9243 – Thursdsay

Presents sent in the mail, when taxes were launched on Tuesday – Eryx’s Christmas Prezzie is only about 4 months late! Ah well, we got it sent out.. .and Danny’s treat will get to him shortly too. hopefully the loot will brighten their days.

Sending good thoughts to all friends in the dumps, too. If you’re not feeling so hot… cheery thoughts to you.

I’m tempted to get BHK and / or Chris Pink T-shirts that read “HYPERBOLE IS THE BEST THING EVER!”

BHK made tasty, tasty meatball-type substance in bbq sauce, with sides of garlic-y yum broccoli.

The Tiki Bar in Solomons Island will be opening this weekend for 2008. I guess pope traffic wasn’t enough! I guess we’ll stick to less congested realms… maybe we can hit the eastern shore and lurk around the marine museum after my shots on Saturday.

Maybe check out some local farmers markets? (now that it’s season.. thanks for the hint, DCist!)

I just remembered to look this up – Sarcastic vs Sardonic

sarcastic = a cutting or ironic remark
sardonic = scornful or mocking

Trees– Vandalised trees reoriented, creating new landscapes and giving the trees a new reality.

Speaking of DCist – want to see the pope’s snappy red shoes ? ( I also dig the “We Love Our German Shepherd” sign.)

I didn’t realise that the rerelease of Tally Hall’s album has a few new tracks on it – I’ll have to see if I can chase down Mucka Blucka and Dream as MP3s, or snag ’em from Itunes.

[edit – THANK YOU for the drop of the music! :D]

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) – Two 19th century rhino horns stolen from a South African museum could be deadly if sold as a popular aphrodisiac because they are drenched in poison, a museum official said on Monday.

The “priceless” horns were snatched from a display at the historic mammal gallery in Cape Town on Saturday evening, said Jatti Bredekamp, chief executive of Iziko Museums.

“Unknowingly, the thieves have exposed themselves to more than the danger of arrest and prosecution,” Bredekamp said in a statement.

“Before the mid-twentieth century, taxidermy mounts were prepared by being soaked in arsenic and preserved from insect infestation through regular applications of DDT, both highly toxic poisons that retain their toxicity over time,” he said.

Bredekamp said the horns were deliberately targeted in a carefully planned robbery, and might be destined for Asia, where ground rhino horns are a prized aphrodisiac.

“This could have unforeseen consequences,” he said.

Rhino populations have fallen dramatically over the last few decades as poaching decimated the animals across Africa.

Bredekamp said museums worldwide were being targeted by organized crime to help supply lucrative markets with a wide range of artifacts. After a previous robbery attempt, South African museum officials removed several other specimens of rhino horn from public display, he said.

9237 – Sunday

I forgot to mention what we did after getting my allergy shots yesterday! We stopped off at Giant, grabbed some rolls, cheese, mustard and turkey (last one just for BHK), then toddled over to Dunkirk District Park. Pretty cool place – has a nice skate ramp, lots of picnic tables, wooded areas, fields for baseball, basketball, tennis and lacrosse. I get the feeling that as it warms up, it’ll be the kids place to be.

We polished off our sammiches, and got back in the car just in time to beat the rain – it was still coming down pretty hard when we picked up our rosebushes – They look like bundles of dirty stick for now, but just wait a month… they’ll be in the ground by May 1… after the worst chance of another cold snap has passed.

Went to Sneade’s for some more seeding trays, a springtime flag for our pole (it’s cute – a beehive – “home is where my honey is” I need to check permissions for putting in a hive of my own out back this year), and a few grilly-items. Saw Larry there, and invited him and Chris over to do some grilling on Sunday… he reminded us that the United States Navy Band was playing – for some reason, we thought it was Sunday night… so we headed home, had a little nap, got cleaned up, and enjoyed some note-perfect music. It was a band, not an orchestra – BHK was missing the strings section, but made up for it by enjoying the percussion and giggling at the high cheese factor of the announcer / vocalist’s styling of Man of La Mancha.

The concert was only an hour long – we picked up Chris (who wasn’t interested in attending), and all headed to Thursday’s. It was quite good.

