Busy day at work – they had me before I even sat down – doing a lot of quick database fixes. a few items got confused, fortunately, we’re all good about keeping proper backups to all triggers, tables and such before doing any fiddling.
This is National Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day. Ah well, I missed it! Maybe next year. Probably not. I wouldn’t mind getting a Plush version of a Water Bear. (also known as Moss Piglets)
Tasty Junk food treat – Kellogg’s Cereal Straws– I’m a bit more partial to the Froot Loops version over Cocoa Crispies, but both were snacky-good. The first think BHK said to me was that “Matt is totally going to review these, and you’re going to have wanted ’em, so I beat him to the punch”…. and they are yummy, even without milk.
The Office was one of the better episodes in a long time… funny, and bittersweet, too. Ugly Betty is just ludicrously goofy as well.

Speaking of simple and Rustic – Watched “The F word” with Gordon Ramsey… it’s out of rotation… just isn’t compelling at all. Kitchen Nightmares UK is the best of his lot so far, I think.

Starting to feel a bit like 
ctober!
Back the regular schedule – at work and chugging nicely – jaw still a bit sore from dentist, plus sore throat from allergies.
Dinner with the in-laws and adam – played a little destroy all humans after tasty chicken-egg noodle type-dish (hot dogs for larry). The canned veggie-chicken was cooked up to be really darn tasty, as was the mushroom gravy. The veggie gravy would be excellent on biscuits with a little black pepper, too, I suspect!
First day of new allergy meds, and my coughing is vastly reduced.
I can’t believe that it’s been 5 years since the beltway sniper. I certainly never thought that I’d live and work in this region back then. Between that, and Flight 77 six years ago – it’s amazing how much people get back to business at hand and swarm all over the pentagon, the metro and so on.

Woke up with a sore throat – I was a little panicked that my infection had come back post-antibiotics. Not a big deal, I only had to visit a zillion doctors today.
Pretty much a 50,000 mile warranty checkup –
I got the following done:
Visited Allergist
– got ‘scrip for a new inhaler, one that should stop the need for the old one. a puff before bed.
– Going back on shots once a week. Saturdays, I suspect, due to me working and all.
– trying a new med for my “stigmata”. rash on wrists and ankles.
– Doctor was pretty amusing. “Any animals at home, aside from your wife?”
– I’ve lost about 16 lbs since the start of September.
– I’m allergic to red meat! good thing I don’t eat the stuff anymore. So much for me being a zombie, werewolf, ghoul or other carni-beasite, though.
– Once on my shots, I should be doing a lot better, especially with Newt and Pye in the house.
Got a Flu Shot
– Didn’t feel a thing. The Nurse at the Allergist is *good*. Note to self – get my next one there, too.
Picked up the mail, and saw TM and Matt hanging out on the boardwalk. They seem to be getting along pretty well, thus far! I’m happy that
Went to Cheeburger Cheeburger, but my throat was too sore to gulp down a veggie burger… (Lunch tomorrow!), but the Milkshake and diet pepsi soothed nicely.
Went to Michaels, to look for fun game-making supplies and Halloween crafts. BHK found a lot of fun items, but my fave was the LED candles… we can finally have some luminaries / candle effects without flame to hurt kitties, or smoke to choke Scotto. I didn’t see anything that I had to have right away.. maybe further into development.
Went to Dentist for a few more fillings. No numbness issues this time, but he was pretty rough. The right side of my jaw is fairly sore, due to him dinging a nerve with the anesthetic needle. I also chewed my tongue a bit, due to my not feeling it. On the upside, the fillings feel great and I’m about done. BHK got her mouth guard, thanks to a cancellation on the bridge at the last minute… saves her from having to come back later this week!
ATW man is still in Oktoberfest mode.
Other things that Happened recently – Went to Target – got a few “game tins” for $1 each. I now own tiny versions of Chess, Snakes and Ladders, and another game that I can’t remember the name of, but looks like Sorry.
BHK makes awesome Lasagna, which is even better the next day.

