8504 – So, it’s midweek!

autumn

Although this summer is going swimmingly, and there are great things in my immediate future, I’m looking quite forward to autumn. There was a rainstorm on my walk home yesterday, and it was a beautiful thing. Winds whipping cool air around, taking the leaves off of the trees and spraying a collection of raindrops of varying mass and density against my face. There’s something to be said for feeling fat splashes and mist at the same time. I was possessed of an energy I haven’t felt in quite a span, and that was certainly most welcome.

I was reminded a bit of the cool period after hurricane Wilma last year. Post-storm, the cool breezes and only the lightest of rains came – a kindness in an area without power to run air conditioning. Of course, that was in October, rather than August. A time for pumpkins, rather than watermelon. Halloween and Thanksgiving are looking especially spiffy.

I prefer pumpkins. I can think of three that are especially important. A gray one, an orange one, and a freckled one.

“Marrakesh. It sounds like a drink.” – Hank McKenna

“It sure does.” – Dr. Ben McKenna

The Man Who Knew Too Much

I had that film playing in the background last night… forgot how good the movie is. Gave me a bit of homesickness for Butters and Oneeyed, even if I’ve never been to their home. I like this remake more than his version in the 30s.

Moment of Lyric – mp3

8498 – Buddhist monks, when threatened, will form a protective circle. (Just like musk oxen!)

Ken Nordine has a website, where he regularly journals and does audio broadcast. Who knew? I was a huge fan of his voice work back in the 90s.

I can’t say as I’ve ever seen Frog eye/Goat eye contact lenses. Split, rounded pupils would have a fun freak-out value.

Do any toys use clip-in 9 volt batteries these days? It seems like almost everything is rechargeable, AAA or AA, with a few ancient or greedy things that run on C or D cells. I have always thought the little square batteries were more fun to look at and play with. I have a rechargable 9 volt for my TENS unit, but that’s about it… back in the 80s/90s, It seemed like all my walkie talkies and portable radios used 9Vs.

Apparently there are no A or B size batteries.

dragonball - man with a boid

Nothing is more fun on a lazy Saturday evening than watching a Cheesy Martial Arts Movie on the Spanish channel. I’ve been mildly wanting to see this for about a decade or so. Watching it dubbed in Spanish just made it the much more surreal.

dragonball - turtle man and crew

The amount of savings on my electircal bill from closing my shades rather than leaving them open was a whopping $2. I’ll continue through August, just to see if it was a fluke.

8488 – Monday, again!

I’ve got some good thoughts to buoy me through Monday Meeting!

Every day is a new challenge, but I’ve got some good ammo to combat most challenges that come my way lately.

Danny sent me the complete first season of the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman series! (The Pilot Movie, and 13 regular episodes). Very Keen. Apparently Paradise Island is in the Bermuda Triangle, according to the show…I always pictured it in Greece.

Had a nice walkabout yesterday… went to riverfront to check out the place before it gets torn down to make way for condos. Took a few snaps, met up with Tina. We had a little bite to eat at the Italian place, then saw Monster House. I quite enjoyed it, though it was a bit slow at first… and I wasn’t expecting a PG rated thing in that style. Some pretty unexpected turns, and character actions that were rather creepier than an evil house that eats people.

Post movie, we chitty-chatted and got ice cream before it was time to go – getting spoiled.. I just had a cone with Danny last Thursday.

Still haven’t seen Pirates (Movie-time conflict), and putt-putt is being saved for a day when we can get a bigger crew together.

Pictures of construction, graffiti, and etc.

8437 – Monday off, bayyyybeee!

Lately, the weather is proper rainy season fare – warm and humid, dense, moist atmosphere even when the water falls from the sky. All you need for a soothing shower would be a bar of soap and some privacy.

I’ve been feeling like it’s time for a change. Something simple, even like getting that haircut that I dodged a month or so back. As long as I don’t have to use a lot of product, I’d probably be ok with short hair.(after a period of shock adjustment)

Why is it so much more acceptable for a stranger to try and bum a cigarette off of someone else (even if they’re not currently smoking… or even holding a pack of cigs), rather than say, a stick of gum? does the addiction make the beggar more brave, or maybe the social side of smoking is the thing.

Yesterday, I went to breakfast and see superman with Tina – had a nice time, and I think that I enjoyed the movie more the second go. Going to put plans in motion to maybe get Danny and Tina to go see pirates after my journey to the keys.

