More photos’ from yesterday’s tornado! – Chesapeake Beach Storm Damage – Photos – WRC | Washington

Folks here are really excited about it – After Hurricane Andrew, I’m glad it wasn’t as bad as it might’ve been. Big issue here was that it came out of nowhere, in a matter of moments – hurricanes you get a solid warning. THe roof that was blown off may finally allow for the smokey stink to fade from traders. 12 people were hospitalized, but no major injuries that I know of.

Chris and Larry lost some roof flashing, had a cracked window pane, and some broken tree limbs about the place, but thankfully nothing too devastating.

Most fascinating to me is the marble-sized hail that hit us on the way home… I really thought the truck’s windshield (already cracked, from an ancient wound) was going to shatter at one point.

I don’t know why I keep thinking today is Friday.. I’ve got to cut that foolishness out.

BHK hasn’t been feeling very well lately – Allergies, I think. I hope she mends up quickly! She made tasty stuffed peppers for supper last night – Chris joined us, as her house hadn’t cooled back down yet after losing power.

BHK and I may go see The Fall tonight… I also I really want to see Son of Rambow before it leaves the theaters, too. We’ll see how we feel after dinner.

So.. it’s June already! Second day and so far, so good. Maybe we’ll buy a bicycle today!

From ABC News:

A University of Melbourne team has broken new ground, extracting genes from the extinct tasmanian tiger and bringing them back to life in another living creature.

The team put the thylacine DNA into a mouse embryo in what the university’s Dr Andrew Pask says is the first time DNA from an extinct species has been used “to induce a functional response in another living organism.”

The thylacine DNA reproduced in the mouse’s body and showed biological function, reviving hopes that the tiger may one day be successfully cloned.

Speed Racer and (new Pizza Hut a bust – too new and popular to get sit down seats) went to Selby bays subs – got a tasty veggie – they were hammered at 1pm – too nice a day!

I liked Speed Racer. Colorful, bright, and hit every aspect of the show. It went pretty long – 2:30 is a a bit long for a cartoon, but I dug seeing Pops go old-school wrestler on a ninja, and how well Racer X can fistfight from the comfort of inside his vehicle.

0601081609.jpg

If you’re a fan of the old cartoon, I don’t think it’s possible to be disappointed.

After the movie proper was over, BHK and I were digging the credits.. one of the brusha brusha staff was over-exuberant, and tossed my drink out… they replaced it.. but it was mildly peevish to have them get all up in our business while we were still watching the end bit. No after-credits stuff comes up, but there is monkey-shenanigans throughout the top of the end creds.

Adam’s grandfather is in a bad way – he was sent to the hospital last weekend, was looking better on Tuesday, not as good yesterday. I hope he hangs in there, and mends up… at his age and level of health, I suspect he may be about done.

Was a bit sick this morning – nervous about the epidural , maybe… or low blood sugar. No food after 8am, minimal sips of water if needed. Still pretty sore afterward, but I should feel a lot bette rni the next few days.

BHK made Thai for me last night – make my last meal before the fast a good one. Green Curry veggies over rice, with a side of tofu in peanut sauce. The lady knows what I like to eat. After the epidural, we got Mexican – it was good, but I couldn’t finish my plate. Leftovers lasted until about 9pm.

Training computer models to the firing patterns of the neurons in the parts of the brain that control motion, they are able to project the intentions of a monkey to a robotic arm, which follows the will of the animal. The sad thing about the articles is that the beauty of the mathematics used to create and train the models is totally ignored."

NASA is bracing for “seven minutes of terror,” when an unmanned craft landing on Mars may wake a dormant robot army that could rise up to invade and crush our civilization… oh, wait. They’re saying the space ship might tip over. That’s all.

Spent most of the day shopping for a new couch and a new bed – found the bed we wanted at a decent price – we pick it up tomorrow, and our old bed goes to the blue house for storage. We have a new Queen Size pillow top marshmallow (but firm) – feels good at the store – can’t wait to try it at home.

Gaming in my brain –

Next game I want to pick up is Hive. (with the mosquito ) I like the insect theme and bakelite tiles a lot – I’ll have to see if Aardvark can order it for us.

Unlike the US government, Hasbro lets you print out your own Monopoly money. There are PDFs for 1,5,10,20,50,100, and 500 dollar bills.

Good for any money-handling game, really. Witch Trial comes immediately to my mind. (which uses our monopoly money more than monopoly does)

From New Scientist Tech: (or, a better use of a Newt/Pye cam?)

To try and develop a more sophisticated model, the team recorded the responses of 49 individual neurons in a part of a cat’s brain called the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). The LGN receives and processes visual information from the retina, via the optic nerve, before sending it on to the cerebral cortex.

The data made it possible to build a software model of the LGN that can approximate how the neurons would respond to real scenes. The model was tested against scenes recorded from a “catcam” camera attached to a cat’s head.

“We chose the catcam because it was the most natural stimulus we could think of, the closest to what a cat would see when walking around,” Matteo Carandini told New Scientist. Because the catcam footage lacked elements moving independently from the rest of the scene, the researchers also used a scene from Disney’s animated film Tarzan.

The model’s predictions proved to be 80% accurate when shown artificial scenes, but this figure fell to 60% with the natural scenes or the Tarzan movie.

The ultimate goal of the research, still years distant, is to develop an implant that uses visual data to directly stimulate the LGN of blind people whose optic nerve or retina has degenerated from lack of use.

“For these people, a prosthesis in the eye doesn’t help,” Carandini explains. Only people who have recently become blind can benefit from such implants – currently being tested in humans – that stimulate the retina or optic nerve

Work on monkeys last year showed it is possible to stimulate the LGN using electrodes to alter their vision, something previously thought impossible. Software models like that developed by Carandini and colleagues would be vital for an implant to stimulate the right neurons to create a mental impression of vision.

