9067 – monday

From the office this morning – I thought I heard a bird hit the window…I’m on the 11th story, not used to outdoor noises, let alone a loud *SPACK* against the glass behind me. As always, clicks embiggen.

Not a bird.. the window washer guy rappelling down at great speed.

I thought he was falling for a moment, but he was quite safe.

Another -rama… last week’s Ham-a-rama is supplanted by Ring-o-rama!

It’s better because it’s on a balloon.

In response to yesterday’s entry about BHK’s ring, some superstitions about lucky / not so lucky stone types.

Today was a nice one… we raked some leaves, the in-laws came over to do a little yard work with us… Pye came out with me on the leash for a little bit.

Not much to report, aside from the gutters are cleaner, now… and the leak isn’t really a leak, but an impact from something, probably around halloween on the side of the house.

Last of the hot peppers harvested for the year – next garden is going to be even better than our first, I bet! What I thought was going to be a “vanity garden” certainly bore a huge bounty.

Once it got dark, we hit Mama Lucias for supper… veggie pizza for Chris and Me, while Larry and BHK enjoyed pepperoni.

We returned, played a little Rayman, and then hit the sack after watching our
yardwork, dinner at mamma lucias, rayman, caught up office and old eps of news radio.

flash shot… you can see the green algae a lot more clearly. I wonder how long they were in there… did the bike fall off of a boat?

sans flash – I like the natural light better, but there’s less detail.

9064 – sat

In a nutshell –

Slept in a little, but we made it for my allergy shots by 10am.

After the obligatory injections, a quit stop at starbucks for a lackluster peppermint latte – we won’t go back there again. The Giant across the street has a starbucks inside, and if I’m going to pay $5 for a coffee, I’ll get one that’s excellent – not that poorly assembled mess I had for breakfast. The sugar cookie was ok… I think the fac tthat it was shaped like a penguin added flavor.

Headed out to Maerten’s – went to look at BHK’s ring lemon quartz in white gold… sort of our own lime-vanilla ice. The staff there was very kind and helpful; Jamie in particular had more than a few good ideas about setting the stone and we’ll be meeting for sketches soon. I’m glad we could find a place that we like and trust so much to do what we want.

went to Aardvark – picked up a few fun little items to fool with in the days and years ahead.

Easter Island (I love the game pieces ) Reminds me more than a little of Laser Battle, but with added nifty bits here and there.

This game speculates that the easter island statues were, in fact, beam weapons created by two very powerful wizards. These wizards used the statues in a giant game, with the island itself as the board. You are now one of those wizards…

Easter Island lets you place your statues and move them into position. Then, when everything is ready, call upon the power of the Sun to topple your opponent’s statues and thus your opponent.

If fishes were wishes – again, the game pieces are cute.

“Players are fishermen, trying to catch the most valuable fish and sell them in the market for the best prices. With limited space for storing caught fish, players must use their wits to get the right fish to market at the right times. This is where the granting of wishes is most helpful. Just catch the fish who will grant the wish you want, throw it back, and you get your wish. Sounds simple, but the game does require a bit of thinking and planning. The wishes can help you increase the value of fish when sold, grant you extra storage space, and several other useful things.”

Spree – Shopping, gunfire and violence. How could I resist a Cheapass Game we didn’t already have?

“Springtime. Midnight. The Mall is beckoning.

Welcome to LeGrand Mall, the oldest and most poorly secured indoor mall in the world. It’s as airtight as the Titanic and as solid as a wet paper bag. This place just begs to be robbed.

Enter you, and your infantile collection of friends. It’s not enough to simply loot this mall. No, you have to do it with a certain amount of flair. Which boils down to an all-night looting race, with shopping carts, flashlights, and guns.

The object? Park your car, dash into the mall, and load your shopping cart with the goodies on your list. You can snitch stuff out of the stores if you like, but it’s even more fun (and easier) to steal it from your friends. And that would explain why you’re carrying a huge gun.”

– includes a variant of “a bunch of extra violence we’ve never tested”, such Running People Over.

