7304 – What rhymes with Saturday?

Oona did well, understandably nervous. I think she’ll be fine once she unclenches just a bit.

The weather yesterday was beautiful! A shame I had to stay so close to HQ, but today will be better, once the afternoon rolls around.

D’s birthday is in a week. See what happens when you don’t clear out your memos? I notice she hasn’t added anything to her wish list since 2003.

More Walker Texas Ranger Clips not the best, but it’s nice to have a complete set. Nothing beats getting punched out in a bear trap, though.

Eight CDs to bring to the club today. I hope and trust that Mzk and Belle will enjoy ’em. Interesting that Jul didn’t ask for any… I’ll see where her tastes lie today, if she’s there.

7303 – ORBITAL MIND CONTROL LASERS !!

http://www.cell.com/content/article/fulltext?uid=PIIS0092867405001157

In a story in the current issue of Cell, scientists report that they can control fruit-flies remotely — by shooting lasers at their neurons. Cool enough, but then they tore the heads off a few flies, and found they were still able to stimulate the remaining neurons — and even induce them to fly. That’s right: Remote-controlled headless zombie flies. Do not miss the video of the headless flies in action, which looks like a freaky outtake from The Ring.

7301 – Friddy-frid.

Didn’t make it to the Tiki party last night, but next week is a distinct possibility. I’m in tonight, too – EN has a guest over so I’m taking call, and breaking in Oona at the same time.

It was very difficult leaving the bed this morning. Ol’ Newtie was especially snugglesome, and the hen house doesn’t seem so appealing as hiding under the covers.

Preemptive for Mother’s Day – Mr. T Singing “Mother – Treat her right” in shorts that really should be longer.

speaking of videos – 622 music videos. Beastie boys is a guilty pleasure. Body Movin’ and Intergalactic? Please. I’m going to be saying “Another Dimension” over and over again all morning, now.

Also… that freaky America video Sammy showed me earlier.. has been remixed into something else. [edit – ack, has it been /.’ed?]

Hey, I might get to take Danny with me on Saturday to the club. 2 more cards towards the goal.

I’m for everyone of us… Stand for everyone of us, I save with a mighty hand, Every man, every woman Every child…. I’m a mighty Flash…

Moment of Neurobiology – Lobster vs. Sea Hare

Moment of Lyric:

And it’s one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die

7299 – WHAT IS THE FIGA?

Symbol of the age-old myths of Africa, this clenched-fist good-luck charm came to Brazil with its XVII century slave trade. As tribal memories paled over generations, belief in its powers to increase warriors’ fertility also faded, but until nowadays it is prized by both men and women purely for luck. Ranging from delicate earrings to meter-tall sculptures, Brazil’s attractive figa may be carved from wood or stone, crafted from plain or precious metals, and even set with gems. Tradition holds that, in order to bring luck, a figa must always be a gift.

7297 – Thoisdee

Mix of good and bad yesterday at work. Another great success, but we lost one to water. I can’t imagine what it must be like for a parent to lose a 4-year-old. Tech issues almost caused me to miss the poorhouse, but fortunately MM took care of things, and I got to spend a few hours gabbing with mzkitten. It was nice to hang out, gab with a nicey and suck up some local color… man, much of the crowd seemed almost too young to be able to drink. Hopefully, next time, more of the crew will make it out. darwinsjezebel and her mate visited briefly too, but had to fly early to do some promotion for the club in Miami.

Added bonus, Free promotional t-shirts and smokeless tobacco. I’ll give the skoal to bro when I see him next.

Kev saw Tomi! Fifteen years since I’ve seen him, he’s now 35 years old, and he’s had a stroke, but apparently is a fun guy, still into movies and pizza like no other. FMM is raiding Wally’s place for stolen goods.

Moment of Lyric:

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin’.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’.

Tonight is the first Tiki Torch Night at the Mai Kai! I’m seriously considering heading over there after work.

7296 – Ack.

ADP installed some sort of viscious software on her computer, and it finally launched an ugly payload all over her system. Anti-spyware sort of caught it, but her proxies and assorted networking went kerflooey for a little while.

I get to give the “don’t install any software on your system, however harmless it may seem (in this case, web accellerators and screen savers), because there are mean people on the internet that want to break toys that don’t belong to them.

So, thanks to that, I get to little late to catch up running postal sorts for the magazine. I’m taking call for a little while for EN tonight, but I should still hav eplenty of time to get home, shower, and go out ot the poorhouse at 10ish.

In up News, Kari and Oona both came in today, and will be acting as tech reservists. First trial by fire will be Oona this Friday (I’ll stay home, on call, just in case she hits any bumps.) Second will be Next Thurday and Kari. I’ve got ot come up with a good shedule for the crew… I really prefer to still give EN and MA the lion’s share of hours, because they’re both awesome techs, and could really use the money.

7294 – Humpty-dumpty, fiddle-dee-dee.

Got a call from a corporate headhunter yesterday. Interesting and enlightening. We’ll see what that has to offer.

The third episode of Dr. Who was nice, too. Not a bad trilogy thus far. Origin/intro, then a far future, then a nice gaslight zombie tale. Added bonus, use of the word Phantasmagoria, Charles Dickens, and Chloroforming people. (Not to mention the foreshadowing of “Bad Wolf”, and episode 4)

I never got around to calling anyone “Little Cowpoke” the other day.

Moment of Lyric: (TMBG – Hovering Sombrero)

Time is flying like an arrow
And the clock hands go so fast they make the wind blow
And it makes the pages of the calender go flying out the window one by one
‘Til a hundred years are on the front lawn
And the old familiar things are mostly all gone
But the old sombrero just keep hovering on
Hovering sombrero hover on

It’s going to be a busy day at work today… I may come home and take a little nap before heading out to the poorhouse. I’m looking forward to seeing so many local folks. Looks like the mob is going to be medium-large. Some folks can’t make it, but sounds like most will.