Anyhow – We did chores and stayed close to home today. BHK worked on the yard, while I got us caught up with last minute Taxes (That’s why Chris didn’t attend – running last minute scenarios.) My first year of filing jointly as a married sort of fellow – a bit different than filing alone. Lots of deductions this year – health care, homestead, school loan interest… I guess I’m a grownup after all. Good thing is that we’re getting some going back, not to mention the “gimme” from the govt that everyone’s getting.

We’ll sock some of it away, put some towards furniture, I suspect – a new mattress, or upholstering the coming couch, maybe?

BHK beat me at Hacienda again, but it was dang close. If I had one more turn, I might’ve beaten her. Alas, I did not! Still, it was a good game, and I think we had a lot of fun playing.

Rules of thumb – get as many markets as you can, as fast as you can! Don’t bother saving money… the three turn limit cuts what you can spend pretty hard.

I suspect I’ll sneak in a game of Wishes Were Fishes next week. Failing that – maybe if we go do paint your own pottery, I’ll make us a set of Tally-Ho! (I discovered it at Yucata… it’s close to a combination of my plans for Brier Patch and Pumpkin with Icehouse pyramids – likely a better play design, too)

Pizza and Nature documentary time with the in-laws tonight! Until Later, Dear Journal!

Help me. I have the “One Day At A Time” theme stuck in my head.

This is it! This. Is. It.

This is life, the one you get
So go and have a ball.

This is it! This. Is. It.

Straight ahead and rest assured
You can’t be sure at all.

So while you’re here enjoy the view
Keep on doing what you do
So hold on tight we’ll muddle through
One day at a time, One day at a time.

So up on your feet. Up on your feet
Somewhere there’s music playing.
Don’t you worry none
We’ll just take it like it comes.

One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.

and I were working on the same frequency this morning, regarding gags about prying the gun from Charlton Heston’s cold, dead, hand.

Body mightily resisted getting out of bed this morning, but I had to do it. Home now… only 4 more days until the next weekend!

Chris drove me to my stop this AM, but BHK picked me up. It’s hard to spend even 8 hours away from her, after I’ve been so spoiled by a 3-day weekend. We zipped to California Tortilla for dindin, and now we’re going to have a lovely night!

It’s getting warmer, and the trees are getting greener every day. Sure, I’ll be hot and sweaty sometime soon.. but then we’ll have fireflies.

Every season has something awesome.

DC pics from Friday for later ref – this area, mostly. Our walk was about 3-4 miles total, but the ground was hilly.. I wonder how much more that added?

9227 – Saturday

Yesterday, we went to DC to check out the cherry blossom festival – post rain they were at about 70% bloom, still lovely – it was overcast, made for mediocre photography, but I did get to visit the Jefferson monument, and the FDR memorial (which is probably my new favorite …. giant, tells the story well, and beautiful. I’d never been to it before – didn’t really know much about it.)

Best of the pictures to follow in a later post – but here’s a link to what was taken yesterday.

Slept in a bit this morning… vacation day!!

family sleepin' in

Our neighbor’s wife passed away the first of December, last year… BHK just found out about it midweek. We’ve invited him over for dinner next week (we initially were going to do it Wednesday, but he begged off), and are bringing him some tidbits here and there. I can’t imagine losing someone that close and having to go it alone.

Last night after work, BHK and I went to Red Robin to eat while we decided on which movie to see… we were torn between two critically paned stinkers – 10,000 BC and Superhero Movie. We consumed tasty items, while watching a girl in a robin suit greet the kiddies… businss was booming for a thursday night… and continued to the Borders where we meandered andshopped a bit. Picked up a new Zagat’s guid to DC and Baltimore, and a collapsable tote for BHK… fit sin a teensy keychain pouch. I teased her a little unmercifully about it, but she took it in stride. Visted the Kayak / Outdoor store and came close to getting another pair of crocs or two… army green shoes with day-glo orange straps, but sadly, they didn’t have my mammoth foot size in stock. BHK passed on keanes, too.

Eventually, we settled on superhero movie… bought the tickets, and changed our minds. So, we saw 10,000 BC. It didn’t stink too badly, and was entertaining in its way.

Guest Doodles supplied by BHK: (when she sees me messing with the palmtop, she always wants a turn.) Seems she always accuses me of gassiness, but this time it was true.

Some pictures to help me catch up –

Baltimore aquarium / Barnes and noble / walkabout after work Friday – taken with palmtop – low quality when embiggened, mostly.

