Mapping the World from the Star City: The Unexpected Global Connections of Roanoke, Virginia

There’s a certain magic to the Roanoke Star. If you have ever stood up on Mill Mountain at dusk, watching that neon beacon hum against the Blue Ridge sky, you get this overwhelming sense of place. It feels deeply rooted, Appalachian, and local.

If you pull back the lens a bit, you realize this valley is not just looking inward. It has been quietly whispering to the rest of the planet for decades.

Roanoke has seven official sister cities, an eclectic, continent-spanning network managed by Roanoke Valley Sister Cities, Inc. (RVSCI) that links a railroad city in Virginia to communities in Brazil, Kenya, China, Poland, Russia, France, and South Korea.

A 60-Year Global Thread

The whole thing started back in 1964 in Wonju, South Korea. Back then, Roanoke was forging grassroots bonds with South Korea just a decade after the Korean War, kicking off a tradition of cultural exchanges that eventually brought us the local Korean Festival Day events.

From there, the web just kept expanding, driven by people who wanted to build bridges instead of walls:

  • Kisumu, Kenya (1976): This connection has leaned heavily into mutual aid, from school infrastructure projects to vital community relief funds over the years.
  • Pskov, Russia (1992): Born right at the end of the Cold War, this relationship turned historical municipal delegations into a way to find common ground through shared history.
  • Florianópolis, Brazil (1995): Moving from the mountains to a literal island city known for its beaches and tech culture, bringing everything from virtual student collaborations to orphanage aid initiatives.
  • Opole, Poland (1995): A bond deeply rooted in the universal language of music, punctuated over the years by high-profile pianist competitions and polka celebrations.
  • Lijiang, China (1996): Bridging the Blue Ridge with the ancient canals and mountains of Yunnan province through bilateral artist residencies and local cultural showcases.
  • Saint-Lô, France (1998): A connection built on profound historical ties, fostering international student internships and milestone anniversary celebrations.

Why Grassroots Diplomacy Matters

It’s easy to dismiss “sister cities” as a legacy concept from a bygone era of municipal handshakes. But in a world that often feels increasingly fractured, there is something incredibly comforting about the fact that medical students from across the globe are coming through pipelines at Virginia Tech Carilion because of these decades-old pacts.

You see it when the annual Local Colors festival takes over the city, or when the Young Artists showcase exhibits art made by kids thousands of miles away who are staring up at their own version of a mountain peak.

It turns out that the view from Star City is not just of the valley below, but a window to the entire world.

## scottobear: backyard zoo & grotto musings

sometimes the smallest windows into the world are the ones that linger the longest. the **scottobear youtube channel** is one of those windows. gregory scott von berg — better known online as scottobear — calls himself an *author / blogger / coder / friendly dude. just this guy, you know?* it fits.

### backyard zoo
most of the channel is made up of short glimpses of the neighbors we don’t always notice. deer padding through the grass. skunks toddling in at dusk. chipmunks darting in and out of view. on a recent video, a monarch butterfly unfolded its wings for the first time, caught in quiet close-up.

a few recent favorites:

– [deer and chipmunk 8-28-2025](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UASUmtxevGs)
– [monarch hatching august 28 2025](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeaC7_pEPLU)

there’s nothing overproduced here, no polish. just the ordinary magic of nature slipping into view, the kind you’d catch if you left a trail cam running in your own yard.

### the grotto
alongside the videos, there’s a journal at [svonberg.org](https://svonberg.org), affectionately called **the scotto grotto**. it’s been running since 2000, which means there’s an entire archive of wandering thoughts, small joys, odd links, and philosophical asides.

the **about page** greets you with a smile: *gregory scott von berg – friendly bear. will not maul you. probably.* (ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ)

the **contract** encourages readers to take things lightly, to let ideas sit in the “maybe” pile before calling them true or false.

entries can be whimsical or weighty, sometimes both at once. in one, he imagines *if i were a tree, i’d be a redwood. if i were a book, i’d be dandelion wine.*

### why peek in
taken together, the youtube clips and grotto pages paint a picture of someone who notices things. the soft shuffle of skunk paws at night. the play of light in memory. the shape of a thought trying to form.

it’s not about being impressive. it’s about being present.

drop by, if you’d like. watch the deer, read the words, take a moment. there’s a gentle kind of company here.
