8886 – Thursday –

Danny arrived yesterday with minimal difficulties. He’s currently reading Childhood’s End (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood’s_End ) The original, not the revised 1990 edition. I wonder how he’ll feel about the ending? I remember being a bit disappointed when I read it, but that was back in the 8th grade or so.

Tonight was going to end with a possible journey to Inkygypsy’s solstice party tonight with BHK and Danny, but Danny was pretty tuckered out from his visit to annapolis (as was I from a full work day), so we stayed home to unwind and relax a bit.  We played a couple of games of monsters menace america, and ate tasty stir-fry type stuff that BHK made… quite yummy, but we had to abandon the garlic-type tahini… it had gotten far too strong.

Learning more and more about the interaction of seaports and port authorities

(Primarily these – http://www.aapa-ports.org/, http://www.polb.com/contact/port_staff/default.asp, http://www.panynj.gov/DoingBusinessWith/seaport/html/apm.html, http://www.gaports.com/, http://www.panynj.gov/DoingBusinessWith/seaport/html/apm.html , but others as well)

and how they connect to other shipping arenas, like trucking and train freight. Currently, the whole gestalt is interesting – intermodal type transport certainly has advantages over sticking to a single method. I think that trains still hold the most fascination for me.

The more than 600 freight railroads operating today in Canada, Mexico, and the United States are vital to North America’s economic health. They form a seamless integrated system that provides the world’s most efficient, cost-effective freight service. North American railroads operate over 173,000 miles of track, and earn $42 billion in annual revenues.

Railroads remain the backbone of North America’s freight transportation network. In the U.S., railroads account for more than 40 percent of all freight transportation — and that’s more than trucks, boats, barges or planes.

Seventy percent of all automobiles produced in the U.S. move by train. So does 30 percent of the nation’s grain harvest and 65 percent of the coal, which, in turn, provides more than half of the nation’s electricity. Railroads move enough wheat to provide every man, woman and child a fresh loaf of bread six days a week… enough lumber to build almost three houses every minute of every day… and enough concrete to build 45 miles of new highway every day.

U.S. freight railroads are the world’s busiest, moving more freight than any rail system in any other country. In fact, U.S. railroads move more than four times as much freight as do all of Western Europe’s freight railroads combined.

Last day at the county gig was really sweet. I’d only been there a few months, but I feel like I’ve made a few good friends. They gave me an ice cream cake and a sweet card – they seemed genuinely sad to see me go. I’ll miss ’em, too. On the way into work, I saw a guy painting a picture of the courthouse… I struck up a conversation with him, and got a pretty detailed history of the area, how things have grown and changed. I really like Calvert County a lot.

Next on the list for the PSP is Hot Brain – releasing on Tuesday. I may wait and get a used copy, depending on how pricey it is, though.

Interesting article on how hard it is to afford living in DC… little wonder I’ll be commuting.

Good news for Jeff… he’s being paid full-time to maintain and upkeep hero machine! I’m glad he found a solid sponsor!

Neil and Bugah are coming up Tomorrow morning for a sleepover – Danny will be here on Wednesday to stay for a week. My new job starts on Monday.

BHK and I still have lots of prep work left to do, so I’ll catch you on the flip side, dear journal!

8875 – Carcassonne

Carcassone (Hunter and Gatherers) is more fun than I’d thought it would be. BHK and I played last night, and we were neck and neck throughout. I suspect that there will be some good tactics developed over the next two or three plays – especially on land development. It’s not complicated at all, and the play is fast. (Not as uncomplicated as blink, which we also played… which might be better suited to play with kids aged 12 and under.)

I wonder how good the other games in the series are? More of the same, but with different art? I’ll be investigating. We’ll certainly be playing at least one game with Danny when he’s up for a visit from 6/20-6/27GeotargetVisitor Map

Woke up bright and early to hit the book sale, but we were waylaid enroute by 2 yard sales – one benefitting local kids charities, and one for the cancer cure walk for life.

