6827 – I don’t smoke cigarettes.

Big Kahuna’s in Alabama all this week, opening the state to local law enforcement.

I may be going out to a late lunch with oneeyed and crew after work.I wonder where a good place to dine might be? Some Options

I woke up *voracious*… I could devour a pile of waffles right now.

Found another subset of NOAA’s site, this time it’s South Florida Specific.

Recently re-discovered the lightning strike site, too – Strikes within the last 3 seconds will appear as a yellow bolt. Older strikes will appear as mostly red and blue dots. The smaller the dots, the older the strike. Red and blue indicates cloud-to-ground strokes. Lavender and purple indicates cloud-to-cloud strokes. The display typically reflects a total of the last 20 minutes activity for any given period.

FEMA has now declared 25 counties in Florida as disaster areas. That’s good news for those victims further inland. Aid will be more readily available for the rebuilding efforts.

Storms rolled through central Florida this afternoon – 2000+ lightening strikes recorded in an hour with more than 3” of rain in spots. According to local news additional rain will coming in off of the gulf in the Punta Gorda & North Port areas now.

They are expecting to put a figure to the fatalities in Lee County sometime tomorrow. One optimistic thing is that many people in the hardest hit areas had left for the summer, so it is possible the number will be lower than expected.

The Bradenton Herald is a very good source for information.

The Red Cross is still requesting monetary contributions and that information can be found HERE. They are still the quickest way to get water, food, shelter and comfort to the victims.

As a petty / karmic redemption side note, I hope that this disaster milks every penny out of the evil, evil, evil Liberty Mutual company.

Photos of Disney World preparations, and post-storm Hurricane Charley. (I’m surprised they didn’t just cover the park with a big plastic dome topped with mouse ears.) Interesting to see all the hanging signs tethered in place. (The last thing anyone needs is to be impaled by a flying bit of Jungle Cruise sign.) He’s got other nifty shots, too… like the construction of Expedition Everest.

I’d like to have this as a Disclaimer all around my property. (for web-cam usage)

It strikes me as funny that people don’t think of Morocco, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Egypt as Oriental. It’s not called the Middle East for nothing, y’know. I wonder if Arabs were *ever* referred to as “Orientals” in the old days, before that term was made politically incorrect? I still Figure myself to be an “Occidental“.. “The Orient” is a much niftier term than “Eastern Lands.”

Interesting portraiture by Mary Ellen Mark. Circus Folk in India, including a Hippo Trainer and little people in monkey suits.

Going over LJ’s stats.

It looks like the male population is dwindling, at less than a third of the total gender specified userbase.

Where I fall out of 4,179,761 accounts

I have –

  • Updated in the last 24 hours (like 268,799 others)
  • Permanent account – something like 0.0003% of the users here (one of 1618)
  • Most popular county – USA (2,035,801)
  • 2nd most popular State – Florida (191,899)
  • Of the very few 35 year olds (7379) (and the numbers dwindle each year!)

6826 – yikes – punta gorda details

I’m amazed at the level of damage in Punta Gorda… very reminiscent of the hurricane Andrew situation before. The thing that gets me is that very few people really took it seriously until it was too late… I think that’s thanks in now small part to TV news blowing *every* weather event totally out of proportion.

A million people without power, and two million people were asked to evacuate. I wonder how much damage will be caused by looting, and how many people are going to get gunshot wounds as a result of walking around in the wrong part of town, now that the weather has passed by.

6824 – The trees are all kept equal by hatchet, axe, and saw.

Took myself out to lunch and a movie yesterday afternoon. AvP was much less than what I expected. Very poorly directed… the last thing I want from an action movie is to be bored. It made me want to go back to play the first person shooter, so maybe that’s what they were going for… more video game sales. The effects were quite good, but that’s about it… I’m guessing they went pg-13 to bring in a younger contingent, and a lot of it could’ve been improved with more visual direction. I should’ve gone to see Bourne, instead.

Lunch was better… cheese trio sammich at Blimpie. I stopped off at the library after, to cool off before making the march home.

Note to self, bus schedules have changed, download new pdfs to palm.

