8936 – Friday – Friendship Amnesty Day

FRIENDSHIP AMNESTY DAY

The idea is to post a public post on Friday with the words “Friendship Amnesty Day” in the title. The reasoning behind it is that we’ve all had friendships that either blew up, or faded away, and this is a chance, providing everyone is willing to participate, to leave the door open to clear the air and let go of the past.

It doesn’t mean adding everyone you ever knew back, but it does mean getting rid of any bad feelings / regrets, and spreading a little good cheer around the LJ ‘verse. The creator of the meme means livejournal, but I’m going to extend it across the borders of the Internet and beyond. There’s nothing wrong with the concept in any media.

So, with that in mind… peace. I don’t/didn’t have very many people like that in my life, but the door is open, and I’m doing a clean slate.

spotted by BHK at target last night.

BHK went shopping yesterday, and got all kinds of spiffy loot! Orange Iced Tea cups with Witches on ’em, a new casserole pan, some cute shoes, sweaters and a purse, all for a song. My cut were some yummy chocolate goodies – two bars: one made with blood oranges & cinnamon, the other with chili peppers & Hershey chocolate flavored gum. I think it’s time to go on a tour of Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Downside of the gum, or upside if you’re as infantile as I can be at times… the brown bubble gum leads to all kinds of scatological humor.

8833 – Friday –

Dawn rises on a new day. I crashed hard last night and was a clumsy oaf this morning… it seemed like only 7 out of 8 cylinders was firing for the first two hours of wakefulness. BHK was good about taking up my slack, however.

There was a little bit o’ hustle first thing this morning at work – some folks are out due to nascar being in town, and others are heading to the 400th anniversary of Jamestown near Williamsburg . Apparently the Queen of England is there right now, before she’s off to the Kentucky Derby.

Speaking of the Kentucky Derby, BHK and I both are enjoying Ace of Cakes… the pilot episode had them making a cake for the big Maryland horse race. I don’t much care for the people’s personalities, but looking at the local color of the scenery and landmarks is a nifty thing… plus the architecture of both the local buildings and the cakes is pretty fascinating to observe. So far, my favorites are the University of Maryland Terp and the Taj Mahal cakes, though the Scrabble cake was pretty dang neat, too.

I’m slowly but surely turning BHK onto Good Eats with Alton Brown, too. She pointed out that he certainly has a fondness for deep frying – and on that same note, she made some awesome falafel for lunch (with Cathy and Lyn) yesterday. Partially to thank Lyn for the legal help regarding the condo board issues we’ve been having.

Blood donation –

Appointments are recommended and can be made by calling 1-800-GIVE BLOOD or 1-800-448-3256. Or the Chapter Directly 301 934 2066

I need exercise. I want some fresh air. I’d like to do good some works. I want to avoid bending in the middle for the time being, and not get sunburn.

I wouldn’t mind a replay of last weekend… a day with just bhk, and a day with friends and family.

Maybe we can go geocaching this weekend?

I miss George as a radio station; random access of assorted good tunes is a lot better than 24/7 gospel, at least to me. My only complaint about the place was that there was no visible rhyme or reason between songs at all.

Congratulations on Cath555’s engagement! I look forward to hearing how things continue and develop as time goes by.

Tomorrow is Free comic book day, and I want to go get me some. Green alien head, hopefully, if not, someplace local that will shower me with pretty four-color paper comics and toys available just for the asking.

Maybe they’ll have a Zombie lawyer in the loose hero / horrorclix bin.

Quick aside, the heartbeat sensor in the new Volvos both piss me off and make me say keeno! (I’d love to see alternate usage for the thing like “don’t drive angry!” for high heart rates) Remember! A heartbeat sensor won’t protect you from Zombies, Mummies or other undead that are lacking a heartbeat!

Hmm, will it detect ghosts that do the lub-dub noise? Recordings? Beat boxers? I think that bears investigation on my part.

