Went with BHK to visit Amy and her family at a nearby flyball event. The dogs were adorable and seemed to be having a really good time. Strange to see an event with such a wide variety of breeds.

Stumbled across Woodbine (at the juncture of the Patapsco River, the B&O Railroad, and the road that runs north from Lisbon to Winfield, Maryland on Liberty Road (Maryland Route 26) and through to Westminster, Maryland. The original road from Baltimore to Frederick runs just north of Lisbon, following a slight ridge line westward halfway to Woodbine (the road was finally paved in the 1960s). This was the original trail that existed before the National Road was built (the road that runs through Lisbon).

Rebel calvary crossed the Patapsco River at Woodbine and at Hoods Mill, just a few miles eastward on the river and the B&O Railroad scouting the Union Army that was on its way to the Battle of Gettysburg. The main road at that time ran just west of the existing road and up the west side of a creek that runs south and that joins with the Patapsco River just 100 yards west of the existing road. That original road, now partly unused runs north 100 yards from the river and then eastward to join up with the existing road today. There was no bridge at that time, just a ford in the river.

The town straddles the Patapsco River both north (into Carroll County) and South (into Howard County). In the 1920s and 1930s the town had a large canning factory on the Carroll County side of the river . There was another small canning factory, from the turn of the century, run by water power west of Woodbine at the foot of New Port Hill. Remains of the factory still exist and the sluice where water came to run the machinery is still visible in the wooded area below New Port Hill leading north to the dam, no longer existing.

Just north 300 yards and west of the existing road was a wormseed distillery, where wormseed oil was steam-distilled during the 1930s and 1940s; this small factory was later converted into a tomato and corn canning factory.

Had a lovely night last night – BHK made falafel, (including marinated cukes and feta cheese) along with some really good potatoes with dill for TM, the in-laws and me… it was really delicious. Tina seems a little glum over DR’s absence, but he’ll be along fairly soon for vacation. They all left fairly soon after dinner, and we did some light chores hither and yon both before and after our visitors were at the HQ.

We still haven’t watched Borat… I suspect that it’ll get absorbed into us by next midweek, whenever TM can make it over for more than an hour in front of the TV. (And not watch Dresden )

Still getting used to some aspects of married life – seeing someone lurking (i.e. innocently petting Pyewacket in the living room) around the house in the middle of the night while I’m half-asleep, shutting down for the evening. That makes me yelp, which in turn makes her yelp, leading into a low-end feedback loop of startled-ness for a moment. Flipside, she also makes me break into hysterical laughter fairly regularly. (American Idol the night before last, as an example – I have no idea why I was cracking up so much.)

Emergency Preparedness meeting went ok, plans have to be drawn up for notifications, evacuations, and other levels of distress (boil water, etc)

After the meeting, I took a little walk by the store, an got some of those St. Patty’s Day Irish “Potato” candies for BHK (coconut cream rolled in cinnamon – the candy, not Bhk)… dang yummy (both BHK and the candy)! (not these that missv pointed me to, but dang tasty, nonetheless)

We returned late, and missed going to see 300 with chrishaas and cath555 – maybe next go ’round!

Birdwatching / dinner with the In-laws (Bhk made a ploy for them to get Tigger adopted – if they don’t take him, we’ll very likely integrate him here with us.)

Been hearing good things about the revamp of Star Fleet Battles called Federation Commander – it sounds like it can be played by both normal humans as well as rule-monkey hardcore gamers. I think that I’ll work BHK into it after she gets over the Pirates addiction. (Free Sample Game here as a pdf from the homepage) I’m more likely to get the Romulan one first… it has Gorn Ships, too, even though Klingons are plenty keen.

BHK and I spent most of our waking day with the in-laws… What I thought would be a quick-ish trip to get some plywood became a pleasant all-day affair.

Firstly, we visited our snowman, now just a stick and bit of cork on the dock, since it’s 63 degrees outside.

It was a nice day on the bay

Later we went to Leonardtown and stopped off at Witch’s Rock (An 875-pound boulder sits in front of this museum, and it’s said that visitors can see the hand print of Moll Dyer on the rock. Dyer was labeled a witch by the townspeople and was driven from her home on one of the coldest nights of the year. Her neighbors burned down her cabin, so she was left to the elements. Dyer was found the next morning, frozen to death and clutching the giant rock. When the townspeople removed her body, the impressions of her knees and hands were left at the scene. Three hundred years later, people report seeing a ghostly apparition floating over the land where she lived. Visitors to the museum report feeling aches and pains when they stand near the rock, and those who have tried to take pictures of it find that their cameras malfunction.)