At the first yard sale, We obtained a copy of pride and predudice on dvd for $1, and about seven ps2 games (Pac-Man fever is the only one played thus far, but it’s my sort of thing… a bunch of cute mini-games played on a monopoly-style board) for a buck a throw as well. Also obtained were bake sale choco-chip cookies, and an old star trek game for the pc.

2nd yard sale – got still-shrinkwrapped copies of rook, snap, and a wooden gameboard for 7 in one (actually 6-in-one, as there are no chess pieces) – Checkers, Chinese Checkers, solitaire pegs, mancala, backgammon, tic-tac-toe. again for a buck apiece. Bhk got a complete works of EAPoe for a buck, too.

3rd yard Sale – I score a ti-85 calculator, bhk gets some sharp nail polish

Book sale, we snag a big ol bag of stuff, including vegetarian cookbooks, some jim bucher / ray bradbury stuff, and some still-usable technology sourcebooks for about $25. That’s less than $0.35 a lb, give or take.

We swung by Fabulous brew for medocre coffee and slow service, but the pancakes and home fries were yummy. BHK’s Bagel looked pretty tough… it was gnawed rather than chewed by her.

Returned home to dust our loot and peruse more closely – Found out that we were going to miss jimmy’s B-day and Grad party due to a schedule conflict. I feel guilty about that – I hope that we can take him out to lunch and goof with him sometime soon to make up for it. Fobbed off those test doritos on Adam – made with lard, so I don’t want ’em. I suspect the secret flavor is “double cheeseburger” or the like.

Later, we went to see the DC Divas women’s football team crush Boston Rampage – 70 to zero. Had fun shooting the Breeze with TM and her crew. Pictures on flickr, will add to here later. Highlights include cheese thrown into the audience during the 3rd quarter.

BHK and I went down to Solomon’s Island to take a little break. We were going to cruise on the Wm. Smith, but it was already chartered for the day. Instead of lamenting our situation, we opted to do a little river-otter watching and some light nature walk behind the marine museum. The otters were extra-bonus cute and playful today; I suspect that they were really digging the warm weather, and that our arrival right at feeding time had something to do with it. They had a tasty meal of fish, carrot and boiled egg, which sounded pretty darn good, actually, so we toddled off to the Captain’s Table for a little nosh, ourselves. Later we hit Target for a few sundry supplies – another deck chair, some bug spray, etc… and then continued to Game Stop to gather up 2 new (used, $12 each) games – Taiko drumming for the PS2, and Lumines for the PSP – Almost got marvel heroes, too, but they were out of stock on the used ones. (Bhk pointed out that they should give a new one, since it was being portrayed as available on the shelf, but I didn’t want to push – I still have Katamari and Lumines to work my way through)

Far too many pictures of otters, and other stuff will be coming in the days a head, I imagine.

Once we got home, we got a pleasant surprise in a new cover for our grill, along with a nice full tank of propane. I expect to be doing some outdoor cookery in the very near future. Veggie Burgers, Kabob, and whatever meat-stuff the rest of the family might like.

Once the sun came down, we went inside and watched Trekkies – I think it was a little enlightening for BHK about fandom, and why I feel about it the way I do, for both good and ill. I think the highlight of the night was the season finale of ugly betty – lots of cliffhangers in true soap style.

Sneakily added by BHK

– Secret confession time:
My favorite thing to do by SCottO B. Ear: I love love love to watch a double feature of Joy Luck Club and Steel Magnolias (Although sometimes I swap Steel Magnolias for Fried Green tomatoes). I always need at least 2 boxes of tissues and a whole can of general foods coffee when I do my double feature. I just snuggle under my comforter wearing my comfiest jammies and my furry pink slippers and cry myself a good one. Then I feel much better.

Oh and another confession this morning I compared my wife to a chimp. I reality I’m the one that tends to fling poo—so i retract any comparison I may have made. I’m a naughty bad husband–but a pretty good simian!