We visited the Victoria park diner, 17th day open. cash register receipts still read “Miami Subs”. The food was reasonable, but big louie’s is better both in quality and cost. On the ride home, I spoke with an employee – the franchise owners are still the same ones that owned the Miami Subs before it was converted. Given the location, I suspect that they can’t help but succeed. (Unlike the archives cafe… which is closing as of 7/7. The place is already mostly boxed up. To be honest, I’m amazed it lasted as long as it did. The “new location” is selling books on ebay from the garage, it seems.

I lovely time gabbing with bhk on the ride to the theater – I’m envious of the fossil-rich environment where she lives.

Monday’s plan is a good walkabout if it’s not too rainy – otherwise, stay in and clear a few more boxes.

Moment of Lyric – youtube video

8400 – Never Fear, Scotto is here!

The clouds are wispy and fast-moving today.

I cut the dickens out of the sole of my foot yesterday, and got to take a little trip to the urgent care center near my house. Nothing too dramatic… keeping the foot and all toes. No stitches needed, but a bandage will protect a bit. I’m walking on it, so no big whoop. More blood than anything else – I cut it on the drain. That’s been repaired, so I don’t get a repeat.

Danny mentioned Las Vegas for a mini-vacation in July. I’m not a gambler, but there are cool things to do there. Not sure if I want to spend a coupld of hundred bucks on the cheese factor or not, but it could be a lot of fun.

Random Scotto statement – I can’t watch a hospital death scene without thinking of my father’s passing, and that pisses me off. I don’t like my gut punched by trite tv or movie theatrics. He died over sixteen years ago, and I’m still saddened that I won’t get another conversation with him.

I have a lot of memories of him in my life.

I’ve heard it said that the lessons we learn from pain are always the strongest. I don’t mind pain, if I can get it to stop, and it’s there for a reason that I can suss out.

Moment of lyric – (mp3 {and a lot of great stuff from Rubber Soul} found here)

There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

Prairie Home Companion movie is rated PG-13? That’s sort of curious.

the pain
Still only Friday? Oh, the pain… the pain…
Well, the weekend will be here soon.

8394 – Too-oo-uh-oo’s Day. (In the style of Buddy Holly, for no good reason)

Danny visit today. I estimate Japanese food and the Poseidon movie will happen.

Mental Moments of Poetry –

Tit for Tat

I often pass a gracious tree
Whose name I can’t identify,
But still I bow, in courtesy
It waves a bough, in kind reply.

I do not know your name, O tree
(Are you a hemlock or a pine?)
But why should that embarrass me?
Quite probably you don’t know mine.

— Christopher Morley

The Purple Cow

The Purple Cow’s Projected Feast:
Reflections on a Mythic Beast,
Who’s Quite Remarkable, at Least.

I never saw a purple cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I’d rather see than be one.

— Gelett Burgess

Gabbed with Tina for about a zillion years on the phone – topics ranged from Shakespeare, Baroque Music, pet stories, furniture, veggie meatballs, lj, stain removal, life at a not-for-profit & work ability, pomade on bedclothes, the terms ballcap and walkies, patient doughnuts, library fines, but NOT Huey Lewis and the News. Some sort of record for random tangents….time compressed to the vanishing point, and it was a lot of fun, making with the jibba-jabba.

Project at the gig is lining up folks to learn about CSI – $100 for four 1-hour sessions with professionals to go to the org’s coffers. Not a bad idea… law enforcement instructors are a easily obtained resource.. I’ll probably sit in on them, if I can go as a rep. I may actually wear my company shirt to a company function… how weird is that?

I have to start thinking about web and local areas to get folks interested. I’m not too crazy about the Broward and Dade LJer communities, due to the large number of twinks… I’ll have to evaluate ’em again.

Recieved some great tunes yesterday…The Thorns and Josh Rouse. Nice Mellow sound. Thanks, Super Kayaker!

Moment of Lyric – mp3

Under the cold blue stars you would just stroll around the yard
that’s what happens to dreams when the life strains and the child lays in you

When you got old you played guitar in a little town, your favorite bar
just blowing steam now the lights fade and everyone’s paid to see you

So did the farm steal your soul when the cornfields won’t grow
its time to leave, now the heart bleeds and the family leans on you

You were under the cold blue stars in another town your favorite bar
that’s what happens to dreams when the life strains and the child lays in you

Moment of Lyric – (link to copy, right?’s page hosting it)

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, “Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you”

8389 – Saturday. similar feeling as last weekend this time.