8762 – sunday, sunday

Nice day today… BHK and I initially wanted to make some coffee and sip it on the boardwalk in North Beach, but the wind quickly put the kibosh on that… My two caffeinated crack monkey companions soon decided that perhaps a nice drive through Deale might make for a more comfortable Sunday morning activity. (Thanks to the Love Cube’s swell environmental controls and roomy tour vehicle status, no doubt.)

Peekatures from the drive (the very last is the boardwalk bay view, before we iced over)- some broken down/abandoned housing and barns, a nifty little food joint, etc. the ‘Fabulous brew coffee shop” was a nice little joint to stop and get some scones and a caffeine recharge. Good (bad?) news is that they’re opening another Fabulous Brew about 3 minutes away from our house. Will our tassimo survive? as always, hover for a minor description, or clicken to embiggen.

On the way to dropping Tina off, we noticed a lot of activity at the volunteer fire department. (the semi-decapitated gnome: semi-decapitated gnome at tina's is on Tina’s neighbor’s steps, as it has for a year. Each neighbor is supposed to take turns and pass the gnome off to the next person in line to mow as a bait to get him off the porch, but this neighbor would rather keep a broken lawn ornament than do his part.)

The admission to the dog show was free, but there were all sorts of opportunities to help support the local SPCA, no chains, disabled animals and adoptions… though I confess that the primary allure was wiener dog races (videos to follow once uploaded to google). Oddly, there were belly dancers, as well… but I didn’t grasp the connection between them and animal assists.

8403 – EN on call! yay!

Thanks in no small part to the monkey chow diaries, I think I’ve got a good idea on making an effort to eat better, and to help make the world a better place.

My current solution – I’m going to pay matching funds to a foundation for anytime I eat non-grocery items (and I won’t be spending much more – cutting purchase of said items in half – so I’ll be spending abou tthe same amount). Anything from a vending machine or a restaurant, I’ll be earmarking an equal amount of cash for a charity for feeding (or better, teaching to self-feed) someone else who is hungry.

Here is a list of 263 charities that provide food. Though, I might prefer to support organizations that catalyze sustainable changes, like Engineers Without Borders. (The old feed a man a fish versus teach him to fish thing).

If anyone can recommend a good, reputable charity (where money goes to the cause, not executive payroll) that teaches recovery of land / self-sustainable health to people, please let me know.

I’m going to turn my homepage’s yahoo ads and the paypal charity tip jar to focus on that aspect of helping others, at least until the First of July (I may extend it past that point, too, if I don’t come up with another idea that at least as useful) so, if anyone visiting Newtcam or any other page that has a yahoo ad clicks on it, they can help without spending anything.

Other Projects are Hurricane recovery, Race for Life Cancer Research, and Wigs for Kids – Not to mention the following clickable helpers:

A few sites for positive change – None of them cost a penny but can help to do good works.

The hunger site – free food to the hungry
Breast cancer site – Help to fund free mammograms
Child Health site – Help save young lives for free
Rainforest Site – help to preserve our rainforests
Animal rescue site – Feed an animal in need.

It frequently seems that people want what they cannot have. That’s not a problem, until it turns out that the *only* reason they want it is because they can’t have it. Very silly, especially when they don’t want it anymore once they have it.

Well, Duh, I say to myself. Just be glad that isn’t one of my failings… I’ve got enough on my own.

a bunch o’ quizzies

8331 – silly aim prank bots – “I say, old bean, have you seen my hat?”

I keep getting hit by the aim bot that starts out with “i say, old bean, have you seen my hat?”, usually aim user chewableputty.

An explanation of how the bot works is here.

Check out the google search – it seems to be happening to quite a few people.

The greathatsby bot scans LJ users for AIM screen names then sends two people the same message and relays their replies to each other so each person thinks the other person IMed them out of the blue.