I think tonight is Thai night or is that tomorrow? Or did we decide to go with zucchini? Ah well, it’ll be a winner of a night, no matter what.

Had tasty leftover thai soup for lunch… maybe leftover pizza from last night for dinner? I guess I’ll know once I get home… I imagine my ride’ll be here soon! [edit: had a huge salad for dinner, and rounded it out with the remainder of the Thai soup. Pizza in box for tomorrow!]

Serious cough this morning – pollen? Faded as we left North Beach. [edit: didn’t return when I got back home – woodsmoke, perhaps?]

Watched House and Hell’s Kitchen – we’re about 3 episodes from the end on each. I can’t get over how abusive Ramsey is on that show – I’ve seen him far nicer to other folks, so I’m guessing it’s mostly an act. House wasn’t up to usual snuff… (the sopa opera star one) I guess ever season has to have the weak episode here and again.

Whenever I think of James Garner, I think of three things. (usually in this order)

1. Rockford Files
2. Maverick
3. A Chevy Tahoe Commercial he did a voiceover for:

“Nobody Knows It But Me” written by Patrick O’Leary

The words of the poem are as follows:

There’s a place that I travel
When I want to roam
And nobody knows it but me.

The roads don’t go there
And the signs stay home
And nobody knows it but me.

It’s far far away
And way way afar
It’s over the moon and the sea
And whenever you’re going
that’s wherever you are
And nobody knows it but me.

I love that poem, but if pressed, prefer the Rockford files.

9278 – Wednesday – the letter o appears in this entry.

Everyone on the bus was wearing blue this morning. No reds, golds or oranges… blue, with black or white, in varying shades.

Except me. I had a pair of tan/brown pants, brown shoes, white shirt with a smattering of black, gray, and reddish brown stripes.

Half of me wondered if I got on the right vehicle; the other half wondered why I didn’t get the memo.

I don’t mind – I come home to a colorful crew with BHK at the helm.

It seems that Pye prefers Newtcam, and newt prefers to be on Pyecam. (Newt likes the little window ledge upstairs…Pye likes the bed upstairs. They both seem to duel over the office and living room windows.

Off to Arlington, VA (right near Ballston) for a NetForum Users Group meeting on Friday – pretty much all day long. I wonder if there’s anything BHK and I would like to do in that environment, after the meeting is over? This weekend plans include (in varying degrees of probability, but all of them nifty):

Aardvark
Em’s ballet recital
Artomatic

Those that aren’t hit this weekend, will be hit in the future, to be sure.

9270 – tuesday OH YEAH!

Spent most of the day shuttling around, getting things in order, both at work and off-site. BHK and I made it home about 7:30, after supper at Ledo’s at about 6. – I ended up famished right around 9pm.. .I guess the small veggie calzone didn’t want to stick with me…. especially since I pretty much had been sans food all day.

Oh Yeah!

Thank you, cardboard graffiti artist, for making tuesday extra fun!

The thought was to go to the movies after my midday stuff, but neither BHK nor myself were really up to it – sort of fragged out and just wanted to get home.

Movies:

Despite all the reviews to the contrary, I suspect that I’ll like Hancock more than Iron Man. More than either of those, I want to see Wall-E.

Indy 4 I don’t have high hopes for, but I’m certainly going to see it if possible. I just want it to be better than National Treasure 2.

We still have netflix copies of Cloverfield and No Country for Old Men – Maybe next weekend for those.

Guys like this, *and* the people he sat in front of are two reasons I don’t like going to movies on opening night. If you don’t like what’s going on, either tell the manager, or leave. Those kids had witnesses and there are cameras in most theaters… his behavior was good at least for an assault charge, maybe battery too. (I’ll leave that to my wife’s legal knowledge.) Add to that that he’s far from a minor, and they were… way to lead by example.

Jailbreak 0.4 is out.. looking pretty sharp! I’ll get to it after I finish the Orange Box and Bioshock. (got ’em both for xmas, but I’m having too much fun doing other stuff to goof single player on the ‘pooter these days!

9269 – Monday

Happy Cinco de Mayo! see last year’s entry for more info on the holiday. I hope we have Mexican food for supper!  [edit – BHK made Fajitas!! delicious, but my gut wasn’t happy after a suspect lunch.]

Unrelated to my feelings on Mexican food – After Saturday’s little tummy trouble, BHK and I are considering a “best public potties in SOMD” site, unless something like that is already available. For the record – The Giant supermarket in Lusby has potties that are *very* clean and easy to access.

Hm, a quick google search brought up this. (with this being the Maryland section – no Lusby… I tried to add it and the page hung. I’ll try again from a non-phone browser when I get home from my commute.)

Picture from said commute – It looks more monday-ish than it feels.

I prefer the doodle further below.

I can’t believe I’ve been playing FPS games for over 20 years. My first multi-player LAN party experience was MIDI Maze at Sun Atari ’87, where I gunned Tom Hudson down repeatedly as an orange smiley face. (remembrance due to Wolfenstein 3D being released 16 years ago today.)

First solo FPS on the PC for me was Rise of The Triad – given to me by Kevin, Christmas of ’95, after playing the freeware beforehand, and we played Unreal Tournament in ’99 as the first regularly played FPS LAN game for about a decade after MIDI Maze.

I still have trouble with the translocator, 9 years later.

Never say “hopeless”. My prior back doctor could use a copy of this article. Thankfully, he will be retiring in the next year.

Well, officially back to the goatee – It does feel a lot less warm than the full beard. Last doodle made was on Saturday – I won’t have to draw the jawline for a bit, I guess! playing with the idea of colors mixing through transparencies. I forgot to make the white background transparent for the doodle, though.