I wonder how long it’ll be before they try for a Land of The Lost movie now? Or maybe Ultraman (in the US – I can’t seem to find any of the old Asian ones on Bittorrent)? I just like scary humanoids with big round eyes, and head-fins. (I already got my Rocketeer movie.)

Pictures from my day’s Walkabout:

6814 – ramble

Just ran a case from Davie, and am now too awake to sleep, but too sleepy to do anything productive. I’ll type here until I’m ready to flop back into bed.

Recent events, thoughts –

Apparently, I’m the designated health care surrogate for my brother, should it turn out that he’s unable to take care of himself due to mental illness, or whatever. Not sure how I feel about that. I don’t foresee it being a problem, really, but I’d have preferred to be asked first, not just notified in passing after the fact.

The thing about keeping a journal online is that I can’t safely post publicly about how I feel about *everything*. If it steps on someone else’s toes, or might be found by someone who shouldn’t see it, or if it’s just none of anyone’s business but my own, I’ll post things privately, my eyes only. Only on very rare of occasions do I post friend’s only stuff (at least these days). I’m pretty much an open book except about things that might hurt someone else’s privacy or my employment.

Things have happened in my family in recent times that try to chip away at my “gentle giant” sense of self. I come back to myself every now and then, and do a bit of a case study. I think I’m still a friendly, nice guy who is pretty approachable if you’re not afraid of giant hippie-looking types.

I have some fundamental flaws that probably will never be repaired. I’m a messy housekeeper. I procrastinate with a lot of things. I have a low tolerance for grossly incompetent people in any service industry. I hate to teach the same person the same thing more than twice. I think that most people are basically nasty, selfish children barely underneath a veneer of slightly more polite behavior and laws enforced by society.

Some good things about me. I do think that everyone is entitled to a little kindness. I feel that some people are able to grow past that selfish child aspect into a kind and giving person. (a lot of people are in the in-between stages.) I think that I set a good example for kids and grownups who are still looking to learn how to behave. I can love unconditionally. I’m more helpful than I am unhelpful. I don’t procrastinate on the important stuff. (Newt’s always well fed, and given lots of love, for example.) I have a job where I don’t have to eat my soul to feed my belly.

Neutral stuff : I’m a social creature, but can function well in a solitary lifestyle. I like to read. I’ve had people tell me that they’re envious of how grounded I am… that I’ve got things together, no matter what happens. Well, I vent regularly, and try not to lose hope. To screech, and flail and grit my teeth… that’s not my style. That’s not to say I’ve never been panicked… but I’ve usually found that it was a result of a false sense of urgency, or misunderstanding, plus panic rarely helps matters in cases where it might be created.

Is it wrong that since the Toronto Star opened up free, searchable archives of 1945 and put them online, that my first beeline was for the comics pages? Popeye, Little Orphan Annie & Invisible Scarlet O’Neil. Pretty spiffy!

Fun with Google searches -Too lazy to search peer to peer? See what’s being hosted and was spidered! via Of course, don’t come crying to me if something breaks your machine or gets you arrested.

METHOD 1

put this string in google search:

  • “parent directory ” /appz/ -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums
  • “parent directory ” DVDRip -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums
  • “parent directory “Xvid -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums
  • “parent directory ” Gamez -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums
  • “parent directory ” MP3 -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums
  • “parent directory ” Name of Singer or album -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums

Notice only the word after the parent directory varies – change it to what you want and you will get a lot of stuff.

METHOD 2

put this string in google search:

  • ?intitle:index.of? mp3

You only need add the name of the song/artist/singer.

Example: ?intitle:index.of? mp3 jackson

METHOD 3

put this string in google search:

  • inurl:microsoft filetype:iso

You can vary the string; ex. microsoft to adobe, iso to zip

When I vanity search Icerocket, it uses a thumbnail of my homepage form about 4 years ago. I also found my old photobucket account still has pictures in it.

Deep Sea Images – Some pretty nifty stock stuff of wrecks and undersea life. (including manatees, for Kell.) You can also search by keyword… helps when sniffing for locations. Lots happening in Pompano, for example. Manta Rays!

A menu is displayed with options to erase data, view data, search data for keywords, change password, or disable the device.