After work on Friday, BHK picked me up, and had a great idea… to hit Baltimore and go to the aquarium.. it’s open late on Friday, and much less likely to be crowded as it is on the weekends. I was all for it, so off we went. After the Aquarium, we had supper at Blu Bamboo… a pretty decent little Asian fusion joint. They were getting ready to close, but we managed to sneak in for some Pad Thai, cucumber sushi, cream cheese wontons and more… I think we crossed every type of Asian food short of Mother Russia. After supper, we hit a converted power plant that’s now a Barnes and Noble – very cool design – smokestacks are still there, everything is very clean and metal-riveted or industrial brick looking. I like the escalator… the sides are transparent, so you can see the gears and belts working. Favorite fish – still the skates and rays.

We went to the aquarium last night! pictures and details later – what a nice idea of BHK though… open until 9pm friday night.

Things on the agenda:

Allergy Shots.
Alice’s Party.
Dinner out – Maybe Paper Moon or some Baltimore location.
Rest, relax, recharge.

Got Next Friday off – BHK and I are going to check out the cherry blossom festival or some other fun thing as a little spring fling. I’m almost more interested in people-watching than taking in the beautiful blooms. Hopefully, going on a weekday will reduce mob issues. (Friday’s cherry blossom events ) I wouldn’t mind paying the Jefferson Memorial a stopover, or riding a paddle boat in the tidal basin.

The Examiner reports that Metro’s oldest rail cars have become so worn, their aluminum floors are cracking under the carpeting. Metro says the cracks pose no immediate safety risk to riders, and that when cracks are spotted, cars are pulled from service and the aluminum is welded back together. The old cars aren’t due to be replaced for at least five years.

50 things you’ve done meme continues at 45 – I…

45.’ have been in few physical fights in my life, and most have only lasted a short span… as a result of those melees, I’ve discovered that it is better to fight tactically with a cool head, than when angry… of course, if you’ve got a cool head, who wants to fight? I’ve never had much choice, as I’m a poor runner – easier to take down an opponent than to run away at a speed where I’ll be taxed and overcome, anyhow. When overly emotional, I’m a more frightening combatant. Unless common sense overrides fear or rage, I will continue to attack an opponent (no matter what they’re condition is in) until I’m exhausted. It’s a wonder I never killed anyone including myself during puberty.

These days, and for a long time now, I’m quite passive. I can still get the short hairs on my neck up if life or loved ones are threatened, but for the most part, I try to channel my energy into more useful pursuits. My skill at fighting is poor… I could stand some updated martial arts training, even boxing would be good – my primary strengths are the ability to take a hit, grappling and hitting my opponent hard and heavy.

The last time I was in a real fistfight was more than a decade and a half ago…and that one was more of a “grab-punch-done” sort of scenario. I was working at the bookstore, helping a woman out in the kids books. A guy, probably in his late 30s, early 40s (I was maybe 23?) comes over, grabs my arm and says “you’ve helped her long enough, it’s my turn”. His physical contact caused me to tense up, and I told him if he didn’t let go of me, then I’d punch him in the nose. He responded with “yeah, right”… I counted to three, and then popped him one in the face. He landed square on his backside, and I told him in a phrase littered with profanity to get out. He did, but he also contacted the store manager. Despite my feeling that I was in the right, I was fired the same day. My next job was assembling furniture while I finished off my Bachelor’s Degree.

Since then, I’ve been in a few low-level conflicts, but nothing that would cause me to “go in swinging”, usually because the issue was defused befor eI had time to build up a full head of steam. I’ve been hit in the face with a pool cue… but it was an accident. That did stop us from kicking the guy off the grounds, but I didn’t press any charges.

Worst fight in my life was with a jerky in my freshman year of high school. I really had no experience in the HS arena, and the guy sucker-punched me in the gut and then kneed me in the privates. I pretty much keeled over immediately. He dropped out before I got a chance to plot any great revenge on him – I suppose it’s just as well, because I’d probably be doing time to this day if I’d done any of what went through my mind that week.

My favorite encounter involved the end of my senior year in the cafeteria during 2nd lunch. A fellow senior and I were doing the ape behaviors of open-palm pushing one another, building to a bigger fight. My brother, looking to protect me, took one of the aluminum food trays and slammed it loudly over my enemy’s head. It was loud, but didn’t do any real damage, save to break up the fight with laughter on both sides.

