9001 – Monday

Hm… Archie McPhee has some nifty zombie toys. I wonder how they’d look on my desk at work? I wonder what other folks would think?

Tigger gaining weight – put her on diet kitty food… I wonder if she thinks that she needs to stock up, in case of being on her own again? She’s not as svelte as she used to be. I think Newt and Pye need to visit her, and give her a running around the house partner or two.

I was creaky this weekend, but am feeling better this evening. A severe case of stumble-thumbosis overcame me this weekend, possibly due to poor sleep on Saturday? Well rested today, and things seem much more in control.

We opened up the pickles ! While a trifle mushy, they aren’t nearly as over-spicy as I’d feared. I wonder how Miz Pix is doing, speaking of pickles?

Final counts on the 2007 summer Icehouse game competition are in – Pylon , Subdivision and Zamboni Wars won the challenge. I’m surprised that Penguin Soccer didn’t do better. All the victors have valid games, but PS just had a fun theme and a reasonable set of rules, especially the 2-player option. I think that it seemed a little skewed, given that they didn’t penalise missing entries.

More pictures of yesterday’s shenanigans – A Corn Cop, Bunnies, and a pumpkin patch.

First day of Autumn! As Lileks put it: The trees have started to tip; the quotient of green diminishes daily. I wonder if we’d love fall less if the colors were ugly; do we like the colors simply because we’re used to them? If everything turned turquoise and pink one year we’d be horrified (well, maybe not BHK) , but if they’d been turning those shades all our lives we’d see nothing wrong. It makes you wonder how much of our fall routines are owed to long-buried instinct. Perhaps we wear brown because there’s an ancient piece of brain-code telling us we should blend in, because there might be tigers about.

To celebrate, we got iced pumpkin coffee drinks and muffins, went to a school supply store to buy cool dice. (Got some for me to game design with, and a few as gift ideas.) Included in the loot were triple dice,(I picked ones with three different colors inside – a red, white, and blue) double dice, foam dice and blank dice (just white cubes you can draw things on), not to mention a few gel pens, index card pads, and other school-supply type goodies.

Went on a tour of a corn-maze, got a pumpkin right out of the patch, petted some goats / sheep / bunnies and pigs, rode a tractor!

made a volcano board tile for some of the test games I’ve been working on, while bhk made a franken-mug – I goofed, and did black lines between the squares… I suspect that it’d have looked better if I’d left ’em on white. Ah well, live and learn. Only $7 to make a 6″ square tile.. I imagine that I’ll be making more in the near future. BHK has been there before, has made several mugs of assorted green-tints.

Pictures shown of BHK’s mug and my tile are pre-firing – they’ll be much more vibrant and glossy once put to the flame.

Also shown – cool Halloween bowl that we wish to replicate, only more “Day of The Dead-ish”, and the boys lurking on newtcam.

Last Palindromic number until 9009, Which isn’t really that far off.. a week or two, give or take.

Long day at work… lots of time compression due to projects, budget, etc. I’ve got some good teammates and I feel confident that it’ll all work out solidly.

Noisy alphabet icon origin

Saw a chipmunk yesterday on the way to work with BHK… first time in the city. That little guy could *run*…. unlike the groundhogs around here, which pretty much just shamble.

Here comes the Equinox.. First Day of Autumn is on Sunday, and the leaves here already beginning to turn.

GORDON Ramsay made a spectacle out of his testicles by burning them on a stove.

He said: “The other day I was standing too close to the stove when I was cooking.

“I was wearing these cotton trousers and underneath I was going commando, suddenly, I felt this searing heat. I went, ‘F**k me, b*****ks to that,’ and for once I was spot on. My balls were burning.”

The 40-year-old then rushed straight to a private London clinic where an ultrasound scan was performed.

“I burnt my right b*****k and I’m in absolute agony,” he added, “You wouldn’t believe how much this hurts,”

Gordon continued: “I went to the hospital because of the excruciating pain. People think I went in for a knee injury, but that’s bulls**t.”

Moment of Lyric – This Must Be The Place – Talking Heads

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb – burn with a weak heart
(So I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It’s ok I know nothing’s wrong . . nothing

Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you’re standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up + say goodnight . . . say goodnight

Home – is where I want to be
But I guess I’m already there
I come home – -she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can’t tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this where I’ll be . . . where I’ll be

Hi yo We drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I’m just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I’m dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head Ah ooh

Overslept – quick post while BHK gets ready. I feel bad – I wasn’t ready when my ride came to get me to the train.

Yummy, simple meals lately. Stir-fry broccoli w/tofu and carrot over brown rice day before yesterday and garden burgers with fried potatoes last night. Good stick to your ribs type stuff.

Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares – USA is a bit different than the UK version. I anticipate a physical fight in one of these, given our continent’s “Wild West” proclivities. You just can’t bawl some people out like he does.

Good synopsis here.

Game ideas developing in my head – Giants and Dwarfs, Pumpkin, and Rabbit, Fox, Bear (Brier Patch) – all are in the most germ-like beginnings.

Giants and Dwarfs is an “ants vs elephant” or Ogre “Big tank(s) vs many infantry” type theme.

Pumpkin is a multi-player maze game through a pumpkin patch. Possibly Team oriented, or every man for himself. (or both.) I like the idea of using eeore’s chessboard wedges for each player. Complexity seems to go up per increment/player.

RFB is a variation on King’s Table. (Hunter vs hunted) – Added theme of a Brier patch, and Uncle Remus.

Fun Quiz… I’m especially partial to the program that assembles the blueprint parts together!

Your home is a

Gamer’s Hideout

Your kitchen is stocked with chips, dips, and assorted caffeinated beverages. There’s a pantry with emergency backup caffeinated beverages. You also have some breakfast cereals in there, but you haven’t had breakfast since last Spring. Your master bedroom has blankets printed with images of Mario and Link. Your study includes unread copies of various gamer magazines, each purchased for the free demo CDs.

Your home also includes a roost for griffons. You’ve never actually seen a griffon, but you keep the roost ready anyway. Your guests enjoy your collection of every console and associated game ever made. Except the Intellivision — those controllers drive them NUTS. Outside is the moat that protects your home from goblin invaders and extended family.

Below is a snippet of the blueprints:

Find YOUR Dream Home!

We do have a moat, actually – and our pantry is similar.

Discussions last night include a few oddball words and definitions.

Macerated (person meant lacerated, I think)
bob’s your uncle (Person used “your aunt’s your uncle”)
how’s your father (Person outright disbelieved the slang usage, and I was surprised to find out it was more than just a “rub”)

BHK likes Siouxie and the Banshees, and mocks Devo. I like ’em both, but I reverse the charges just to be contrary.

We opted out of Yo-yo girl cop… didn’t hold us for 30 min, not worth continuing. Instead, we went with Ramsey’s Kitchen nightmares.

Forgot to mention yesterday that La Fiesta is dropping in our estimation (save for the yummy mole’) and Mexico restaurant is becoming a clear winner.

Maggie Moo’s Caramel ice cream mixes well with the chocolate fudge.

I eat chips and salsa poorly with a numbed upper lip.

Capitol City Carnival… Maybe I’ll see if BHK and I can swing by. I do like me some Fishbone.

on-demand, social manufacturing; design, share, and buy laser-cut products from a variety of materials

Lots of gameboard ideas going on, especially volcano. I’m thinking about variants of color, size and shape could be a lot of fun. A custom volcano board with a green top and frosted clear bottom would be great fun for under-lighting, and perfect for me.. especially if I can build the whole thing to spec.

Also thinking about custom etching designs on the surface… there’s a lot of potential here.

Vector drawing is key – I should ask Sammy how he’s progressing in that arena. Heck, I should just say hi to him, anyhow! Maybe Cyn would have an interest in this, too. She’s got some keen illustration skills. (Though my crude palm doodles might look sort of nifty etched on stuff, too.)

Speaking of laser cut stuff, I love this guy’s custom skateboards.

Relaxing nighttime plans for BHK and me the coming week or so ahead:

Yo-yo Girl Cop, The Number 23, and a few rousing games of Penguin Soccer, Martian Chess and Zamboni Wars over popcorn should set us right. Tucking into bed early so we can be up for tomorrow’s Bluegrass Festival.

BHK has been excelling at boardgames lately, especially territory types like Othello(Reversi), Ponte del Diavolo , Just 4 Fun and as always, Pente(we both seem to prefer the 2 or 3-capture variant Keryo-Pente). I still am partial to Hexxagon, Hey-That’s my Fish, and Carcassone H&G (She also is superb at those) – I’m really beginning to dig War of the Roses, which I wouldn’t mind tweaking a bit into an Icehouse/treehouse game.

Speaking of games… Talisman is back? I wonder if they fixed some of the unbalancing aspects, or if they’re remaining true to the original.

Virtually no homeless issues in North Beach… mainly because there’s no support system here… however, I’ve noticed that there are many, many tent cities under the bridges in DC, especially near to the subway track zones. I had my first experience with a guy coming onto the subway, and doing the “may I have your attention, would someone please give me 25 cents so I can get a bus at the next stop?” – I hadn’t seen that since riding the bus in Broward / Dade.