In addition to our normal game purchases… BHK convinced me (with very little arm-twisting) to pick up some comics – all miniseries at the moment.

Current story lines about –

Started getting hungry and went on a quest for a Pizza Hut… Stuffed Crust pie, in particular. When all we could locate were take-out places, we chanced upon the Do Dah Deli. Good find. BHK had a foot-long corn dog and shared pinwheel fries with me – I had a build your own sammich…. I just went with an assortment of cheeses, sprouts and veggies with honey mustard. It was all quite tasty, though there was a mix-up with our order. Easily fixed, and no worries.

Side Track Hobbies – I think we’ve found a place to fill Larry (and my own) Model train needs. The place looks tiny from the outside, but once you’re in there, it’s warehouse-level storage of all sorts of stuff, from z-scale on up to big ol’ yard stuff. The Marklin Selection was really quite nice. I wish I’d had access to this kind of loot when I was tabletop gaming… I bet Danny’d have a field day with dioramas.

Lastly, we hit the Children’s Bookstore next door. We got more than a little bit of Christmas Shopping done there.. not all for kids, either. Bugah and Em were the highlights, however. Once the lady running the place found out that I did computer stuff and having a little discussion of her fondness of Mac over PC (I feel it’s a religious discussion… only seldom to people get converted one way or the other) – I showed her how to upgrade both her MacBook and PC workstation’s software. She was an older lady, maybe in her early 80’s, but was very vital and possessed of strong opinoins and beliefs.

Comments of note from her included commentary on Univeristy of Maryland / Virginia Tech teachers from the 1950s, fairy dolls, and her firm beliefs about Macs vs PCs. However her most memorable comment to me was – “Pomonkey indians are in a terrible state, especially since they started intermarrying with colored folks”.

(In early Colonial days, Pomonkey was known as “Pomonkey Indian Land,” for it was heavily populated by “Pomonceaks” as John Smith called them on his map of 1608. Pomonkey is a plateau of land surrounded by the Great Mattawoman Swamp. The Indians had followed many trails from every point in Southern Maryland for the rich hunting and fishing in Pomonkey. These converging trails became roads for the European settlers. Hence, Pomonkey very early became a site of local commerce.)

A slight Soda-spill later, and we headed on home, with a brief stopover at the in-laws. We caught up with My name is earl, and then hit the sack.

Not a bad day, all in all.

Supper at La Tolteca tonight… not so great. Flavorless beans, lackluster chips and salsa… enchiladas were blah. The Potato & Onion Burrito was pretty good, as were the spinach-veggie thingies, but it was a no go. The decor of Meso-American Indians performing sacrifices had far more flavor than the food.

Two homeless guys from the other day – The PG station on the green line is a pretty sad place. these two had enough resources to stagger on and shamble to a seat…. both were massively out of it, due to disabilities either ingrained or added with outside substances. Possibly both. The next sop, a policeman came aboard and lurked next to them for the bulk of the trip… as soon as he left, they began slap-fist fighting. Nothing serious, but I’m glad I got off at the following stop… it’s just sort of depressing to see folks like that.

HAM-A-RAMA!
Ham-A-Rama! – First sighting of Hickory Farms product…. and it’s called HAM-A-RAMA… contains “cheese food” called Chub, “Beef Stick”, and those little strawberry candies in addition to the aforementioned Ham (with water added).

1028071413.jpg
Flyball – When we went to visit with Amy, I snagged a quick snap of the pooches running… there are some pretty speedy critters that like to play fetch! It was good to see her and her family, however briefly.

I hate it when Ty is right about stuff like this. I’m pretty sure I’d throw in with robot overlords, too. (Also, Zod in 2008 might work.)From his entry

We’re already giving up our freedoms — our right to privacy, gone. Warrant-less arrest, gone. Right to have your vote counted is super-gone depending on the state you live in, right to stand trial, gone — we have torture. We already have all the downsides of a supposed robotic takeover, but we’re being cheated of the upside! I say, if this is the world we’re gonna live in anyway, at least let the robot overlords have their shot. World peace, technological utopia — and no crime! The robot overlords’ crime control is swift and merciless.