9195 – Saturday

Quite the journey today – We put the March in Ides of March!

We slept in, but got to the doc’s in time for my shots and BHK’s draw. After the requisite needle sticks, we launched ourselves toward the Eastern Shore once again – original intent of going to Baltimore for the Aquarium was sidelined for a day that maybe we can bring Adam along with us and I’ve got a non-cellphone camera.

Plan #2 was to go to St. Michael’s, now that season has started – check out the marine museum there, and have a spot of supper at the Crab Claw.

Those plans were stymied by a hand-stenciled sign marked “Flea Market Next Left”. With a quick mutual nodding of our heads, BHK and I changed course – we meandered through the building, fairly impressed. There was an oven cooking up hot dogs at the front door, along with plates of baked goods… mostly brownies and blueberry-muffin bars. Tools of all sorts, used books, some nifty antiques, too. BHK snapped up a phonebook-thick book of vegetarian recipes for $2, a keen jadeite set of salt and pepper shakers (not antique, but tres cool for $10, and I snagged a blueberry bar for a measly buck. (I almost got a blue-cobalt glass mr. peanut jar, but discretion worked for me. I really had no place to put it.) Fortunately the Salt-shaker guy took checks. (He said that he took credit cards too, but didn’t give ’em back.)

We left with our treasures, happy as a couple of proverbial clams, and continued toward St. Mike’s. Mid-journey, I realized that it was already nearly 3pm, and I remembered the museum closed at 4.. and we were pretty dang hungry – ready to eat now rather than later. – So, a second trip to general tanukis, then! Not as fantastic as the first time, sushi-wse, but still a fine place to land for lunch. Grilled Cheese was tasty, but the home made french fries would’ve been awesome if they weren’t quite so limp.

After a satisfying meal – we stretched our legs a bit. I got to visit the bunker, and picked up a couple of stickfassupervillain and spaceman. (marked at 20% off of $10 each) Armed with toys, I was ready for a little more shopping with BHK… we sniffed around a few boutiques, and at a place called La de da, she got a green hair band with and assortment of rhinestones in it – we though tit was $16, but rang up as $6 at the register… score! We continued through a yarn store with a cute yorkie working there as a greeter, a large pet shop, and then came upon crackerjacks toy store… that’s my kind of place. We got a few little wind-up critters – BHK got a tiki drummer (drums are a triceratops and tyrannosaur skulls), a pink hula-robot – and I got walking neon green monkey the plays the cymbals.

Happy in our purchases, we began our journey home… we were going to get together with the in-laws tonight to watch becoming Jane, but they weren’t in the mood – so we side-tracked into annapolis to see Be Kind, Rewind. It stopped playing there, so we caught In Bruges. I liked it more than BHK – she scored it slightly below average (a 4/10) while I skewed just the other side (6/10).

The corn is always the best part of movies at the bowtie theater… dialogue with the candy-counter gang was fun… you could see each stereotype pretty clearly. The blonde bubbly girl who likes chick flicks, the lumbering oaf guy that enjoyed hanging out with the girls, and the brounette chick who is the big fan of british stuff, black comedy, more pseudo-sullen than the others.

The pic below was at one of the boutiques… the first meeting place for Maryland Freemasons, now selling frou-frou chic stuff to tourists.

Archaeologists in Greece have discovered the 1800-year-old skull of a young woman who may have undergone primitive brain surgery. An alternate theory says she injured her skull when she suddenly realized she could have had a V-8. Whenever I see the word skull these days, I think Skrull.

9193 – Thursday.

50 things I’ve done meme continues with item 33. I…

33. I did not punch a doctor in the face yesterday, despite his smarmy, holier than thou attitude, poor consult practice, shit-eating grin and “you could beat me up just by sitting on me” comment. If I were a less in control sort of guy, I’d have ripped his spine out via his neck, reversed it, and shoved it back into him rectally.

Adrenaline-removed details below.

Dr. D really took quite a lot of wind from my sails yesterday regarding my back. I’m more than a little disappointed and dismayed, but I am happy that a fix is available, contrary to my prior concerns that I have no options.