Google has added a slick new feature to their mapping product. Over 30 major US cities (including DC) now sport a new “Traffic” button that will display congestion, or (hopefully) lack of it, on important routes.

  • Red means bumper-to-bumper gridlock
  • Green means go go go
  • Orange means somewhere in between

I don’t drive, but it would be interesting to hear from anyone out there who has tried this interface and has gotten feedback that actually helped them pick a successful alternate route.

Still not getting all of my responses via email from LJ – I hope nobody finds my tardy replies rude.

Took a trip with BHK to Bowie yesterday, and visited the thrift store near Andrews Air force base… awesome finds. We got a few boardgames (with all the parts) including a lord of the rings risk game that was at the comic store we went to afterward for $45. (we paid $1.61), (also got Pente for under $2, a 1000 piece puzzle, never opened for about $2, too). Had a little lunch at California tortilla, and got a call to come in for an interview on Monday with the County. Hopefully, it’ll snatch me up and install me comfortably in a speedy fashion if it’s the gig for me. After the lunch, a quick step into a local bakery for a macaroon for dessert, and then the aforementioned comic book store. Picked up 2 packs of pirates (viking set) – BHK got a helmet! we just need a shield, an axe, and some other token for a free raider pack) Closed out the day with a trip to BJs (like a Costco) for basic supplies. We now have plenty of liquid refreshment and kitty food.

8755 – Monday, once again

BHK is out taking care of Tina’s kitties, so I’m home doing online research. Taking a little breather. (Her cats make my eyes puffy… not sure why I can’t cope with them as easily as Newt and Pye)

Larry wants to train me to play bass guitar… I’ve been fooling around a very little bit with the ukulele, which is a hoot.

Note – cool named people in my neighborhood-type region.

Mail Carrier – Candy Thorn (extra awesome, because I have a christmas card from her.)
Plumber – Joe Magnolia.

I forget if I mentioned them before. Both names are awesome.

Good preliminary news from CodeRED – Dave put me on to some good leads for a gig or 121. I’ll know midday Monday.

BHK out with Tina for a gal’s day – pedicures and Mexican food. I’m glad that Tina’s getting out and about… the winter gloomiest seems to have descended on her a smidgen. I’ll wager some time with BHK will brighten her day. [edit: They picked me up to get mexican food! Hooray! er, Ole’!

Highlight of the day was ending it with a picnic in the loft with bhk – cheese, crackers, seltzer and vegetarian pepperoni while watching stuff on the tivo was the perfect end to the evening.
(Ugly Betty, The Office, My Name is Earl)

I love it in the loft… it’s sort of a little tree house that we can run to with the kitties and just curl up in a bubble of extra comfort.

An incomplete list of Interests added or revitalized since I’ve moved north –

  • seltzer water (flavored, sometimes)
  • Getting together with family
  • School events
  • Neighborhood Committees (especially for emergency preparedness and regional wifi)

1. How many days have you been married? 106! It’s gone by like a blur, too.

2. Do you like dogs and would Newt allow you to ever have one? I do like dogs, and I’d wager Newt wouldn’t mind one too much after a little adjustment period. However, dogs are a lot more responsibility than cats… walking, more regular bathing, etc… I think that I’d prefer to visit a puppy more than have one.

3. If a movie of your life were made, who would play you? Heck if I know. I’ve been through a lot of physical and behavioral changes over the years. Someone who can do the “giant guy” thing without being too ridiculous. John Goodman, maybe?

4. What are your top three favorite songs at the moment?

  1. This Will be our year – The Zombies
  2. I’m Alive – ELO
  3. Powerhouse – Carl Stalling

5. What do you wish you had more time to do? Everything! I’ve been enjoying virtually every minute!

via eryx_uk

1. If you were to gain super powers, would you honestly be a hero or a villain? I think I’d be a hero, but I’d probably use my abilities for personal gain here and there. (or at least laughs) I like to help people and do what’s right, for the most part.

2. Who would star as you in a movie of your life? Dang it… I just got this question – see #3 from chandra

3. Zombie apocalypse or return of the Great Old Ones? Zombie apocalypse, please… I’d like a war that can be won!

4. If you wrote the autobiography of your life, what would you call the book? I’m unsure… “Immaculate Misconception” maybe? “Don’t Sweat the Petty Things, and Don’t Pet the Sweaty Things?”