Here are some pictures from today’s sunny morning –

I love the boys… They both have come a long way in making the transition to a family.

A new bionic woman, eh? I have my doubts. Rebuilt both legs, one arm, an ear, and an eye this time around. Plus a deaf daughter and Rudy-type doc as a love interest.

Random Ray Bradbury factoid: Bradbury, despite writing about spaceships and interplanetary travel and having lived in Los Angeles for most of his life, has never driven a car. He attributes this to having seen a gruesome car accident when he was young.

8810 – RANDOM ACCESS

Work is interviewing for the network position today. I wonder when or if they’ll be asking me to sit with them today? I’m curious about the number of applicants.

When playing punch buggy my eyes tend to detect color first, then shape. I’m much less likely to see a white, black, gray/silver or navy blue bug than standouts like yellow, red or the brighter variants of blue and green. However, The “toaster” look of the Honda element is a good standout for me over colors. I can lock onto one of those much more easily than the bug. The dual-color ones seem to be easier for me to spot than the one-tones.

I have to dig up my birth certificate in order to get my driver’s license. It seems that my Florida state id isn’t enough. Bah.

Didn’t mow the lawn, and didn’t roto-till the garden, as it was too wet from the lovely rainy weekend. That’ll probably happen next Saturday.

Tomorrow, I’ll have been working for the county a month. That seems odd to me, somehow. I guess Friday will be a true work-month due to days off, etc.

Tina’s back from points elsewhere today, so we’ll probably have her over for an early dinner of falafel tonight. After that, I’m going to have to get one the stick, regarding the quest for more continuous employment.

Limited News source says that there are 21 dead at Virginia tech [edit- 32 dead, 28 wounded] – I don’t get how this happens. How broken in the head does a person have to be to run around a campus and start killing people with twin 9mm pistols? Sadly, my first mental image was that of the Shadow, with twin .45s barking out hot metal justice, but he’s a pulp fiction vigilante, not an actual insane non-fictional type being.

Found out that bro is breaking his probation already – Mom and WV went down to where they’d set his apartment up, and discovered that the place was empty. His probation officer called her looking for him, so it’s only a matter of time before he’s back in the clink. Turns out neither his rent, cell phone bill, nor his car insurance have been paid, so he’ll be driving with a suspended license in an uninsured vehicle. I’ll be checking the net periodically to let me know if he’s back in the pokey. [edit – he was evicted on 4/11]

I think I like stones and jewelry made from organic substances more than inorganic.

Pearls, amber, mastodon ivory, bone in general all had some sort of life-aspect about them before they were put into settings or whatnot.

Could the ghost of an oyster / tree haunt pearls / amber?

JD offered me some deer meat that he got while hunting. He bagged 13 last season, gave 10 to the hungry, and kept 3 in his freezer. The county electrician is apparently a great butcher.

3d movie entrance - day with robinsonwent to see meet the robinsons in 3-d – it was great! I think that BHK and I were the only adults in the theatre without a kid in tow… I highly recommend catching both it and the chip and dale / donald duck cartoon in 3-d at the beginning. (the Donald Duck was a Stereoscopic movie from the 50’s- 3D like the old sterogram style viewmaster reels.) Picture on the right is a cute little entrance folks made for the movie – 3-d glasses and large letters 3 and D on either side of the door.

text update – rewind – Another day at work, or another 7 hours, anyhow!

Was told by JD that there might be snow flurries this weekend on Saturday? So much for any roto-tilling or lying down of mulch I might’ve had planned. Hm, that sounds pretty darn domestic. Maybe I can get some studying in for my driving permit. I think that my back is in good enough shape to do so. It’s been over a decade since I’ve done any sort of parallel parking or a 3-point turn, but hopefully it’ll come back to me quickly.

