8437 – Monday off, bayyyybeee!

Lately, the weather is proper rainy season fare – warm and humid, dense, moist atmosphere even when the water falls from the sky. All you need for a soothing shower would be a bar of soap and some privacy.

I’ve been feeling like it’s time for a change. Something simple, even like getting that haircut that I dodged a month or so back. As long as I don’t have to use a lot of product, I’d probably be ok with short hair.(after a period of shock adjustment)

Why is it so much more acceptable for a stranger to try and bum a cigarette off of someone else (even if they’re not currently smoking… or even holding a pack of cigs), rather than say, a stick of gum? does the addiction make the beggar more brave, or maybe the social side of smoking is the thing.

Yesterday, I went to breakfast and see superman with Tina – had a nice time, and I think that I enjoyed the movie more the second go. Going to put plans in motion to maybe get Danny and Tina to go see pirates after my journey to the keys.

We visited the Victoria park diner, 17th day open. cash register receipts still read “Miami Subs”. The food was reasonable, but big louie’s is better both in quality and cost. On the ride home, I spoke with an employee – the franchise owners are still the same ones that owned the Miami Subs before it was converted. Given the location, I suspect that they can’t help but succeed. (Unlike the archives cafe… which is closing as of 7/7. The place is already mostly boxed up. To be honest, I’m amazed it lasted as long as it did. The “new location” is selling books on ebay from the garage, it seems.

I lovely time gabbing with bhk on the ride to the theater – I’m envious of the fossil-rich environment where she lives.

Monday’s plan is a good walkabout if it’s not too rainy – otherwise, stay in and clear a few more boxes.

8428 – More Links, less thinks.

I’ve been feeling a rather blah mood underneath my basic mostly chipper vibe for a little while now. I’ve got a lot of good things going in my life, but still feel a bit of malaise. I think it’s just a combination of the time of the year, general stresses and the like.

I get cheered up quickly when I think of good people I know…LJ folks, not to mention phone calls or hanging out with Danny really energize me and return my thoughts to an even keel. (Usually… sometimes Danny and I commiserate to a point of being mutually cranky…or at least mutually tired.)

Coworkers are a mixed bunch… GG and TD are cool, but the higher much-a-mucks have been really stressed lately, and that’s contagious. Nobody’s really given me any direct guff, but lots of guff “near me”. I have to remind myself to just let it go, and not feed into that mentality.

I’ve got 7 vacation days left to use before 8/25. Not sure what I’m going to do with that, but I know at least part will be sent going up to Virginia, to relax and enjoy myself. (Staying at the crash pad near Mom and Wilt.) Hopefully, a little sidebar to the Keys could happen, too.

I feel good that I’ve raised enough money (between my junk-food fund, now at about $70, plus the kindly donations of folks who click on my webpage ads at about another $100, and outright paypal donations of about $25) to do the bees option, Trees, and chicks a couple of times over. Unless I find an even better charity, that’ll be where the funds go at the end of this month.

See, I feel less bleh, even just typing about making an improvement, and thinking about good folks in my life. Needless to say, Newt is a fine calming and cheer-bringing medicine, too. Thinking about it, I only lapse to humbug when I forget about all the spiffies.

An unknown object has dropped from the sky in a remote village of Tsurma, Kiyawa local government area of Jigawa State. The object labelled “Adolphus 12” carried the French national flag that was covered with an 8 inch polytene bag attached with electronic gadgets, telephone numbers of France and Benin Republic. Eyewitness account told Vanguard that the strange object dropped in the village around 5.00 pm local time after a slight rainfall, which caused apprehension and tension among inhabitants. The eyewitness account stated that the object which appeared to be remote controlled from an unknown centre attempted to take off again before it was tied down by the villagers who subsequently alerted the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Muhammadu Nuhu Sanusi. Vanguard reports that the object that was about the size of a 2,000-litre water tank has an inscription that says “whoever finds it should call the numbers attached, this is not dangerous, and it is a scientific experiment.”

The object also has an antenna, four aerial wires, and a transmitter that looks like a satellite transmission mechanism. Vanguard further reports that the sleepy village was to turned to a Mecca by the news of the strange object as crowd estimated at about 10,000 trooped there to catch a glimpse of the object. Following the development, the Police authority in Dutse sent a team of expert from Bomb Disposal Unit to ascertain the true picture of the object. Briefing newsmen on the incident, the Jigawa Police Public Relation Officer, ASP, Ejike Nwakalor, confirmed that preliminary investigations indicate that the object is a safe scientific gadget with no destructive element, but could not say if it was an espionage object.

Moment of Lyric – (Youtube is my hero, yet again)

Very superstitious, writing’s on the wall,
Very superstitious, ladders bout’ to fall,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin’ glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past.

oo When you believe in things that you don’t understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain’t the way

Very superstitious, wash your face and hands,
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can,
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin’ strong,
You don’t wanna save me, sad is my song.

When you believe in things that you don’t understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain’t the way, yeh, yeh.

Very superstitious, nothin’ more to say,
Very superstitious, the devil’s on his way,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin’ glass,
Seven years of bad luck, good things in your past

When you believe in things that you don’t understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain’t the way, no, no, no

8422 – Sunday morning… after a solid night’s sleep

Woke up on Saturday with a slight pinch in my back… must’ve slept a little funny the night prior… a hot shower and some stretching took care of the bulk of the problem in fairly short order.