The short form – I have gained back much of my former lost weight – I’m at 364 lbs. Pulse 82, BP 148 / 88 (far higher than my usual 120/80)

BMI is 42, according to my height vs weight, which is in the very [edit: morbidly] obese category – I obviously need to get back on the stick, health-wise. (some shortcomings of this reference)

His bedside manner was lacking in the extreme – said that I was in a lot of trouble, that my spine has some severe damage that needs to be repaired and the rub is I have too much mass to properly operate on me… he can’t get down past all of the tissue, (both fat and muscle) to take care of it.

I won’t go into his overly condescending talk about weight loss, but the bottom line is that he feels that he can’t work on me now… but he’d prefer that I come back to him in a year after I’ve lost about 100 lbs – then he thinks that he can repair the damage to my spine and fix the nerve short-circuit in my leg. Meanwhile, I’m going to have to suck it up, and just deal with the pain and numbness issues a bit longer… I don’t mind getting on a healthy diet and workout regimen.. it’s just a shame that his idea of finding a good one is “pick up a magazine” – rather than guiding me to a trainer and / or dietitian as I’d asked.

So, part of my journal is going to be recording and tracking my weight / workouts again – I’m going to resume my points-based WW program on the palmtop, and we’ll see if I can get myself into fighting trim at a reasonable and healthy rate.

I will continue to see that doctor until I find a better one – but meanwhile I’m just happy that there is a chance for repair in the future. I’m disappointed that I still haven’t gotten a cortisone shot, but there is a chance of one next visit to my general prac.

After much stress at the Doc’s, we swung by the local Games Workshop store (right across the street). It was odd to see a store devoted to just mini wargaming, specifically warhammer fantasy, warhamer 40k and lord of the rings miniatures. Apparently the Glen Burnie site is the USA headquarters for the Games Workshop with dozens tables of goodies set up for play. I was surprised to see the one in Annapolis hopping with people – mid-afternoon on a Wednesday… I’d figure everyone that would want to get in on it would be at work or school. I was impressed by the quality of the paint jobs on the armies… a lot of labor of love going on there. BHK and I both really dug the red and yellow lizard men.

We picked up a very late lunch at Lemongrass Too – it was excellent as usual. More tofu with peanut/curry vibe and spicy-sweet green beans.

We were going to check out Be Kind, Rewind – but it was too late. The only showings at the Bowtie were at 3:30 (missed it) and 9:30 (not on a school night!) – So, while we were in the plaza, BHK shoe shopped – she really liked the keen ones… Timberline, venturea, and malibu styles. note to self for future presents!

On our way out of Annapolis we did discovered the ATW man got gussied up for St. Patty’s Day (pictures to follow)… and he also has a myspace page ! Lots of pictures that I didn’t have of his past exploits – we went inside ATW and got a floor mat… the reciept mentions where to locate him on the web. I’ve added him as a friend, but he hasn’t reciprocated yet.

Dinner was boiled eggs, salad, and leftover veggie taco “meat”. good stuff, solid for the end of the day.

As for today – went to work, worked, got on the bus, headed home, wrote a long entry on the ol’ PDA.

BHK made some amazingly tasty split pea soup, with chick peas, carrots and cabbage. Lovely for St. Patty’s.

Point budget is 35, using the weight watchers points system. I still can’t abide weigh-ins and meetings, but the plan has worked for me in the past. Monitoring using the wwcalc program on the palm.

I’ll export the results here in the future.

I can bank a few points for the weekend, where I’m pretty sure I’ll go over when we dine out.

Misc health info –

10 minute brisk walk to the bus, light level. not worth any points, really.
10 cups water – just healthy.

Researched utility of using company gym during lunch – distinct possibility. 3 bikes, a treadmill and some free weights that might do the trick.
Bring gym clothes, allot 20 min for lunch, 20 for workout, 20 for changing/shower.

9189 – sun

Turned the clocks and we stayed in bed pretty late. We finally got up and at ’em at about noon.. er, 1pm.