Went to Game night yesterday at the Clampets – met some nice folks and chitty chatted… didn’t do a lot of gaming.
A pair of CPAs, Clare- a Teacher of chemistry at the Naval academy, a network cable guy (Eric) in addition to Brent (travel agent), Alison (Pampered Chef Home sales), Nick (not sure what he does) A pretty fascinating study in “nice people who don’t share any of my opinions on things”. A pretty conservative, heavily church-going bunch, but very kind and tolerant. I think that Amy would like Nick, and that Kev would really dig Clare, if I was of a match-making bent. The game we played was a “get to know you” sort of thing, where you have cards, and try to figure out what a person say if asked questions like “Where’d you last get groceries” / “How often do you Vacuum a month” / “How many Piercings do you Have” / “Favorite Politician”.
It was a little shocking to me to hear otherwise similar to myself types say that they thought George Bush was their favorite politician, without a shred of sarcasm or irony. I’ll do better to pretend I’m in bizarro-world next time I make my guesses.
Picked up lots of goodies for Bugah and Em for the co-birthday celebration next weekend – Em got Moon Sand, Aqua Dots and a little robot-kitten – Bugah got a Wave-style skateboard, and a 4-up Nerf rocket launcher. I think that they’ll be pleased. Plus, I want to play with the Moon Sand and Nerf Gun. BHK picked up some glow in the dark filler Aqua Dots too, so I imagine she’ll be “helping” Em make some neat designs as well.
Tonight, we did a more game-oriented game night (One long game of Apples to Apples, and a quick game of Aquarius – Chris won both!) with the in-laws and Louise, after Pizza and watching When Harry Met Sally and a Carol Burnett show blooper reel/retrospective. Strange that there was no mention of Lyle Waggoner.

BHK and I had a nice supper of leftover lasagna with an opener of apples, toasted pita and hummus. Good stuff – I ate far too much, but I couldn’t resist!
Caught the new Ugly Betty and Kitchen Nightmares… I have to confess that I enjoy Betty more than the USA’s Kitchen. I tend to think that Kitchen is a bit too scripted, too “pro wrestling” – Ugly Betty is just ridiculous, and I rather dig that – plus the whole Spanish Soap vibe is still pretty strong. If I were to guest star on a show, I could do a lot worse.

Cathy and Dave over tonight for Lasagna, conversation (they’re moving to Colorado once the house is sold) and a couple of games of apples to apples. BHK swept the night by winning both games, despite Cathy’s extending the winning conditions from 8 to 10, and then 12 cards on the 2nd game.
Oddball winner of the night – “Cuddly” – Al Pacino, Quicksand, and Warts. Pacino won over Quicksand by a smidgen.

via lore – Hey, I didn’t know that there was a blog devoted to redesigns of superhero costumes. That’s neat. Some are serious (in a fun sort of way), while others are a little more invested in subverting the superhero paradigm (also in a fun way).

- animal rights – Critters have been a pet project for me for as long as I can remember. Something just feels fundamentally wrong when folks don’t hurting something – why not, if it’s only a “stupid animal”. I’ve been around a number of creatures that are more than just food or clothing, and would prefer that they be neither in a perfect world. I understand that it isn’t a perfect world… but I try to treat critters well.
- exotic cuisine – I like new foods and flavors… it seems like every place has a different idea about what is tasty and what flavors work well together. I’ve developed a special fondness for some of the more commonly available ethnic foods… Thai, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, Ethiopian, German, Italian all bring something spiffy to the table both in traditional and Americanized forms. Nothing that walks on more than one foot, or less than six to eat, though… thanks.
- horror – I enjoy the genre. More in literature than in film lately, though I can get into a scary movie here and there. Some of the best books I know shine a light at odd angles on stuff that lurks in my imagination, making the shadows large and frightening.
- libraries – worked in one the better part of high school and college. great places, lots to see and do – plus there are books out the wazoo. I have many fond memories from the library. It’s where I first gamed, back in 6th grade.
- Pyewacket – he got his name from bell, book and candle (which in turn got it from this Pyewacket) – He’s the baby of our family, 4ish to Newton’s 7ish years old. He’s very laid back, and when you pick him up, you can cradle him like an infant. He’s been a wonderful addition to my family, and I love him dearly.
- roadside attractions – BHK and I stopped at a number of Ripley’s Believe it or Not locations on the side of the road during our honeymoon, and there’s something equally fascinating to me about oddball bits of Americana… Urban Ruin plus Muffler Men = wonder to my mind. Weird water towers, tourist traps and whatnot. The chintz factor bleeds over a little bit into horror for me, too. Best place for a zombie uprising is an old mini golf course. - vikings – Some people favor pirates… I lean to the more Norse cousins… the romanticized version, of course… sailing to new worlds in ships with serpent heads, burying an axe in your oath-breaking cousin, casting runes and thinking about times when the world was a still cooling body of a giant. What’s not to like? The Norse Eddas are some of my favorite old stories.