Had a lovely day meandering about, looking for proper goodies to put in the apartment, sniffing at teak and rattan-type stuff. Saw a few things that had some potential, and a truly grotesque table that was also a drum made from zebra skin (and legs made from the hooves) which will give the more sensitive folk nightmares for weeks.

As always, we got a lot of good gab-time in, and I always enjoy a day’s worth of social-time.

After doing some legwork, we swung by Tijuana Taxi, and the food was jim-dandy. The place was basically a Mexican version of Crabby Jack’s – with better food. I’ll certainly be back. (I’ve got 2 additional good reasons to swing by there, it’s near both Danny’s house and Tina’s.) Since the refried beans were made with lard, I had the chile-cheese smashed potatoes, and they were tasty, though it took a moment to get used to the idea of mashed potatoes with a south of the border flair. I think I’ll have to get something a little lighter next time, because the veggie Chimichanga was just too much after an appetizer.

When we finished, I took the BCT home… route 2 to the West Terminal, Route 22 to Central, and Route 10 right on home. I ate so much, I was *still* feeling a bit overfed 2 hours later.

The bus ride was nice, too… the rain started to pound down, coming in sheets to the point where I couldn’t see more than 25 feet in any direction. Thankfully, the terminals are well covered against the elements. (most street stops aren’t so blessed.) By the time I got home, the streets were clean, but the skies had fairly dried up, for the final walking-leg home.

8418 – Just Thursday? Not Friday?

Cinnamon Life cereal mixed into blueberry yogurt isn’t as good as I thought it might be… but I was out of rice milk. note to self – get more rice milk.

Nice to hear from Mandy last night – it was good to get few things ironed out, or at least brought into clearer focus.

Dan and I may hang out today… if we’re both not totally tuckered out like Monday. I don’t think I’m going to be in the mood to hear Al Gore grouse about the weather.

Tina and I are shooting for a thrifting trip on Saturday… maybe find a good table or such for the apartment.

No Word from Bro lately. I’m assuming no news is good news.

8412 – Sundee-fundee

Newt wasn’t the most friendly host yesterday… I suspect it was a combo of smoke and/or illness stress that he was picking up from Tina. We had a nice time watching Monsters, Inc and a couple of Eddie Izzard concerts. Much (perhaps too much) Italian food was consumed, and I think a good time was had by all. The eggplant and garlic pizza is even better as a breakfast food this morning.

Some thoughts came up for a decor style for the apartment… maybe a tiki bachelor pad? If it’s possible to get that look with sturdy, comfy furniture, I’m all for it! The tiki-retro look is a pretty keen one.

The Mango Festival’s music was widely varied… from the amazing to Muzak-level artists played too loudly. I’m going to swing back by later today… many people are there having a grand time, so why not Scotto?

I’ve just switched the phones over to EN from ECN… so I think that maybe after a little morning nap, I’ll take a trek outside, if the skies stay clear.

through 9 am…isolated showers and a few thunderstorms will continue to affect the waters off the broward and Miami-Dade coast. only a few light showers will move onshore to affect the fort Lauderdale and Miami metro areas…though most areas will remain dry. the showers will move west northwest at 10 mph.

Danny contacted me earlier – wants to get together once or twice in the week ahead. (Last week was quite busy for him, and he was unable to comfortably do anything.) Maybe we can catch An Inconvenient Truth{website has some sound}. I’m interested in seeing how well it makes a case.

Side note, websites with flash opening pages / purely flash navbars are a bad idea… especially with sound. At best, it limits the size of your audience (if there are no alternate accessibility options added) and at the worst, it’s an annoying bombardment on the eyes and ears that also damages system security.

KIGALI (Reuters) – Twelve baby gorillas were given names by Western officials on Saturday in a ceremony aimed at attracting more foreign tourists to the tiny central African nation.

Dubbed “the land of a thousand hills”, Rwanda is home to nearly 400 mountain gorillas, one of the world’s most endangered species, which attracted over half of the country’s 22,000 tourists in 2005.

Tourism officials face an uphill battle to lure visitors to Rwanda, where around 800,000 people were massacred in the 1994 civil war.

Representatives from the United States, Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands — where most of Rwanda’s tourists come from — participated in the baby gorillas naming ceremony, normally reserved for newborn children.

The UK ambassador to Rwanda Jeremy Macadie called one of the gorillas “Big Ben” after London’s famous landmark.

“Like the way ‘Big Ben’ is a major tourist spot in London, this young baby gorilla will be a center attraction for tourist to this beautiful nation,” Macadie said.

Rwanda earned over $25 million (14 million pounds) from the tourism sector in 2005 but hopes to make close to $100 million by 2010.

The first public naming ceremony was held last year when 30 baby gorillas were given local names.

Conservationists and researchers have traditionally named the gorillas they track using the patterns formed by wrinkles on the primate’s faces as identifiers.

A 1988 film, “Gorillas in the Mist”, based on the work of primate researcher Dian Fossey, who studied the animals in the 1960s, has put the tiny nation on the world map.

8299 – It’s good Friday!

Spent some time with Tina and her crew over at Murphy’s. She was showing off her new car, and is probably going to quit Murph’s and just stay with her day gig, now that the car’s bought.

Getting together with Danny after work… still don’t know what we’re doing. I’m fairly surprised he’s not going to some sort of services.

Here are some friends who invite you into their [web] homes to enjoy records with them. Let’s go for a visit! These recordings are typically old rarities that have not been reissued on CD format.