Watched Iron Giant last night, for the first time in a few years. Still as excellent as I recalled. While it played on the TV, I unpacked a few of the boxes stowed by the bookcases that needed weeding out. Found a bunch of old Legion Comics which distracted me for a bit while I put ’em in order and put them at the bottom of the linen closet, for the lack of a better temperature-controlled location. Followed up with The Swarm. (An Irwin Allen Sci-fi stinko classic featuring Michael Caine shooting bees from his eyes.)

Cleaning Lady comes by today… after she’s done, I’ll probably go walkabout for a bit, if the weather’s right. I think a walk along the beach might be in order.

Cinnamon toast for breakfast! First time I’ve made it in years… it always reminds me of being a little kid.

Found a number of OTR podcasts… about 8-10 hours of classic stuff every week. Songbird is pretty handy there. Sort of disappointed in Penn Gilette’s show, so I’m almost all NPR, OTR, and Prairie Home Companion… oh, Stomp Tokyo and Marc Maron’s show. Sometimes I listen to them on the ride into/from work, while reading, and I sometimes blank out what I’m listening to.

Walkabout was pleasantly fruitful. I’ve got a touch of color on my face, put in a solid bout of workout, a comfortable, but long10ish mile meander. I need to get some new shoes. Remembered to wear my ballcap today, so the sun didn’t scald me too badly.

8156 – Welcome, February!

GeotargetOdd, considering yesterday’s news, that I took Wilt and the Momster to see The Matador last night (Was going to do Kong again, but a 3 hour movie on a “school night” is a no no for me)…sort of a chaotic film, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone in particular, but I liked it, after a fashion. Maybe a bit too much of some things and not enough of others…. very vague, but if you’ve seen it, you probably know what I mean. About an assassin for hire, not an actual matador. Not quite a comedy, not quite a thriller… great acting by both leads.

May get together with Kev on Saturday for a FP with Tomi if good fortune and a lack of taking call holds. That’d be so very 1986 of us, all together! Tomi’s usually in Finland, and Kev and I are usually so busy! I’ve got to think of what movie to watch… Perhaps Die Hard, in the tradition of one of our first FP’s?

Thank you, dear Shoo! My birthday present got here early, but I was good and didn’t unwrap the gift paper unless she said I could.

And she did. I got the 2-disc Special Edition of King Kong (1933)! Yay!

Much love to all the family Shoo in Shoo-ville! Newt also likes the box quite a lot, too. He’s currently sitting inside, gnawing on a cardboard flap.

Took a lovely late night swim in the pool at about 2am. The water was warmer than the air, which is always nice. I had a brief moment of iguana-fear, which quickly passed after I gave a quick sweep of the area. Very soothing to float on my back, staring at the moon and just thinking and feeling my toes and fingertips wrinkle up a little. Water is still the closest thing to hitting a reduced gravity environment for me… quite peaceful and I could feel a lot of physical tension flow away from my back, legs and shoulders. I was shivering a bit, despite the warm water, and I don’t know what that was…maybe the body unkinking? I may make a habit of nighttime soaks more often.

Hey, look at all the batgirls!

A gazillion of ’em!

Some new designs, some just different styles on the old stuff… pretty nifty lj meme. Some amazingly amateurish, others frighteningly professional.

Take me off the shelf and put me in a plastic bag, because I’m sold!

VS and KTM both submitted resignations this week.. that’s pretty much the entire community relations department. They’ll both be gone before my birthday. I hate to sound greedy, but I really hope this won’t affect my making a long weekend out of Feb 2-5 next month. I wonder how long RR has left before he high-tails it, too?

Moment of Lyric:

My, my the clock in the sky is pounding away
There’s so much to say
A face, a voice, an overdub has no choice
And it cannot rejoice

Wanting to be, to hear and to see
Crying to the sky

But the porpoise is laughing good-bye, good-bye
good-bye, good-bye, good-bye

Clicks, clacks
Riding the backs of giraffes for laughs is alright for a while
The ego sings of castles and kings and things
That go with a life of style

Wanting to feel, to know what is real
Living is a lie

But the porpoise is waiting good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