The fog this morning was insane. View from my office looked like the windows were frosted.

BHK’s falafel tonight hit just the right spot!

Test of blog2blog worked well… I copied all of the public entries over to my alternate wordpress site, in case of lj collapse. (Not like that’s going to happen, but it’s nice to have an archive.) I’ll still continue to post here, but I think I’ll do periodic slides over to the other location, to keep the backups fresh.

It took a long time to move 9000+ articles over, but not as long as I’d thought. Downside is that it doesn’t take comments or tags with it, but the internal search engine at WP is pretty darn solid. Added bonus, the comment and page tracking is a lot more up to snuff. Note – Save your entries on a file locally… makes it a lot easier to catch up if something happens mid-process. Voice posts, lj-embeds and lj-polls also don’t travel well, for obvious reasons.

The Ghost of Foghorn Leghorn Speaks of Unrequited Love

I said, listen to me, boy. Only the stars know.
And now you, fidgeting in all the air
like you fear for your neck. Still,
you’re young and youth explains away all,
except love. My love. I’ve a gift
but not for this. It speaks like a house fire.

Or a bullet into a bowl of oatmeal. If fired,
you’ve got a mess. And I do, I know,
and not one I thought I wanted, like a gift.
Stay with me, son. I’m not wasting air
for your benefit alone. I said, that’s all,
and walked off, shaking. It’s hard to be still.

It’s hard to know how to be still.
When I was little I felt I’d catch fire
if I was too quiet. Nothing’s changed at all.
There’s nothing worse than to know
my smoke signals go unheeded in the air—
she won’t look, speak, accept the gift

I made for her. Her going is my gift.
All that I’ll keep. Out to an old still
I’d go and drink until I forget it’s air
I need to live, air that fills me now like fire
nothing can douse. For all I know,
the ground beneath me is burned beyond all

knowing. Any of this getting through all
that thick head, boy? Love isn’t a gift.
Way off, you’re way off. I know
you hope it’s feathers flying and time stood still,
crowing from the roof, and gun-fire
meant to silence your song on the night air.

You’re not listening. That’s just hot air.
It’s torture. You’re finished, once and for all.
You might as well be old rags in a fire.
I’ll say it again: love wasn’t a gift
when I fell flat and hard upon it, and still,
I won’t dare let it go. It’s all I know—

like the air or the sound of my voice, my gift,
all bluster and not a bit of it still.
This fire could burn me alive. Who’d know?

Solid sleep, but I woke up once in the middle of the night – maybe that’s why I can recall my dream so readily today. Dreamt that I was living in a haunted house – hanged bodies in varying states of decay kept appearing on the porch. Some of the skulls were certainly not human… more bovine or ursine, depending. I would throw them away, or burn them out in the yard, but the following day, more would be there.

I kept the noose rope, spooling it into a large ball in the back yard, hoping to make the place a roadside attraction. I don’t know why reappearing bodies wouldn’t be enough. For whatever dream-reason, I spun the rope to the tune of Stick Shifts & Safety Belts (Which is still lodged in my head… 16 hours or more later.)

Rather than come for the huge ball of twine, visitors did start to come, due to the delicious smell of charred carcasses. I don’t know why feeding the bodies to visiting people felt OK, but it was guilt-free… my attitude was “hey, they were just hanging there… like selling fruit from my apple tree.”

Top 20 Logical Fallacies – When in a debate, I’m often guilty of abusing reductio ad absurdum (#14).

This morning on the way to work – still a few autumn colors out there.
1113070642.jpg - I love autumn

I hear through the grapevine that one of my old places of business is in a pretty big tangle. Eight people have turned over in a year’s time there. When one considers that they only have 14 positions, five of them part-time and not all 14 existed for that full year, that’s a sure sign of a problem.

Speaking of Grapes… DIET GRAPE AT GIANT HAS RETURNED!!

AT LAST! IT HAS RETURNED!