Sort of a new version of the 3-way calling prank. I’ve gotten pings (even when invisible to aim) maybe once a week for the last 6 weeks. a nifty part of the trick is that it auto translates your im name to the bot name when you’re in chat, too. so if you identify yourself as “I’m biglug23” it’ll say to the other side “I’m chewableputty”.

a way around it is to break it up with spaces or some other character – b’i’g’l’u’g’2’3′

During his lifetime, Dr. King sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues. Working alongside individuals of all ages, races and backgrounds, Dr. King encouraged Americans to come together to strengthen communities, alleviate poverty, and acknowledge dignity and respect for all human beings. Service, he realized, was the great equalizer.

On January 16, 2006, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, Americans across the country will celebrate by honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hundreds of thousands of Americans will remember and memorialize Dr. King by participating in service projects in their communities. Together, they will honor King’s legacy of tolerance, peace, and equality by meeting community needs and making the holiday “A day ON, not a day OFF.”

8091 – vortiginous entry

GeotargetRS thinks that I have some big secret plans for the weekend, I think because I let her go on about her weekend plans and whatnot, and then we got to talking about something else. Nope, nothing special planned… just sleeping in and lingering around the neighborhood, doing more walkies if I can. No glamorous binges on booze and loose women, just a nice weekend out and about.

FDLE coming by the office on Monday morning, FBI Tuesday, and who knows what Wednesday will bring? Maybe big brain, ha-ha? I’m glad that HP has been as patient with me as possible.

I was so beat last night that I fell asleep at 8:30… woke up at 4ish am as a result. I suspect my weekend might be a little out of whack as a result. A bit too brisk out for a swim in the pool… maybe after the sun rises.

I find it amazing that my electric bill for the new one bedroom is less than my old studio… the old place must’ve not been very well weather sealed. $70 is almost a third less than what I paid last January. Also, automatic billpay is beautiful. I just get an email a week before it’s paid, so I can update my records, and hey, presto!

Laser pointer is nifty in the early morning fog… the line goes on for a huge distance.

Dopey dreams of work last night…I don’t much like it when the daily mundane starts stepping on areas that usually allow for people being changed into modular string bean / sabre-toothed tiger stereo components. Most of the drama that I was expecting to happen didn’t occur yesterday, so maybe that was why it was pressing on the brain. Next Friday will be considerably different, and I expect the company to have some drastic changes in one way or another by February.

May be getting together with Bro tomorrow, if plans stay on track. I think a beach walk is in order, or maybe a bike trip.

word of the day: fabiform – shaped like a bean

Speaking of words, I never seem to get a good opportunity to use the term “vortex”. (not to mention – vortical, vorticose, vorticular or vortiginous) Like kissing a woman’s hand, it’s either too much, or not enough.

Windows update now has an official security patch for the wmf vulnerability…update your system normally, and you’ll no longer need that patch posted earlier. To delete the old patch, go to the control panel, add/remove programs – It will be in the list of installed programs as “Windows WMFMetafile Vulnerability HotFix”. click on change/remove, and once it’s out, reboot. all done!

Those Yahoo ads are earning about $0.56 a day lately, down from an overall average of about $2.69 a day. (one insane day 12/15 that got nuts threw off the average.. $19.68) .. but most days haven’t broken a dollar. Upside, there has only been one day when *nothing* was earned since I started hosting them. That plus the $50 flat I get each month from my static front page linkies every month makes for a nice charity lump sum base.

The Dan-man and I went out to an all-you-dare-eat buffet for Sushi/Thai/Chinese, and it was actually quite good. Afterward, we swung by Crabby Jacks to solve his caffeine needs and Miranda got a pretty awesome tip ($5 after a bill for $0.69 – the coffee was free and I had a draft) – after we hung out a bit and chitty-chatted. I told him a bit about my beliefs regarding meeting someone for a lifelong commitment at this point (I suspect odds of meeting someone that I have chemistry with, a minimum of emotional baggage, and a mutual appreciation of one another to be very, very, very slim.) Explained to him why Magda wasn’t a viable option, though she and I did have a nice time together. I honestly don’t know if there are any wedding bells in my future, but If I were a betting man, I know that I’d opt for “not likely.” I know good couples are out there… Dave & Cathi / GrayPumpkin & Katt are two of the best examples of two pairings as well-suited for one another for life that I can think of.