The crew at my current gig is pretty sweet. Everyone seems to get along quite well, and is personable. JD and RD are brothers (25 and 17, respectively) and are very cool. KP digs the icanhascheezburger type sites like I do, and is worried a bit about the CDC’s Cancun hemorrhagic fever warning. DL is an old-school tech – knows his stuff and is on top of his game. KB is my immediate supervisor, and seems to be an amazingly kindhearted lady… Scouting, family oriented. JM got moved to the DB admin gig I was looking to, but I have no hard feelings about that. He knows his stuff, and has been here for 8 months, so they know him. Some recent rough patches in his life… lost his sister last weekend, has been sick, and lost his mother fairly recently as well. I hope the clouds part for him soon. SP is the Network head here, and she has her old painted character figurine from the D&D days… her kids are embarrassed for her, but I think that’s pretty spiffy. She also has 2 orange cats and a black one, so there’s plenty of critter talk there. KE is the sheriff’s sister in law, and is friendly and cracks the occasional joke here and there. WL is in the CAP, and I may join him at local meetings. GIS staff is also nifty, though I haven’t learned all the names over there yet. There are a few people I wave hello to when I pass them in the hall, but I have no idea who they are form the Dept of Aging and the Substance Abuse folks.

A? in the State’s Attorney office looks like Peewee Herman. No, Really.

Bake sale by the SO today – I wonder if the goodies will be as tasty as the Methodist stuff from last week. We still have about 1/8 of a pound cake that we got last go ‘round that will be hard to beat. It’s not too shabby to see Officers wearing bunny ears.

The plant life out here is shucking petals like crazy. It looks like someone spilled a massive pile of packing material and frosted flakes along the sidewalks and gutters… the wind from behind trailing cars or the occasional random breeze makes it fly up and whirl quite prettily. I pity folks with hay fever, however, as the trees are really sexing it up. Speaking of plant-sex, lots of fat, fuzzy little bumblebees are traversing the clover in our side yard lately. I really wouldn’t mind starting a hive out back, just to get some polish on my api-skills. Buzz buzz buzz. A little honeysuckle might be nice to add to the wildflowers around the fence out back, too. Mmm… I do like honey, like all stereotypical bears. (Actually, I’m pretty keen on Berries and pic-a-nic baskets, too, Boo-boo. Fish, not so much – Salmon are safe from me. I prefer Veggie Sushi)

Update – D’oh! I missed getting anything at the bake sale. It only ran from 8:30 to 11am, and I was in meetings or off site during that time. Fortunately, RD brought in doughnuts, so my pastry craving was sated. What will we do with BHK? No cake for her. Perhaps she’ll settle for me making a tasty din-din supplemented with an ice cream sammich for dessert.

BHK and I played the karaoke ps2 American Idol game last night… a lot of fun, more than I’d expected. Apparently, my skills are in the Tom Jones / Kim Karnes / Duran Duran / Everly Brothers arena, while BHK is more of a Billy Joel / Build me up, buttercup sort of singer. I blame my scratchy voice and poorer scores on remaining cough, but that’s just an excuse. BHK is superb at the thing, and I’m just pretty good. We’ll see what practice brings. Perhaps we’ll have a karaoke-off with Tina, Jimmy and Amanda for Easter.

On that note, we’re due for some egg-coloring in the next day or three, and egg salad or deviled eggs shortly thereafter.

Given that there might be flurries on Saturday (mid-20s to mid 40s Fahrenheit forecast), perhaps I’ll skip the sunrise Service on Sunday at the beach. Bay winds after a possible snow seem a bit too brisk for me.

I’m carbo-loading for lunch today. Toasted cheese bagel, some baked ritz-chips and a chocolate pudding snack pack. For the love of the children, why did I skip vegetables? I’ll make a point of getting some apples or grapes for next week.

The region I work in is near an area called Plum Point, but there are no plum trees. Pear, apple and cherry abound, not to mention fields of corn, soybean and tobacco (though tobacco is being phased out, even though it’s a big portion of Maryland history, down to the Calvert County flag). Also, there’s an area called Sam Hill… so now I can ask “What in Sam Hill?” with hope of an actual answer.