Justice League did a good job on “For The Man Who Has Everything“… I’d like to see them do “Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?” too. The Teen titans had a guest star from two doors over from Bat-Mite and Mxyzptlk’s dimension… too many japanimation nods, not enough story. More fun ideas can be had at the Superman Online Comics site.

In the house above the world, the over-people sit.

There is a man with wings like a bird.

There is a man whose eyes can see through the planet,
and whose fists can wring diamonds from its anthracite.

There is a man who moves so fast that his life is an endless gallery of statues.

In the house above the world, the over-people sit.

And watch.

Two Videos of me talking to Newt this morning.

The second one has my “sinister, yawny just woken up voice / monster-thing”, and the first has my “talk in a high voice because Newt’s a babyhead” thing going on.

Magical Trevor is Stuck in my Head!

The Lyrics –

Everyone loves Magical Trevor
because the tricks that he does are ever so clever
look at him now, disappearing a cow

Where is the cow, hidden right now?

Taking a bow, it’s Magical Trevor,
Everybody’s seen that the trick is clever

Look at him there with his leathery, leathery whip
it’s made of magic
and with a little flip

yeah yeah yeah

the cow is back

yeah yeah yeah

the cow is back

back back

back from his magical journey-yeah

What did you see in the parallel dimension?

Saw beans, lots of beans, lots of beans, lots of beans,

Saw beans, lots of beans, lots of beans, lots of beans yeah, yeah.

A pop hit if I ever heard one.

From the guy that brought you the equally mind-stickable Scampi, Kenya, and that way overplayed Badgers thing. (I sort of dig the Two Towers remix, though.) I first learned about this with the Wesley Willis Merry Christmas ‘toon.

Assorted CoH images just to look back on

6804 – Break out the Ark, it's a cloudburst!

Ah, now I’m happy.

I take great pleasure from tropical rainstorms… even if I get soaked to the bone waiting for a bus, the massive crashes of thunder and the perfect sedative nature of being at home with all this noise outside is perfectly restive.

I’m here, comfortably curled up with a blanket and Newt… the only thing that’d make it better would be having my sweetheart under the covers with me. (and the additional fur-kids, too.)

Counting Newts is even better than counting sheep to fall asleep.

6800 – I’ll be left there on the wall at the store.

Didn’t do much with Danny last night… went to the Ole’ Ole’, got a plate of loaded nachos and a couple of margaritas, and meandered a little while talking about nothing in particular. The evening was interrupted briefly by the big kahuna calling in on my cell phone, and my giving her a quick tutorial on how to use outlook express to send attachments.

We walked over to the Museum of Discovery and Science, where I picked up a couple of trinkets of happiness for assorted folks. A little treatie-wheatie for my sweetie, in particular… Also, I need to get a few other addresses to send stuff.

Random pictures, taken in a circle at riverwalk at about 4:30pm

I’m not really fond of Monday’s week-start review meetings. it takes hours, and isn’t as productive as I’d like. At least I usually get to give my presentation first, and then bail. I have a lot of stuff to get out of the way this morning, to boot.

Strong sweet tooth lately… not sure why I’m craving it so much. It’s not like my body is in need of raspberry sugar for proper functioning.

I have a case of wanderlust, and as soon as I get the new tech fully worked out, I’m certainly going to take a trip. I just have to decide the duration and destinations.

I didn’t know until yesterday that Ray Bradbury has been wheelchair-bound since his stroke in ’99. Or if I did, I forgot that I did.

His short story, A Sound of Thunder has been made into a movie… (previews)

It seems the movie takes the introduction and runs with it, probably not in the direction that I want to see, let alone the message.

Speaking of Movies, I really don’t see how the studios could improve on The Manchurian Candidate. Someone tell me what the new Gulf War version has to do with Manchuria ? (The Original was based on the Korean war… thus the title.)

(the first time I’ve read it since my days at the BBCL) I’ve never seen the movie, but wouldn’t mind checking it out, now that the tale is fresh in my mind.

I, Robot was a fun, predictable, dopey action movie with robots and Will Smith. Exactly what I expected, and it was fine by me (save for the awkward product placement). Afterward, we swung by The Floridian, and gabbed over supper… Danny seemed a little distracted, but that’s understandable.