In the last decade, I’ve had the following serious relationships:

Lees – 6 months
Eryn – 3 months
April – 4 months
Rachel – 6 months
CEJ – 2ish years, Almost 3 if you count on and off time
D – A bit over a year
Mel – 3 months
Magda – 5 months (9 minus the months where she was in Columbia)

Come to think of it, I don’t have any trouble getting dates… it’s the longevity that needs work. Breakups are fairly even, an assortment of reasons, from a lack of trust to a lack of interest.

Hair-wise, we’ve got a Blond x2, Brown x3, Black x2, and a Redhead
Tattoo-wise – 6 had ink.. some got it while I was with ’em.
Politics/Attitudes – Leftx2, Modx4, Rightx2
Readers – 4 yes, 4 no
eye color – Brown – 5 Hazel -1 Blue – 2
all were fairly chesty

I’ve been proposed to on two different occasions, and I honestly thought I’d end up with CEJ for life… she was the last one that gave me those sorts of feelings.

Looking back, I do pretty well, for a serial monogamist with no vehicle of his own.

Dan got me a few very nice gifts for Christmas…. No Software this year. A used book on dinosaurs, a new copy of Pratchett’s Last Hero, a t-shirt and a zip-up shirt (both too small, unfortunately), a carrying case for a digital camera/palmtop, and some jalepeno peanuts. We tried out the Peking House restauant, but it had a bad vibe, so we went to the one we’re more fond of dining at.

GeotargetChris Yerina, from Gloversville, NY, who some may know from Respectables, O’Sheas, Culture Room, Fetish Factory parties, Club Exit, etc, or maybe as the guitarist for the bands Monkeypaw, No End, 30 Odd Sicks and Kimsagro, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday night.

They are holding a benefit in his honor tomorrow night at Respectables.

They are trying to gather up a few bands to play between 9pm and Midnight.

If you know of a band that’d like to join in honoring Chris, please have them call 754/235-5206.

There is no cover at the door, but donations will be greatly appreciated. All donations will go directly to his family to help cover the unexpected costs of his funeral services.

Starmark had their Holiday party last night. I wonder who the entertainment was? Three years ago it was Jimmy Buffett.

Happy Birthday, Becky, wherever you are!

I’ve lost a lot of interest in Lost at the moment. Maybe when season 2 comes out on dvd, I’ll peek at it again, but it just hasn’t held my interest the last three episodes or so. I suspect it’s suffering from “Twin Peaks” syndrome. What I once considered a 9 of 10, I’m now putting at about a 6. I never cared about Shannon’s character, and really don’t much care about the new group, especially the cliche of the “tiny twerp actress (that’s not a great actress) who is supposed to be a tough badass”. Boring. Alias, Buffy, Rain. Enough already. Rodreguez in Aliens… she’s believable. The island scenery is more lovely in HD, though. I hope that it turns around soon.

Revised plans for today, no gaming – Danny prefers not to go, but I’m unsure why. I guess I’ll find out once he gets here, about 11:30am. Maybe a dip in the pool? He’s bringing a swimsuit and towel in case things are good for it. Maybe a trip to Crabby Jack’s for lunch. I’m not sure that I can make it to respectables late night, or Dave’s early night yet.

7924 –

GeotargetI’d like a comfy linen/cotton blend suit, and a snappy gray fedora. Not sure where that urge for a summer suit in November came from.

I can’t watch TV shows that place in hospitals, at least not around the anniversary of my father’s death or his birthday. I had an extended crying jag last night when I remembered that his birthday is coming up in about 2 weeks. First time I’ve really cried for quite a while. Ultimately cleansing, but think I hurt my side a little bit as a result. Newt was a great comfort to me.