I neglected to mention our trip to the B.I.G. book sale after shots yesterday… one giant blue ikea bag’s worth of books for $30. BHK got a ton of cookbooks, Edith Wharton, and some Ursula LeGuin – about 17 or so – I got a time-life book for Larry (with the “look and feel” of real hand-tooled leather!) on railroading, and picked myself up a few things, too (about 15 books) – Including Gene Wilder’s Autobiography, John Stewart’s Naked Pictures of Famous People (already read… it’s no Cruel Shoes. Additionally, I snagged a bunch of random stuff – Glass Key by Dashiell Hammett ,(fun to see the Baltimore side of classic pulp fiction) a ton of other pulps and misc sci fi/ fantasy. Biggest weakness of being such a book magpie is our lack of shelving (see left side of image in newtcam ). BHK will be grabbing some more shelves for us later this week, I think.

I think we made out AOK there! – Thanks to BHK for reminding me of probably the best part of yesterday!

Anyhow, as far as sunday goes – We rose late, grabbed a sammich or two for the road – BHK, the love cube and I all rolled comfortably to points south. First stop was Aarvarks.. sadly, my schedule was off, and none of my books had arrived yet. I hope my Jonah Hex Showcase is there next time! They still have a ton of treehouse and fluxx… and I realised we *still* are late about sending off eryx’s loot. at this rate, it’ll be easter before he gets a christmas treat!

Instead of normal fare, we got the new Tank Girl Compilation and Gloom Cookie – Tank girl is looking pretty good these days.. she’s weathered the movie well. I’ll probably pick one up to give to ol’ danny for next time.

Post Aardvark, we swung by McD’s for a shamrock shake. It’s a tradition! The taste was good, though the mint was subtle… the shake itself was a fine neon green.

From last year – still the same – I wonder if we’ll see my rainy-day chicken stalker this year? I sort of hope so.

Shamrock shake!

Nicely dosed on dairy, mint and dye – it was time to sally forth to the wal-mart. Obtained much-needed undershirts, and not so needed, but still cool dinosaur and robot easter eggs… pictures to follow. Surprisingly, BHK didn’t want the girly-girl eggs. Also snagged into the wild for larry.. the kids parents live nearby, interesting to see someone you know represented in movie form.

Closed the day with a trip to Mexico to visit with Tina M and Matt O… Tina was a little quiet, but we all chitty chatted about misc stuff – mostly food and travel.

Up and at ’em – Sat visit to the allergist, and then we drove on to Richie’s to meet the in-laws for some wandering.

Arranged to get my referral for the back doc on Wednesday – I have to call back monday morning to make sure it’s all in order.

Finished our puzzle.. I’d say 8 hours total form start to finish. we had 1000 pieces all right, but one of parts was missing, and one was doubled!

d’oh! ah well.. it was fun assembling it, anyhow.

0308081216.jpg

richie’s grill – bar side is open until 2am, now… midnight not late enough! When BHK and I arrived at 12:30, it was dead – no lunch crowd besides us. By the time the in-laws made it (about 1), a few more people had wandered in, but for a saturday, I’m sure the waitresses were hungry for tips.

9077 – Saturday

March Begins! David spent Friday night at his pal in DC’s place, but returned to us this morning… after my shots, we headed out to the Museum of Visionary art w/ BHK and David, and then to Edgar Allan Poe‘s burial site (and his 13 year old at wedding-time cousin-wife ) at Westminster (little known factoid, BHK was the tour guide to the Poe site, and has keys to the crypt there.)

Most of what was done and seen can be expressed in photos… sadly, you’re not supposed to take pics inside. ( I did sneak one with the camera phone , however.) clicking on items below will go to larger images. No ghosts captured at the graveyard, but I had fun doing some more stitching.

My favorite bit was probably the giant bird, nest and mirrored egg outside the museum. The egg glittered like an 8 foot tall disco ball in the setting sun.

To be honest, the interfaith art exhibit didn’t do a lot for me… I was more interested in the permanent items, including the kinetic sculptures art cars, and painted screens.

Guy in the green hoodie is David, BHK’s cousin – I think he had a nice time with us. BHK managed to dodge my best efforts at capturing her candidly.

9069 – Sunday –

BHK and I decided (after a little option juggling) to go on a little road trip to the Eastern Shore, visiting primarily Easton and St. Michael’s.