I’d probably swipe a line from Bill Hicks… It’s all just a ride

5. If you were a character from a live-action TV show, who would you be? Not sure.. maybe a bit of Jim Halpert from The Office (except that I moved to Maryland to be with the one I love – no triangles or questions there.)

IF you like, leave a comment saying “interview me,” and I’ll ask you five questions, the answers to which you will post on YOUR livejournal.

Had a lovely Birthday yesterday. BHK had a party for me, and we had a goodly sized gang over… Cathy, Tina, The In-Laws, Jimmy, and Adam for Baked Ziti, lemon cupcakes (with raspberries), yellow b’day cake with chocolate frosting, maple cookies, mint oreos, all manner of mixed nuts and veggies for snacking. Oh, and M&M’s.

We had a nice time… chitty chattiing while the teens played Destroy all humans and SSX Tricky. Newt and Pye were polite little boys, too…social but not beggars or meanies. We caught up on some TiVo’d stuff when the tube wasn’t monopolized by any other activity.

EM and Buga wished me a voice mail happy b’day in the early AM, and Emily called back later and sang Happy B’day to me quite nicely.

I hope my wish comes true on the blown-out candles… Adam buttered my nose *again* (in addition to BHK’s two hits) right after extinguishing them. I really don’t have any demands, just requests… I really have more than I could possibly have hoped for already.

Loot breakdown – Quite a nice haul for the b’day!

Rec’d (in no particular order): –

  • ~$400 in checks and cash (Momster and In-Laws), plus $50 target card [maybe to put to a Wii?] (Tina), $25 Friday’s card (Cathy)
  • A great guide to Chesapeake Bay wildlife and terrain, & a Plastic Otter, a birthday party with cake and good friends, pancakes and omelet for breakfast and a ton of cleanup / prep (BHK)
  • A Glass Paperweight blown to look like a Jellyfish – must be seen to really be appreciated. (In-laws)
  • Ceramic Tile of Frog & Child – (Danny)
  • PS2 Loaner w/ grand theft auto, spy2 and a car race game (Jimmy)
  • Many lovely lj and e-wishes, a few very nice paper cards.

Use the first letter of your first name and fill out the following. Its harder than you think.

Happy Birthday, kat78731! (and one year of journaling, too!)

Moved some loot over to the brown house, and did a bit of cleaning there, got a nibble from ned.org for a possible gig – we’ll see how that goes.

Saw “Dead and Breakfast” … Interesting to see Oz Perkins, but it didn’t jingle my bells so much. The commentary was more interesting than the movie itself… sounds like they had a good time making it.

What Fantasy Archetype Are you?

The Seasoned Veteran Friend
You are the Seasoned Veteran Friend! You resemble Aragorn (Lord of The Rings), Merlin (Arthurian Legend), Han Solo (Star Wars), The Marquis (Neverwhere), Sirius Black (Harry Potter) and Chase (Wizard’s First Rule). You are exceedingly loyal, tricky and hardy. You regularly pull the Unlikely Hero, Mentor and Pillor-of-Strength Love Interest out of trouble and into safety. Beware The Traitor, who will make your job intensely difficult. And don’t coddle the Unlikely Hero too much, he has to learn how to fend for himself. Anyway, everyone admires you and your resourcefulness / reliability – good going!

Sweetie was digging all kinds of Vermont yesterday – Teddy bear factory, Mount Equinox, *pancakes*, lake champlain, maple everywhere from leaves to syrup! I wish I could be along for the ride, but I’d be a coughy-yucko addition this time, anyhow. We’re making plans to go again over the summer, maybe with Chris, Larry and Tina.

Chest / Nasal congestion was at its worst last night, but as dawn broke, I believe so did the fever. Cough is better and nose isn’t running so much. Slept most of the day away yesterday, and plan on doing the same today, in the hopes that I’ll be good to go back to work on Monday. Making lots of soup and garlic toast to keep fluids up and the more vampiric elements away while I doze on the futon, watching old movies on DVD, and swigging gallons of water.

from yahoo answers, a solution – Most spiders inject a digestive fluid into their prey and as a consequence, consume most of their meals as a liquid diet with little or no solids being ingested.

What very little gas is produced in their digestive tract seems to diffuse out of the alimentary canal without “flatulence.”