I miss my dad. I miss the way my brother was when he was 12. I think that I get along with my mother better these days than I ever had as a kid.

The office has decided not to pay salaried folks for time away from work due to Hurricane Wilma… I’m going to point them to Hurricane Wilma Disaster Unemployment Assistance. To determine eligibility for Wilma DUA (or standard unemployment benefits), start by contacting the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation (Florida unemployment office) or filing an unemployment claim through same by 11/28/2005. For information about other types of Hurricane Wilma disaster assistance, browse the FEMA and FDEM sites.

I’m safe… I worked every day save for 2, and those two days I gave training and tech walk-through to our rep in Texas. I think that everyone else save for ECN and myself will end up getting docked a little more than week’s pay. (I wonder if the Big Kahuna will cut herself, too?)

Solutions

What can you do to minimize the chances of an on-line exploiter victimizing your child?

  • Communicate, and talk to your child about sexual victimization and potential on-line danger.
  • Spend time with your children on-line. Have them teach you about their favorite on-line destinations.
  • Keep the computer in a common room in the house, not in your child’s bedroom. It is much more difficult for a computer-sex offender to communicate with a child when the computer screen is visible to a parent or another member of the household.
  • Utilize parental controls provided by your service provider and/or blocking software. While electronic chat can be a great place for children to make new friends and discuss various topics of interest, it is also prowled by computer-sex offenders. Use of chat rooms, in particular, should be heavily monitored. While parents should utilize these mechanisms, they should not totally rely on them.
  • Always maintain access to your child’s on-line account and randomly check his/her e-mail. Be aware that your child could be contacted through the U.S. Mail. Be up front with your child about your access and reasons why.
  • Teach your child the responsible use of the resources on-line. There is much more to the on-line experience than chat rooms.
  • Find out what computer safeguards are utilized by your child’s school, the public library, and at the homes of your child’s friends. These are all places, outside your normal supervision where your child could encounter an on-line predator.
  • Understand, even if your child was a willing participant in any form of sexual exploitation, that he/she is not at fault and is the victim. The offender always bears the complete responsibility for his or her actions.

Additional Safeguards

  • Instruct your children to never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone they meet on- line.
  • Instruct your children to never upload (post) pictures of themselves onto the Internet or on-line service to people they do not personally know.
  • Instruct your children to never give out identifying information such as their name, home address, school name, or telephone number.
  • Instruct your children to never download pictures from an unknown source, as there is a good chance there could be sexually explicit images.
  • Instruct your children to never respond to messages or bulletin board postings that are suggestive, obscene, belligerent, or harassing.
  • Instruct your children that whatever they are told on-line may or may not be true.

Further Resources

The FDLE Missing Children Information Clearinghouse

In response to the concern for missing children in Florida, the 1982 Florida Legislature appropriated funds to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for the establishment of the first state Missing Children Information Clearinghouse (MCIC) in the nation. The program provides a liaison between citizens, private organizations and law enforcement officials regarding missing children information.

The MCIC is located within the Division of Criminal Justice Information Services and is a central repository of information regarding missing children. The information is collected and disseminated to assist law enforcement agencies, public and private organizations and the citizens of Florida in locating missing children. The MCIC is utilized as a resource center and information exchange service, and complements the state and federal computerized missing persons files.

As part of the MCIC’s services, a toll-free telephone line (1-888-356-4774) is available twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

The FDLE Sexual Offender Predator Search System

A Florida law, effective 7/1/96, requires the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to maintain an updated list of Registered Sexual Predators in this state after a court has made a written finding designating them as a Sexual Predator as that term is defined by Florida statute.

Chapter 97-299, Laws of Florida, requires certain sex offenders to directly register with law enforcement or to have information compiled by the Department of Corrections, with the information to be provided to FDLE. Florida law makes that information available to the public. This site provides you with public information regarding Sexual Predators and Sex Offenders.