Trip to the doc implies some work to be done. Dentally, I need a mouthful of fillings. Elsewhere, I need to work on my weight, my allergies, my back and leg.

All things in time – Got a few fillings yesterday I need to do 2 or 3 more visits. the bridge and cracked tooth will be dealt with in January.

Random find. A solar-powered bible. Perfect for the Christian Castaway, I guess!

Oh, come on… now the smeller is blamed rather than the smelly? Stinky is in the nose of the sniffer? I’ll leave out the almost obligatory sci-fi / gaming convention comment.

did some apple picking at the blue house

watched Ramsey’s Kitchen nightmares
Started watching Yo-yo Girl Cop
Gave up and posted – then off to bed
super tired, but cough kept me sitting up for a bit.

I grabbed this from yoames / phillykat / pilarcruz and countless others.

1. Go to http://www.careercruising.com/.
2. Put in Username: nycareers, Password: landmark.
3. Take their “Career Matchmaker” questions.
4. Post your top ten results.

Here’s mine – (I kept going, to answer all the questions. My first pass had a lot more computer/social worker stuff)

  1. Epidemiologist – Sounds interesting, but I don’t have *any* solid training for it. Could come in handy for the coming zombie apocalypse… or preventing one! Best case, already in a clean house-type bunker. Worst case, that’s where the epidemic starts. I guess if I worked for a villain, before dying, I could at least say that I worked in a lair fashioned inside of a dormant volcano, under the sea in a bubble-city, or from a satellite lab in high-earth orbit.
  2. Oceanographer – I still haven’t finished reading Fluke, but I do enjoy marine biology. I imagine the optimal life doing that sort of thing… maybe like an idyllic remake of the Flipper TV or Jonny Quest. Living in the keys, fighting pirates, discovering sea-monsters, etc. Would I get a hydrofoil and cool gadgets?
  3. Anthropologist – Humans are pretty fascinating critters. I suspect that I’d be more interested in this than Oceanographer. Field work at the ocean would be more palatable to me, though. Again with the Jonny Quest. Maybe with a little less or Race Bannon’s “Take that, you heathen savages!” I will, however accept bad guys that die with a scream of “AIeeee!” as they fall from a cliff, get disemboweled by Yeti, or are shot by whatever helpful bodyguard/guide-types are along for the ride.
  4. Writer – I try to do that here and again, but the time factor keeps popping up. I really need to devote an hour a day to it, and I simply don’t have the will to set aside the time to do it properly. I’ll always love doing it, but I’d have to have a way to support myself and my family if it were my full-time gig. I know quite a few writers, both professional, “wannabe” pro, and strong amateur, most of them very talented at word-craft. Given the amount of junk writing that’s out there, I’m fairly confident that I could find a niche with the right publicist. Also would be handy for “Murder, HE wrote” mysteries later in life. If Angela Lansbury can do it, so can I.
  5. Botanist – I do like plants. Do I like ’em enough to make them my life? Not sure. The Sea and Humans certainly have more of my interest. Now, if it were the phytoplankton people from Atlantis, I guess I’d be set… especially if they need some Research done on their databases. see below. I know what happens to Botanists. Ask Jason Woodrue, Ted Sallis, Alec Holland, Pam Isley, or any of dozens of folks turned into plant-critters, green psychos, pod people or muck-encrusted mockeries of men. Maybe when pot is legal, or if I lived on the planet Mardru.
  6. Library Technician – been there, done that. Fun and rewarding if you surround yourself with the right people. (true of most any job, really) It can be pretty thankless, and while I like books, I’m a far stretch from Burgess Meredith in that Twilight Zone episode.
  7. Historian – So very variable. Some parts of the past are amazing… other bits are deadly dull. Plus, the pay issue again- I imagine it’s difficult to live on the average historian’s wages. How do I become an authority?
  8. Researcher – If I could make any good, livable wage doing this for an organization that wasn’t a super-villain, I’d probably dig it. Depends on the research, though… do I really want data about women’s shoe sizes, and how they compare to hemlines? Fairly close to historian, Above. Job description is too vague.
  9. Database Developer – Heck, that’s a chunk of what I’m doing in my gig right now! I enjoy the challenges and solving the puzzles that arise in most of the larger builds that I’ve had to do.
  10. Multimedia Developer – I’ve dabbled with this… seems like a very competitive field to get a gig that’s worthwhile.

Web Developer, Systems Programmer and such all appear in the top 40, further down the list.

Limited edition Raspberry M&M’s are pretty good. Not amazing, but not too shabby. I prefer the holiday mint ones….and wouldn’t mind if they did orange-chocolate M’s.