St. Michael’s is known as “the town that fooled the British” due to the clever action of early settlers. During the early morning hours of August 10th, 1813, British barges off the coast of St. Michael’s planned an attack on the town and a harbor fort. The people of St. Michael’s got word of the impending attack and hoisted lanterns high up onto the masts of their sailboats and into the tops of trees. The high lights caused the attacking British to overshoot the town. The rouse worked and only one house in St. Michael’s was hit by cannon fire. That house still stands as a private residence and is known as the “Cannonball House.” The cannon ball fell through the top of the roof and rolled down the stairs. The Cannonball House is located on Mulberry Street, adjacent to St. Mary’s Square.

I acquired a George Washington (it’s for the university, but just says George washington, with his face in a little cameo in the center) sweatshirt somehow – BHK got a giant one for her tiny mama, and it made it back to our house for laundry. It fits me, and I have since claimed it as my own.

I cannot tell a lie. I spilled some cherry pie on my George Washington sweatshirt. Irony? Or just me being a slob? Who says it can’t be both?!

We roamed the mostly silent roads and sidewalks of St. Michael’s… I’d say at least 2/3 of the shops were closed for the season, due to reopen in late march… but we did visit a few nifty spots that were open. A “Shabby Chic” sort of shop to get BHK a hair band and a tiny statue of liberty salt shaker, a wool store full of nifty yarn, a coffee shop that had mancala boards out (though we didn’t pause long enough for a game. Just as well – she’d have trounced me soundly, no doubt) – swept by the radio-research base to look at all of the spinny-antenna stuff, and get photographed by the man.

My big purchase of the day was an assortment of hot sauces. 44 cloves garlic sauce sounds especially yummy. More in depth reviews to follow as we try them.

Some shots from today, more to follow tomorrow, as flickr uploader figures out what I want.

We ended the day at general tanuki’s – the bubba roll (coconut shrimp w/ avocado & peanut drizzle) and asparagus tempura rolls were especially good. we may end up taking larry there next time we get a sushi jones.. they do burgers (and some yummy looking specials), too! BHK and I split a Natty Boh and some spring rolls… it was a great end to a lovely day of walking around, getting some fresh air and just being together.

After we got back home, we watched the Prestige. I liked it, save for the ending. The buildup and interaction was good, but the closing was a little screwy. – I didn’t like the Tesla device / tank element.

9079 – Sat

Nice morning, until I got out of bed, and pulled my back. At that point, I was in extreme pain and after much shrieking and frightening BHK, I took a shower to loosen up a little bit and went to urgent care. I’d say it took me about 45 minutes to work out how to walk from bed to the shower…the pain was pretty significant. Agony is a good word, that sounds about right.

Needless to say, I missed my allergy shots. I get to call on Monday to see what I can do about rescheduling.

After getting looked at, I was given a ‘scrip for an anti-inflammatory and a narcotic to knock me out for when I got home. The 800 mg of Ibuprofen given to me took quite a bit of the edge off, as did the change in position from sitting to standing. I was feeling good enough to grab a bite to eat and a haircut… Ledo’s calzone for me, and BHK nom nom’ed on some tortellini. We shared the spicy ravioli appetizer… probably the highlight of the meal.

Seen in the parking lot, after my trip to ouchie-land: if clicked and embiggened – License plate reads “Sons Confederate Veterans
1201071458.jpg
How do those folks rate a plate? I guess money talks. It is interesting to note that they don’t want any connection to the KKK around the Confederacy… The sad fact is that when I see a confederate southern cross “battle flag“, whatever else has happened, I assume the worst. Despite the wealth of history and culture… it just smacks of white supremacist behavior to me. I have to wonder if the owners of such plates get into or out of more scrapes with other people… Is a police officer more or less likely to give a ticket instead of a warning? If they drive through different parts of town, do folks cheer or give him the finger?

I wonder the same about pro-life or pro-choice bumper stickers and plates, too.

First Christmas Present arrived… From Kev, via Amazon (His isn’t due to arrive in Guantanamo until after his item is released on the 18th… not telling what it is here, in case he reads this. I haven’t peeked at the invoice, so my present is a surprise, too.

Rested at the in-laws – Chinese food and we watched Flyboys. Not a bad flick. It fed my desire to see biplanes vs triplanes in arial combat, so there you go. I was pleased to see a zeppelin, disappointed that they took a huge pile of liberties with history. (I didn’t mind that so many “Red Barons” were there… but it was pretty goofy from a historical context)