The only grape soda that I actively enjoy, flavor-wise. Plus, the foam is a soft powder blue, not purple. BHK has been questing for it since mid-june.

Several women on the metro look like ninja / secret agents today. Black turtleneck sweaters and slacks, longish hair pulled back into a bun, small briefcase or carry-bag, and occasionally even a pair of Clark Kent style Spex.

How many La Femme Niktas / Diana Prince / Spy Girls are out there in “secret agent garb”?

Even though I don’t eat it, I am still composed mostly of meat. Apparently Gordon Ramsay feels that vegetarians have no palate. I’d like to see some documentation on that. I’d think that most have a very sensitive palate, save for other flavor blockers like booze and smoking.

Dinner out tonight with in-laws, east cafe. They’re pretty good… sauces are a bit sweeter, but I think that I like the way the tofu is prepared more than Panda’s. After, Larry came by and fixed the commodes – no longer running past the flow line. Day of rest – mostly recovered energy and played Rayman… a lot of really cute minigames in there at just the right skill level. The FPS plunger battles and music beat-keeping stuff are probably my two favorites…. the racing games are probably my most troublesome, but they are beatable.

I desperately needed the recharge. I was very drained and physically sore from lack of sleep and bending poorly.

The Check Mii Out Channel is a lot of fun… I look forward to seeing what updates bring to the party, too. BHK and I have found some really nifty Mii’s – It has been a hoot trying to figure out who some of them were… Chuck Norris was the most tricky so far.

Some Scotto dislikes as opposed to yesterday’s likes. I considered for a bit not posting this, but it’ll be good for me to look back in a year or two and see how I feel about the same stuff. Why is it that I can write more words about complaining, but I like so many more things than I dislike? Perhaps it’s simply easier to dwell on the bad, and just enjoy the good?

Something fun that is ruined by folks who over-analyze or get obsessive-compulsive about them. Gaming. Comic Books. Movie lore. Geocaching. When something stops being fun and becomes a chore… That’s one of the saddest things I know. A hobby that turns into an obsession… or when someone misses the point entirely of having fun because they’re too busy reaching a goal, no matter what the cost… that’s just pathetic. If your D&D character dies – don’t shoot yourself in the head or rend at your garments in angst… it’s just a damn game. It’s one thing to cry at a movie or story, and yet another to go all Misery about it. When a nice walk in the country for a geocache or a friendly game of star fleet battles turns into a Bataan Death March to get the next geocoin or explode an enemy ship… calm down. Stop for a second and just enjoy the scenery. Most of the folks that I’ve seen get OCD (to use the term too loosely, I’m sure) don’t even enjoy themselves at that point… but the biggest sin is that they drag everyone down with them.

Tailgaters. It’s worse when I’m in a car that’s tailgating someone else. It sets off more than a few internal panic responses. as a car ride subset, add Folks that refuse to wear seat belts….especially If I can imagine them becoming a projectile and hurting me or my family. On the rare occasion when I’m driving and being tailgated, I’ll weigh the situation – and either slow to the lowest speed allowed on the road I’m on, or pull over and let the person pass. As for seat belts, I’m a pretty bad nag about checking.

Me talking on the phone. ESPECIALLY A CELL PHONE. Unless it’s someone I *REALLY, REALLY* love or am entertained by, I usually do my very best to use the telephone as little as humanly possible. Everything about it is jarring and uncomfortable to me – from the ringing, my ear getting hot, the conversations are either boring or emergencies, it’s an interruption. I leftover dislike from being the on-call guy at a former job… one where lives were at stake. I am jsut now getting over the scramble for the phone instinct. even then, the call was more often from someone looking to get email rather than recover a kidnapped child.