Getting this entry out of the way early, as I don’t forsee much computer time tonight… see two lines up. I’m looking forward to a nice evening of Movies and games in our little treehouse loft, or in the living room. (depending on our desire to watch stuff on the laptop or the dvd player.

[edit – Strike that, we had Chinese at in-laws and watching “Because I said so”. Maybe Games and yo-yo tomorrow! Good food and good company tonight – movie was meh.]

8990 – Thursday

Hm, approaching 9000 entries. How many days has this thing been active? Let’s ask date and time.

From and including: Friday, May 19, 2000

To and including: Thursday, September 13, 2007

It is 2674 days from the start date to the end date, end date included

Or 7 years, 3 months, 26 days including the end date.

So, I’m still catching up to the old many quick posts a day to the newer, usually one-post per day. I still have an average of what… about three and a third posts a day if I take the whole into account?

Shopped for b’day presents tonight – we have gift cards from B&N, and we use ’em! We got our reward of a choco-chip cookie or two to take the shopping edge off, but zonked out as soon as we got home. I got to feeling a bit creaky near the end of our expedition… I really need to change out of work shoes once I’ve left work.

Ate at DuClaw and had the Brew sampler (You get a 4 oz taste of all the beers that they have on tap at that time.)- not bad! I rather liked a few of the microbrews, and getting an a lot of soft-pretzel related meal items made it quite the little pseudo-bavarian event. Twisted Kilt wasn’t my fave, though BHK liked it – I think I was more partial to the BA Blonde Ale or the Misfit Red ale. The Crab dip was a bit spicy.

Went to the in-laws after work for a junk-food delight – veggie chili dogs, fries, and corn. I was totally beat – BHK and I fairly ate and ran. About all I did before going to bed was make a few game moves… didn’t even really read before hitting the sack.

Memory Issues- and it’s not like I did a lot of drinking, drugs or had blunt head trauma as a kid. That I recall, anyhow.

I don’t remember a lot about my childhood. Sometimes, it seems like I only recall stuff from high-school onwards, and it’s been that way for a very long time. Sure, there’s the odd tv show, or family outing… but the majority is missing without something to spark a memory. Written journals help some.

I don’t remember when I first learned to read.

I don’t really remember when my parents divorced, or how we were told that they were splitting up.

I don’t remember getting to the hospital where my father died…how I got there, who was with me. I remember seeing him on the bed, with the monitors running.

I only vaguely remember moving out of the house at 17, over thanksgiving.

I don’t remember much of my time spent at home at age 15-16, outside of working on the old Atari 800 bbs.

I don’t remember reading many of my childhood books… I remember the stories, but not the actual running of my eyes over the words.

I only remember a few of my classmates, and the bulk of those were in high school. I do remember my friends in first grade, and my fellow safety patrol members in 5th.

I remember members of my social groups – gaming, music, theater, and so on.

I can’t remember my fellow boy scouts, but I vaguely remember Mr Pierce, mostly because I went back to the same troop with BA and SJ during their scout phase.

I can remember a few of the gang from Civil Air Patrol… but I can’t recall my flight instructor at all. I know it was a man, but I couldn’t pick him out of a lineup.

BHK and I skipped on movie and dinner at Friendly’s – too much fair food and activity made it simpler to just head on home after work.

Rough day, but worth having. I got pretty upset and discombobulated about my brother’s situation, as I am prone to be – especially with his birthday coming up and talking to the momster on the phone. I’ve got to remember to put on better armor before picking up the phone at this time of year. It really wore me out, and I’m glad that I got to flush my system a little bit.

Future 2007 events in a nutshell. Some stressful, some wonderful, some just a reminder to myself to shoot a card or friendly howdy out.

  • Bro’s Birthday in about 2 weeks.
  • Wedding anniversary and Halloween at the end of October. Trip? Party?
  • Graypumpkin’s Birthday
  • Eryx’s Birthday
  • Mom’s Birthday
  • Bro will be out and about mid-November, but will not be in our vicinity.
  • Thanksgiving.
  • Mom and Wilt will be visiting my family up here for Christmas week.

They set up the hay-bale spider at the pumpkin patch!!

Slept in until about 10, and then we toddled off to the Renfaire. Highlights of the day were Johnny Fox, Hack & Slash, Swami Yohmahmi, Horsemen, Bear-baiting and Witch Trial, and time at the Kadon games building again. BHK and I swapped off on taking pictures with the new camera – viewable here.

BHK got pulled into participation on two shows, as well – As Hack’s Mom in the Cruel and Unusual Show, and face-spike examiner (she got to keep the spike – eww) at the Swami’s. Also obtained was a Swami Yo sticker.

