7703 – Saturday Morning

Due to Eric’s Comcast internet service sucking yet again, I had to take call last night, and again this morning. So, no movie with Dan though we did have sushi and hang out at my apartment of a few hours. I may get a reprieve today… we’ll see.

We spent most of our time talking about fluff. Lost, Discworld, etc. A little about current events, too, of course. The topic of martial law came up, and I was surprised that we basically agreed that it was a slippery slope.

Working with missing children is especially hard at this time, but we’re doing everything we can. The situation is really too large for any and all agencies in existence to handle… National Center / Clearinghouses are processing quite a lot of information and I fear weakened accuracy and utility due to burnout, overburdens and fatigue.

Even though most of what we handle is telephony and the phones are out in the worst areas, the outlying regions as far as Texas, Georgia and Florida have significant bleed over.

7701 -PSA – contact your representatives.

In response to the disintegrating scene in New Orleans, Kevin points out that email, faxes, and phone calls are needed — not just money.

All it takes is for you, and others you can reach by email or journal, to contact your two senators and congressperson and demand immediate action as begged for by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. When Mayor Nagin was asked how we can help, he said contact your Senators and Congressperson now. Here is a site you can just click on your state or put in your zip code to reach a link for a form email to go to your Senators and Congressperson. If you do not have time to do an email, feel free to use the one I give you below.

Please take 5 minutes:

  • Email your Senators and your Congressperson(s)
  • What to say? Use your own words or cut and paste this: New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin needs the federal government’s help today. He has told me through the media that people are dying by the hundreds, his police are being overrun and that he needs troops & lots of them, he needs buses (500 or more), he needs health care support and he needs water and food. Things in New Orleans are worse today than yesterday. The President is traveling to the gulf today and ending his day in New Orleans. Please contact him and tell him he, with your support, needs to act today to help Mayor Nagin and the people of New Orleans.

7699 – Holiday Countdown

Right on, I got my ducats for July’s links today. Just as quickly, off they go to the Red Cross and the Critter fund.

Only 5 more Months to my birthday! Only 4 Months until Christmas/ New Years! only 3 Months to Thanksgiving! Only 2 Months to Halloween! Only One Month until Newtie’s B’Day! Long Weekend this Weekend! Yay!

Moment of Holiday spazdom, over. For Now.

7695 – August Behind, September Ahead.

So long, August! Hopefully September promises good things in the coming weeks ahead.

I was given revised paid links last night… maybe the mystery of the phantom July payment will be solved.

I know for sure which entry of mine has the longest ongoing comment conversation at least across time, if not in sheer numbers. An entry posted back in July of 2002 about Roanoke and the Lumbee Indians (Long before those two wiki articles) still has people dropping in now and again, more than three years later, including a couple die-hard regulars. I come up as entry #30 on a google search regarding the tribe, and I’m not sure that any of the sites before mine have an area to post personal commentary. The biggest discussion seems to be whether or not there is African American blood in the tribe as a result of escaped slaves assimilated into the group. There doesn’t seem to be a clear answer, and neither side of the discussion seems to be showing signs of backing down.

That said, there are only 50 comments in that entry as of this writing… I have two or three entries that have sparked off into long comment trails of 500+, but those discussions peter out about a week or two after being posted. That’s a case of seven people just talking back and forth… it turned into sort of a chat room, rather than a discussion forum near the end.

Angela seems nice, despite the fact that I’ve never talked to her.
Books I’ve seen her reading – Great Gatsby and A few Tony Hillermans.

Sandman the next Villain in the spidey movies? (researched due to this entry)

I’d still like to see Mysterio in a gimmicky 3-d movie for spidey’s third release.

Watched Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter. Worked for me, but might not for most. I suspect that GrayP would find it entertaining, but I doubt eryx_uk or Danny could get into it.

I chased it with Gojira tai HedorĂ¢… I hadn’t seen it for a good 10 years, and I was overdue. I forgot all about the fish-headed folks and weirdo cartoons that are in this one. Mmm… Smog-monster-liscious. and Godzilla Flying under his own power. (2 meg mpg file) (thanks to badmovies.org)

Moment of Lyric: “Save the Earth” (from “Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster“)

Animals, God’s animals
Don’t go away, don’t go
Flowers, my flowers
Don’t go away, don’t go
The sea has cobalt, it’s full of mercury
Too many fumes in our oxygen
All the smog now is choking you and me
Good Lord, where is it gonna end?
Got to get it back, someday
Got to get it back, and soon now
For tomorrow maybe you and me
We’re movin’, we’re movin’, movin’ to the Moon now
It’s up to us to make a choice
We know what it’s worth to save the Earth
Come raise your voice
Save the Earth! (save the Earth)

7652 – nifty. very much a scotto-thing.

What is this?
It’s a map of 33,000 English nouns. Each tiny rectangle corresponds to a noun. The color of the rectangle has been assigned a color, based on an internet image search for that noun. The words are clustered so that similar words are near each other. You can move your mouse around the map to see what word a rectangle represents. You can also click and zoom in, to see individual clusters. The gallery page has many examples.

Can I pick a color and see what word it corresponds to?
Yes. Click on the “color” button. That will arrange the words by hue and brightness, forming a kind of color chooser. Move the mouse over the rectangles to see what words they correspond to.

Can I type a word and see what color it is?
Yes. Type the word into the “all starting with” text box. As you type, the map will narrow down to show all the words starting with the letters you’ve typed.

How exactly did you assign colors?
For each word, we performed a Yahoo image search and retrieved 50 image results. (If fewer than 50 images were found, we deemed the word too obscure and discarded it.) Then for each image we averaged the values of the pixels in the middle and then averaged those 50 results. We brightened the colors slightly for display.

Check it out!

Also note that Sandman suffers from Harry Osborne Hair and Electro’s Fashion sense. poor guy.

I always thought Sandman was more spiffy as a sort of Neutral guy, not really a hero or a villain.

I imagine Spidey probably was looking for Hydroman to use as a bidet after that.

Lisa^2 are in New Orleans, and gave me a ring a ding ding from party central. They offered to pick up some stuff for me at the local hoodoo stops, but I’m set for my chicken feet and tomb dust for the time being.

It sounds like they’re having a grand time, and I wish I could be along for the ride.

I don’t think I’ll see a long-term Moonbase / Manned Mars mission in my lifetime, and that’s ok with me.

Hm, no payment on my ad-links for the last month… I suppose I’ll take ’em down if I don’t see anything by the first week of September.

Heard from Magda last night and it was quite nice… but all too brief. She’s going to Costa Rica for a week or two, and then back to Colombia, and then back to Fort Lauderdale.

A pretty funny trailer for a hillbilly Kung-Fu zombie movie which does not yet exist, presumably only because Billy Bob Thorton has yet to get wind of it.

Abednego

Meaning: servant of Nego = Nebo.

This was the Chaldee name given to Azariah, one of Daniel’s three companions (Dan. 2:49). With Shadrach and Meshach, he was delivered from the burning fiery furnace (3:12-30).

Looked it up, after hearing a man name his dog that. Pretty nifty name.