Being taken for granted, or seeing someone else treated that way. / Treated more like an appliance than a human. I know of more than a few people that treat friends and family members as Taxicabs or Entertainment Systems rather than people. People who call on the phone and then don’t say anything, expecting me to be a jukebox of conversation in their ear, because they’re bored. “Dance, monkey! Dance!”. Doesn’t fly. Folks who don’t take into regard other members of the group when they’re doing something they enjoy…. like watching tv while everyone else is trying to have a conversation in the same room, or making the whole group wait while they do something trivial… “I have to put on my makeup” when they knew four days ago that ten people had to be at a meeting place at a certain time. See also, people with screaming babies in a movie theater. Don’t punish the rest of the audience because your little one is unhappy. It should be common courtesy to take the little person out to the lobby. Same goes for cell-phone users in the theater… take it outside.

Being in a conversation that’s really a monologue. Variation on #3 above. I understand a person’s need to rant, but unless I care about them a whole lot or they’re in some real pain… I don’t want to hear it. I’m willing to be a shoulder to cry on… but a whine fest is something I really don’t want to be a part of… especially when the whiner is a person who performs no other form of communication with me. Additionally, people who seem to be talking to me just to hear words coming out of their mouths get old pretty fast, too.

The Willfully ignorant. Different than the ignorant / unwise / unintelligent… or people with faith. I’m talking about folks unwilling to let any evidence contradict their preconceived notions. See also vincible ignorance, rather than an invincible error. additional

Polluters. (That includes smokers, noisy or otherwise smelly folks in my immediate airspace) Hm, seems to have elements of “being taken for granted” entry up there.

My physical limitations. I have a few health issues that hinder me. Bad Back/leg and allergies being the two biggest ones right now. If I could magically change one thing about myself, you can bet it would be the condition of my spine and those bits attached. There are a few things I can do to make it better, but I’ll probably never have full, proper use of my left leg again, due to nerve damage resulting from a poorly done epidural a few years back.

Guilt Trips – When someone *consciously* says something to try to make you feel bad… usually to emotionally manipulate you into doing something you wouldn’t normally do. When that’s done to me, I tend to see red. Actually, anytime I feel like I’m being blatantly manipulated, I get pretty ticked off.

Nazis. I hate those guys.

Started while I wait for my ride home from the Allergist – In honor of it being the tenth –

Ten Things I really like:

1. Road Trips / Walkabouts. (especially with BHK) – It’s always fun to explore and discover new places… or even new things about a place you’ve visited a hundred times before. Additionally, the journey is often more fun than the destination. Grab a bagel, and out for a new adventure!

2. Almost the opposite of #1 – Lounging around the house, not leaving all day long. Having a headquarters full of love, entertainment, food and climate control is pretty dang appealing.

3. Change of seasons – I love, love, love seeing the Yellow-Green Spring change to Dark Green Summer to all of the Autumn colors… only to have the trees go bare and then start again. Snow is fantastic… I see just enough to want more, but not so much that it’s a peril or a nuisance.

4. Rain / Snow / Fog – Precipitation. Rain generally means that things are cooling off, being fed, getting life. (I suspect that video will be fodder for BHK in her “we should get some ducks” argument.) I’ve long preferred traveling in a mist or fog, especially on a hike. I enjoy a traditional “nice day“, too. Let’s just say I like most weather – anything that doesn’t kill me or make me sweat too much is good in my book.

5. monkeys and robots almost equally… Monkeys have a higher spiffy factor due to the biological aspect, I think. Emotion, awe, chaos are all pretty amazing stuff. That said, streamlined new-style and old school aluminum robots alike are pretty keen, even the unfriendly ones that want to destroy we humans for being a fleshy parasite on the surface of the globe.

6. Learning new things – That was really the other third of gaming that I enjoyed quite a lot – along with the social side, and imagination stretching. I love to learn new bits of things, from reading or a live good teacher, preferably. Wiki / Google is a good start, but I’ve found that developing skills from a more interactive knowledge source speeds things along for me. Example – How to make country-style “cat head” (called so based on size and relative shape, not ingredients) biscuits this weekend from Larry.

7. My new family unit. Duh. BHK, Pye and Newt make every day one with elements of love, affection and care. Extended family is also nice – I dig my in-laws quite a bit. Both are people I can learn and grow with in a very positive way.