I have to call Kev, Dave, and do refreshers with Dan, Bro, and the Momster. Reconnect with Rachel and Graypumpkin.

I want to say something about Andrea Dworkin’s death, but

I may’ve drummed up a bit of side business via Belle & Jen. (Belle is delightfully pneumatic, in huxleyan terms, of course. Quite far from an Epsilon)

  • Nelly

Also, bring the Cramps for Mzk.

7293 – Robot guards!

Japanese robotics company Tmsuk has announced its latest creation, the T63 Artemis Guard Robot. Artemis will autonomously patrol a multi-story building and report back wirelessly to security HQ if it finds anything amiss. Though not yet capable of apprehending any intruders, it is armed with several non-lethal offensive weapons such as a fluorescent paintball gun and the capability to spray a cloud of mist to temporarily blind the intruder.

Artemis – the robot guard

It reminds me a bit of what if Johnny 5 and Rosie had a baby.

7292 – Truncated, due to upgrades

Argh, downloaded the new semagic client, and a lost my notes for this entry.

I really should know better by now.

Let’s see. What was I saying? abbreviated for the time impaired. I’m glad I uploaded pics and stuff earlier.

Video shoot went well, although I was wrong… there were no handicapped folk. There was an old couple, but otherwise my guess was pretty accurate.

Work-front – Training 5 new out-of-staters, and WB is back in town, too.

RI called me mouthy yesterday for standing up for myself, and if she gets uppity with me today, I’ll give her some education on what mouthy really is. She might also get a refresher on caustic sarcasm and spinning pineapples where the sun don’t shine.

Sleepy Kitties!

Moment of Lyric: (mp3)

When you were young
You were the king of carrot flowers
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
In holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet

7290 – Mon-day Fun-day

TV shoot this morning. Should be interesting to see what sort of motley collection of transit-types they got to be there.

My guesses are that there will be one wheelchair, a black woman, and a Hispanic of whatever gender the person in the wheelchair *isn’t*. Unlikely to be represented, though there are plenty that ride the bus are Asian students and people on oxygen. I also suspect that they *won’t* have a representative methadone clinic-goer, a drunk, or a crazy derelict.

Am I being cynical? I don’t think so.

Streaming Beluga-cam! Thanks, Jennylee!

Yesterday continued my study in regional anthropology. I got to observe regional cultures effects when brought together quite a bit this weekend. Brazil, Spain, California, New York, Florida and more were all represented, doing displays of plumage and mating dances to an assortment of native music, with strategy and tactics going on in the background. Basically, I stopped off at the club to drop off a rockabilly mix CD, and ended up staying for some hours, because walkabout struck me as a big boring in comparison to sit-about. Got to gab with mzkitten, Steve, and new barkeep – Marissa. Marissa is absolutely gorgeous, has an excellent demeanor, and has never tasted Brie cheese before. I drank about 9 diet cokes. I saw Ivan, one of my old cab drivers back from when I was living in Pompano. He didn’t recognize me, and I didn’t chat him, as he was more interested in getting to a poker game.

I’ve got to get Danny to go with me sometime… I think it’s a far better watering-hole than our current place. I’m also looking quite forward to going out on Wednesday with her and the gals! uberbastard should get his butt down for the fun! C’mon, Uber!!

Before I even arrived at the community nexus, I got a sidebar of people-watching/interaction by calling a paramedic for a homeless man who was unable to walk, due to an extremely painful weeping infection on his right leg. I saw him at about noon-1ish, and he said that he had been stuck there by the bus stop since before sunrise. Who knows how long he would’ve sat there… he said that he saw a bunch of buses go by, but none stopped, and nobody could hear him calling out to them.

Sesame Street’s Letter of the Day. Features Cookie Monster scarfing cookies, as is appropriate, no matter wht the politically correct, non-fat version of PBS says.

I dreamt that I lived in a tree in the jungle, and that Newt slept on my head like a coonskin cap. There were monkeys on branches near ours, but none wore cats as hats. They did have sugarcane to chew on, though. I think that was because I was talking to blackhellkat about molasses earlier. speaking of bhk.. check out her lovely kitty, Pyewacket.

I’ve been hearing a lot about the Illuminati, lately. Do I think that there is one small cabal of powerful men that control everything? Nah. I do think that there are a number of small cabals of powerful men that control a lot, though. Are they being played by a greater power? I doubt it, but even if they are, if you filter it down to the common man, it doesn’t really make a difference.

One world government? I doubt it’ll ever happen.

Talking about the Illuminati isn’t dangerous. Heck, they’re the major bad guys on the Gargoyles Cartoon, and the Freemasons are and old boy’s club that does good works for burn victims.

Something funny.. when I was talking to Mzk about the Illuminati, the amount on the next drink bill was $23.

Make of that coincidence what you will. (click for info on 23 and secret societies) Synchronicity is catching.

I do really like the card game Illuminati (the regular version, not the trading card version), almost as much as I dig Fluxx.

I have the urge to call people “Little Cowpoke” today. I don’t know where that came from.

Astronaut Jones: The Creature From Porpula

Moment of Lyric:

Rocket
I’m taking a rocket.
I’m packing my suitcase
Hey, look out, Moon!

Yeah, a rocket
into outer space.
Goodbye, human race
I’ll be there soon.

Blast off!
For fun and adventure.
There’s a fair adventure

Yeah, it’s my way
