codardo, “coward.” Couart is formed from coe, a northern French dialectal variant of cue, “tail” (from Latin cda), to which the derogatory suffix -ard was added. This suffix appears in bastard, laggard, and sluggard, to name a few. A coward may also be one with his tail between his legs. In heraldry a lion couard, “cowardly lion,” was depicted with his tail between his legs. So a coward may be one with his tail hidden between his legs or one who turns tail and runs like a rabbit, with his tail showing.]

To complete my nerd hat-trick, I want to see the Transformers movie on an IMAX screen. Sadly, it seems the local Smithsonian IMAX theaters aren’t doing it. The Baltimore Science Center is, but that’s a bit of a haul.

Stolen wholesale from Matt (his summer jukebox is fantastic, too, by the way)- The mafia wants your ass, so you’ve gotta hide out in a shady hotel on the wrong side of the tracks for the next two nights. You’ve got a backpack. What’s inside? This should cover your food, drink, entertainment and protection. (feel free to answer in the comments) Alternately, if you think that the mafia is imaginary, pretend there are Zombies outside instead – you expect the infection to go dormant / be rescued in 2 days.

Took the train home – not too bad! c7 bus to greenbelt, get off at Suitland, and then rode with bhk home. (I can take the Suitland bus to about 6 blocks from home too, if need be.)

8901 – Monday

Restless night sleeping, accidentally booted Newt off the bed once, but he stuck with me throughout the night. BHK was restless too, but I didn’t leg-sweep her out. Pye visited briefly, but high-tailed it after the barest commotion. I dreamt that BHK and I were hunting animals, tagging them for reference, and re-releasing ’em into the wild. A side effect of geocaching, perhaps?

Bugah & Neil went fishing – to no avail, as the water was too choppy.

Half day tomorrow! North Beach Fireworks are going to be something else!

via jwz – Search for Lonesome George mate is long shot

While scientists search for a mate for “Lonesome George” — the last known survivor of a species of Galapagos tortoise — some say the effort to fend off extinction may be in vain. Even if a mate is found, George has not been interested in reproducing in the past and may not know how, former keepers and others who have worked with him said.

“He has problems … he probably never saw a female and male of his own species reproducing,” said Swiss biologist Sveva Grigioni, who worked with George 13 years ago.

Grigioni, now back in Switzerland, said she could normally get tortoises to ejaculate within minutes, but spent months manually stimulating George and never extracted semen from him.

Age is not George’s problem. He is estimated at between 60 and 90 years old, and could live to be 200 and still reproduce, scientists say.

The visual differences in tortoises from different islands were among the features of the Galapagos that helped 19th Century British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution. Since then, the tortoises have been hunted by pirates for their meat and their habitat eaten away by goats introduced onto the islands. George, who weighs 198 pounds, was found on Pinta in 1971.

Reviewing Openads for the company’s ad server for the web. it seems pretty reputable and reliable, thus far.

Fire drill this morning was a welcome break in the day – cool outside, everyone seemed laid back and calm – helped move the rest of the time that much more rapidly. the 2pm meeting went well… lots of good information for me to ruminate over the next few projects. I really dig that I’m in an environment that will allow me to use the skills I have! (Last gig wasn’t bad, but a lot of repetition. This time, there’s a lot of room for creative thought along with brute force.

Day closed with S’mores over a fire pit, some preview fireworks, and then Bugah and I played a bit of “Destroy All Humans”. Not a bad thing.

It was broiling outside at midday… 95, but “feels like” 101! That’s some hot, swampy, yuck outside. Days like this are when I’m glad I’m not a roofer. I’m glad it’ll rain later on… hopefully that will cool things down a smidgen.

Danny and BHK went to see knocked up… both said that I dodged a bullet by going to work instead. Danny gave it a 4. Considering the fact that there were a couple of cute girls in it to ratchet the film up about 2 points, it must’ve really been terrible. BHK gave it a 1, saying that it’s possibly one of the two worst movies she’s ever seen. The two women behind them walked out of the movie, which is what BHK feels that I would’ve done.

I’m surprised; because those are the first two negative reviews I’ve heard about it. Hopefully BHK and I will have a better time with the new Die Hard movie. (or FF2 [even if doom is the weak point], Spidey 3, or Pirates 3, all of which neither of us has seen) It’s been a span since we last saw anything in the theater… Shrek 3, I think. I wouldn’t mind checking out 1408, for that matter.

Danny really enjoyed Shaolin Soccer, however. It is hard to say which he preferred between that and Kung Fu Hustle.
I hope he had a good time while he visited… he sure seemed to, save for a lot of commuting time and that just couldn’t be helped. He was a good sport about some minor tribulations, like the very hot green curry – BHK made some awesome mac & cheese which should obliterate any unhappy mouth-scalding memories. He got on well with BHK and Pye… declaring Pyewacket his favorite cat ever. Newton was a bit gruff with him, suspected so because Danny’s arrival almost always signaled my departure.

I was a little concerned about BHK this morning – between dropping me off at work and dropping Danny at the airport, she was in a minor collision with road debris that flew off of another vehicle – about the size of a hammer, it spun up and under the Love Cube. I’m just glad it didn’t strike her or the windshield.

I’ve come to realise that we have way too many pirate ships all over the place.. They need to be consolidated, sorted and put into some sort of storage system so we can create fleets off the cuff comfortably and with a minimum of space thievery.

Re-inking Thor pool in Flickr. Pretty nifty concept.

I’m thinking of trying Risus with BHK, to introduce her to RPG gaming. We didn’t get to do any RPG stuff while Danny was in town, but maybe next time. BHK and Dan played Hunters and Gatherers, and quite liked it.

Maybe do a mod of LCR , too? With blank dice , maybe.

Not so startling revelation – I have absolutely zero skill at playing SSX in any format – no matter what console, or sequel, I just don’t have the chops for it. Puzzle games and first person shooters, I can at least hold my own. BHK totally dominates.

Rainy, lazy day today.

Watched Pirates 2 in anticipation of the third film. Also enjoyed Spies Like us.

I want more Hawaiian shirts! BHK has me hooked on thrift store Hawaiian shirts. (properly cleaned, of course)