We looked at quite a few boardgames, but none grabbed us hard enough for an immediate purchase. I was a little disappointed in Y, (it seemed a bit limited) but Star may have some longer-term potential – maybe a bit too much like go, though. I’d say that my favorite of the wooden games so far is still Quintillions– I’m tempted to make my own set as well as purchase the original from the source. The Kadon people have some nifty plastic art/ game boards… I wouldn’t mind commissioning a custom 8×8 volcano-type one with a frosted transparent bottom for playing sleestak/pylon icehouse games.

Food Sampled at the Fair by BHK and/or me –

Mac & Cheese on a stick.
BBQ Turkey on a bun (BHK only)
Deep-fried Oreos (I wonder how many days-worth of calories *that* was?)
Broccoli Cheese Soup in a bread bowl
[edit: Chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick!]
A ton of water / diet pepsi

Went right from the Rennfest to the in-laws for supper… like we could eat anything after all of that stuff… still, I managed a plate, sans seconds.

snagged from all over-

1. Whats something thats heavily weighing on your mind?
Solidification of current programming tasks overseas. taking time, doing it right.

2. Whats one thing you’ve learned from a good friendship gone bad?
Communication is key.

3. Whats one thing you’ve learned lately from love?
There’s a time to lead, and a time to follow… mostly though, it’s a time to walk side by side.

4. Is there anyone special in your life in general at the moment?
Dern tootin’!

5. Whats a happy time you’ve had in the past week?
I’ve had quite a few! Review the last 7 days in the journal for more info. Overall, I just love being with BHK.

6. Is there anything in your past that you’d like to try again?
I don’t want one of those weird time-travel paradox things to break my current existance, which is pretty dang keen. a simulation viewer, sure, I wouldn’t mind seeing a few revisions on key events in school, socialization, and so on.

7. Who do/did you like to spend your nights with?
BHK, Newt, Pye.

8. Are you an emotional person?
I certainly can be.

9. Are you self conscious?
I can be shy at times, or concerned about “bull in a china shop” syndrome.

10. Do you think of others before yourself?
Generally so, but I have lapses.

11. What’s something that can always make you feel better?
BHK hugs, Newt Headbutts, Pye flurfies.

THERE IS NO NUMBER 12. Why do people remove questions?!?!

13. Where do you see yourself this time next year?

19. What are you most looking forward to?

That’s in February… I don’t know just yet, but I imagine it’ll involve family, cake and a buttered nose.

22. Do you think anyone in general out there loves you?
I feel certain that it’s so.

23. When do you think the world will end?
My world, humanity as a whole, or planet earth? I think that Earth will be a round a long time, Man, not as long. Me, not as long as that. I suspect that the end of mankind will be the result of either a terrible disease or accident beyond our control. I fear no zombies, aliens or plastics.

24. Whats the most expensive piece of clothing you own?
One of my business suits, I think. A single piece? A jacket, I guess. Not too expensive.

37. Have you ever been on a roller coaster?
Yes, many… but not for ages.

8985 – sat

Slow day at home this morning/ early afternoon.. I was tired/ headachy and BHK still allergy-ridden, so we took it easy and napped / rested until the sun dropped lower in the sky. We hung out, watched a few episodes of League of Gentlemen – I was tired and grumpy, and still quite enjoyed the casual ly surreal evil of it all.

Headed off to annapolis and grabbed a snack at The Fix deli – good potato knishes, and BHK’s Turkey Sammich looked tasty. (some new people working got the order a little out of whack, but it was minor stuff like leaving off condiments and not toasting bread.. easily fixed.)

Right about 5ish, we headed out to hit the Annapolis games club – BHK, Brent, Alison, Paul, Neil, James, Brien and I played many rounds of apples to apples, Fluxx, Aquarius, and Chrononauts (Early American history version) – surprisingly, Aquarius beat Fluxx as the popular new game of the night. I think the matching and quick launch rules were just a little bit faster to run with, due to no body text on any of the cards. Brien seemed to really dig Fluxx, however – He brought a lot of Rio Grande games and Big M – I really wanted to investigate Power Grid and Manila. I suspect that we’ll be playing more of the German-style games next go-round at the main club. Brent and Alison invited us to thier regualr game night at home, too – about 5-20 people show up at any given session, and it should be fun. I liked the group – everyone was interested in learning new things, playing fair and being good sports. We all ordered chinese food at about 7, and I think we called it a night at just about 11:30ish.

We stayed too late to bounce from there to the Cheeky Monkey Sideshow, but we’ll probably catch Swami Yohmahmi tomorrow at the renfest.