8. Playing Games. Boardgames, Role playing games, video games… trifles that promote both social and brain activity are something to embrace. I don’t like solitaire games so much… seems to lack something. Even Video games are better if you’re playing them with a human cooperative or competitor-type next to you, or on-line somewhere. Even in those cases, a LAN party in the same room works better for me… however, the upside of on-line play is you can cut connection any time you like, and play in your jammies… (well, you can do that in person, too – depending.) The social aspect has to be with people I enjoy being around… I can’t get into gaming just for gaming’s sake.

9. Kind people. Folks that go out of their way to be respectful and helpful while not being a doormat. I’ve been really blessed to know and have known a huge number of terrific people… more than I suspect is average. Surrounding yourself with good folks is a fun way to learn about being kind yourself. Hanging out with an assortment of geeks, hippies, gamers and just general fans of being nice has helped me to become a better person, I think.

10. Helping others (see #9, above). I really like to do good works. I’m long overdue to donate some blood… one of the easiest acts of charity I can perform. I feel good when I believe that I’ve done something to make someone’s life better. I try to offer a kind word or make at least a simple gesture whenever I can. I get immediate feedback for it, even if the person isn’t grateful… how they react isn’t as big a deal as is the process involved for me.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average height for an adult female in the United States is 63.8 inches (5 feet, 3.8 inches) and for a man it is 69.2 inches (5 feet, 9.2 inches)

That seems a bit shorter than the average women I see every day, but about right for men.

I wonder if the height difference between women and men contributes very much to gender roles?

What American accent do you have? (Best version so far)

Neutral

You’re not Northern, Southern, or Western, you’re just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don’t really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up.

I’ve been thinking about the polar bear swim on new year’s day already… I suspect strongly that I’ll do it again. I really need to schedule some workout time… I’ve been just flopping onto couch when I get home… stretching and strength-building is a real must. Perhaps a specific time to do so would work for the best…. 8pm, probably. After supper, but well before bedski. Not tonight though – took Chris out with us to Mexico for supper. Churro-yum!

The TV grid — which shows will have episodes until when, because of the writers’ strike.

The networks had estimated that a backlog of finished scripts and completed episodes would keep many series on the air until early 2008. But with numerous show runners refusing to supervise non writing services on their programs — duties that include overseeing casting, editing and directing — production has stopped on several leading series and new episodes of a number of shows will vanish around Thanksgiving. Eat more chocolate and help the environment.

LONDON (Reuters) – Chocoholics can assuage any guilt they may feel after a new process was developed that turns the by-products of making chocolate into a biofuel — meaning you can eat your chocolate and be eco-friendly.

A truck, fuelled by the biofuel, will set out from Poole on the English south coast to Mali in West Africa later this month on a charity mission.

“The chocolate waste used to be used in landfill. But now we can make it travel as biofuel,” said organiser Andy Pag who will be one of the two drivers on the trip.

North western English firm Ecotec has taken waste from the chocolate manufacturing process, turned it into bio-ethanol and mixed it with vegetable oil to produce biodiesel.

Some biofuels have come under fire for either diverting much-needed food crops or leading to massive deforestation as land is cleared to grow crops specially for biofuel production.

“This is to show that you can have environmentally-friendly biofuels and that you don’t have to convert normal diesel engines to use it,” Pag told Reuters.

The BioTruck will depart on November 26 and is expected to take about three weeks to drive the 4,500 miles to Timbuktu where it will off-load a small biofuel production unit with the local MFC charity.

But vehicles using the novel product will not exude the sweet smell of success. “No! I’m afraid the exhaust doesn’t smell of chocolate,” said Pag.

Little Red Riding Hood is skipping down the road when she sees a big bad wolf crouched down behind a log.

“My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Wolf.”

The wolf jumps up and runs away.

Further down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched behind a bush.

“My, what big ears you have, Mr. Wolf.”

Again the wolf jumps up and runs away.

About two miles down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched down behind a rock.

“My, what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf.”

With that the wolf jumps up and screams, “Will you knock it off, I’m trying to poop!”