Newt hears migrating birds outside, and raids the window. Pye was soon to follow. Newt’s pooch there isn’t a big tummy, just fur. 
Brisk weather outside – lovely stuff, helps my breathing quite a bit. I could actually see my breath the other night when we picked up last minute gift bags for Tina’s party last night…we’re hitting my seasonal weather of choice. I’m looking forward to wearing a jacket.
Dashed off to the Giant with BHK – we bought some cold cuts and cheese to make ourselves some picnic lunch outside… sat on the bench and made each other sammiches. Best meal I’ve had in a while – I’d rather eat stuff that fresh and enjoy the weather than go to a big restaurant. I really preferred it to tonight’s spaghetti dinner, in fact. Louise is renowned for for her spaghetti sauce, but I’m more of a fan of (Gordon Ramsey alert) Simple / Rustic style of cooking. In fact, BHK and I both have been found using that as commentary on food (and whatever else) these days. Like calling Marco Polo out… if one of us says Simple there is bound to be an echo of Rustic not too far behind. Hey, it’s better than picking up his swearing habit, I guess.
Louise’s sauce and pasta was supplemented by Tina’s new beau Matt’s meatballs, which I hear were pretty tasty, especially the beef. The turkey ones looked good, but maybe a bit dry. His sauce looked decent – I wonder how it mixed with Louise’s?
The in-laws brought salad, and BHK made the birthday cake – carrot, with autumnal colored sprinkles in the cream cheese frosting. it was pretty darn tasty – somehow, still warm after our meal.
Tina got a lot of jewelry as loot – we gave her 1001 places to see before you die , some pedicure knickknacks and a necklace with a pearl and a pink shell motif. Louise did pearls for her too.. very similar to those she got BHK for her b’day. In-laws got her a heart necklace and earring set in sterling (I think), and some nice black gloves. I don’t know what Matt got her.
I won our game of apples to apples (that’s what we picked up last minute earlier – it was that or play boggle… and not a lot of folks have the scrabble / spelling ferocity or Carcassonne bent that BHK and I do) – since there were 7 of us (Adam had to bail early for his church group) we played to 5 victories best answer was Larry’s “wood chipper” to “sappy”.

Calvert county fair – we only popped in for a moment to look at the critters,check out the crafts and produce competition, grabbed a free book each from the library tent and then got a Corn dog for BHK and a lemonade for myself… however we paused a few times to do some extra purchases on the way out.

I like this one the best of the day – near another old corn maze and a bounce house shaped like a jack o’lantern.
First item – pear butter for us, cherry-apple cider for me, peach-apple cider for BHK, and grape-apple butter as a gift for Larry.
Most impressive was our encounter with Hoggette Spiggy – I was very impressed with the amount of good that they’ve done over the years for Children’s Charities – over 100 mil since 1983! We were only out and about for a brief period, but it was good to get a touch of fresh air after being under wraps this week. We spent the majority of the evening in the loft, relaxing and watching far too much tivo. Star Wars Family Guy? meh. interesting recapture of the shots, but not worth a whole episode. New Simpsons was a standard new episode – best part was the opening taking place in the aftermath of the movie. Best part about snuggling in and watching tv is the snuggling, for sure.

