Eek… that means Christmas & New Year’s is on the way… so fast!

Someone was shooting off bright bottle rockets and other fireworks at the riverfront last night. That was a nice surprise.

I think Mercedes Lackey’s writing is pretty weak, but I’m enjoying this piece she wrote called “The Last Straw”, where she rails against some of the more lunatic fringers in science fiction fandom. Monday after such a lovely long weekend. I hope to the powers of creation that the Monday meeting is blessedly brief. Rhode Island returns from vacation and will discover LH’s departure… I hope she doesn’t wig out too much.

Maybe there’ll be TeeGee pie. I have no pie here. That would get me to drink coffee.

Coffee and pie. Breakfast of champeens. It makes kids jump like little green frogs! I’m feeling extra hoppy just thinking about it! I also have a strong craving for scrambled eggs with salsa this morning.

Went to the mall with Mel to get lunch and shop for Christmas prezzies for folks (where the mother surprised us in burdines), then worked on her ‘pooter to get Fruity-loops working with the midi device properly. We hung out for a bit, had a few Smirnoff ices, and hung out and chitty-chatted about this, that and the other thing for a few hours. We stopped off at a pet store, and scoped out a Siamese, even though there’s already 4 back at Mel’s place. I was tempted to bring Newt back a little buddy m’self, but brain won out over heart… this time.

Things about my dad at 35, as far as I can recall. The year was 1980. Two sons, aged eleven and seven. His wife was a visiting day-nurse to an older lady that had a stroke. He was just getting into real estate sales to do in the background while he worked as an engineer. Fished almost every other weekend, and hunted maybe once every two months. Most of our meat was store bought, but fish was a regular staple brought in by boat, pole and hook. Fishing was really his best way to get away from it all, and he almost always had a beer in his hand if it was after 7pm. He and his family were living in one side of a duplex that was a two-bedroom, two bath home in Florida, and rented out the one-bedroom side to an older tenant. He smoked cigarettes during the week, and packed a pipe with cherry tobacco on the weekends. The neighbors were hippie/bikers named Denny and Chris, and his big TV shows were still documentaries, about war or nature. He wore his hair short, clean shaved.

He had seven years left to live. I think he was very blessed.

Things about me at 35. The Year is 2004. Newt is five years old, and far simpler to maintain than a human child. Currently seeing what the future will bring mate-wise. My brother no longer lives right next door, but I’m in a comfortable place, and am looking off and on for a two-bedroom condo. I do not smoke anything, and drink only sparingly. My neighbors are a doctor’s office and a Psychiatrist’s… the two apartments adjacent are empty, but may be populated come Dec 1. My Big TV shows are lost, and nature documentaries.. I’ve become disillusioned with most of the history channel’s offerings lately. My hair is long, almost to my belt line. I have a full beard, but am considering a reversion back to my more regular goatee.

I have no idea how much time I have left. I’m very blessed.

The new Make Love Not Spam screensaver by Lycos constantly loads web pages advertised in spam mails; this is to make sure the spammers will find they’re having impossible traffic costs.

I’ve recently registered with blogexplosion, and I expect to see a considerable amount of traffic flowing into the site. I wonder how much this service will end up hammering LJ, as more people use it to get people to swing by? Since you can route to more than one site, maybe I’ll point some hits to my friend’s page.

Even better, it’s helped me to find some pretty nifty blogs I’d not otherwise have tripped over. (Random on LJ works only if you’re looking for 18 year old girls posting about cutting and high school issues, generally.)

Sweet mother of pearl … the IVR system was limping badly last night.. my poor tech had to suffer through a lot (as did I, through extension) between getting folks to reboot remote servers and just act on the issue that’s causing it to cry. Yesterday, from 7pm on to well after 9pm, The system needed nursing in a way that I couldn’t fix… the autodialer system wasn’t recognizing inserted jobs.

Poor EN was stuck at the source, trying to get calls launched over expanded areas quickly, and fortunately, we were able to do so in a reasonably timely manner, though it required a lot of hoop jumping. It’s to his credit that he was able to maintain a calm and cool head. If it was ADP, I’d have been dealing with a wailing banshee.It’s just as well that Aly wasn’t available during those hours… not much time for quality hangout while I’m giving code and tech lines to EN to call. (and calling alternate lines m’self)

Of course, it turns out that EN was mis-entering his login code, and the IVR was cool. Well, he realized it, and was up front about the error, which is to his credit. I know he won’t be making that boo boo again anytime soon!

Even though I work for a company that has random drug testing as a requirement, I don’t think we’ve ever actually had a test. The last time I was made to pee in a cup was 3/11/2003, and that was just for a filler crap gig at TAG. (I think Katt worked there for a while, as well as Fred.)

As I tear the fabric of time and space, and am reminded of the muffin tree.

Random Scotto Thanksgiving factoid:

I left home over Thanksgiving weekend when I was 17. The Mother was on vacation at the time, and the bro was living with an aunt and uncle. I went to live with a friend of mine at the time, Laura, a single mom with twin 5-year old girls from one marriage, and a 1 year old from another relationship. I got room an dboard for babysitting, which was a pretty sweet deal. Laura was in her LDS phase, and I wasn’t interested in her as a mate, which was also just as well… the last thing I’d have needed was to fall into some sort of weird father/husbandhood at that point.

Laura is now on Husband #4 (I think?), Pam’s old flame Patrick. GP and Katt knew him too… I think they were burned by him in some way, but I don’t know that whole story. The Twinkies are as old now as I was then… maybe older?

I’ve only started to mention this once before, years ago, and never got back to it.

That was a really screwed up time for me… Parents split up and both were not being too mature about things, Bro was dealing with everything badly, currently on the outs with Pam for the first time (we buried the hatchet at laura’s 3rd wedding… that lasted for a while, until the IBM/Texas incident), I wasn’t spending much time with Brent or Steve, more of Kev and Tomi. The place I was living was fairly low-rent, and I remember having to be an “Enforcer” to get one of Laura’s ex-boyfriends to give back her Mac. He was so frightened of the situation, that he put the computer at the end of the street, and stood aside about a block away. I didn’t help matters by being a pissed-looking Mongo-monkey with an aluminum baseball bat in hand… after he’d given me some lip on the phone, I was fairly enthusiastic about connecting the metal to his body in some way, too.

That was a long time ago. half my life ago, really… 18 years, I guess?

Thanksgiving has a lot of memories attached to it… right around or on my Dad’s birthday (depending on the year’s Thursday), so I tend to think about him and his passing away at this time of year, more than others.

Tomorrow’d have been my Dad’s 59th Birthday… he’s been gone 16 years now.It doesn’t seem that long.

Things I’m thankful for:
