8697 – Hap-Pye New(t) Year! 2007

Something I post at the top of every new year, and I appreciate the words more with every additional trip around the sun.

Love is
is not rude,
it is not self seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices in truth.
It always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.

-1 Corinthians 13:5&6

Newt!

Newt didn’t make it to the countdown, apparently.

The boys like to wrestle, which worries BHK a smidgen, but I think they’ll be jim-dandy.

618 entries this year… lower content this time around, mostly due to my living life, and not having much time to report it. I haven’t had any time recently to read much LJ at all, though I have tried to poke a nose in here and there when I could. (975 in 2006, 716 in 2004) – one of my new years thoughts is to try to write at least 30 minutes a day in the journal, just to hone my skills.

We move into the bigger house on or about 1/15… once all the utilities and such have been activated. The big TV and some small amount of furniture is already over there, but we haven’t begun the big move in earnest as yet.

I’m going to miss our Tannenbaum… I’ve enjoyed the giant beastie in the living room the last month or so. When it goes, I figure it means we’ll be headed to the new place shortly thereafter.

Danny turns 45 tomorrow. weird thought. That means I’ll be 38 a month from then. The years seem to just fly.

Last night, we got together with the normal motley crew to dine on tacos, rodeo beans, assorted fixins and far too many holiday pastry-type goodies. We watched “Failure to Launch” until about 10 seconds of midnight, counted down, and then watched fireworks over the Chesapeake bay. After, we started to watch Prime, but got tuckered out due to it’s general suckitude. Chick flicks were remedied by today’s viewing of Buckaroo Bonzai, Kung Fu Hustle and Fierce Creatures

Quite a busy day today… Xmas shopping and visiting with Tina and Doug were the biggest bits. Ended the day watching Grey Gardens, which was amusing at first and then sad, and then just sort of turned into a codependent mother and daughter bickering at one another in a run-down mansion filled with cats and raccoons. I don’t think I’ll be seeing the movie about them when it’s released next year.

Oh, we also went to a comic store that will probably be a new haunt for me – green alien head. Some nice folks, and a few people that are interested in purchasing my heroclix / mage knight doubles. I picked up a few things from the heroclix dollar bin for the christmas tree… wendigo, sasquatch and some others, plus bhk and I split a booster pack of horrorclix. aside from the fact that someone nicked one of the figures and closed it back up (a dire wolf), we got some goodies in there too. A Scarecrow, zombie cop, and an exorcist priest fig that a lot of fun. No Zombie Lawyer.. but maybe I can trade for one. They do gaming there, but I’m not sure if I’m wanting to hop into that scene just yet… might be worth a drop-in visit though. They do play pirates, heroclix and such… I’d like to maybe do a Champions game sometime, just for old times sake, but I suspect the group dynamic wouldn’t cut it for me.

Also found a site for LAN parties, world of warcraft and other such stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to see a place like that… I may try to bid on building them a website.. might make some coin and meet some counterstrike teammates for when big brain is reassembled.

It’s been rather difficult to shop for the Mrs as yet, given that she and I are joined at the hip (and I like that) – it makes it tricky to buy a surprise for her. I’m going to try to hitch a ride with either Tina or Larry to do some indy shopping, otherwise, it’ll have to all be done online.

Tina was amazingly generous with the wedding present, by the way. A huge collection of light green crockery a green vacuum cleaner and a wad of dough to start us on our nuptial way.

I still have to mail Danny’s Xmas prezzie – keeping things pretty inexpensive this year, due to the no-job situation. Mostly gifting folks on BHK’s side of the family. On my end, it’s just Wilt & Momster and Danny. Everyone else is getting at best a card. (not that I usually gift a lot of folks, anyhow)

I’m way behind in reading LJ. Or really writing in it. My new life is both very hectic and domestic at the moment, and I’m loving every frickin’ minute of it. Money will be tight but manageable for the next few, while I continue to pursue a gig. Just a numbers game at this point.

Spam content is getting more interesting – most recent:

The cool air is a welcome relief, after a week of record-breaking temperatures.

I think that I may return to Hagerstown on Wednesday, so I can watch the students solo. It all started for me with a father employed by IBM.

Many of our family members who are over five years old joined the church choir and shared their musical gifts. The ability to shape easily information, especially on a global scale, is democratizing. Arguably, as an academic, I often find the freely available web based dictionaries to lack substance and reliability, especially when comparing synonyms. I love to look at it, but I dislike feeling it. The value of timeshifting makes podcasting one of the most useful digital applications. How the PC has affected the face of America is one of the questions that have been rolling around inside of my head for over two decades. and I am not a normally a computer gamer! CAP Cadets Solo – flying – Says Dave CAP Cadets Solo I received word today that all of the cadets at the solo school in Hagerstown, Maryland had completd their first solo flights. As a child, I was taught to accurately compute my sales totals, estimate the sales tax, and determine the anticipated change that I would receive for each purchase that I made. Looking past the functional steps toward the applicability and the outcome-creation potential forms the bond of trust that is inherent in an embracing of any technology. I would have to ask my wife to be sure; she has a better memory for these mundane details, than I. I have found another helpful use for my handheld computer: logging my aircraft flights. These are brisk, factual and come out my recent experience; the content is often dispassionate and dry. She created a convenient dining experience, without intruding on our private conversation. The video recording that we made and burned to DVD will surely be one of our favorites, even fifty years from now. Skills not practiced are lost. We learn to like those we love across the piles of crab shells. The legal decisions require law enforcement to first show probable cause to believe that a crime has been or is being committed: the same standard that applies to search warrant requests. Dad felt that he owed much of his personal success to his being fortunate to earn a job with IBM after returning home from the Korean Conflict. now let’s go over to the losers where Diane is standing by. I have noticed this behavior before, on the part of the locals. A single e-mail message or web page download my comprise dozens of packets, each of which takes a different route to reach its intended destination. However, when listening to digital audio or watching online video, a delayed packet or two is not only noticeable, it is annoying.

Xmas trees up (undecorated) at home (the blue house) and at the in-laws. BHK made some seriously tasty pasta for the ‘laws, Tina, Adam, Doug and me… They were super yummo.

The tree smells really good in here.

Got the Christmas Tree with BHK and the in laws .. went to Friendship and got a pair of bang-up trees.. one for us and one for them. BHK likes trees *BIG*. No dinky little charlie brownies for her, no sir! We dropped the trees off and then went out to din-din at Applebee’s, and closed at the local giant box store to get some holiday supplies.

Had a nice time shopping with bhk, tina and chris – got a few stocking stuffers and some much needed sneakers. Newtcam is back up, now that I’m on the local network on lappie, though big brain is still packed. it won’t be 24/7 until I can find a good spot for it.

newton!

after shopping, we hit tt’s diner for some dinner, with mixed levels of culinary success, and then drove home through holiday lights, and a viewing of Elf while bhk slept on my lap on the couch. a good day, indeed.

a smidgen chillier out today, and I’m looking forward to the possibility of a white christmas… or maybe birthday. two christmases this year, one for doug, before he ships out for Iraq on the 15th, and another at the proper time. I’m pleased that doug makes tina happy… she deserves someone to make her feel good.

went with misti, bhk and em to see buga and neil tote a balloon in the richmond christmas parade – had a great time – aside from the obvious perq of bugah, there were also tiny shriner cars, a really overweight darth vader, cowboys, balloons of odd things blowing like the hindenberg, and more sousaphones than even john phillips could ask for. Odd thing, since the giant balloons were being hoisted through downtown richmond, they had to be lowered to duck under the street lights every few blocks.

misc pictures from road trip to md (including newt in lockdown, south of the border, and electric palm trees, as well as the parade) click here.

bro still is where he is… writing him a letter tomorrow or first thing monday.

after the parade and a quick trip to target to look for some xmas lights, we visited with misti, neil & co, bfore heading to the in-laws for dinner. long day, but a solid one… on the way back, we drove through DC, and I got to eyeball the washington monument and nation’a capital from the potomac bridge. more photos from that neck of the woods soon.

with that, I’m hitting the sack. until later, dear journal.