Calvert County fair is this weekend… I don’t know if I’m up to it, but we can surely check it out.
I haven’t eaten anything more solid than blueberry yogurt since Tuesday. I think that I’ll be up for something with a bit more texture by the time the weekend is over, though. Tonight’s meal of soft noodley-cheesy-tomato-saucy goodness was just right. Salad was a little hard on the throat, but not bad!
Watched Revenge of The Pink Panther with the in-laws and Louise… we quickly crashed out.

OK, enough of this mess – I’ve gone to the doctor – the muscle aches have mercifully abated, but it’s even harder to constrict my throat than before… head is pounding, and I’ve been laying down so much that my back was starting to really hurt. Now I’m on Amoxicillin 500mg 3x a day for a week… that should slap this bug on the butt.
BHK picked up our pottery! Her mug is amazing… I must put pictures up of how it turned out – the green and purple tones are perfect. I’m also very pleased at how well my little volcano board / icehouse stash box turned out, too! The colors got a lot more vivid, post-firing.
On the way home, spied a new neighborhood kitten – maybe 2-3 weeks old… the mama was right around the side of the house, but it took all my might (in my already weakened state) to say no to a pickup of a little black and white tuxedo before we spotted her.
Today is my Brother’s 35th birthday. We’re sending him a copy of Fluke, which I think that he’ll enjoy quite a bit. I wanted to send him some pin-up type goodies too, but that may or may not get his whole shipment confiscated.
Watched the season Premieres of My Name is Earl, Ugly Betty and The Office. Also watcher the mockumentary Werner Herzog – Incident at Loch Ness… not so great.
Also saw the Bionic Woman… I have a long-time fondness for the old one, and this new one by comparison was pretty weak.
Personal Biases against –
- I don’t like nanobots as a plot device. Boring.
- Too much pseudo-Matrix type combat
- Terrible dialogue
- inclusion of obligatory hacker-character
- “Pleasantly goofy” factor is gone
Possible Pluses –
- I like the “Prototype Bionic Loon” part
- Maybe Bigfoot? Unlikely.
- No Lee Majors Crossovers. Probably. Though I’d be for it if he wore a red track suit and a cheesy 70s moustache.
I’m pretty impressed with LJ’s new snapshot link (Third part of this entry ) – it works especially well with wikipedia links. Interesting that you can see “similar searches” … not sure where current hurricane conditions in the Atlantic have to do with hello kitty, but who can say why a person clicks somewhere? It works especially well with art/scan communities that post links for dial-up folks… just hover and peek – spares a lot of lj-cut effort.

Holy cow – Last night was nuts. Fever dreams of being compressed and spread out over a latticework of red and purple circles – I felt like I was a wad of pizza dough, being roasted and smashed… stretched and smeared while being roasted from inside. Combine suffocation with the feeling of having your joints twisted.
It sucked. Sure, not so bad now that it’s passed, but heck… that may’ve been the worst fever/fever dream I’ve ever had.
BHK and the boys have been sweethearts and help immensely.
Caught up with out Tivo’ed Kitchen Nightmares – both British and USA versions. Also bagged some Eureka, the new House, too. There are benefits of being so wrecked that you can’t read a book or surf the web properly, after all!
I’m still of the opinion that UK’s Ramsey is far different than the USA one, but the American gross-out factor is winning me over a bit. Cripes… I don’t know why they don’t just shut a place down entirely if they get caught serving food that could kill a person.
Turning Points is dangerously similar to my concept for Pumpkin… I may need to revise my maze-y aspect to the game. Worse yet, it may be a better game! Pumpkin may go into a fundamental rethink at this point.

I’m feeling a little sick today – sore joints, sore throat, only on the right-hand side. Getting chills – I rarely get cold. (edit – I’m full blown destroyed. by the time I got home, I could barely walk or function. Severe fever, muscle aches. went to bed on arrival, and burned up all night)

She also brought home lots of fun loot for Halloween. Orange/mango candy corn, Dwight Schrute fridge magnets, and a cool back-lit pirate silhouette!