Been hearing good things about the revamp of Star Fleet Battles called Federation Commander – it sounds like it can be played by both normal humans as well as rule-monkey hardcore gamers. I think that I’ll work BHK into it after she gets over the Pirates addiction. (Free Sample Game here as a pdf from the homepage) I’m more likely to get the Romulan one first… it has Gorn Ships, too, even though Klingons are plenty keen.

BHK and I spent most of our waking day with the in-laws… What I thought would be a quick-ish trip to get some plywood became a pleasant all-day affair.

Firstly, we visited our snowman, now just a stick and bit of cork on the dock, since it’s 63 degrees outside.

It was a nice day on the bay

Later we went to Leonardtown and stopped off at Witch’s Rock (An 875-pound boulder sits in front of this museum, and it’s said that visitors can see the hand print of Moll Dyer on the rock. Dyer was labeled a witch by the townspeople and was driven from her home on one of the coldest nights of the year. Her neighbors burned down her cabin, so she was left to the elements. Dyer was found the next morning, frozen to death and clutching the giant rock. When the townspeople removed her body, the impressions of her knees and hands were left at the scene. Three hundred years later, people report seeing a ghostly apparition floating over the land where she lived. Visitors to the museum report feeling aches and pains when they stand near the rock, and those who have tried to take pictures of it find that their cameras malfunction.)

Google has added a slick new feature to their mapping product. Over 30 major US cities (including DC) now sport a new “Traffic” button that will display congestion, or (hopefully) lack of it, on important routes.

  • Red means bumper-to-bumper gridlock
  • Green means go go go
  • Orange means somewhere in between

I don’t drive, but it would be interesting to hear from anyone out there who has tried this interface and has gotten feedback that actually helped them pick a successful alternate route.

Visited Misti, Neil, Daniel & Emily today with the in laws and BHK – it was fun playing belated Santa. Jason’s Deli is rapidly becoming a huge fave.. I wish we had a local salad bar and soup place as yummy. Bonus was that Ukrops had some veggie-only onion soup on hand, and it was pretty dang awesome as well.

I got a chance to play a few games of laser battle (no relation to my old chestnut of laser attack) with Daniel, and it was quite fun.. I’ll probably see what I can do to add it to our games closet.

Also exchanged travel bugs with Misti – I released one due for Brazil, and received one due for Japan, and another headed to Hawaii’i. The Brazil and Japan join BHK’s Louisville, KY one as part of the Unite for Diabetes Challenge. (The Hawaii’i one is just for funzies.)

Interesting answers to yesterday’s poll.

There are many different variations of Rock, Paper, Scissors which range from simple changes in the names of the objects to increasing the number of players or objects. While interesting, most rule variations suffer from one problem or another, making them less interesting games.Versions of this game are also observed in many different cultures. It is usually known by direct translations of “Rock, Paper, Scissors”although some cultures have slightly different names or even entirely different elements representing the different objects. For example in Japan there is a variation which uses a tiger, a chief and the chief’smother as the three elements (the tiger beating the chief’s mother, the chief beating the tiger and the chief’s mother beating the chief). In Indonesia another version is played with the elements as an elephant, a man and an ant (the elephant crushing the man, the man crushing the ant and ant humorously defeating the elephant by crawling into the animal’sear and making it go insane).[1] The Chinese, not counting Taiwanese, and Koreans use Cloth along with Rock and Scissors, while the Japanese have adopted Paper. Minor variation is also observed in the standard game play.

Nice Job, Mr. Clinton.

This is the first 20 minutes of Bill Clinton’s interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday. In this clip, Wallace asks Clinton why he didn’t do more to capture or kill Osama bin Laden while he was in office. Clinton clearly feels like he has been set up and doesn’t hold back in telling Wallace just how he feels.
